WIP Wednesday
Here's a bit from the next installment of the Ascian Azem AU!
-
It has been two weeks, approximately, since they returned from exploring Coerthas and the revelations of that trip. Since, the Lord Speaker has sent the Scions an official request to know more of the magic that restored summer to one small corner of that ice-crusted land, which had required informing everyone else what happened…and then a long discussion on what to do about it. They had asked Azem for their opinion. Azem has yet to give it.
The Lord Speaker’s message had been…desperate. Couched in flowery, political language of necessity - a language Azem recognizes, despite how long it has been - but desperate all the same. You have saved us once, in the part you played in ending the Dragonsong War and aiding us as we stumbled down the thorny path to peace. Yet Ishgard’s troubles do not end there, not when the very land turns against us, our children freezing in the streets and our coffers dwindling as we struggle to bring in enough food to support ourselves. If you know anything - anything at all - related to this magic that might let us expand its effects, I offer a formal invitation to discuss the terms of what the Scions might receive in turn for such invaluable information.
They could offer their expertise, certainly, and maybe even it would be enough, despite this not being their actual area of study. But that would be intervening, and if Elidibus thought adjusting Coerthas was necessary to restore balance to the Source, he would already have set out on that path. But- something about those lands covered in unseasonable snow keeps sticking in their head, the cold so familiar after their long millennia of grief. Corrain and Alisaie had helped them melt the ice.
Azem blinks at the ceiling. Corrain had promised them as long as they needed to make a decision, and had promised that their involvement could be kept a secret (though his face had twisted and he’d grumbled something about Emmanelain when he said that, so perhaps not). That they had already given enough knowledge for the Scions and Ishgard to figure it out themselves, if there was anything they could do. They…don’t know how to answer, even so.
It had been a good trip, despite the people, despite everything. They had…liked talking about aetherology, and Alisaie had been kind, and Corrain…he still looks too much like Helios, sometimes. They had not wanted to see him so sad. He had cried into their shoulder for a long time, standing in the new patch of summer they’d made together, and they had held him, eventually, running fingers along the furred edges of his ears until he settled. Alisaie had smiled at them, and hadn’t tried to hug them, but had thanked them quietly later on their return to Dragonhead. Had said that Corrain has been struggling with this grief for years now, and she’s never seen him seem to cry through it like that before. Azem hadn’t known what to say; they’ve never worked through their grief either.
(They might have managed to, once. But then Hythlodaeus had gone, and the star had shattered around them, and that pain weighs as heavily on their shoulders as the souls of the lost do on Elidibus’s. There is nothing to work through to. Just- the cold, and the endless years of struggle, until they can finally save their people and do their duty.
And yet…Corrain has Helios’s eyes, but his smile is his own, and no less bright for it.)

lift me higher, let me look at the sun
Series: in the shadow of the sun || ascian azem au (Part 3)
Series Authors: @sunderedazem and @azems-familiar
Rating: Teen Fandom: Final Fantasy XIV Category: Gen Major Tags: No Archive Warnings Apply (Some) Minor Tags: Warrior of Light Is Not A Shard of Azem, Ascian Azem, Teenage Warrior of Light, Yol Preening, Alcohol, Nonbinary Azem, Warrior of Light is a Mess, Azem is even MORE of a Mess, Tempering, Miqo'te Warrior of Light
Summary:
Azem follows the Warrior of Light through Othard, and observes as Doma is liberated from Garlemald's choking grasp. Sometimes they get too close for comfort. Corrain de Fortemps tries his best to bear the weight of being the hero of two continents. Sometimes, he catches the Ascian paparazzi watching - and tries to see if, just this once- maybe they won't have to fight. Five times the Warrior of Light and Azem of the Unsundered see each other - and sometimes there's a big nuzzly yol involved.
Chapter Start:
CORRAIN He’s not quite sure when, precisely, that the back of his neck began to prickle with discomfort, the fine strands of translucent fur along his hairline stiffening to stand on end. But he knows for certain that it began in earnest shortly after they made landfall amongst the archipelago of islands in the Ruby Sea and went with Soroban to treat with the Confederacy - or, more precisely, to pay the bribe that would allow them to sail the ocean there unaccosted by pirates. Corrain rather thinks he would have been more amenable to the whole thing - and slightly less of a scowling thundercloud of a man - had that strange sensation not begun to set in. But as it was, well. He rather thought Tansui might have been glad to be rid of his glower, however briefly. After all, even petite as he is next to a Roegadyn like Gosetsu  there is something intimidating about a man who carries a blade as long as he is tall and imbued with fire-aspected crystal so the blade will burst aflame when aether is channeled through it besides. No less one who speaks only to snarl obscenities under his breath at the Garlean trespassers they’d briefly run into. Though perhaps that may have kindled kinship instead. He does think he caught an appreciative sigh from Tansui.

