BAD BUDDY FILMING LOCATIONS 10

This post steps away from the original BBS to look at filming locations for the Bad Buddy episodes of Our Skyy 2 (overlapping with ATOTS as well), that aired in May/June 2023.

I think the fandom was so overjoyed at getting PatPran and the rest of the gang back in Our Skyy 2 that we were willing to overlook any inconsistencies (Pat's Baseball Mom hair included 😂), and this applies to the locations too. 🥰

Anyway, OS2 x BBS x ATOTS didn't use Rangsit University to represent South Technology U, and instead filmed the gang's academia-set scenes in King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL).

KMITL is about 30km east of central Bangkok in Nonthaburi province, not far from Suvarnabhumi Airport:

Once the action moved up to Pha Pun Dao, I did remember enough about ATOTS to know that OS2 x BBS x ATOTS re-used the same buildings up in the mountains. Most of these – unlike settings in other BLs – had been purpose-built for the show, and it was cool to see them still standing, looking good three years or so after they were first erected.

With a bit of searching, I can confirm that the Pha Pun Dao village buildings (Tian's house, the Pha Pun Dao school, etc.) are located at The Union of Hill Tribe Villages and Long Neck Karen in Nang Lae, Chiang Rai province. Due to the popularity of ATOTS, the set buildings can be visited as a tourist attraction in their own right, and are marked on Google Maps as such:

I have never been one to think that acting seems like a fun job, so I’ve never been one to think much about whether the actors in these series are having fun with their characters or what characters I would want to play. However, I think Choc Milk Shake is the first series where I’ve thought “oh that would be fun to act in.” The actors for Choco and Milk portray cat and dog turned human so well that I can’t help but imagine the actors were having a blast on set. My question is, do any other characters/roles come to mind that you think the actors probably had a ton of fun getting to portray? Or any that you personally think would be the most fun to portray if you were an actor?

BL Actors Having Fun With Their Parts 

Hilariously that was the first thing I thought in the first episode: the actors playing the cat and the dog must be having such a good time.

I think with some of the other roles that might spring to mind, it kind of depends on the personality of the actor and their costars and the rest of the cast. Also, we as viewers tend to make the mistake of assuming that comedies are more fun to act in than dramas or horrors. When in fact, it's often the opposite, comedy is most challenging on actors.

However, knowing that, and going in under the auspices of pure speculation...

It's obvious that the whole cast had a really good time filming I'm Tee, Me Too. I think that for all its seriousness, the GMMTV boys probably had a really great time on the set of Not Me, and probably the Eclipse as well. On the other hand, while it's one of my favorite Thai BLs, I think you can tell that it was a really tough and taxing location shoot for ATOTS.

In terms of actual parts? 

I think Seng seemed to have fun with Toh in SCOY. In Thailand in particular, especially if the pair is familiar and relaxed with each other, I think they probably just enjoy the working experience more. I'm thinking about pairs like MaxNat, who just give the impression of being fun and breezy on set. Or an actor like Perth (My Engineer) who everybody else just seems to enjoy being around. 

Also actors tend to enjoy something that adds to their range. So if they've typically been typecast in one role, like Khaotung was prior to The Eclipse, it's fun for them to get to play something completely different. I think we can usually see that when it happens. The actor is just sparkles more when he’s into the part. 

Sometimes when an actor is handed a taxing physical role, and is particularly into fitness, he ends up really enjoying it. Like parts that come with fight sequences, or martial arts. Quite a few of the boys in KinnPorshe had more than their fair share of fun in some of those fight scenes. Like it tapped into their little kid sense of playing cops & robbers. Even knowing fight scenes are incredibly hard work. 

I get the feeling the set of Trapped was a really good time for all. I think Chris and Jake both seem to be having fun with their roles, another cops & robbers thing. Similarly SCI.

Some of the Japanese super slapstick leads spring to mind. I think if you have the right personality to portray physical comedy, you can probably lean into it. I get the impression that Nakao Masaki is really enjoying playing Issei (Kabe Koji), because it's the polar opposite of every role he's ever been handed before.

It seems like Takara & Amagi was a difficult set, while Old Fashion Cupcake comes off as probably quite easy - working environment wise. That just means that in the second example, everyone on set is likely to have a bit more fun, including the actors.

It seems like both the leads in Word of Honor were having a blast most of the time. 

The Korean actors are much more difficult to read. I think it's easier to tell when things were more challenging on set than when the actor enjoyed the role. Color Rush, for example, comes off as an extremely formal, even stiff, working environment. Where as Semantic Error and 304 were (what amounts to the) Korean version of relaxed (which still isn't very). And Ji Sung is clearly having the time of his gd life with Devil Judge. 

