Better late than never...? 📚 Due to some personal reasons, I had quite a break from all my social media, but here I am again! School is finally finally almost done this semester, I've made my last exam today and I've only got like two more deadlines but those aren't particularly difficult 🤞💻 📚 My #abcreadingchallenge of January was quite easy, since this book has been on my list for quite a while! It is not the first in a series, but it's a debut novel from our own Paperfury! 📚 For February, I'll probably be reading Heartstopper 3, since I honestly don't own a lot of romance books😅 📚 #book #books #booklove #booklover #reader #bookstack #bookshelf #bookshelves #bookstagram #bookphotography #ya #youngadultbooks #yabooks #youngadult #ireadya #athousandperfectnotes #cgdrews #atpn #paperfury https://www.instagram.com/p/B8HtrlRg0Oh/?igshid=1lbnmk1l4zwwd

I don’t like playing favourites – there are too many authors I like, for a bunch of different reasons and whose work has been meaningful for me under various circumstances, none of whom can really be compared to each other. BUT there aren’t a lot of authors whose work I love and who are also among some of my favourite PEOPLE on a personal level. Which is why I decided to use Cait @paperfury‘s book today.
I’ve known Cait… I don’t even know how long. Probably about six years. Online only so far, since we live on opposite sides of the world, but I live in hope that one day we’ll actually meet. Neither of us can really remember how we started talking, either (a blog chain? A mutual friend?). But the details aren’t really important. We’re friends. We torment each other with our angsty writing. We have similar (though not identical) taste in books. We both keep the other up late because timezones are hard when you’re having a conversation. Etc etc.
Also, yes, I bought more fake flowers and got POSSIBLY a little bit too excited about them. I also bought these little butterfly embellishments specifically for taking photos of ATPN – when I saw them going cheap, I couldn’t resist, and I chose the packet that had the colour scheme most similar to the cover!
📚 Challenges 📚
#NovInBooks18: favourite author’s debut
(I’ve gone super flowery and colourful on my Instagram this week -- come and follow me if that’s your thing!)

oh Btw nico going back to that book rec posts- any ya recs for me? i figure i should start getting into it a bit more
you absolutely should!! I am getting into classics, it only makes sense. balance of the universe and whatnot
So! A few general things before I give some recs, since this is Baby's First Trek Into YA (this is not necessary. im just having fun):
not all YA is created equal <3 YA is literally just an age target (13-18) and can be any genre & level of quality
there's upper YA and lower YA. Upper is more like 15-18, lower is 13-15. No one really makes this distinction anymore, though. (I like lower YA tbh. it's fun, and more serious than MG, but usually doesn't have the romances that are so often integral in upper YA.)
do not read YA dystopians unless you've seen people talk about things that *aren't* the characters/romance
trust me
you will be sad
Anyway!! Time for the actual recs. (you may or may not have read some of these, idk. Hopefully not, lmao.) I tried to pick ones that I think you specifically would almost certainly like, but I have more!
Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo; we talked about this one, but it's worth mentioning again. It has heists!! Murder!! A cool magic system!! Probably my favourite YA epic fantasy.
Lost in the Never Woods, Aiden Thomas; this one is a peter pan retelling. Wendy's brothers went missing in the Never Woods years ago, and now, kids are going missing again. This one is slower, and talks a lot about trauma and mental health.
CG Drews' books. This is "a thousand perfect notes" and "the boy who steals houses". they're just... skdhfks. ATPN is a genderbent cinderella retelling about abuse and mental health, and TBWSH is an ownvoices story about autism and anxiety (and waffles).
The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins. 24 kids are thrown in an arena each year to fight to the death on live TV. Best dystopian I've ever read. A story about war and trauma.
These Violent Delights, Chloe Gong. A Romeo and Juliet retelling in 1920s Shanghai, about rival gang members that must team up when their gangs start being brutally murdered. I'm not done, but it's really good so far.
The Raven Boys, Maggie Stiefvater. The first book in my favourite series ever! Five teens search the hills of Virginia for a dead welsh king so they can awaken him and have a wish granted. Much, MUCH weirder than it sounds.
The Gilded Wolves, Roshani Chokshi. A group of mildly-criminal acquaintances must steal something for a mysterious order, and in exchange, the leader might finally get his inheritance. (It's historical fantasy, which I think you'd like.)
#these are mostly violent murder books w/a dash of ''heartfelt contemporary'' and ''weirdest fucking thing ever'' (trb <3)#(the 'heartfelt contemporaries' are CG drews' books btw. i reccomend them even if u don't like contemporary; they got me into it!!)#asks#classics nerd#fantasy book recs#ya book recs#book recs#young adult book recs#ya fantasy book recs#queer book recs#(most of these have queer characters except ATPN and THG)

Lake Baikal
All lakes bear the stamp of their own individuality, molded by their particular setting, the hue of their water, the mood of their climate and unique ecology. Many exude such a strong ‘spirit of place’ that they are even considered sacred. The blue waters of Lake Baikal in Siberia are no exception. This lake is by far the deepest, and largest lake - by volume - in the world. Plunging to depths of 5387 ft (1642 m), with another four-mile-thick layer of sediment further down and occupying a yawning, banana-shaped rift along a fault line in southern Siberia, it is estimated to contain more water than the Great Lakes of North America put together, and one-fifth of all the fresh water in the world.
The deep-blue water is so pure, especially in spring, that it is possible to see objects on the lake floor to a depth of nearly 130 ft (40 m). In winter a thick layer of ice – so thick that trucks can be driven over the lake – may be as clear as a sheet of glass, and fish can be seen swimming below it.
But the lake is a place of changing moods, often shrouded in dense fog or whipped into a fearsome frenzy by winds whipping off the Mongolian steppes. Because of the volume of water in the lake, ice forms and melts slowly, and is present from November to June.
More than three-quarters of wildlife in the lake is unique to it, perhaps explained by the lake’s extremely ancient origins, around 23 million years ago during the Miocene. Creatures include various kinds of freshwater sponge and numerous species of shrimp; the transparent, scaleless golomyanka fish that spends the days at 5250 ft (1600 m) and the nights at the surface; outsized and vividly coloured flatworms; and the silvery Baikal nerpa, the world’s only freshwater seal. No one is quite sure how the first nerpas got here: they are closely related to the ringed seal of the Arctic Ocean, but that is half a continent away. It is possible that they made their way upriver when the distances were shorter – during the last Ice Age over 12000 years ago.
The still beauty of lakes seem to touch the human soul more readily than just about any other kind of scenery. For Russians, Lake Baikal has a place in their hearts similar to that of the Grand Canyon for Americans. It is more than just a national monument: it is a place that symbolises the scale and grandeur of Russia itself.

How do you like your fictional musicians: tormented, monstrous, sarcastic, or otherworldly? ALL OF THE ABOVE, obviously. (But sarcastic probably wins for me. James Morgan from BALLAD is my fictional best friend.)
#QOTD: Who are your favourite fictional musicians?
***
New followers might not be aware, but I played classical violin for ten years, flute for eight, and piccolo for four. I got into folk when I read THE NEW POLICEMAN at the age of about 10, and the rest was history.
Following an overuse injury in 2013 that left me with chronic wrist problems, I now play mostly the tin whistle when I play anything at all (I've got a new set of Syn whistles that I absolutely love). So my relationship with music is a little complicated, because it's tied up with chronic pain and the fact that I can't play the way I used to. But I still enjoy reading about it!
***
Background music is Bach! Mostly violin concerti and sonatas. Also yes I covered my entire floor in music and then had to reunite all the violin parts with their piano accompaniments. I'm committed to the aesthetic.
