Mindfulness, Community, and Connection: Highlights from the 2nd Annual mindful UT Mindfulness Summit at UT Austin
On November 1, 2024, mindful UT hosted its 2nd Annual Mindfulness Summit at the University of Texas at Austin, offering an immersive, conference-style experience designed to help attendees unwind, reconnect with themselves and foster a deeper sense of community. mindful UT, a resource for mindfulness-related opportunities at UT, promotes student mental health through mindfulness-based classes, workshops and training.
For one of the event organizers James Butler, mindful UT Campus Coordinator, mindfulness is much more than a practice—it’s a way of life. Having embarked on his own mindfulness journey over 14 years ago, he credits the practice with helping him navigate mental health challenges and build resilience. "Mindfulness has been incredibly influential in my life," Butler said. "It’s not only helped me with my mental health, but also with connecting to others. It’s healing-centered, and that’s why I’m so passionate about sharing it with others."
The event, made possible through collaborations with the Longhorn Wellness Center, the Blanton Museum of Art, and Native American and Indigenous Studies, welcomed students, faculty and staff for a day of mindfulness activities. The event organizers, Butler, Angelique Karditzas from the Longhorn Wellness Center, and Siobhán McCusker from the Blanton Museum of Art, are passionate about providing many different ways for students to experience mindfulness.

This year’s summit also marked a new partnership with Dr. Polly Strong and the Program for Native American and Indigenous Studies. A key highlight was the participation of Elder Marika Alvarado, a traditional Lipan Apache healer, who led attendees in a mindfulness experience rooted in cultural heritage in the creation of dream catchers.
“Mindfulness can mean many things to many people,” Butler shared. “This summit is all about giving people the space to explore that, while fostering a sense of community.”
A Diverse Array of Mindfulness Practices
At the heart of the summit was a diverse range of mindfulness activities, catering to participants at every level of experience. Attendees could curate their own "mindful adventures," choosing from a variety of breakout sessions designed to engage the mind, body and spirit.
One of the most impactful activities was the dreamcatcher weaving session led by Elder Marika Alvarado. This session invited attendees to weave their intentions for the rest of the semester and the year ahead into their own dreamcatchers. The experience not only connected participants with their cultural roots but also encouraged collective mindfulness and the intentional crafting of future goals.

Another standout moment was the sound bath facilitated by Cynthia Aguillón Bernard, founder and CEO of ATX Yoga Girl, LLC. As a certified yoga and meditation teacher, retreat guide and sound alchemist, Aguillón Bernard used soothing sound waves to help attendees release stress and find inner peace. The sound bath, held in a serene space, provided a calming atmosphere for participants to ground themselves amid the busyness of the semester.

Movement was also a key theme of the day, with mindful movement and yoga sessions that engaged participants in both physical and mental practices. For those interested in creative expression, art-based mindfulness activities such as coloring and comic-making offered participants a way to tap into self-awareness while promoting relaxation.
Exploring mindfulness through art.
The mindful UT student-led meditation session at the Blanton Museum’s lookout was another peaceful moment of the summit. With stunning views of the surrounding landscape, participants engaged in a guided meditation to slow down, clear their minds and cultivate mindfulness through breath and presence.

“This event is really about giving people the chance to slow down during a stressful time in the semester,” Butler said. “We want to equip students with tools they can use long after the summit is over—tools for managing stress and enhancing their well-being.”
Takeaways and Final Thoughts
As the summit came to a close with a community picnic, attendees were encouraged to carry the mindfulness practices they’d learned into their daily lives. Whether through meditation, journaling or simply taking a few moments each day to focus on the present, the summit offered a variety of self-care tools that attendees could integrate into their routines.
For Butler, the summit is a reminder that mindfulness is accessible to everyone. “Mindfulness is about being intentional,” he explained. “It’s about showing up in the present moment and giving it your full attention. It doesn’t have to look the same for everyone—whether it’s meditation, art, yoga or nature, there’s a practice for everyone. So, come back next year, bring a friend and keep practicing.”
As the Mindfulness Summit continues to grow, it serves as a powerful reminder of mindfulness' ability to create positive change, build community and support mental well-being on campus. Whether you're new to mindfulness or an experienced practitioner, the annual Mindfulness Summit at UT Austin promises to be a transformative experience for all who attend.