Final Fantasy XIV: The other Answer
Spoilers for everything from ARR up to endwalker.
So my brain was spitballing with a what if/AU idea I wanted to share and its real estate.
Bare bones premise: What if Hythlodaeus agreed to take up the seat of Emet-Selch Instead of Hades? During the final days Emet Selch begs and pleads with their best friend Azem to remain with the Convocation of Fourteen, Azem buckles and agrees reluctantly.
Surviving the attack of Hydaelyn, Emet-Selch, Azem, Lahabrea and Elidibus are left as the sole unsundered. Feeling angry and betrayed by their mentor Venat, Azem the traveler fully commits themselves to the Ascians cause.
It is now the Seventh Umbral Era as the ruthless Palamecian Empire sets their sights upon Eorzea. The reincarnated soul of Hades is, awoken to the power of the echo by Hydaelyn as the scions of the seventh Dawn seek them out but will the dour and complaintive warrior of light butt heads with their new allies?
So ideas.
-Hythlodaeus holds the sea of Emet-Selch, Azem the traveller is a member of the ascians and Hades is reincarnated as the warrior of light.
-The Palamecian Empire exists instead of Garlemald in this timeline and maybe like FF2 they have something like the Dreadnought, unknown if an ascian is behind the empire like in the main universe.
-Something like the Allagan Empire may have existed but it would have been a completely different power.
-Final days still played out the same way but maybe some changes due to the endwalker time travel mess in this universe.
-Instead of the 13th the first botched rejoining was the fire shard in this universe which is reduced to something like hell with the people corrupted by fire aether.
-The Traveller could be a Loki type figure within the Ascians ranks.
-Hades WOL like his canon counterpart has a similar personality minus the weight the prime one had to carry.
-Lahabrea is a bit more level headed in this universe having not abused body jumping as much.

I really need to write an Ascian!Ariadne scene where Ariadne has infiltrated some rebellion or resistance or another, gets "captured" during an infiltration mission, then gets "interrogated" by Emet.
The whole thing is, naturally, a ruse so she can get a message to him, and they have a nice chat about humanity while someone is breaking in to try to "rescue" her.

Saw a post making a joke about Tav looking like durge. But now my brain is on fire with “faerun but it’s a shard of the source” au.
And The Dark Urge is a shard of azem’s soul, looking exactly like caelum sans the catboy aspects. Maybe option to actually rejoin with the azem parts of the durge soul.
So much Chaos like “I’m not the dirge he’s just remnant of me”
And Calem being just as violent and bestial but for the good guys?? Some how???

A Tragedy. Revisited

Walls of carnage surround your weakness Crash down like oceans, wait for the light In total darkness, drowning in bleakness Awaiting death's grip, cry out for life Divided by destiny Torn between death and doom Destruction by decision Fate shows me my open tomb

Another change between normal Ivy & Ascian!Ivy is that she talks a loooot less. There are some exceptions, like if she's explaining something or if she's in a rage(Ascian!Ivy is the form of Ivy that never got over her anger in Stormblood after all), but even then she speaks very simply. She uses as few words as possible to finish her sentence.
It's because with those she actually does want to speak too, she doesn't have to actually verbalize those words. She shares soul bonds with them, which allows for wordless commutation. It also the signs of the Azem in her. Azem was soft spoken & didn't speak too much unless she liked you, but if she shared a soul bond with you, she almost didn't speak at all, because she preferred the wordless & private soul commutation.

Azem is a ghost, and the Warrior of Light, apparently, is a medium for all the skill with which he has in coaxing ghosts to speak. And worse, he is also an aspiring necromancer. Azem cannot help but be convinced to let him try to bring them back.

In which a WoL adopts a very lost Ascian. The Scions should have expected this.

Azem lets out a sigh. The clouds steadily darken and they can feel the aether coalescing behind them. The waters below grow choppy and wild, violent currents coalescing into a maelstrom no mortal could survive. They’d completed their task; Elidibus would be glad to hear the Sahagins reacted exactly as expected. So quick to reach for their gods and abandon the hands next to them. So blind to their own strength they only ever sought it in higher powers.
How the world had changed. But then again, so had they.
