She works as a security guard to help cover rent.
Nicky is Becca's step-sister, ever since their parents got married around the same time they moved to Wisconsin. She is the reason Seph and Becca ended up in Columbus after college, inviting them to join her at a new place she was moving too.
She is a graphic designer for a milk company.
Allie is a jovial, charismatic grad student. She is arguably the only "normal" person in the whole apartment. Though, the normalcy of a person willing to do deep ocean dives to take geological surveys should definitely be questioned. She rooms with Brynn, and the two of them are near inseparable. She spends most of her scant free time tending to her hydroponics.
Allie is unemployed, but grows weed and assists with Brynn's scams to make a bit on the side.
Brynn is a stoic, smooth talking twig of a woman. She is the tallest member of the friend group, as her parents were obsessed with the status of having a "designer baby" but could only afford increased height. Brynn is a fashion school graduate, but has struggled to land any jobs.
Brynn is unemployed, but performs various scams such as tarot readings to cover her part. She is very good at it.
Luke is one of the original tenants of this apartment, having lived with Caleb for several years before the rest of the current motley crew moved in. He spends his time coming up with the most trend-chasingest, tech-broest, stupidest ideas you can imagine and investing everything he currently has into that idea, only inevitably fail. His personal enemy is Seph, mostly because he loves Becca.
He contributes nothing to rent, as Caleb covers for him.
Caleb is the longest tenant living in this apartment, despite being the youngest of them. He never went to college, instead he immediately started work in trade and labor jobs out of High School. He would probably have enough to buy a house if he didn't constantly cover for Luke and get suckered into Luke's terrible ideas. He's the only person in the apartment who can afford a car.
Caleb is currently working as an electrician and gig work delivery driver.
The Workplace:
Seph works at Iliad's Reclamation and Fabrication, a salvage shop that turns scrap into various tools and other useful items--notably mobility aids. She models and fabricates using pirated Stark tech.

They hadn’t talked much lately. Cases were coming in heavy, they didn’t have time just for themselves anymore. Not that Spencer wanted to anyway. Ever since a month ago, the last thing he wanted to do is be in a room alone with Temporary Unit Chief Derek Morgan. And yet here they were. Stuck in a car together, as they drove to a prison 500 miles out of town. Just Spencer and Derek’s stupid perfect body, and his stupidly cute face, and the way he called him-
“Pretty boy!” Ah! there it is! That sweet, voice, drowning out all the dirty thoughts that had ever crossed Spencers mind, replacing it with pure bliss, like walking hand in hand, or kissing in the rain, where it’s just the two of them, fuck everything else around. When their lips met, so sweet, so… blissful. Drowning out how all he wanted was Derek to push him aga-
“Spencer!” The older man snapped Spencer out of his thoughts.
“Uh- yeah?” He stuttered.
“You’re staring, ya know?” He said with a smirk.
“Oh, sorry, I- ahem- I didn’t mean to...” the boy chuckled.
“It’s alright, what were you thinking about?” He looked between Spencer and the road.
Oh if only you knew…
“Well then tell me!” Derek said, making Spencer realize he said it out loud.
“Oh um… I was just thinking, that, um, you know that it’s 73.6% more likely for queer couples in the workplace to have a successful relationship then the “average” heterosexual one, but because people tend to always bottle up those feeling in fear of rejection, so it’s kind of rare, which makes the successful ones even more… special…” he rambled.
“Ok… thanks kinda cute I guess, why were you thinking about it-”
“And did you know that it’s 65% more likely for your male best friend to be in love with you and never tell you then your female best friend. A study last year by the Wisconsin Health Care and Sience Devision proved that men loving men, and women loving women couples occur more often in friendships then—”
“What are you saying, Spencer?” Derek cut him off, furrowing his brows.
“I think you know what I’m saying…” the young doctor whispered under his breath.
“Well, I don’t, so please, enlighten me!” There was an assertive tone to Derek’s words, but Spencer choose to read as confusion instead of disgust and anger.
“I’m saying that…” they boy wonder looked down in shame, and fiddled with his sachet, finding it much more interesting then the conversation at hand.