All that said, these are actors. And with the best actors it's really hard (if not impossible) to tell how they feel about playing a role, because they are inhabiting it. This is one of the reasons I get annoyed if I can sense that the actor is uncomfortable with telegraphing gay chemistry. It means either that they're not a very good actor, or something about the set culture, director, and/or filming environment is making it difficult for them to fully inhabit their part.

Thanks for the thought provoking question. (Sorry I couldn't tackle the second part of your question, of all the careers I could have in the universe acting is very near the bottom of my list.)

So is it safe to assume the OS2 is closer to us than how we imagined? thos BandB as to start AND finish and we know nothing for that NLMG and MSP tho things are mooving and I am so exited to have my babies back(especially Tian and Phupa and Akk and Aye😭)

I'm so excited to see all these characters again and I also like that it's not just 1 episodes but 2-4 per couple which gives them a lot more room to tell & wrap up the stories. I still don't know how they're gonna air this since it's gonna be around 30 episodes lmao but we shall see. so excited either way 🥺

I will admit that my main interest in this line up is ATOTS. However, I am really interested how they’ll handle the logistics of filming an ATOTS special. I remember watching the BTS, and it was a very physically intensive process to get the cast and all the resources up to the filming location. I cannot imagine that they’d be willing to put in that much effort to return to the set for a single special episode. So, my bets are that we will find Phupha and Tian in the city.

Ooh! I would love to see the irl location posts for Vice Versa. One of the reasons I'm watching the show is their set/filming locations. They're so so beautiful. (And yes, I think there are so MANY of them, so take your time.) I'm still anticipating your ATOTS location posts, and I'm about to start rechecking your KP location posts to map them.

Hi, random question next year we are having a historical MileApo movie. If you could have them as main characters in another series/movie what type of genre would you like them to work with? Or what do you think would suit them the most?

Ohhhh this is such a good question!

I think one thing I’d really like to see is them in a setting outside Bangkok, which obv we’ll get in the historical movie but I’m thinking a modern film/show set in some rural or beachy location would be so cool. Similar location vibes to Manner of Death or ATOTS or even I Told Sunset About You.

As far as actual story/archetypes I lowkey think they could do anything lol they’re that talented. With a romance, maybe something like best friends to lovers or a star-crossed, opposite-sides-of-a-conflict kind of plot. OR my personal favorite: exes reunited after years who have to deal with some big crisis or mystery (small-town murder? someone they both know and love is in danger? 👀) and slowly realize they never really got over each other as they fall in love a second time. Give me some Persuasion vibes and I’m THERE

fair warning that cupid's last wish isn't the Best (not actively bad imo, just bland), but earthmix have a new show coming soon called moonlight chicken for your fix ! earth is playing a restaurant owner and mix is one of his customers who fall in love despite their different social statuses, cultural pressure, and the fact that mix already has a boyfriend who he doesn't love. it looks very community-focused like atots, the locations are absolutely gorgeous, and it's by the same director as atots !

they started filming a few weeks ago so it should be out maybe autumn or wintertime !

i've heard about moonlight chicken!!

part of me is really excited for it because not only earth and mix are in it, but also khao and first, and from the few BTS pictures i've seen on my dash the show really looks like is gonna be beautiful, however another part of me is like.... cheating storyline my most beloathed..............

like, don't get me wrong, im all for exploring characters falling out of love and dealing with a relationship that doesn't work anymore and ultimately ending it because that's what's best for them and in doing so rediscovering themselves and love and happiness.. but why.... does it always have to involve cheating............ maybe i just never recovered from i promised you the moon ;;;;;;;

however!!! im definitely not gonna judge the show before watching it, and p'aof positively surprised me with atots and how he dealt with tian having torfun's heart, so im gonna set aside my personal qualms about this particular type of storyline and try to enjoy the show with an open mind!!!

as for cupid's last wish, im not expecting much tbh, the main trope isn't my favorite and i've heard mix's character is kinda hard to like, which kinda breaks my heart because after seeing him playing tian i've become incredibly fond of him, but maybe i'll give it a chance while we wait for moonlight chicken!!

I know that someone (might have been a mutual) tagged me in this, but the tag didn’t work. Yet I saw my url and thought by myself, “I should remember this.” 😬 Yet a week has passed (of me postponing and not being sure whether I could fill out the whole thing), and now I have forgotten who the kind person was who selected me for this challenge. Whoever you are, kob khun ka. 💚 So, here we go:

1. Your all time favourite bl and why: This has to be A Tale of 1,000 Stars; I cannot explain exactly what it is that makes it so unforgettable for me. Perhaps it’s because it was my very first BL. But whatever it is, the entire atmosphere around it makes it my all time fave: the unconventional story, the characters, the underlying message, the location, the humour, the metaphors (hornbills my beloved 🥰). Whenever I feel gloomy I go back to AToTS, and I use the OST as my goodnight music. In short, this one has a special place in my heart.