Boost/Urgent: Trying to make rent!
Hi y’all! Recently a lot has changed in my home life and work life where I am not making enough to pay bills and sustain myself. Last week I had to urgently drop everything and use all of my funds to fix our car as without it we can’t get around and get to work/school. This has left me unbelievable short for rent and bills. I am currently in the process of applying to different jobs and waiting to hear back from places I’ve already applied too.
Meanwhile, I also run a small online shop www.brewbles.com that has basically been my only source of income in the past two years. Recently, sales have gone down due to instagrams algorithm where folks can’t even see our posts anymore and are no longer making enough to live day by day.
However, If I am able to make Atleast 15-20 more sales before the 31st I will be able to cover rent for April.
I unfortunately cannot ask my family for help as we are all in the same situation.
Please check out our shop! We have lots of inventory currently and we would really appreciate the help.
Our instagram is @brewbles
Please reblog/boost if you’re able!

it’s been a minute!
so last month i went to a real farmers market for the first time. look up mueller park farmers market atx. it was pretty epic.
they have this program set up so that if you receive food stamps you can take out say 10 dollars from your loan star card and they will match that! meaning you could receive $20 of organic (it has to be in order to be at the market), locally grown food for $10! (this doesn’t apply to ready to eat food though)
i bought spinach, turnips, eggplant, and a couple of varieties of mushrooms.
that same weekend i decided fuck it- babie garden. i really went all out too.
since then i have bought a tomato, bell pepper, lavender, cauliflower, spinach, aloe vera, dill, peppermint, rosemary and lemon balm.
i also began composting!! it’s not as difficult as it seems actually it just takes longer than i originally expected. Here’s the video I followed. If you don’t have a drill, buy an icepick from your local hardware store, I only paid $5 for mine :-). I have two bins right now so I wanna say that for one regular sized bin it was about $7 dollars and for a large one it was $9. then adding an icepick, and soil ($9 for two bags of different brands), my total came out to $30. of course this doesn’t include the food waste inside as well as paper and cardboard things. BIG TIP: when you throw in food or “greens” make sure you cover it in “browns” THOROUGHLY and then possibly cover that in some dirt possibly followed by more browns. my first couple of weeks i’d made the mistake of not having a good ratio (2:1, brown to green) and so i found myself with SO MANY GNATS when i’d open my bin to turn it. overall, it’s not very difficult. i keep a lil shoebin i got from dollar tree in my freezer to fill with food waste and when it’s full i spread it out in one of my bins. be careful with seeds though! a couple of weeks ago i was eating pomegranate seeds and spitting them back out into a little bowl for my food waste stuff i ended up throwing it in there and they started sprouting! i’m not mad about it personally-i’ll get to have my own pomegranates someday- but i’m sure that if you throw in more seeds that sprout quickly, you’ll accidentally have these pop up in your garden. anyway i’ll update as i start to learn new things and see results.
back to my garden, the plants (starters) were surprisingly cheap so i’m excited to be able to harvest my own food. this week i threw in said sprouted pomegranate seeds into a small tray that i’m reusing to start seeds in as well as some bell pepper seeds and catnip. i spray these with water rather than pour it from the can to gently dampen the soil. i hope the all grow soon :-)
a bit before all of this i decided to make my own apple cider vinegar. upon typing this out i’m realizing that today is actually the day i remove the apples from the jar! i’m really excited to have made this seeing that i use a lot of it in my hair and in my baths. again very easy!! (this recipe is from tiktok) just get a large jar (any will do) throw in your apple scraps (any time you eat an apple and leave the core, peelings, anything from it really) and 1 tbsp of sugar (i used brown) then fill the jar all the way up with warm water. leave it alone somewhere for three weeks and then remove the apple pieces. in a month it should be ready for use!
up until the last few months i never really saw how easy it can be to live more sustainably. like some stuff is actually so easy and cheap to do. try just searching on youtube, instagram, tiktok (this is my favorite for fast, to the point ideas/diys) tags like eco friendly, sustainable living, ecotok, zero waste or low waste, or really any variation of eco friendly phrases.
i hope anyone who sees this feels motivated to begin their journey. for me personally i’ve always been interested in helping out with the environment and so being able to do it on my own terms is really cool. i am so excited!
to close this epic of a post i will leave a quote from audrey hepburn,
“to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