“Reid, do you… do you like me?” He asked once and for all, and Spencer didn’t say anything for a few moments.
I’m sorry! I don’t mean to, I just do! We’ve been through so much, and sometimes it’s just hard to differentiate the difference between platonic love and romantic love when all I want is to wake up next to you, and hold your hand, and have you right next to me when I wake up from a nightmare. And I know it’s too much to ask, and I know you don’t feel the same, but I just can’t help but feel this way for you, and I’m so so sorry!
You don’t choose who you fall in love with
“I know kid, it’s just…” Derek swallowed, and stayed silent for a while, trying to gather his thoughts. “I’m not like that…”
“I know!” Spencer choked out, trying hold back a sob. “That’s what makes it so much harder. To know you could never feel the same…” he let a tear stream down his face. He lifted his head, gazing out the window, thinking about how this will affect their relationship. And how it wouldn’t had he just stayed quiet. And as he watched the trees pass by, he wondered what it would be like to have Derek Morgan all for himself. But we don’t always get what we want, now do we?

After that things got… better. The constant bickering had shifted to not-so-often bickering, and they’d gotten extremely closer. There was a standing date night every Friday night-or at least every Friday night available. Even when they were too tired to do anything special, like a picnic or a walk in the park, they always found their way to the other’s place sometime during the night. They even slept in the same bed, cuddled, woke up to cute little stares, and made breakfast together. This goes on for so long, Derek forgets the time in his life where they weren’t so domestic. But Spencer can’t forget. And if you were to ask him, he’d tell you that it had been 5 years, 2 months and 17 days since he told Derek about his feelings. Not that it matters anyways...

Spencer placed his lips lightly on Derek’s neck, startling the man awake. He closed his eyes, and played clueless to Derek’s confusion, pretending to be asleep so he wouldn’t get caught. Derek looked around the plane for a little, before he gave up, giving in to tiredness once more. He shifted in his seat, placing his hand on top of Spencer’s that was hooked around the older agent’s other arm. He leaned his head to the side, ignoring the puffs of air he felt on his neck, from where Spencer’s head was dropped. He placed a kiss to the boy’s forehead before simply leaning his head against Spencer’s, falling asleep moments later.
It was moments like these that always got to Spencer. When he was feeling like the world was collapsing in front of him and there was nothing he can do but watch as his life falls apart before his eyes- it was moments like these that always seemed to snap him out of it. He could think of lighthearted conversations he had with JJ, he could think about talking in different languages, book-talk, with Emily, he could think of messing around with Penelope, and how he let her teach him the ways of the internet. He could think of how sometimes, while admiring from afar- almost like an outsider’s perspective- he realized had found a home within the walls of solving for murder, and how he finally found the closest thing to a stable family he could ever ask for, with the best ‘mom and dad’ he could ever need.
He thought of how selfish it was of him to hope there were cases in self-intoxicating moments like these, so he could just go back to his family, and no longer poke wholes in his apartment walls, the loneliness drowning out every happy thought he could ever have.
But no matter what he thought of, all he ever really needed to think about was the piercing eyes of Derek Morgan. A man so good, that not even a love confession made him want to leave Spencer’s side. Hell, if anything, it brought them closer together! And that’s all he ever needed to think about to be brought back down from the clouds of his own mind. And it was moments like these that always seemed to ground him when he felt the highest. So he did what he had to, and enjoyed the moment as best he could.
With Derek asleep once more, he placed his lips back to his neck, this time it was a little easier, given that the older man had shifted closer to him. He left the lightest, most heartwarming trail of kisses all over Derek’s s neck. He loved how comforting it was, the simple gesture, and his lips being pressed against the older man’s skin was the only thing he ever wanted. He held on to Derek’s arm a little tighter, almost out of fear of losing him.
“Everything alright there, pretty boy?” He hears Derek whisper and freezes. “You’re holding onto my arm like your life depends on it.”
Silence.
