OKAY GUYS

so. you know how a lot of people hc about the gotham accent in general dc media? well i always love this hc because accents are just so cool to me. so hear me out (this post is specific to the gotham tv show universe but can be generalized to any universe a cataclysm/No Man's Land event has occured)

earlier i was on tiktok and i found a video talking about the human tendency to create accents over time. (the video talked about how friend groups and families create accents/dialects which is?? so cool?? but i digress)

anyway, this led me to learn about a study about a group of scientists living in antarctica and how, over the period of just one winter, their vowel sounds had begun to merge together to create the beginnings of an accent. so now, i'll relate this to the cataclysm event.

to cause this event, during which gothamites are cut off in basically every way from the outside world, the bridges around gotham are bombed and destroyed (at least in the gotham tv universe). in this same universe, the time in which they are completely undisturbed (besides one guy communicating over a radio to one lady) is 97 days (over 3 months), at which time a military strike force (kinda. they're evil) is sent in to basically kill all of the criminals there. however, these people really only communicate limitedly with police, gang leaders, and like one time with bruce wayne. but that's about it. reunification with the outside world only began after day 391. that's over an entire year of near-complete separation from the outside world.

now, they already started off most likely having some kind of accent, especially noticeable in the people who lived primarily in the city. (even if the accent isn't particularly strong/differentiated at the time.) however, now they've spent an entire year together, alone in a big city. this has the makings of a stronger accent (at least for those who were stranded in gotham when this event occurred).

one of the important things to keep in mind when considering accents/dialects is the use of specialized vocabulary words, and lemme tell ya, gotham 100% has that. even excluding all of the names they have for people and the general gang info these people have, they still have multiple different terms for parts of town (ex: the financial district = penguin's territory, etc. with the other gangs in power at the time). on top of even this, the amount of stuff that just casually goes on in gotham is seen to completely flabbergast outsiders all the time. they likely have slang that is used to refer to various things the rogues do, or things about violence, gang wars, rations, barracks, etc. there is SO MUCH opportunity for an accent to originate here??

of course, once the events of No Man's Land end and reunification happens, a ton of gothamites who weren't there during it move back in and the accent is dispersed among the population. it likely is in part shared and, over time, becomes part of common vernacular, and, in part, deteriorates, especially regarding things that are no longer as common in the distant future (ex. referring to the financial district as penguin's terf 10 years after this happens would be a bit odd). however, i do believe that this would create a lasting impact on the overall population of gotham, even if only minorly.

(to those of you who keep up with my de-aged!gotham bruce au, this is going to be featured in some of the up-and-coming chapters (slang that feels off to others, weird references, a stronger accent, if only slightly, etc.). if you have any ideas or thoughts on this topic feel free to chime in!!! i love chatting and some help brainstorming on this would be appreciated <33)

One of my favorite Henry (Or Henry and Walter) moments is this very very in the background scene from Season 1 Episode 3 at 33:50. It's right in between Simon heading off to meet Wille to stay for the weekend and in the middle of Wille texting Simon. For some reason that will never make sense to me the English subtitles call Henry Vincent and then call Walter Henry in this scene, but it's Henry and Walter for sure, lol.

In the English dubs:

Henry: Well, here's the thing, our parents knew each other growing up.

Henry: They dated for a year [unintelligible because some background boy talks louder] before...

Walter: Wow, that's crazy! I had no idea.

Henry: No, I know.

Walter: How long have you known?

Henry: I know-- I know because my like my dad recognized your last name so he like, he like asked me if, if I know your or your family.

Walter: Oh! Okay.

Henry: Yeah I know.

Walter: That explains why there was [unintelligible because someone who sounds very British randomly says what sounds like "bloody vibe" over the top lol]

Henry: Yeah it's really like, like they knew each other

I can't speak Swedish so I don't know what the Swedish version says and the subs stop to focus on Simon and Wille texting (as you do, haha). This is one of my favorite moments though because it's so in the background and just a cute little moment between two friends. It also kind of seems like they're adlibbing here maybe? This is just after parents day and unless I missed it we don't actually see Henry or Walter with their parents.

But we really don't get a lot of information about most of the side characters, and here we have Henry and Walter telling us that their parents knew each other when they were younger and that they even dated each other for a whole year? I need to know everything!

Also it gives me so many plot ideas, maybe not even for the show but for fanfic or something. Like Henry's parents and Walter's parents are divorced and then Henry and Walter become stepbrothers when their parents get back together, or what if Henry's dad and Walter's mom had Walter and then at the same time Henry's dad and mom had Henry and they're half brothers.

I've been left under stimulated again so even though the post didn't reach enough notes I'll still post the writing critique but I won't tag it. @furudolove was too curious and I'm too attached to the itch of the compliant to leave it unaddressed.

