Catius: In Memory of My Brother

Part of the Fin and Feathers AU/Living Waters AU: Catius watches the sunrise and remembers his squad leader and brother, Atlas. He couldn't seem to let his brother go. Lenora joins him and a conversation is had.

With the help of Erriox and his Salamander cousin, Kor’bak, they managed to salvage Atlas’ armor for Cedric to wear. Luckily Cedric was about the same size and build as Atlas so they didn’t need to do too many adjustments. It was good, in Catius’ opinion, to see his Ultramarine brother’s armor on his Black Templar brother-cousin; Cedric really needed it, being the only one of their group still without armor. Not that he wasn’t a formidable fighter, but he was still much more vulnerable without it, compared to the rest of them.

The one downside was that the armor was still bright Ultramarine blue (except for the patches) which looks a little strange on Cedric, but sanding and repainting the armor can come later. What was important was that Cedric was much better protected now and Catius’ mind can take a rest from worrying about his brother.

What would Atlas say seeing his Primaris cousin in his armor? He would probably have a good laugh and say Cedric would have been better suited as an Ultramarine anyway if he saw how not-shouty and not-arrogant Cedric was compared to his Black Templar Brethren. Also, Atlas would crook a sly grin and say something about blue and gold looking better than white and black.

He knows he shouldn’t feel so attached to his fallen brother, but they… went through so much together, his squad, his brothers, meant so much to him. Catius’ hearts still felt so sore; he couldn’t let Atlas go like that. His trainer would punish him for entertaining such thoughts if he saw him. But this was here in Ancient Terra, he was safe. He and his Primaris brothers were safe here with Lenora and Erriox. His adoptive parents won’t and hasn’t hurt them. They were safe to just be. Catius hoped that the rest of his lost Primaris brothers, wherever they happened to be in Ancient Terra, would find similar safety and kindness extended to them as well.

The Ultramarine Scoutling sat at the cave entrance, mulling in his thoughts and looked out at the sun peaking over the ocean waves. Atlas and Oleandros always did like to see sunrise on planets that they visited. While Timoteo and Sariel preferred sunset. Catius enjoyed both sunrise and sunset equally. A weight draped over his back. Catius blinked, looking to his right to see his adoptive mother settling down next to him at the cave opening.

“Watching the sunrise?” The osprey harpy asked, her wing loosely laid across his shoulder.

Catius flushed, feeling slightly sheepish at being caught spacing out and lost in his thoughts. He clenched his hand around the piece of Atlas’ armor that Erriox was kind enough to extract for him.

“Yes mother,” He leaned into her a little, enjoying the weight and warmth of her wing, “What do you like better? Sunrise or sunset?”

Lenora’s eyes crinkled and looked at her adopted son warmly, “Sunrise. As it means the darkness has ended and it is the start of a new day.”

“That’s good to know,” Catius said with a hum, “I like the warmth of the sun as it rises, as well as the soothing lull as it sets. Atlas… enjoyed the sunrise, for it meant we survived another day.”

“I would agree with that sentiment.” She said thoughtfully, “though you are right in that sunsets have a soothing lull to them.”

Lenora watched the blue chunk of armor that Catius played with, “What was Atlas like? Was he similar to Cedric?” She had noticed that Catius sometimes had this faraway, somewhat sad look whenever he saw Cedric in the repurposed armor. Sometimes she would catch him looking at the organs stored in the cooling unit where the medical ingredients were kept.

“Atlas had been picked to be the squad leader,” Catius said slowly at first as he remembered his brother that he lost twice, “He was a good listener, slow to anger, clever… made the worst puns imaginable. One of the stupidest ones is this one about a spice. It went something like ‘How can you spot a nosy pepper? It gets Jalapeño business!’. It was. So. Terrible, and then he’d look so pleased with himself with our groaning and bitching. The worse our reaction to his shitty, shitty word play, the happier he was.”

The osprey harpy guffawed, “Your brother sounds like Mara, short of the puns of course. But he seems quite entertaining!”

Catius groaned, “Atlas doesn’t, well… didn’t need any more encouragement. It’s only entertaining when you don’t have to live… with him…” his words drifted into a sad silence. The mer shook his head and looked at Lenora before snorting, “You would be such a bad influence if he discovers that you find him amusing; his attempts at puns would be even more insufferable. Erriox would’ve thrown him out of the nest within the first week.”