“I know you’re awake!” Derek lifts his head and brings his free hand up, fingertips barely under Spencer’s chin, solemnly to make him look back at Derek. And he does so with puppy eyes, looking like he’s begging for mercy at the arms of a monster. But Derek Morgan could never be a monster.
“Hey, you know you can tell me anything, right?” Derek asks. He smiles. Puppy eyes still present in his facial expression, but there’s a warmth to it now. He nods slightly, tilting his head forward so that his forehead leaned against Derek’s cheek. He left it there for a few seconds, closing his eyes, smelling the home-like scent of his best friend before he dropped his head sideways onto Derek’s shoulder once more, picking up in the sweet, coffee scented trail he left off. The older man moved the hand that had involuntarily cupped Spencer’s face, and ran his fingers through the boy’s hair instead.
You see, it was in moments like these that felt like nothing could ever come between them. He was head off the heels in love with Derek Morgan, and moments like these fed into the fantasy of Derek being just as in love with him. And even though Spencer knew that that’s all it was- a fantasy- he pushed those thoughts aside for later. Staying here- with Derek- was all he ever truly needed. He would miss the team, and the thrill of the chase, but if something happened, he would be able to live without the rest of them. He could start life anew for all he cared about, as long as there was Derek Morgan by his side, he new everything would always be ok. And he couldn’t dare imagine a world where they had never met. Because you see, it was moments like these, that made all the pain and suffering worth enduring.

Today, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that people who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus can stop wearing masks, both outdoors and indoors, except on public transportation and in crowded indoor venues. The new guidelines come as cases are dropping and as the U.S. is now vaccinating children ages 12 and up. They are intended, at least in part, to encourage people to get the vaccine. The CDC guidelines do not override federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial laws, or regulations put in place by businesses and workplaces. Still, they are a big step toward emerging from the pandemic.
"If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic," Walensky said. President Joe Biden, who made vaccines the centerpiece of his early administration, spoke to reporters without a mask. “I think it’s a great milestone, a great day,” he said.
On morning television, Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) hammered her point that the former president continues to endanger our nation. She also insisted that the U.S. must have a January 6 commission, as it has had an investigative commission for every similar threat, but said that fellow Republicans opposed such a commission because it threatened those “who may have been playing a role they should not have been playing.”
Those who were playing a role they should not have been playing today turned out to include an active-duty Marine Corps officer, Major Christopher Warnagiris, who was arrested for assaulting the Capitol on January 6.
And there are others associated with the administration who may have been playing a role they should not have been, aside from the events of January 6.
For weeks now, rumors have swirled about Trump loyalist Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his friend Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector for Seminole County, Florida, who is under indictment for sex trafficking of a minor and 32 other counts. Papers filed today suggest that Greenberg has made a deal with prosecutors. The terms of the deal are not public, but they might not bode well for Gaetz.
At the New York Times, Adam Goldman and Mark Mazzetti wrote today that Project Veritas (that right-wing group always trying to catch people on video doing something illegal) was part of an effort during the Trump years to discredit both FBI agents and H.R. McMaster, the former three-star general who was at the time Trump’s national security advisor. Project leaders hoped to get the agents and McMaster, who was perceived as being insufficiently loyal to the former president, to say something damning about the president so they could be removed. One of the participants in the project was Barbara Ledeen, a staff member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which was, at the time, led by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA).
But the real blockbuster political story of the day came in the form of a video obtained by Mother Jones and written about in a detailed article there by Ari Berman and Nick Surgey. The leaked video shows Jessica Anderson, the executive director of Heritage Action for America—the political arm of the right-wing Heritage Foundation think tank—explaining to big-money donors that Heritage Action has worked closely with Republican state legislators to enact voter suppression laws. “In some cases, we actually draft them for them,” she said, “or we have a sentinel on our behalf give them the model legislation so it has that grassroots, from-the-bottom-up type of vibe.”
