I truly apologize for everyone who has been waiting in anticipation for either these new All The Young Dudes covers that I teased so many months ago. I’ve just kinda lost track of time with my increasingly booked schedule. Anyways I’m no longer taking requests as of now mostly because there is no way I’ll be able to catch up with all the previous requests left in my past post or in my Google form. I just wanted to make sure I finished these up because I really was unhappy with the first set of covers in this art style. I always felt like I rushed them just because my Sirius’ perspective covers had kinda blown up and so many people wanted them for Remus’ perspective I kind of just, put out whatever I could at the time.

So here they are:

so i haven't read the big three, they're too long (like i downloaded ATYD as a pdf to read offline and that shits is 1.5k PAGES, the first 4 books of hp are also 1.5k pages, let that sink in) i saw some CR fanart that i really loved (the cave scene),im like two chapters in, i can't do it, im sorry

edit: turns out the fanart i saw was not from CR it was from "only the brave" which is over 600k word which is wayyy over 1.5k pages (that's a whole +100k over ATYD), I'd assume 1.6k-2.0k pages

so like even bigger then the 4 first hp books I'd assume maybe 5 or 5 and a half, imagine holding a book that big

i saw yall printing n binding them but into separate books which is a smart move id admit, it's less overwhelming like that and it doesn't look like a war weapon and crime, and it's open-able

Hi there! I’ll admit this one had me stumped for a while, before I remembered about The Shoebox Project! It can be a bit difficult to find because it isn’t on ao3 but the pdfs are on the linked website. An absolute fandom classic, one of the earlier novel-length wolfstar fics I believe.

i designed these for the physical copies of atyd that im ordering, and since it took a lot of time and effort i figured id share them in case any of u guys want to use them too :) pls keep in mind that this is the first time ive ever tried designing book covers so theyre not perfect, but oh well!

to use them youll just have to save the images and convert them to PDF files, i had a lot of trouble formatting the spines to fit perfectly so ill link the interior text files i used so that u guys can use them too without any trouble :)))

Through my time on AO3 scouring for Harry Potter fics, I have constantly scrolled past this title as it rose through the hit list, eventually claiming the summit with as-of-now nearly 11 million hits. And each time, I have been put off by its length (1300 pages as a pdf) and even more so by the fact that I simply did not find Wolfstar a compelling enough ship to dedicate so many hours of my reading time to.

My accidental foray into Jegulus (which I shall write about in the future), however, stoked in me a love for the age of the Marauders and the beauty of the tragedy of their lives. So, I have now read this monster of a fic, and for the most part, it was fairly good.

Remus Lupin grows up in a Muggle orphanage after turning into a werewolf. Friendship, love, and mischief await him at Hogwarts.

Pros:

-Doesn't diverge too far from canon and fills in a lot of gaps quite convincingly. I think I finally got what made so many people go crazy over the Marauders. Some of those pranks were nothing short of epic!!! ("Lumpy Elephant Dung" - I'm still wheezing 😂)

-I have always found it hard to think of Peter Pettigrew as a true member of the Marauders. And after this fic, I can truly understand where he comes from as a character.

-James and Lily were so well written, I'm squealing. So was the rivalry with Snape.

-I am generally not a huge fan of OC characters, but Grant Chapman owns my heart, my mind, and everything else that matters. What a life! What a person!

-Nice touches of period-specific Muggle culture, from Remus' perspective (so many good song quotes). Would have enjoyed some made-up wizard cultural pieces to go with it as well.

Cons: (these are some pretty glaring ones btw)

-Horribly OOC Remus. And Sirius. I understand that this Remus is true to his background as an orphan in the Muggle world, but still... It's Remus Lupin! And his transition to DADA prof was a bit jarring, to say the least. At no point do we see him interested in studying dark creatures. Where were his years spent traveling? Don't even get me started on Sirius.

-For all the nice moments and build-up the two share, Sirius and Remus share, and I regret to say this, dead-fish romantic chemistry. They were better of as "bosom friends" or something along those lines. Had to satisfy my romance needs with James/Lily.

