Guide to coping with paranoia/intense fears as a schizospec person

Disclaimer: This is made for people with similar experiences to me. I have recurring brief reactive psychosis (diagnosed I think) and in daily life am along the lines of schizotypal, though that label isn't fully accurate. This may not help if you have more chronic, daily psychosis, or more severe psychotic symptoms than me.

Paranoia of things "beyond this world" (probably biggest category since have lots and lots of experience with this):

Most widely applicable/recommended/healthy:

Humming/singing cheerful tunes or songs. Learned this from Totoro actually! And it really can help with keeping a bit of your brain in reality.

Decorating your space in color and fun and whimsy can make it seem more inviting of positive energy.

Having comfort objects and keeping things the same can help a lot. Alternately, changing things up a bit every once in a while can help with being less paranoid if something gets lost or moved a bit if someone else lives with you or visits you.

Playlist of upbeat, non-creepy songs for when the paranoia and distortions are bugging you a lot (currently using this strategy actually). Funny videos can help too!

Getting up and moving. Engaging with familiar people in person. Dancing, getting outside, etc., or doing whatever moving works for you in your situation!

Stimming.

Bringing pets/people with you when you go to struggle areas. I always bring my cats around the house with me when I am going to places that worsen paranoia and distortions.

Do DBT calming skills if that usually helps you.

Less recommended/works for specific people only/may worsen issues:

Basic witchcraft like protection and cleansing spells.

Keeping creepy-but-endearing things around. I personally find comfort in disturbing and creepy things, I feel like the bridge the gap between my reality and the real world. But I make sure I find them friendly and non-threatening.

Paranoia of others:

Stay in areas with people that you find non-threatening or don't have paranoid fears about. I always make sure I'm near larger groups of people, especially with kids. (May not work for others, may worsen fears)

Carry comfort objects with you.

For relationship-related paranoia (in healthy relationships), try doing something positive and non-threatening with the person/people you're in a relationship very regularly. Ideally every day, even multiple times a day. Regularly talk positively to the other person/people about them, and ask them to do the same for you.

If you find yourself yourself paranoia spiraling, take a break from interactions. Find a trusted person if you have one. Try to not make any impulsive decisions, and alert trusted people if possible.

The Planet is Totally Fine. It's Just Us Who Aren't.

Of course, the planet is fine. It's been through worse, right? Ice ages, meteor strikes, volcanic tantrums—Earth is basically a tough old rock with a knack for surviving whatever the universe throws at it. But let’s talk about the real problem: us.

You see, human-caused climate change is just a minor inconvenience for Earth. It's not like we're boiling the oceans, melting ice caps, or turning lush forests into deserts. Oh, wait—yes, we are. Funny how that works.

But don’t worry, the Earth will bounce back. Sure, it might take a few million years, but what's that compared to our short, fleeting existence? We, on the other hand, might not be so lucky. Our cozy, predictable climate—perfect for growing food, building cities, and basically thriving—is slowly being warped into something unrecognizable.

And who’s responsible for this lovely transformation? Oh, just our collective genius for burning fossil fuels, clear-cutting forests, and generally treating the atmosphere like our personal trash can. But hey, at least we’ve made some progress. Who needs polar bears, coral reefs, or, you know, breathable air? We’ve got air conditioning and desalination plants. Problem solved.

So let’s be clear: the Earth will survive our little experiment with carbon emissions. It’s just us, and maybe a few million other species, who might not. But that’s fine. If the dinosaurs didn’t complain about extinction, why should we?

It's my first time reading Abbey Grange but I have watched the Granada episode before. I have always loved the scene where Lady Brackenstall tells Holmes and Watson what happened the previous night, but I didn't know they changed the tone of the ACD text quite drastically! ACD shows her very angry of the way her husband treated her and wishing she could have had a divorce, while Granada has her much more understanding for her husband's addiction, saying she pitied him, and that he was proud and sensitive and withdrew when under the influence.

I always interpreted that scene in a certain way but now that I know they changed it, I can't stop thinking this was deliberately done to mirror Holmes's and Watson's relationship, and for Holmes to sheepishly lower his eyes, sharing a moment of understanding with Watson. (Here is the scene I'm talking about.)

In October 2023, a number of artists submitted tracks for a compilation project intended to serve as a time capsule, set to release exactly a year later. Last year I was diagnosed with Attenuated Psychosis Symdrome, but when I go looking for reading material to learn more about it, I mostly either get scientific articles (which I have trouble understanding) or debates on whether it's even real or not :(

If you have the time, would you be able to help find some reading material on the subject that has a bit of an easier reading level?

I found an article that states:

“The main features of attenuated psychosis syndrome parallel of the prodromal phase of schizophrenia. The person has very low-grade symptoms that can include as delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech, and the symptoms have been present for short period of time and worsened, but the symptoms are below the level of severity that would warrant a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder, such as schizophrenia.

As this is a condition for further study and not an actual diagnosis, there is no information regarding its prevalence, any co-occurring conditions, or other information that would normally be included with the description of a formal diagnostic category in the DSM-5. The condition is considered to be potentially useful in determining a potential risk that someone may develop a full-blown psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. Some individuals who meet the specifications for attenuated psychosis syndrome are eventually diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, and some are not.”

Reading on the National Library of Medicine states:

The proposed diagnostic criteria for Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome in DSM - 5:

At least one of the following of symptoms is present in attenuated form [having been reduced in force, effect, or value], and is of sufficient severity or frequency to warrant clinical attention:

Delusions

Hallucinations

Disorganized speech.

Symptom(s) must have been present at least once per week [over a month span]

Symptom(s) must have begun or worsened in the past year

Symptom(s) is sufficiently distressing and disabling to the individual to warrant clinical attention.

Symptom(s) is not better explained by another mental disorder, including: Depressive or bipolar disorder with psychotic features and is not attributable to physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition,

Criteria for any psychotic disorder have never been met.

It looks like its being less debated on being real and more so finetuned before being approved as a formal DSM5 diagnosis.

I don't know if this was made easier to read than the medical journals, so if you have more questions feel free to shoot them over.