The story is not entirely new. Heritage (as it is known) published a report last February outlining “best practices” for voting, many of which are in the new bills coming out of Republican-dominated state legislatures. And in a March article for the New York Times, Nick Corasaniti and Reid J. Epstein outlined the role of Heritage Action in Georgia’s and Arizona’s voting restrictions, noting that at least 23 of the proposed state bills that dealt with voting had language that looked like that of Heritage. They also wrote that Heritage plans to spend $24 million to change voting laws in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, Texas, and Wisconsin before the 2022 election, and that the person behind the Heritage voting policies is Hans von Spakovsky, who mainstreamed the idea of voter fraud in the Republican Party, although experts agree it is vanishingly rare.
What is new and dramatic about the video is seeing Anderson make her pitch to donors for a coordinated right-wing effort to take the vote away from their opponents. She talks of working with similar groups: “We literally give marching orders for the week ahead,” Anderson said. “All so we’re singing from the same song sheet of the goals for that week and where the state bills are across the country.”
Heritage Action is fighting hard against the Democrats’ For the People Act, which would protect the right to vote, end partisan gerrymandering, and limit money in politics. Heritage summarized the bill, which it called the “Corrupt Politicians Act,” in a short sheet for lawmakers. Anderson explained: “We’ve made sure that every single member of Congress knows just how bad the bill is…. Then we’ve made sure there’s an echo chamber of support around these senators driven by your Heritage Action activists and sentinels across the country where we’ve driven hundreds of thousands of calls, emails, place[d] letters to the editor, hosted events, and run television and digital ads.”
Democrats cannot pass the For the People Act through the Senate without buy-in from all 50 of their senators, and Surgey noted that in March, Heritage Action and similar groups bussed protesters to West Virginia from other states for a big rally at the capitol to pressure Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin.
The “grassroots” protest against ���voter fraud” is, in fact, conceived, funded, and organized by one of the most powerful elite political organizations in the country.
Manchin has suggested he will not support the For the People Act without Republican support, so yesterday, he suggested a different way to address the recent voter suppression measures. Under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, states and local governments that had a history of racist election laws had to get clearance from federal officials before they put new election rules in place. The Supreme Court gutted that rule in 2013 with the Shelby County v. Holder decision (which is why all these new laws are going into the books). Manchin called for restoring the old system of preclearance, but applying it to all states and territories, not just the nine to which it had previously applied, thus taking away the Supreme Court’s objection that it singled out certain states.
Manchin’s workaround wouldn’t deal with gerrymandering or big money, but it would certainly be a start toward leveling the electoral playing field, and historically, support for the Voting Rights Act was bipartisan. No longer. Almost immediately, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) shot Manchin’s plan down.

What the Best Mentors Do
Mentorship comes in many flavors. It doesn’t always work unless leaders bear in mind a few common principles.
Mentorship comes in many flavors. It doesn’t always work unless leaders bear in mind a few common principles.
Over the past few years, as part of my book, I’ve been researching how leaders can better judge and develop their talent in light of a changing, more purpose-driven, more tech-enabled work environment. Having interviewed close to 100 of the most admired leaders across business, culture, arts, and government, one important characteristic stands out: They do everything they can to imprint their “goodness” onto others in ways that make others feel like fuller versions of themselves. Put another way, the best leaders practice a form of leadership that is less about creating followers and more about creating other leaders. How do they do that? I’ve noticed four things the best mentors do:
Put the relationship before the mentorship. All too often, mentorship can evolve into a “check the box” procedure instead of something authentic and relationship-based. For real mentorship to succeed, there needs to be a baseline chemistry between a mentor and a mentee. Studies show that even the best-designed mentoring programs are no substitute for a genuine, intercollegial relationship between mentor and mentee. One piece of research, conducted by Belle Rose Ragins, a mentoring expert and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, demonstrated that unless mentees have a basic relationship with their mentors, there is no discernable difference between mentees and those not mentored. All this is to say that mentoring requires rapport. At best, it propels people to break from their formal roles and titles (boss versus employee) and find common ground as people.
Focus on character rather than competency. Too many mentors see mentoring as a training program focused around the acquisition of job skills. Obviously, one element of mentorship involves mastering the necessary competencies for a given position. But the best leaders go beyond competency, focusing on helping to shape other people’s character, values, self-awareness, empathy, and capacity for respect. They know in the long run that there is a hard truth about soft matters and that these values-based qualities matter a lot more than skill enhancement. There are many ways to mentor people around these values and to build greater self-awareness.