“You wouldn’t be wrong about that.” His harpy mother chuckled, knowing how her Iron Warrior mate could be. Erriox had his own sense of humor, but he was not exactly a fan of stupid puns to say the least.

“Another one of his terrible puns,” Catius said as he rubbed his face, wishing he could hear Atlas’s voice and see his grox-shite eating grin in person again, rather than just remembering it, “was ‘What did one eye say to the other? Just between you and me, something smells.’ He'd usually make that joke if one or more of our group or another complained about something smelling bad.”

He let out half a sobbing laugh at that, blinking his eyes forcefully as he pretended that it’s just sand in his eyes and not tears for a few moments. Atlas… Atlas had been the heart of his Primaris Ultramarine squad, as much as he had been the leader. He felt his mother’s claw gently squeeze his shoulder.

Catius looked down, “He was always the type to say ‘it’s better to laugh than to cry or get mad’ sort of person, I think… I don’t know how he kept his positive outlook on things… probably partly from sheer stubborn bloody-minded spite.”

“Can be from spite or maybe he is just a positive mer in general.” The harpy shrugged, “but you know your brother better than I.”

Lenora looked out as the orange glow slowly expanded over the waves, “Regardless, Atlas sounds very lovely, I would like to have met him.”

“That … could be more accurate,” Catius says, “I … wish you could meet him. He would’ve been thrilled to meet you… He’d probably make a pun about feathers within the first conversation he had with you.”

Lenora laughed.

What that joke would have been, Catius had a guess, but wasn’t sure as Atlas could be quite unpredictable at times. If only Atlas could see him now: the adopted son of a harpy with a host of harpies as his aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a firstborn loyalist Iron Warrior as his father figure, er… scout sergeant? Catius hasn’t figured out what to call him.

Atlas would have such a good laugh over it. Probably would have said something about how he’s trading scales for feathers… or something like that. And he would have found it absolutely delightful to have such a wonderful family… and more audience for his terrible puns. He definitely would have also poked at Erriox’s temper, with sparkling blue eyes that hid a sharp wit that would have assessed his temperament and ability to keep his temper.

Atlas was always good at finding the edges of their First Born trainers' tempers- so that he could dance along their nerves- to distract them from their fellow brothers and cousins who were struggling, or needed the distraction for another reason.

Or find ways to help them calm down, or find a way to stroke their egos in a way that wouldn’t backfire spectacularly. It was odd, it was almost like Atlas had an empathic ability. Or something similar. It worried Catius how much Atlas would shoulder punishments for others onto himself sometimes.

“I can withstand the hits- I’m bigger than most.” He’d grin and say, eyes filled with a burning light, “I won’t let them win and beat the Heart out of me. Take care that you don’t let yours turn into stone, Cati.”

It wasn’t fair that of their group, he always hit the physical milestones for growth, and muscle mass first. He is… was big for a Son of the 13th Primarch. Part of him wondered what Atlas’s mix was, to be so big. He’d been exposed to Nocturne’s fire- and his skin hadn’t gone volcanic ash, so that theory had gone up in smoke. Catius didn’t know if they will ever figure that mystery out.

Lenora quietly rubbed soothing circles on Catius’ nape, allowing him to dwell in the memories of his departed brother. Grief affects everyone differently. Her heart broke for her son to have to deal with the loss of his brother twice. First in his original time, now in this world. And from the way Catius described Atlas, it seemed like Catius very much looked up to him. Lenora hoped that her son would not have to go through this pain again, though she had the sinking feeling that he might, remembering Erriox resupplying the boys with containers to collect the organs, or rather, the geneseed of dead mer-Astartes.

Speaking of which, “Do you still have Atlas’ geneseed here?” She asked.

“Uh… um yes? Do you need them moved?” Catius became flustered for a moment.

The harpy shook her head, “No. I was just curious, that’s all.”

“I…” Catius bent his head, his voice small and tight, “I… I don’t know if… I’m not ready for him to go…” Atlas, forgive him, he’s not ready to let go.

Lenora got up and wrapped her wings around her son in a hug, gently scratching his scalp, “It’s alright, Catius. No one is asking for your brother’s remains. Atlas isn’t going anywhere. Let yourself grieve.”

The Ultramarine Scoutling wrapped his arms around his adoptive mother, his face buried against her feathery abdomen. His hand still held Atlas’ chunk of armor tightly. Catius closed his eyes, squeezing out the few tears he held back; the pleasant feeling of Lenora’s claws scratching his head, the comforting weight of her wings sheltering his body from the cool morning wind, and the warmth emanating from her body was making his mind slowly unravel into mush. It was nice, having time to grieve; back in M42, that wasn't something that a Scout could do.

