We need the obnoxious atheists back. I know they engineered their own destruction by being annoying and pretentious, but it has become apparent how essential to the ecosystem they were. The religious fanatics have become too bold without their natural predators. Jesus wojaks would have been torn to shreds in 2011.

I've always loved that there isn't religion in Panem. There are still traditions, seasonal celebration, and superstition, but there isn't Religion.
In the Trilogy, they have a Harvest Festival, celebrated nationwide in alignment with the harvest season in District 11 (and District 9, but they're so neglected) and the marriage ceremonies of Districts 4 and 12. None of that is inherently religious or even spiritual. It's just culture and atheist/aspiritual ceremony.
The Ballad was the first time we got a sense of people conceptualizing an afterlife or anything close to religion. The breadcrumb funeral tradition of District 2 relates to having food for the journey to the afterlife, but we don't get any detail on what sort of afterlife that is, and no greater religious or spiritual belief system is discussed. There are references to "heaven" and a "thereafter" afterlife in the songs. However, the reference to heaven in the old ballad of Lucy Gray is meant to be old-fashioned, a relic of a previous time. And the "thereafter" is even more vague than District 2's breadcrumb afterlife.
can we talk about the almost complete lack of religion in the hunger games? i find it SO incredibly interesting, and i never thought much of it. i always thought it made sense that religion would die with our world. but then in tbosas, we have the breadcrumbs. the ritual from district 2. and it makes me wonder, whether that spun from something from the old world. or whether mankind created something entirely new, and whether there was more to it that mrs. plinth chose not to tell coriolanus.

Being an atheist in the ancient world must have been so funny because it's not like you have solid alternative explanations yet for why the sun rises or sea storms or why there are phases of the moon. You're just kind of like, "fuck those guys." Professional haters since before they made copper. And I think that's pretty great.

“You dont want kids? I said the same thing at your age. You’ll realize later.”
“You’re trans? You’re too young to know that. You’ll grow out of it.”
“You’re an atheist? You don’t actually disbelieve, you’re just mad at god. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess.”
“You’re a leftist? You’ll become more conservative eventually; every generation does when they come into contact with The Real World™️”
“You’re gay/ace/queer? You just havent met the right man/woman yet.”
If you say any of the above things give me your personal information so i can harm you
edit: the terfs found this post. Y’all fuckin KNOW a teenager saying “give me your personal information” is a joke. You’re literally just being vindictive to have something to say.
anywaysy crazy how u guys r aligning with people who like theocracy and homophobia and heteronormity just because you hate trans people. It’s almost like you, my fellow hoes, are really damn predictable.
Edit 2: i love how after that first edit terfs mysteriously stopped interacting

It's interesting to me that growing up Jewish seems to have given me a fundamentally different understanding of religion from my Christian friends. For me, I think that your religion (or ethnicity, since Judaism is an ethnicity) is not something you can get rid of. You can convert to another religion, but I never understood friends of mine who said that they weren't Christian, but Atheist.
"But you celebrate Christmas, right?" I asked them.
"Well, yeah," they said, "but we don't celebrate Christian Christmas. I'm atheist."
That didn't make any sense to me. Sure, maybe the version of Christmas they celebrated in their house looked more like treats and presents and less like nativity scenes and prayers, but it was still the same holiday.
So, I came up with the concept of the difference between "Not Christian" and "non-Christian". Which of course my "not christian" friends didn't understand. But my idea was that there are people who are "not christian" - mainly culturally christian atheists - and people who are "non-christian", like Jews, Hindus, Muslims, or others.
Because while both groups generally don't identify as Christian, we have different experiences. As a Jew, my experience as a religious minority is not the same as that of a culturally Christian atheist. They're not Christian, and I'm not Christian, but in different ways.

it's like every few months tumblr reinvents "atheists are all immoral and evil and secretly genocidal gamergate guys and also all white" like some kind of horrible cycle. and every time without failing people come to the conclusion "this is why i don't trust people who aren't at least a little bit religious". like wait till you meet a real communist and not just your vaguely"leftist" D&D buddies, you're gonna throw up and cry when you learn what materialism is.

"Indigenous peoples often have immense scientific knowledge that has been ignored for centuries because it uses a different framework from Western science, and we should stop rejecting that science and learn to work with different ways of looking at nature" - extremely true, extremely cool, I want to know more
"Respecting indigenous science means you have to literally believe in indigenous religion - no it doesn't matter which one, all indigenous religion is just feel-good animism about how nature loves us - and if you ever indicate that you don't believe in spirits you're actually a racist asshole who worships White Science" - this is literally just evangelizing and I'm blocking you
