“Intuitive, Irrational, Melancholic” — by Sophie Severs at Atwood Magazine
“There’s Still Time (Side A), is a testament to the fierce bonds Doris has cultivated throughout her lifetime. Procured by her daughter who, careful not to eclipse the overarching purpose of the project, has briefly taken a step back into anonymity away from her preexisting artist project and assumed the alias of Doris Club.
Having become well acquainted with the idea of her mother’s death at the young age of 10, Doris Club grew up preempting loss; twiddling her thumbs in terror and quickly wiping away the tears that had welled up in the corner of her eyes.
“I was sensitive to the passage of time from a young age. The gentle, candid nature with which my mother talked to me about death and impermanence made a zealous disciple of the moment, obsessive hoarder of memories out of me — this was the conclusion I came to while making this record. I’ve feared time as much as I’ve worshipped it. Side A looks back, and is an offering to the source of my sentimentalism.””

Harry Styles is switching things up, and while I was honestly not ready for it upon first listen, I’m now proud to say that I am fully on team “Lights Up.” The former One Directioner’s 2019 return is a wet dream of cinematic electro pop dripping with breathtaking falsetto and deep, heavy grooves. It’s a polished, sweaty pop jam burning with introspective warmth and an inspiring level of self-confidence, self-knowing, and self-acceptance. Styles sounds so at home as he builds from a stripped-down bridge up into a resoundingly passionate chorus:
All the lights couldn’t put out the dark Runnin’ through my heart Lights up and they know who you are Know who you are Do you know who you are?
Shine, step into the light Shine, so bright sometimes Shine, I’m not ever going back
Pop artists especially often seek to make big songs that speak to the important moments in our lives. In his first post-1D debut album, Styles avoided inserting himself into others’ lives and truly spoke from the heart. His music wasn’t a glitterball of energy (as his pop group was often known for), but rather a mature reflection bridging the electro-acoustic gap. In that space, Harry Styles shined brighter than he ever had before, stepping out of the pop music bubble and proving himself to be so much more than the images associated with his name alone.
Having already drawn back the curtain and garnered some well-earned respect in the process, Harry Styles is free to indulge and experiment in whatever floats his fancy. “Lights Up” is an indisputably sexy affair encouraging self-expression and self-love; it’s poppier than Styles’ debut and bigger than most of that album’s tracks, but it’s nevertheless personal and well-rounded, unassuming and genuine.
Harry Styles has lit up our lives like nobody else.

“This is far from your “typical” singer/songwriter content. Cujo Moon is a sonic architect: Akin to artists like Haux, Novo Amor, and Dustin Tebbutt, he elevates every moment with a delicate, painstaking finesse.” Whaaaat 🤩 haha thank you @atwoodmagazine and @mitchmosk for taking the time to review the new EP! (Link in bio) I’m so stoked I got to do this interview and totally humbled by the kind words. 😌🙏💛 (I use these emojis too much but whatever it’s how I feel! Haha) Cheers everybody. Much love to you all. 🍻🙃☀️ #atwoodmagazine #atwood #musicreview #musicreviews #newep #newmusic #folk #folkmusic #alternative #altfolk #alternativefolk #indie #sonic #atmosphere https://www.instagram.com/p/CNdDGxuBouJ/?igshid=wz379j49sp95

REVIEW: ADRIANNE LENKER’S STUNNING DOUBLE ALBUM ‘SONGS’ & ‘INSTRUMENTALS’
Adrianne Lenker has become the beloved indie frontwoman that everyone longs to be.
Her band, Big Thief, have released four albums since 2016’s Masterpiece, garnering widespread critical praise and a fanbase that seemed to grow overnight after their 2017 breakthrough Capacity. Big Thief’s music is full of raw, cathartic guitar and details as sharp and unforgiving as a fish hook. The band’s chemistry is clear across their catalog, and despite Lenker doing the majority of the writing, the contributions of the four band members are vital to the group’s sound as a whole. Lenker’s solo music displays the softer, more atmospheric side of her writing; it’s led by nothing but acoustic guitar and her soothing, wavery voice.
Lenker’s latest solo efforts, songs and its accompanying two-track but 37-minute long album instrumentals (out October 23 via 4AD), are folk music for 2020 songs is an album of in-betweens. It teeters on the edge of old-fashioned influence and modern sensibility; a technicolor photograph ripped at the edges. Lenker’s writing, though clear in its deference to its predecessors, has also led the charge in the indie folk and rock scene in recent years. The songs’ speaker seems caught between desire and revulsion, between vitality and exhaustion. Titles like “half return,” “forwards beckon rebound,” and “two reverse” emphasize these juxtapositions. The songs move between stream-of-consciousness and concise detail (mostly because nine of the eleven songs were penned at the recording session itself). The album’s midway mark, “half return,” recalls the snow globe swirl of memory on “Mary,” perhaps the most remarkable song on Big Thief’s Capacity

Very excited to reveal the first single, “Get Lost”, from @queenofjeans’ forthcoming album “If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid”—out August 23, 2019. The band again partnered with prominent producer @willyipmusic to further hone their tightly knit songwriting and emphasize their most alluring strengths. Pre-orders for physical and digital copies are up now (link in story, http://smarturl.it/tsr_202) and you can watch the music video over at @atwoodmagazine now (link in bio, http://atwoodmagazine.com/qjgl-queen-of-jeans-get-lost-premiere/). “If you’re not afraid, I’m not afraid” is a sonic invitation to the listener to embrace their own stories, no matter how scary it may seem. Singer @miriamdevora had this to say about the album coming together: “A little less than two weeks before we went into the studio to record, my mom passed away. The year and a half that I spent writing the songs for this album was probably the most difficult time of my life personally. Simultaneously, it was the first time as an adult I ever really felt afraid to be myself in my country. I found myself in fear not only of losing my mom to her illness, but of losing my space within society as a queer woman, and watching space get taken away from so many others. Much of this album is a reaction to all of these emotions stirred from these events as I tried to navigate my relationship with my partner, friends, and family without the guidance of my mom or a stable grip on what was and continues to happen in our country. My hope is that openly sharing my story and expressing myself through my vulnerabilities will help others that might feel lost right now, and that it might also help them find the strength in themselves to listen to and embrace their own stories, while also opening up and finding common ground with those around them.“ 💚💚 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzvn-4zHohS/?igshid=13sp79ur9f943

The world beyond our windows can feel unknown and alien – but is it? Are we really so different from the folks outside, or is it merely physical and cultural barriers that keep us apart? Breathtakingly intimate and full of meaning, Kim Anderson’s driving folk ballad “Emily” is a restless road trip of connection, identity, and purpose, urging us to look within and outside ourselves to better understand who we are and how we fit in the world.” -@atwoodmagazine.