Ok, so background: the protagonist of the work in question is isekai'd to a fantastical game-like world with 3 other randos who are of no significance to this post. Our protagonist meets someone who agrees to be his teammate since due to the rules and restrictions of the (game) world he's found himself in can't meaningfully do damage (and the prior person who held his position gave it a bad name by terrorizing the kingdom [for all that slavery they were doing] so he's hard up for options). This person then gets the protagonist drunk steals his stuff and makes...claims against him. Brushing quickly past how I feel about that development our protagonist is left penniless lacking in allies and basicially helpless until he's approached by a slaver and decides to buy a 10 year old girl to fight for him since slaves can't lie to their master...because of magicial shock tattoos. Because our protagonist has lost his faith in others unless he can magicially compel their obedience (I mean he takes the nice male slave owner at his word but whatever) and this is NOT my compliant. This is clearly set up to be the protagonist's flaws making decisions that he knows are wrong, but gives in to due to weakness.

Earlier I said the fantasy world our protagonist got transported to is game-like and the important parts for understanding where I'm going with this is: this world has explicit exp, levels, upgrading weapons oh and when the race of people that little girl is levels up they physically mature. Like a pokemon except it's a shivering malnourished child who's obidence is kept via constant threat of inescapable electric torture. Look, I agreed not to complain about the protagonist owning a slave thing on the face of it I'm not here to downplay it.

All that background out of the way and with the understanding that slavery is morally wrong and the protagonist's growth should be measured by his ability to place trust in people without needing to hold all of the power and the author does the worst thing possible for the narrative: textual justification of slavery in-universe. Specifically the existence of Slave Experience and The Slave Shield which both give notable consistent passive boons to uhhh...human property. This singular writing choice in my mind entirely undercuts any defence of the series as it serves to entrench both the protagonist and the fanbase to defend slavery.

This is not a hypothetical either there are many online discussions where fans of the series will point out that these boons are why the protagonist needs to keep his slaves, and keep feeding and being a positive face. To. Slavery. To the machine of the slave trade. Worse, it means the protagonist not only doesn't have to cooperate with other independent individuals but only on his group of literal slaves for which he's rewarded his growth as a person in the narrative be damned.

Slavery was either never going to be an issue the author wanted to tackle or it became the series' "gimmick" as a "dark subversive isekai" and got stapled to it forever and so it got justified. Celeberated. Benefical actually to the slaves who grow up overnight to be nubile women who the protagonist personally raised just how he wanted before marrying her in the end. Just be a Good Slave Owner and reap endless benefits as the world distorts to justify your obsessive controlling misanthropy lest the teenage boys projecting onto the protagonist think they need to grow the fuck up and trust another person.

When the argument is set like this, it definitely sounds bad, and even insensitive, for anyone to ask Bruce to kill. Whether that be Jason, a different character, or even the readers. But I think what factors in most people's perspective of the argument is everything else that Bruce does, or is willing to do, to avoid killing. While I don't really subscribe to everything in canon, there was one instance where Bruce sliced open Jason's neck with a batarang to stop him from killing the Joker. Technically speaking... You stopped a murder! Subjectively speaking, you just cut open your son's neck for the Joker. And then of course there are other arguments, like how Dick killed the Joker that one time and could've just left him to stay dead but instead revived him. Things like that. Personally, a big part of my stance surrounding Bruce refusal to kill is that... Murder is still murder. You wouldn't ask anyone to do that, vigilante or not. It is a different type of cruelty to ask that for a vigilante when they are already standing on a precipice with the law. And then, of course, there is also the argument that you wouldn't ask Cass to kill, after everything she's gone through. Again, that would be insensitive, and if the argument applies for Cass then it should apply for Bruce too. So in the end, Bruce is not wrong to abstain from killing.

He's just a really big dick about it sometimes. A lot of the times. Honestly, a lot of this would be fixed if the government in the DCverse (whether it be local or federal) waived the insanity plea for some cases, so that they couldn't just be sent back to Arkham. But again, some people are against the death penalty... Hm, this really is a fucky situation.

I still vote that they should trap the Joker in a warehouse he rigged and wait for him to kick the bucket from his own machinations. That way, no one gets the fault for his death. If they can't save every civilian, then surely they can't save every supervillain too. 🤭

All in all, I'm not really here for the discourse around this subject. I'm really just here to level it to you, and say that this situation is really fucked up and no one is going to win. Even if Jason decides not to kill anymore, or Bruce decides to kill, people will still suffer because of the system itself. Besides... I don't really want to see a Batman who kills. We've seen many instances and versions of a Batman who kills and Gotham is never better for it. But that's why we have other vigilantes or anti-heroes who are willing to do what Bruce cannot.

But no one should ever have to kill to survive or protect others. That's the fault of a broken world. And that's why we have fanfiction for. To fix that broken world because DC are FUCKING COWARDS-
