Thirst • Atash • العطش
First-time director Tawfik Abu Wael gives us a movie that is both family tragedy and ambiguous political parable about displaced Palestinians in Israel.
Its scorched landscape makes it look like a Middle Eastern spaghetti western. Non-professional Hussein Yassin Mahajne plays Shukri, an angry and defeated Palestinian man in middle-age who has taken his family out of the city to live in a deserted valley; he sets up a rickety water-pipeline from a hillside spring to run all the way down to a single tap, and makes his son stand guard over it in a paranoid rota with himself.
Shukri has a dark and guilty secret, and victim status is difficult to assign in this gripping film, in which politics and history have, at one or two removes, shaped a mysterious fable of transgression.
I hope you appreciated this article. Before you move on, I was hoping you would consider taking the step of supporting the Guardian’s journalism.
From Elon Musk to Rupert Murdoch, a small number of billionaire owners have a powerful hold on so much of the information that reaches the public about what’s happening in the world. The Guardian is different. We have no billionaire owner or shareholders to consider. Our journalism is produced to serve the public interest – not profit motives.
And we avoid the trap that befalls much US media – the tendency, born of a desire to please all sides, to engage in false equivalence in the name of neutrality. While fairness guides everything we do, we know there is a right and a wrong position in the fight against racism and for reproductive justice. When we report on issues like the climate crisis, we’re not afraid to name who is responsible. And as a global news organization, we’re able to provide a fresh, outsider perspective on US politics – one so often missing from the insular American media bubble.
Around the world, readers can access the Guardian’s paywall-free journalism because of our unique reader-supported model. That’s because of people like you. Our readers keep us independent, beholden to no outside influence and accessible to everyone – whether they can afford to pay for news, or not.

she's sitting near a stream, fingers dancing through the waters, droplets of water falling from the tips as she raises her hand to brush against a sweaty brow. they've been riding for what seems like hours to get out of the main lands and into the surrounding forests, where they will be safe, where their dragons will be safe.
she watches a curled up me'sovahl on the opposite riverbank, lounging in the sun, looking positively pleased with herself after a few beasts worth of a meal and now a bit of time to rest her wings. atash and valen are circling the area above, taking their post as the guards whilst the other two get a bit of rest.
it's soon enough that night will be falling soon and they're going to have to find some place to bed down with their dragon kind, and because of such, they can't simply plop down in the middle of the forests. cressida thought she spotted a cave from above a few miles off, and the look of atash's bright red scales shining in the sunlight as the duo descend means they've found something.
"𝙞 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙞 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩?"
she says, a tilt of the head atash's direction, speaking to the guardian more or less than her rider. the fresh blow of steam from the dragon's nostrils prove her point, and she comes over to press her fingers against the creature's snout, smoothing a hand down her scales. much like her own dragon, she knows that atash is living on the edge, almost impossibly afraid of what war would bring to their race.
Tumblr media
as riders, they were set to protect the vale, and the people in it, but as members of an uprising, the two of them simply decided not to be used for weapons of mass destruction, and not allow themselves nor their dragons to be manipulated.
"𝙝𝙚'𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚, 𝙞 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬." she says, whispering to atash, before pressing a kiss to the dragon's scales and turning to see valen. "𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙖 𝙧𝙤𝙮𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡, 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩." from the look in atash's eyes, she can almost read the dragon's mind, not needing the telepathic connection between herself and her brother's dragon to speak words now. and there her brother is, about ready to submerge himself in the streams cool waters.
"𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡, 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧?"
she asks, a tilt of the head in @afuckedtale's direction - her fingers still absentmindedly drawing patterns across the bright crimson of atash's scales, feeling the soft yet impossibly strong creations under her touch. she's always amazed at how similar the dragon's scales are to her own, yet in a way, they're more prominent in color, a stark difference. she feels the dragon settle a bit under her touch, like her proximity to cressida has taken the weight of protecting valen alone off her heavy shoulders.

It was an Atash Bahram/highest fire or hearth temple, it houses the “victorious fire”. Atash Bahrams still exist… but as for this historical one, Burzēn-mihr means “Exalted is Mihr” (i.e. Mithra, one of the yazatas).
In (the greater) Bundahishn 9.21, 37 and 18.14 it is said that its abode (mān) was on Mt. Rēvand (Av. Raēvant). In the Atash Niyayesh 6 (litany to the fire), homage is offered to Mt. Raēvant, whose identification seems to be with a spur of the Nishapur/Neyshabur mountains in a district once known as Rēvand, in today’s Khorasan… Kay-Gushtasp (Vishtaspa) had enthroned Azar Barzin-Mehr on Mount Raevant. This Fire, which could burn without producing smoke, was brought to Earth by Asho Zartosht (Zarathustra) himself…
But anyways, yeah it was Parthian-established in NW Iran, most likely (besides the name, ‘burzēn’, which is the Parthian form, lol).
The other two great fires were Adur Farnbag and Adur Goshnasp, the first was located in today’s Pārs/Fars province.

