Do you know why this building is important? I’ll wait.....*plays jeopardy music*. Ebenezer Baptist Church was the church that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr co-pastored prior to his assasination. Unfortunately, the church was closed during my visit but I hope to get a chance to go inside and feel the history of a place that Dr. King once walked in. These views of the Atlanta Municipal Airport were taken in 1969 and are from our Grady Ridgeway papers (MS3925). Grady Ridgeway worked as the Airport Manager of the Atlanta Municipal Airport under Mayor William Hartsfield overseeing the airport's expansion and modernization. Later Ridgeway was chosen as the Commissioner of Aviation for the city of Atlanta. The Atlanta Municipal Airport was named Candler Field until 1946.  It was later renamed Hartsfield Airport after Mayor Hartsfield, who had promoted Atlanta as a hub for air travel.  It was renamed Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in 2003 to honor Mayor Maynard Jackson, who had led a major expansion of the airport in the 1970s. Hartsfield-Jackson Airport is familiar to travelers across the globe as it is annually ranked as the world’s busiest airport.