Shout loudly with your optimism, and keep quiet with your cynicism. Your mentee might come to you with some off-the-wall ideas or seemingly unrealistic ambitious. You might be tempted to help them think more realistically, but mentors need to be givers of energy, not takers of it. Consider why an idea might work, before you consider why it might not. The best method I know for thinking this way is the 24×3 rule for optimism. I’ve written about this approach and tried to practice it for years, but it’s very difficult to master. Each time you hear a new idea, see if it is possible for you to spend 24 seconds, 24 minutes, or a day thinking about all the reasons that the idea is good before you criticize any aspect of it. It’s been said that the world prefers conventional failure over unconventional success; good mentors should encourage exploration of the latter.
Be more loyal to your mentee than you are to your company. Of course, we all want to retain our best and brightest. We also want our people to be effective in our organizations. That said, the best mentors recognize that in its most noble and powerful form, leadership is a duty and service toward others, and that the best way to inspire commitment is to be fully and selflessly committed to the best interests of colleagues and employees. Don’t seek only to uncover your mentees’ strengths; look for their underlying passions, too. Help them find their calling. Most of us have experienced people, such as friends, religious leaders, and family members, who serve as our anchors and guides outside our workplaces. Why can’t we bring this same high level of trust and support inside the workplace? In a lot of cases, we owe it to mentees to serve as something more than just career mentors.
The best mentors avoid overriding the dreams of their mentees. If an employee and a job aren’t a good fit, or if an ambitious employee realistically has limited upward mobility in a company, a good mentor will help that employee move on. They might be better suited to another role within the organization, or even to a new path somewhere else.
At its highest level, mentorship is about being “good people” and having the right “good people” around us — individuals committed to helping others become fuller versions of who they are. Which is why the organizations and leaders I’ve come to admire most are the ones devoted to bringing others along.

That anyone who wanted a decent paying job could get one. That people only worked five days a week, eight hours a day, got the whole weekend off and had a paid vacation every summer. That many jobs were union jobs, from baggers at the grocery store to the guy painting your house, and this meant that no matter how "lowly" your job was you had guarantees of a pension, occasional raises, health insurance and someone to stick up for you if you were unfairly treated.
Young people have heard of this mythical time -- but it was no myth, it was real. And when they ask, "When did this all end?", I say, "It ended on this day: August 5th, 1981."
Beginning on this date, 30 years ago, Big Business and the Right Wing decided to "go for it" -- to see if they could actually destroy the middle class so that they could become richer themselves.
And they've succeeded.
On August 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan fired every member of the air traffic controllers union (PATCO) who'd defied his order to return to work and declared their union illegal. They had been on strike for just two days.
It was a bold and brash move. No one had ever tried it. What made it even bolder was that PATCO was one of only two unions that had endorsed Reagan for president! It sent a shock wave through workers across the country. If he would do this to the people who were with him, what would he do to us?
Reagan had been backed by Wall Street in his run for the White House and they, along with right-wing Christians, wanted to restructure America and turn back the tide that President Franklin D. Roosevelt started -- a tide that was intended to make life better for the average working person. The rich hated paying better wages and providing benefits. They hated paying taxes even more. And they despised unions. The right-wing Christians hated anything that sounded like socialism or holding out a helping hand to minorities or women.
Reagan promised to end all that. So when the air traffic controllers went on strike, he seized the moment. In getting rid of every single last one of them and outlawing their union, he sent a clear and strong message: The days of everyone having a comfortable middle-class life were over. America, from now on, would be run this way:
The super-rich will make more, much much more, and the rest of you will scramble for the crumbs that are left.
Everyone must work! Mom, Dad, the teenagers in the house! Dad, you work a second job! Kids, here's your latch-key! Your parents might be home in time to put you to bed.
50 million of you must go without health insurance! And health insurance companies: you go ahead and decide who you want to help -- or not.