DANNEEL ACKLES
ACTRESS AND OWNER OF FAMILY BUSINESS BEER COMPANY
Welcome to Talking Top 10, a recurring series in which we feature the founders, CEOs, creators, and leaders who are shaking up their industries. Ahead, read our Q&A with Danneel Ackles, and keep scrolling to shop her Top 10 must-haves.
Danneel Ackles is an American actress best know for her portrayal of Rachael Gatina on the CW’s One Tree Hill, as well as staring in various TV projects including NBC’s Friends with Benefits, Joey, and Jag. In 2018, Danneel, real-life wife of Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, began recurring on the series’ 13th season as “Sister Jo”, an Angel, and a faith healer. In addition to her television work she is also known for big screen roles in the Harold and Kumar Films, as well as films like The Back-Up Plan, The Roommate, and Fired Up.
In 2014, Danneel moved with her family to Austin, where they opened Family Business Beer Company. The craft brewery sits on 15 acres in Dripping Springs, with a second location to open in South Austin in 2020. Danneel is active in the community and enjoys working with local non-profits, Creative Action, Out Youth, and the Birthday Party Project to name a few. She also sits on the board of the global non-profit Random Acts, which aims to conquer the world one random act of kindness at a time.
For more on Danneel, be sure to check out and follow @DanneelAckles512 and @FamilyBusinessBeerCo on Instagram!
Danneel Ackles՚s Essentials
1. TELL US ABOUT FAMILY BUSINESS BEER CO. HOW DID THE IDEA COME ABOUT TO START A BREWERY?
While we were living in Southern California my husband, Jensen Ackles and my brother, Gino Graul, started home brewing in our backyard. I was certain they were going to cause some sort of explosion, but it turns out they were quite good at it. We moved to Austin and decided to open up our own place. We found the Dripping Springs property in 2014 and hooked up with now-head brewer, Nate Seale. Two years into operations and we have had zero explosions and one GABF medal, and I couldn’t be happier.
2. IF SOMEONE WERE TO VISIT AUSTIN FOR JUST ONE DAY, WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THEY GO? GIVE US YOUR IDEAL ATX ITINERARY.
Pry your eyes open at Radio Coffee and Beer, enjoy Veracruz Tacos and FBBC (you’re on vacation, right?!?). Then, perhaps a walking tour? (Yes, I do that in every city I visit.) Austin has a fascinating history filled with mystery and intrigue. Try Walking Tours of Austin. Finally, finish your night off listening to live music at The Gallery, above the Continental Club. If you’re lucky you might catch local favorite, Ephraim Owens.
3. WHAT’S YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?
6 a.m. I’m up. I change two diapers (twins), get everyone fed, dressed, and then I am off to bring my 1st grader to school. This all happens to the beat of loud music provided by Gaga, Eilish, Siwa, Taylor, and if I’m lucky, a little Nirvana.
4. WE’RE STILL FANGIRLING OVER THAT ONE TREE HILL REUNION AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES. ANY PLANS TO BE BACK ON THE SCREEN ANY TIME SOON?
I never pass up a chance to work with my OTH family. I love those people in a way that is only possible when you meet them in your mid-twenties and you all get a second chance to attend high school.
5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO WIND DOWN?
I like to put on a Duke Ellington record and pour a glass of Resign Pinot Noir.
6. IF YOU COULD ONLY USE THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? GIVE US YOUR HOLY GRAILS.
1. MAC Haute and Naughty Too Black Lash 2. EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF40-Tinted 3. Radha Lavender Oil—use it on acne, to reduce wrinkles, in the bath, in your hair, and in your cocktail!
7. FAVORITE ROLE YOU’VE EVER PLAYED IN A TV SHOW/MOVIE?
I guess I’d have to say Anael, “Sister Jo” on Supernatural. I like her. She’s a sassy gal, and she gets to boss all the boys around.
8. WHAT’S THE MOST TREASURED ITEM IN YOUR CLOSET?
I just got it from my BBF at St. Claude Social Club in my beloved New Orleans. It’s a blue brocade silk cape by Konana with a light pink lining, a hood, a vintage clasp, and a mermaid sequin appliqué sewn over the right breast... it’s HEAVEN y’all.
9. ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF?
Stop whatever it is your doing right now or you will never be able to run for office!
10. WHAT’S THE MOST EXCITING THING IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW?
I am working on a new project with a fellow Pisces that I hope, amongst other things, will serve to remind people to celebrate what makes them unique. I have also started writing again... stay tuned.