“What are you going to do with the piece of Atlas’ armor?” Lenora questioned, her claw still stroking through Catius’ short, slightly curly blonde hair.

“I inscribed his name on it, though I’m not sure what else I want to do. Probably just keep it with me for now.” He could probably turn it into a necklace or even part of a purity seal?

On the other hand, he could also tuck it into one of the pockets on his belt. Or in the pocket close to his secondary heart underneath his armor. Catius thought that Atlas would have liked that, a little piece of him next to one of his hearts.

“Would you like to see what I’ve done with my loved ones’ remains?” Catius looked upwards at Lenora.

“I would, mother.” he replied, tilting his head a little. It sounded strange how casual she said it, but he couldn’t deny that he was curious to see what harpy rituals for their deceased are like.

Lenora led him to a small wooden box that sat among the shelf of organized materials and shinies above Erriox’s crafting table. The harpy looked at the box with a nostalgic smile, took it down and opened it, and gently pushed it over to the Ultramarine scoutling. Catius peered curiously at the contents: several talons, large and small, each twined with a few feathers and beads carved from seaglass and shells in an aesthetically pleasing bundle. There were also small bunches of feathers tied together in a similar fashion. His harpy mother patted his arm, gesturing to the box, “You can take them out if you’d like a closer look.”

“Oh… thank you.” Catius gently took out one of the talon bundles. It looked similar in size to his mother’s hallux.

Lenora sighed, “That is my mother’s hallux you have in your hand. This box contains the remains of my family and friends who have passed into the Great Sky. The talons are of those closest to me, like my parents, sister, and cousin, as well as one of my closest friends. The feathers are from friends or respected harpies that have died.”

“I’m sorry,” Catius blurted out, a little shocked at how many of his mother’s loved ones have passed.

“It’s alright. We harpies may live longer than humans, but things happen. Old age, disease, accidents, fighting injuries, being hunted; it is unfortunately part of our life.” Lenora replied, sounding so matter-of-fact. Catius’ tail swished uneasily. It made sense, but he didn’t like the thought of his harpy mother’s life being cut short so prematurely.

The young merAstartes vowed, thumping his chest lightly, “My brothers and I will protect you for as long as we are able.”

Lenora claws guided him down so she could nuzzle him affectionately, “I know you will.” she looked at him and smiled, “You boys are very sweet.”

Her son smiled back, straightening up once more.

He then caught sight of three large dark grey scales covered in dried blood. Those were from an Iron Warrior mer-Astartes, but Catius was sure the scales didn’t come from Erriox. He turned to his mother curiously, “Did you know of an Astartes who died as well?” he asked.

Lenora’s expression grew somber, “No.” she answered quietly, “Those scales belonged to one of Erriox’s brothers. I… wouldn’t suggest asking him about it though… it’s not a story he likes to tell.”

Catius nodded, understanding that the older firstborn Iron Warrior probably had experienced far more traumatizing events and lost many more of his brothers from the battles he fought than he had let on. Yet, he still had so much patience with him and his brothers’ traumas despite them being Primaris Marines and being so much younger than him. Not once had he called them immature or too soft, or called them abominable flesh creatures as other firstborns would have. He thought Atlas would have liked Erriox, though he would also have liked to push his buttons too.

The osprey harpy looked at the open box, “I keep pieces of my departed loved ones in this box as a way to show that they have a place in my heart and in my nest. If you wish, you can keep Atlas’ armor here for safekeeping too. You will always have access to this whenever you like.”

Catius thought it was a lovely sentiment to show that the loved ones passed have a place in their home and memories. He toyed with the blue chunk of ceramite inscribed with his brother’s name.

“There is no shame in keeping a piece of your brother close to your heart. Regardless of what you do, I’m sure Atlas is watching over you from the Great Sky above. And would be pleased that you remember him so fondly.” His mother said kindly, “He’d probably be proud that his armor is given to your brother, an apothecary-in-training at that.”

Catius nods at that; he knew Atlas would want Cedric to have the repurposed armor. Atlas always had such a caring nature, wanted to protect others. He'd crack a grin saying that it's good that he's so big- that he can protect his brothers and cousins better.