Unions are evil! You will not belong to a union! You do not need an advocate! Shut up and get back to work! No, you can't leave now, we're not done. Your kids can make their own dinner.
You want to go to college? No problem -- just sign here and be in hock to a bank for the next 20 years!
What's "a raise"? Get back to work and shut up!
And so it went. But Reagan could not have pulled this off by himself in 1981. He had some big help:
The AFL-CIO.
The biggest organization of unions in America told its members to cross the picket lines of the air traffic controllers and go to work. And that's just what these union members did. Union pilots, flight attendants, delivery truck drivers, baggage handlers -- they all crossed the line and helped to break the strike. And union members of all stripes crossed the picket lines and continued to fly.
Reagan and Wall Street could not believe their eyes! Hundreds of thousands of working people and union members endorsing the firing of fellow union members. It was Christmas in August for Corporate America.
And that was the beginning of the end. Reagan and the Republicans knew they could get away with anything -- and they did. They slashed taxes on the rich. They made it harder for you to start a union at your workplace. They eliminated safety regulations on the job. They ignored the monopoly laws and allowed thousands of companies to merge or be bought out and closed down. Corporations froze wages and threatened to move overseas if the workers didn't accept lower pay and fewer benefits. And when the workers agreed to work for less, they moved the jobs overseas anyway.
And at every step along the way, the majority of Americans went along with this. There was little opposition or fight-back. The "masses" did not rise up and protect their jobs, their homes, their schools (which used to be the best in the world). They just accepted their fate and took the beating.
I have often wondered what would have happened had we all just stopped flying, period, back in 1981. What if all the unions had said to Reagan, "Give those controllers their jobs back or we're shutting the country down!"? You know what would have happened. The corporate elite and their boy Reagan would have buckled.
But we didn't do it. And so, bit by bit, piece by piece, in the ensuing 30 years, those in power have destroyed the middle class of our country and, in turn, have wrecked the future for our young people. Wages have remained stagnant for 30 years. Take a look at the statistics and you can see that every decline we're now suffering with had it's beginning in 1981 (here's a little scene to illustrate that from my last movie).
It all began on this day, 30 years ago. One of the darkest days in American history. And we let it happen to us. Yes, they had the money, and the media and the cops. But we had 200 million of us. Ever wonder what it would look like if 200 million got truly upset and wanted their country, their life, their job, their weekend, their time with their kids back?
Have we all just given up? What are we waiting for? Forget about the 20% who support the Tea Party -- we are the other 80%! This decline will only end when we demand it. And not through an online petition or a tweet. We are going to have to turn the TV and the computer and the video games off and get out in the streets (like they've done in Wisconsin). Some of you need to run for local office next year. We need to demand that the Democrats either get a spine and stop taking corporate money -- or step aside.
When is enough, enough? The middle-class dream will not just magically reappear. Wall Street's plan is clear: America is to be a nation of Haves and Have Nothings. Is that OK for you?
Why not use today to pause and think about the little steps you can take to turn this around in your neighborhood, at your workplace, in your school? Is there any better day to start than today?

TGF Thoughts: 3x07-- The One Where Diane and Liz Topple Democracy
Yes I’m still writing these
“Admit it. You like having me here. I mean, you didn’t think you would. But then, gradually, you realize that Blum is like a shot in the arm,” Blum tells the viewers. I mean, the partners. But he’s definitely talking to the viewers. See, we are supposed to ENJOY him. We’re supposed to find his terribleness cute and endearing. We’re supposed to be captivated by him. Here’s the thing: I’m not. I just want him to go away and stop being loud, which is how I have felt from the second he first opened his mouth. And when he was silent and I didn’t know how loud he’d be? I still wanted him to go away.
Does Blum work better than most of the past attempts at Blum-like figures? Yes. He’s leaps and bounds better! Is he still an annoying ass pest? HELL FUCKING YES.
Blum compliments the partners on being “clean” and “articulate” because he’s racist and wants everyone to know it. It’s cute!! So cute and charming!!
Why are the partners having an end of the year meeting? Is it the end of their fiscal year? Is it December? I want to know.