(Cute main couple, lovely second couple, I could see the structure of the script was pretty well constructed. What rubbed me the wrong way was the way UWMA handled KornIn’s suicide. Suicide is already a very heavy subject, and the reason for it in UWMA is even more heartbreaking. On top of that the explicit manner in which the suicide scene was filmed. My criticism is not intended as a conservative stance against any “taboo” or “contentious” subject. (For heaven’s sake, ≈ 90% of my tv experience consists of lgbtqa+ content!) But I do think that as a show runner you should pay a lot of attention to how (segments of) your production may come across. Especially whenever you include events in your script that either show people affected by some kind of mental illness (and yes, I think feeling so despairing that you think taking your own life is the only option left for you qualifies) or the serious problems members from the lgbtqa+ community encounter (in this case parental homophobia so severe that it drives both sons to do the unthinkable). I think media should first and foremost be entertaining. Not the cause of many triggers and ripped open wounds. You may call me a nitpicker for this, but I think UWMA could have done better in this respect. Finally, what bothered me were the “flashback” scenes in which Dean and Pharm were confronted with vivid memories of a trauma that wasn’t even their own. Truly, I get the concept of Until We Meet Again. And I can certainly appreciate that idea. But I think the same effect could have been achieved with a less intense visualisation of something so psychologically taxing as suicide.

3. Is there any bl that made you feel very single: I am actually single 😂, but if I’m honest, I don’t mind it one bit. In fact, in this stage of my life, I like being on my own. So I can’t name a show here; for the simple reason that I don’t have any negative feelings about being single. 🤷‍♀️

4. If you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be? I would probably get rid of a couple of side-plots in Oxygen, so that Phu and Kao could get a proper development of their love story. I really liked their dynamics and I thought the idea of genuinely having to winning someone’s trust –rather than “just” winning someone’s heart– was a very original plot. Phu had serious issues with bonding with anyone, not just Kao, and the plot that we saw depicted revolved wholly around Phu trying to open up, and Kao attempting to win Phu’s trust. That was beautiful to see, but I would have loved to see them really get together at some point. Maybe this series just deserves a season 2 🤔, or they should have made PhuKao’s subplot less complicated. Anyhow, this was just a waste of potential.

5. That one bl you detest (don’t hold back): Obviously I could’ve gone for really problematic shows like TharnType. But that would be a choice of which I didn’t really expect a lot to begin with. So instead my answer would be this… Please, please promise you won’t all desert me for this. 🙀 Here we go: Make It Right. BAM, there you have it. And the reason…apart from the (ususal) cringe expressions and inappropriate sex jokes, it’s a pretty small segment of the entire show. But it’s the scene where Frame “overpowers” (sorry I don’t know how else to describe it than that) Book on the bed and tries to kiss him. Book clearly isn’t into it, and objects, but to no avail. A sort of intense house track starts playing and it’s clearly implied they take things to the next level. Curiously, “the day after,” everything seems to be quite okay. But the whole scene leading up to this is just very very problematic and borderline assault to me. What frustrates me the most about this, is that in the remainder of MIR Book and Frame are an adorable couple. It’s touching to see how patient Book is with Frame when the Frame gets depressed. But the aforementioned thing just ruins it all for me. As for the other couples, they were fine I guess but not very impressionable to me. I think the premise of this bl show was good, but the execution made it a disappointing experience for me.

WE ARE THE SAME... i really thought i was hyping it up way too much but after seeing the first episode and all the work put into it and the fact that p’aof waited THREE TO FOUR YEARS to find the location and build tian’s house and cast people and make sure he was ready for this project really gives me hope that this series is going to continue to be thoughtful and beautiful at every turn. the ost makes me want to throw myself out of a window, no joke... i’ve been listening to the mv on repeat ever since it came out. 

just quick baseline thoughts are that this show looks like it’s going to be incredibly thoughtful and that there’s going to be a lot to find in the subtext! i’m also loving the character based approach we’re getting because p’aof and the people he casts always do such a wonderful job portraying the characters, and i’m super happy about how they established tian as someone who seems restless with his life, especially after getting the transplant. his character is already so three-dimensional and i cannot wait for him to grow and develop and to find fulfilment in himself. also phupha! aaah i love characters like him - people who are closed off at first but slowly open up and become vulnerable to the people that matter most around them.

also. i am going to fully PERISH when we see the kids.