Adur Burzen-Mihr
Artist’s impression of the Adur Burzen-Mihr, a Zoroastrian fire temple located in ancient Parthia. At the time of the Sasanian Empire it was one of the three “Great Fires”, which were the most important temples in Zoroastrianism.

The Two Severed Arms
Tumblr media
To the arms that held water, Only momentarily until they rejected it's coolness And slapped Euphrates for it's unworthiness When the parched lips of Sakina (sa) Still lamented "Al Atash" While the Euphrates flows!
To the arms that held, The water bag close to the chest, To safeguard the hopes of the children of Hussain (as) And to alleviate their longing and pain To bring water in bowls held in their tiny hands The hands, mighty enough to bring down the rains!
To the arms that lay severed On the plain of Karbala and picked one by one By the one who held those arms for thirty two years, He who broke and said, "Abbas! Where are you my dear?" The two arms that if had not been severed There wouldn't be Shaam and Sakina (sa) in tears…

An Atash Behram (Fire of Victory) is the highest grade of a fire that can be placed in a Zoroastrian fire temple as an eternal flame, the other two lower graded fires are Atash Adaran and below Adaran is the Atash Dadgah- these three grades signify the degree of reverence and dignity these are held in. The establishment and consecration of the Atash Behram fire is the most elaborate of all the grades of fire
The 16 types of fire required for an Atash Behram are:[1]
Fire used in burning a corpse
The fire used by a dyer
The fire from a house of a king or a ruling authority
Fire from a potter
Fire from a brick-maker
Fire from an ascetic
Fire from a goldsmith
Fire from a mint
Fire from an ironsmith
Fire from an armourer
Fire from a baker
Fire from a brewer
Fire from a soldier
Fire from a shepherd
Fire produced by atmospheric lightning
Fire from the house of a Zoroastrian: what is actually done is fire is collected from the houses of a Dastur (High priest/ senior priest,) a Mobad and from the house of a layman. A natural fire is also kindled by striking two flint stones and the spark igniting some sandalwood. This last fire is kept with the 16th fire
Whereas fires from professions/ work listed above is obtained by a Zoroastrian layman or priest approaching the person and requesting he be allowed to collect burning embers from the fire, in the case of fire from a burning corpse, the Zoroastrian waits for the corpse to burn down, then with a metal ladle, with handle at least three feet in length, he fills the ladle with sandalwood or other inflammable wood filings, these ignite by heat from the burning embers of the pyre, the person making sure the ladle does not touch the hot embers of the funeral pyre.

Clint squinted at the skinny, rough-hewn tunnel and snorted, “Couldn’t you guys build it any bigger?” He was going to scrape all his skin off his hands wriggling through there. He pulled his shooting gloves out his pack for a little protection. Atash laughed at him, “It is a good job you’re so short.” “I am not short. I’m just the right size.” Clint eyed the tunnel again, “I’m possibly a bit too tall.”