Blum attributes a Machiavelli quote to Martin Luther King Jr, which is actually kind of hilarious. Even if I don’t like him I can appreciate when they write him well.
Blum decides he’s joining the firm and the partners ask for time to confer. Marissa is still wasting her time following him around.
Liz calls Blum a cancer and says they need to get rid of him. I agree! Adrian is on board, but wants to delay him. I’m sure that’s going to end well.
Lucca is singing Baby Shark again, which means it’s going to be stuck in my head for another day. Diane comes into her office with a task. Because Lucca’s on hold with the Sweeney divorce, and she has NO OTHER BUSINESS IN THE ENTIRE DEPARTMENT SHE MANAGES, Lucca also gets Blum duty. So now Marissa AND Lucca, two of the firm’s best employees, are stuck dealing with his bullshit. A+ management, RBL.
Is there NO OTHER EMPLOYEE at this firm that can do this task? “We had four associates on it. He sent them out on errands,” Diane explains. What the fuck? Did you not prepare them to deal with him? You gave him a staff, observed him doing no work for three weeks, and were just like, sure, associates, go run errands for Roland Blum!? What kind of management is that?! Surely there is someone at this firm other than Lucca who can ensure that lawyers do lawyering.
“Blum is seductive. We need an adult in the room,” Diane says. I don’t know which concerns me more: the fact that Diane is only just now realizing they needed to manage this problem or the fact that Diane doesn’t think any of her employees are capable of acting like adults. If that’s true, that’s also a management problem, and YIKES.
Julius is a horrible liar.
Is Blum talking to himself this week’s soliloquy? If so, kinda meh.
Rachelle has brought Liz and Diane a class action about vote rigging in 2016. Isn’t Rachelle’s job something in strategy? Shouldn’t she be distancing herself from this case and making sure it seems like she’s never met Liz or Diane?
Yes, the episode just answered it for me. Rachelle is a pollster. This seems dangerous. I also feel like Liz and Diane haven’t really made an independent choice since they started working with Rachelle.
Rachelle acts like this case is for real and not a set up. I understand that she’s effective, but she’s done so many cagey things in just a few episodes that I would cut all ties. You met her through a literal con artist, first of all. And beyond that, do you really think someone who’s going to force clients upon you to further their agenda and mess with the dynamics at your firm is not also going to give up your names if and when things get rough?
I may say this again later, but what I dislike most about this episode is that the stakes are so high, and they’re so real-world. Diane and Liz aren’t debating the ethics of voter fraud in the abstract. They’re committing a federal crime.
Lucca deals with Blum by… doing work. Blum’s “associate”-- actor Gary Carr, playing himself-- assists her. Lucca doesn’t realize he’s an actor and puts him to work. He clearly doesn’t know what he’s doing (because he’s not a lawyer).
Case stuff happens. Diane is instructed by Rachelle to ask for the software architecture, but she doesn’t find this suspicious. I know I do. Does the client usually get to tell the lawyer what evidence to request? Seems weird to me.
After court, Diane and Liz ask Rachelle why she needs the software. Uh, after they asked for it in court they ask her why she needs it? They didn’t think it was actually relevant and thought the request was suspicious and went along? Also, PRETTY DAMN OBVIOUS THAT ONE REASON TO WANT THE ARCHITECTURE OF A SOFTWARE IS TO HACK IT.
Lucca tells Diane that Gary Carr is doing good work. What? Taking it seriously I get, but good work? Good enough that Lucca would recommend Carr to Diane? All we’ve seen him do as a “lawyer” is misidentify a piece of evidence that Lucca just had to glance at to understand.
As Lucca walks from her office to Blum’s, she overhears some associates talking about Gary Carr. See, he’s an actor and he was on Downton Abbey, a show I never watched more than a few episodes of. Lucca clearly hasn’t either. Are any of these associates really weirded out by Maia’s presence at the firm? Wasn’t she on Downton too?
