Masterarbeit 1

So, ich hab abgegeben, nun zu meiner Masterarbeit: In meiner Masterarbeit geht es darum, die Eisschilde und Gletscher um das Copper River Basin (Kupfer-Fluss-Einzugsgebiet) in Südostalaska zu modellieren, und zwar von 21'000 Jahren vor unserer Zeit bis heute. Das Copper River Basin ist ein Gebiet etwa doppelt so gross wie die Schweiz, welches auf allen Seiten von Gebirgen eingeschlossen ist. Vor 21'000 Jahren war das letzte glaziale Maximum, das LGM. Seitdem sind die Gletscher nicht mehr stark gewachsen, und viele Moränen, die man heute noch in der Landschaft erkennen kann, sind von dann. Die Gletscher damals waren so gross, dass sie den Copper River, der heute nach Süden fliesst, aufstauten, so dass er zeitweise nach Westen oder nach Norden geflossen ist. Ausserdem haben sie einen See aufgestaut, Lake Atna, der nach dem nachwievor dort lebenden Ureinwohnerstamm 'Athna' benannt ist.

Kennikott

Sonntags sah ich mir erst mal Kennikott etwas mehr an, las über die Minen, die Eisenbahn, die extra für das Erz bis nach Cordova gebaut wurde, über die Ingenieursleistung. Sie haben da schon tolle neue Techniken entwickelt, um alles Kupfer aus dem Erz zu bekommen. Allerdings wurde auch 363 Tage im Jahr gearbeitet, die Firma hat riesen Profite gemacht, und die Arbeiter schlecht behandelt. Als die Arbeiter streikten, wurden sie alle entlassen - es gab genug Leute, die dringend einen Job brauchten, um die Arbeiter zu ersetzen. Leute, die bei der Arbeit starben, wurden auf einem kleinen Friedhof begraben, wenn die Familie es sich nicht leisten konnte, sie nach Hause schicken zu lassen. Auch über das Schicksal der Athna wird niemehr geschrieben, wie es ihnen ging, nachdem ihre Kupferquelle von weissen "Entdeckern" ausgebeutet wurde.