-The tone of the werewolf scenes was very Teen Wolf and ABO reminiscent. Points for creativity, I guess.

-The entire war portion of the story needed more work. As tragic as their lives actually were, I barely felt any sense of urgency during their missions and even less sorrow for their deaths.

-No offense to the author; I don't know what went through their mind when they chose to write an epic Marauders fic (practically a biography), and ended it right BEFORE Sirius' death, denying me my self-promised bucket of tears 😑

For all my complaints, I still have to acknowledge the impact of ATYD on the Marauders and HP fandom. Depictions of some of the main characters have gone on to become fanon, for better or for worse. Tbh, I've always wondered why there was such an emphasis on Marlene McKinnon, Mary MacDonald, and Dorcas Meadowes in most of the recent Marauders fics; glad to get an explanation at last.

Would I recommend this? Definitely for the first 5 years of Hogwarts, and definitely not after that. Do read the fourth part in the series, a 2-chapter epilogue from Grant's perspective for some degree of closure, if you're gonna finish it.

Or if you wanted a better telling of the Marauders and the First Wizarding War with greater feels and canon compliancy, might I redirect you to Choices? To me, that's canon.

yall do you think MsKingBean89 knows people are profiting off their work by selling binded physical (and pdf) versions of All The Young Dudes… like I checked out ATYD on ao3 rn and one of their author notes on chapter one is literally “don’t re-upload to wattpad” and if that’s how they feel about people uploading to wattpad then I wonder how they feel about people literally profiting off of THEIR WORK!!!!!

okay so this fic has consumed my brain and after reading it… it felt like my heart was ripped from my chest (which, as someone who is rarely emotionally affected by media, says a lot)

and as the literary nerd i am, after reading i was reeling from the themes, symbolism, and simply incredible quotes, that i needed to annotate this

so currently in the process of creating a pdf version that is in the format of a book so i can print a physical copy for myself like all those people did for AtYD

I finally finished my four-volume ATYD layout!

The body text is larger than any formatted version I have found before, which is why it's four volumes instead of three. (The images I added to this post are just thumbnail previews, not meant to illustrate the relative size of the text.) I designed covers, front matter, chapter accents, and gave each character their own handwriting style for their letters!

I put a huge amount of work into this (for myself!) and I'm excited to share with anyone who is interested. The fanart and fonts I used are all credited (fanart in the front matter, fonts in the back) in case anyone wants to look them up.

These PDFs were specifically designed for printing as perfect-bound paperbacks, which is why the margins are larger on the sides toward the spine. There are all sorts of print-on-demand book sites out there that you can use to order your own copies. If you're handy with InDesign I can send you the .indd files if you'd like to modify them.

If anyone is super interested in having these in EPUB format (for e-readers), I can also share those versions, but they won't have the custom fonts because EPUB formats don't play well with those.

These are hosted on my Google Drive and I have no immediate plans to delete them, but I do recommend downloading them if you think you'll want them in the future, in case I need to delete them down the road.

I binge-read ATYD in a few days - It was probably unhealthy how much I was reading it lol. I remember reading the post-hogwarts werewolf bits in church one time cos I just couldn't put it down, and I also read a few bits during school (usually on my phone under a table)

- on the physical copies, there was a link to a Dropbox download thing going around on pinterest where someone has made a PDF and formatted it as proper books (split up into 3 different, very long books that contain multiple years each) that can be downloaded.

Then, there's a publishing site called Lulu where you can get them to print you a book using a PDF, with your own preferences (hardback/paperback, page colour, etc) and your own cover / title - I think the first one was around £12 to get printed, and the 2nd + 3rd together were around £30 total (which is quite a good price, considering they are monstrously long)

I love physical copies of things, so I much preferred reading the physical books over on AO3, they were totally worth it

I agree with everything you've (so, so eloquently, might I add) said !!! Especially on the struggling to connect with Harry/Ron/Hermione. There's just something really gritty and personal about the portrayal of the teenagers in ATYD that is so, so much better than in the actual Harry Potter books (in my opinion)