Catius gently returned the talon to the box and closed the lid. He put the box back on the shelf, feeling better about missing Atlas and keeping the only piece he has of him. He’ll be ready to bring Atlas’s geneseed to the base soon, but for now, he just needs a little more time with his brother at home.

🍓: Does your OC have any particular scents they like? Or hate?

One of his most significant moments is in Desna’s temple in Kenabres when he's transported to Elysium by Aranka’s song. The strawberries-and-jasmine scent of Elysium stays with him as a reminder of that wonderful place, his soul’s home. Baking cookies ranks right up there too 🦋

His choice of personal scent is something like sandalwood or patchouli with floral notes. He describes Woljif’s scent as fresh rain and woodsmoke and it drives him a little bit crazy.

Smells he hates: sulfur (looking at you, Meph). Also the absolute reek of a whole barn full of goats burning down (Baphomet).

🍻: What's your OC's favourite comfort ritual? How do they calm themselves down after a rough day?

🥃: If your OC was in this universe, what would be their favourite show/book/band/social media platform?

I really had to ponder these. Hardest thing is separating his taste from my own.

Favorite show.... He could really get invested in one of those reality shows where they drop people on a desert island and they have to survive and fall in love? But I don’t know what I’m talking about because I never watch that kind of thing, I guess you can tell. He would LOVE ATLA.

As for book(s) – I would lend him all my Discworld books and the Master and Commander series (no hope of getting them back I guess) and I hope he’d like them. But I think so. He’d enjoy the adventure, humor and the great characters and relationships.

On social media he would love to connect with people (and show off) on Insta but the overall vibe would put him off. Never give this man TikTok – just keep him away from it. He might have a YouTube channel with wholesome guitar lessons, like the Bob Ross of guitar.

Favorite musician/band... also incredibly difficult because he has eclectic taste and so do I but do our tastes overlap...? Hozier would be his idol. I think he’d love oldies by the great talents like Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, David Bowie, David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Earth Wind & Fire, Tim Buckley, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Kate Bush, Pearl Jam. Stuff with heart and soul.

Lasko's listener: I just established the other day that they own an axolotl named Cella (that Freelancer is hellbent on calling "Celery" and Huxley loves her ((the axolotl))sm) and this is canon to me now. They also have a Chinese water dragon named Lotus bc I said so :)

Freelancer: do rats count as an exotic pet?? (Google says they do-) They named her Gribby. This is also canon to me.

Angel: they 100% have a sugar glider named Goblin (and David is terrified of him.) They want a fennec fox and they will get a fennec fox and they will name her Deedee. Short for Speed Demon.

Baabe: snake. They own a snake and they named her Rory and Asher loves her to death.

Sweetheart: chameleon. His name is Karma and he and Aggro are besties to the max.

Darlin': a fucking raccoon. Or a badger. Either one named Cujo.

Lovely: they own a bat named Valentina.

Bright Eyes: also owns a rat, but they didn't him Remi. They couldn't remember the rat's actual name so instead they ended up naming him fuckin Ratatouille💀

Starlight: albino ferret albino ferret albino ferret and she's named Carina :)

Seer Obscura: literally owns a barn owl named Tiresias.

Cutie: they have a couple mice they named Allen and Atlas.

Honey: iguana named Geechee, but he also responds to the name Bee for some odd, unknown reason (*cough* Guy-)

Warden: snake. Burmese python. I feel like they would want to name her, but wouldnt know what to name her, so they'd settle for Mesii (to base it slightly off "burmese")

Mentor/Baby: four ferrets. Four ferrets that are specifically named Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde.

Smartass: they have a bearded dragon named Ivy and she vibes with Aaron.

Sunshine: they have chinchilla siblings named Nimbus and Nebula :3

Anton's listener: they have 2 tree frogs named Mika and Aivo, and a chinchilla named Seria (I like my chinchillas, okay?? I've always wanted one-)

James' listener: hedgehog named Morose and he's the cutest little baby James has ever laid his eyes on.

Asset: they found a mouse in the vents one time and they've kept it ever since. They named her Thias. They like to show Thias to Anton. Anton likes to see Thias(Thias reminds him of Seria). They have also introduced Thias to Brian. Brian also likes Thias. Most of the people working with/on Asset know Thias.

Precious: they aren't allowed to own a pet. Because owning a pet means giving their love and affection and attention to someone other than Regulus.

But his research seemed to make him more confused and concerned about what was going on, aliens from outer space? Human experiments? And before he could even get further research his dad seemed to have one of the aliens...inside him? Its name was Venom and it would change both father and son's life forever.