🍂🥀🍂 Today is the 2nd day of Muharram.
On the 2nd day of Muharram, Husayn's caravan reached Karbala’. Thousands of Yazid's soldiers were already there, having arrived long before the Imam.
The small tribe living in Karbala’ gathered around Husayn's caravan. Imam Husayn enquired about the price of the land in Karbala’. He then bought the entire land.
Then, he first spoke to the menfolk of the tribe.
“O, menfolk of Karbala’! We have not come here to fight. Yazid's soldiers will fight with us and we will be killed. They will not bury our bodies and our bodies will be left to the wild animals of the desert. I request a favour from you. Please, bury our bodies.
Imam Husayn then turned to the womenfolk of the tribe.
“Ladies of Karbala’! Your menfolk, out of fear of Yazid's soldiers might not bury our bodies. Ladies! When your men are working in the fields, please come out of your houses and bury our bodies.
Somehow Imam Husayn did not feel the men nor the women would carry out his request.
Sadly, he turned to the children who had gathered and spoke gently to them.
Children! If your father or your mother are unable to bury us, I beg you to throw a fistful of sand over our bodies while you are playing in the fields. That way, children, our bodies will slowly get buried.”
Then, he turned to everyone who had gathered around and spoke again.
“My second request to you all is to look after the people who will come to visit our graves after our death. They will be my guests so please look after them and feed them for three days.”
Imam then ordered the tents to be pitched by the river. It was very hot in Karbala’ and the supply of water was absolutely essential for survival.
‘Abbas, commander of Husayn's army, with his men, started to pitch the tents by the river. The commanders of Yazid's army ordered their men to pull out Husayn's tents. They stopped Husayn's tents from being pitched by the river.
‘Abbas became very angry. He pulled out his sword and wanted to kill the enemies.
‘Abbas, the lion son of ‘Ali, was like his father. He was very brave and strong. The enemies feared him. If he wanted the tents to be pitched by the river, then Yazid's men even though in thousands, would not be able to stop him.
Husayn saw what was happening and quickly intervened. He knew his brother's temper and strength.
“‘Abbas! My brother ‘Abbas! Put your sword back. ‘Abbas, we have not come here to fight. Later on, people will say that we started the battle for water. ‘Abbas! My brother ‘Abbas! Calm down and put your sword back! Let us move away from here. We will pitch our tents elsewhere.”
‘Abbas considered his brother to be his master and always obeyed his commands. He put his sword back and ordered his men to pitch their tents away from the river.
This was the 2nd of Muharram. As nights and days passed by, the scene in Karbala’ changed.
Day by day Yazid's army increased in number. Nearly 20,000 of Yazid’s soldiers surrounded Husayn's tents.
Why so many to fight no more than 72 men in Husayn's army?
Despite having so many men in Yazid's army, his commanders were still worried because the 72 men in Husayn's army were no ordinary men. They were brave, faithful and did not fear death.
Yazid's soldiers knew this and therefore thought of a way to weaken Husayn's army.
On 7th Muharram, Yazid's commanders ordered their men to stop water from reaching Husayn's tents.
There were many ladies and children with Husayn and they suffered a lot without water and food.
For three days, one could here children crying for water
“Al-Atash! Al-Atash! Al-Atash! Water! Water! Water! Thirst! Thirst! Thirst!”
‘Abbas could hear this. He could hear his beloved Sakina crying for water. ‘Abbas loved Sakina dearly and always got her anything she wanted.
Every time ‘Abbas heard Sakina crying for water, he shook with grief.
‘Abbas! Poor ‘Abbas, could not bear to hear Sakina crying.
“Al-Atash! Al-Atash! Al-Atash!” echoed through the land of Karbala’ for three days and nights. Many little children died from thirst and hunger.
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaih Raja’oon!
We are from Allah and to Him we will return!
Matam Al-Husayn!

Afghani artist & entreprenuer Samira Atash presents the history and argument that Muslims arrived in the Western Hemisphere long before Christopher Columbus.
If your first reaction to this content is "how come this was never taught in U.S., Mexico, etc.?" once again consider the historical implications of Edward Said's notion of Orientalism.

Sayyidah Zainab (s.a) Tafsir Before the tragedy of Karbala.
( The Day of Sorrow and Calamity ).
Sayyidah Zainab (s.a) used to hold regular classes in Madina for the women in which She used to impact with Her knowledge very concisely a Islamic Law and Tafsir of the Qur'an.
In Madina, Her husband (Abdullah ibn Ja'far) asked Her to open a school for the daughters of Arabs in the house.
And Sayyidah Zainab (s.a) said: "Where will you go if they come in Our house?"
And Her Husband replied: "I will go to the farms, when they came!"
Sayyidah Zainab (s.a) smile and said:
"But, We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah (swt) will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He (swt) will surely make evident the liars: (Qur'an, 29: 3).
She delivered Her classes in an eloquent manner. She became to be known as Faseeha (Skilfully fluent), then She came to kufa when Imam Ali (as) (Her Father) moved there, and She was called BALIAH (Intensely eloquent).
One day, Sayyidah Zainab (sa) was discussing the tafsir of Qur'an in kufa when Imam Ali (as) happened to pass by.
He (Imam Ali (as) asked Her; "Are you teaching these women the tafsir of Qur'an..?"
Sayyidah Zainab (sa) replied: " Yes father! the first verse of surah Mariam (Mary (the mother of Jesus) which begins with "KAF-HAA-YAA-AYYN-SUAD!!!"
Imam Ali (as) said: " Let Me explain the meaning and described the secrets of the letters that compose this verse, He (Imam Ali (as) then wept and said:
KAF... stands for Kar'bala...
HAA... stands for halakat (martyrdom)...
YAA... stands for Yazid (la)...
AYYN... stands for Atash (thirst of Imam Hussain (as)...
SUAD... stands for Sabr (patience of Imam Hussain (as)".....