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

From her OG character tag on my old blog teehee: : I was playing RDR2 when I heard this dialogue come up in camp, and I got so offended by the resignation in Arthur’s voice that I went “there needs to be someone standing off to the side getting royally pissed on his behalf FOR him.” And I kept listening to Dutch and went “okay but what if that same someone had thoughts that were pretty much in line with that, too?” And finally, what if Dutch asked them how they thought they’d act when the time comes, and they answered, “I can’t die, but when I do, I’m coming back bigger and worse.”

As for CoD, my bestie, Wards, put me onto the Sawney Bean cannibalism case, and it really dovetailed beautifully into a CoD dream I had that I wanted (and still want to) develop into a full plot. But without going into the plot other than cannibals in the sticks, I had this image of Soap meeting Bordelon, who is the FBI agent assigned to the case, at a five bar the night before the initial brief, and they don't really acquaint themselves, just have a fun night. The next morning, who blasts into the Sheriff 's office parking lot in a white Corvette Stingray, blasting the speakers, than the crazy lady he met last night?

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?

Ohhhh. So the thing about Bordelon is she is cold, not unlike Rivka, but she's not indifferent to it, she fully embraces and glories in it. She has the capacity to be an awful, cutthroat person, and she knows she's more often than not unpalatable, frightening, and ruthless, but she gets the fuckin job done. Basically this quote from Djuna Barnes:

HEEHEE. So her full name is Perdita 'Wildwood' Bordelon. Wildwood came from the Walk the Line cover of Wildwood Flower, I just love the song. Perdita I chose bc her canon family had VEEERY Greek/Latin names as a tradition (her horrible eldest brother was named Atlas), but hers basically means lost or eternal damnation, at least for perdition which for some reason I have sewn into my head as a very southern concept lol. Bordelon I got from a Cajun last name list lol.

Background:

Atlas was born with the weight of his families legacy on his shoulder. The oldest of the two Briarwood siblings, Atlas would take over both their father's large horse breeding operation and the Briarwood family mob, an irish mob well established for generations both in ireland and America. as soon as he could walk, his father had him in the saddle, learning how to ride and care for horses, training him and them for competitions in both show jumping and dressage. their family had a specific bond with horses that seemed unnatural, a skill that dated back generations, yet the siblings seemed to embody it more than anyone.

In between training horses and training himself for the ring, he spent time with his father in his work, learning what he could about both sides of the business. when they were old enough, the siblings came to the agreement with their father that Atlas would head the family for the mob business directly, and Ari would handle the more discreet side wove into their competitions and the horse breeding / training. a double edged sword that would gaurantee a better functioning machine while both siblings still competed in competitions as they saw fit.

when Atlas was 15, he caught one of the trainers making his sister uncomfortable and making unwanted advances. he launched himself at the man but despite having surprise on his side, he was quickly subdued and held to the floor. the trainer struck a deal with him, that he'd focus his attention of Atlas, rather than Ari, and leave her alone completely. or he'd kill Atlas here, blame it on accident and then do as he wanted with his sister. Atlas agreed, and little did he know that a deal of the same kind was made towards his sister. neither spoke of it until much later.

Atlas found himself spending more time alone with one of their family's prized studs, and his competition horse, in the late hours of the night. it was there that a few men broke into the barn and tried to kill him, and the horse. the trainer it seemed, sold them out to the Vitorri family, who sent their own kill squad after the heir. the men beat him, taking a riding crop to his face, back, arms, and hands while another tried to inject something into the stallions neck, however both boy and horse fought enough to create a disturbance at the barn, and the dogs to start howling alerting those that something was wrong. during the small moment of hesitation, Atlas managed to grab a lead rope and strangle one of his attackers as the others fled. his father soon found him covered in blood and sent men after those that ran. unfortunately, they had succeeded in part of their mission, as the stallion did not make it through the night, Atlas feeling a pain sharp in his chest as it breathed its final breath.

it was played off as a riding accident, that the marks now on his body were from a fall into barbed wire, though the only things that scarred was a whip crack on his lower lip, and above his right eye. during his recovery time, he spent more time with his father and in fact headed some business deals on his own, growing more into the role he'd been raised for.

Atlas is older now, wiser, and has come into his own in both competition wise, and his place in the criminal underworld.

Atlas is aged 22-27, bisexual.