Lucca confronts Gary about lying and asks him to wait in reception. There’s some awkwardness/sexual tension (the Kings’ favorite way to show sexual tension is having people be exceedingly awkward around each other) as he leaves. This plot is fun and fine, but I’d love for Lucca to get something more substantive.
Book Club meets again and Polly suggests hacking the voting machines. Diane and Liz are stunned. “Are you fucking kidding me?” Diane says, and… credits!
Book Club’s gotten pretty big. Diane’s completely against vote rigging and everyone else (except Liz) is like BUT WINNING IS MORE IMPORTANT. Polly decides to frame it as a “correction” for gerrymandering and voter intimidation. This is a more convincing argument. But it is not an argument for why Diane or Liz would risk their lives and careers for this.
Diane and Liz talk, away from the group, and Liz makes a fantastic point: “You know there are counties right now where black people are so terrorized that they can’t even show up at polls? Look, in Georgia, in 2018, a bus filled with black senior citizens was stopped by the police so they wouldn’t be allowed to vote. 53,000 voter registrations of black voters were held up by the Georgia Secretary of State. Diane, you don’t [know]. Look, we share a lot of things, but we do not share histories. I have a college friend who was kicked off the voter rolls in Ohio. And my uncle was denied the right to vote in the last election in Wisconsin. I mean, at some point, these stories become more than just anecdotes. They’re something bigger. This democracy you talk about, this doesn’t exist for a lot of us. It didn’t exist for my grandparents, it didn’t exist for my parents, and it is slowly being taken away from me.” Diane interjects that they should fight it in the courts. “The courts. The courts that overturned the Civil Rights Voting Act in 2013? So, excuse me if I just need a moment to reflect on this unique possibility. One person hits a few buttons and suddenly black voters are re-enfranchised. That means something very different to me than it does to you.”
WOW. I had to write out that whole speech because it’s great. It calls attention to a very important real world issue (if you want to learn more about voter suppression, I highly recommend One Person, No Vote by Carol Anderson). It doesn’t convince me for a second that hacking the voting machines is the right approach, but it’s enough that I understand where Liz is coming from and why Diane’s idealistic speeches don’t sway her.
Even if I don’t think this speech does a good job of making me understand why Liz is willing to jeopardize her career (tbh I have a bit of trouble believing Liz would be drawn to Book Club in the first place), it’s so good as an explanation of voter suppression I don’t really care.
Rachelle is a master manipulator. She decides to add an amendment to their plan-- only enough votes to offset disenfranchisement of black and Latino voters will be changed. Uh huh. I don’t buy it. And even if it’s true, this is so clearly manipulative it’s ridiculous. What about Rachelle is so trustworthy Liz would risk her career to help her?!
I’m stuck on this, I know, but I can’t see Liz making these choices, no matter how good the arguments or how noble the cause.
The group votes and things don’t go Diane’s way… but she acts like now that they’ve voted, she has no choice but to break the law. I don’t understand. Why is her allegiance to this group when she (and Liz) are the ones who would be most directly responsible for leaking the software architecture?
“You signed on for this. The ends justify the means, so don’t get all outraged that we’re willing to follow through,” Rachelle tells Diane. This sounds a lot like the “we’re defense attorneys, therefore we have to represent Lemond Bishop” logic I hate so much.
Oh goodie, it’s the weird scene in which I thought Lucca was going to start masturbating, and a Good Fight Short about Downton Abbey. This plotline does nothing for me. When I say I want Lucca plotlines, I don’t mean I want weird romances. I mean I want to see Lucca making friends, raising her child, and navigating the workplace.
I will take all the Lucca plots I can get but please, something with substance next time!
Blum is mad and sniffing around Reddick’s sexual harassment issues. Should’ve just gone public when you had the chance, partners.
Adrian physically attacks Blum, which is… a way to handle this. Go away, Blum. Adrian also decides to go after Blum’s illegal courtroom tactics.
Have I mentioned that I love Liz’s office bathroom?
Adrian suggests threatening Blum and Liz responds “that’s like threatening a bull with a red flag.” If it weren’t for the fact that she’s done nothing to prevent him from infiltrating her firm, I would say Liz has by far the best reactions to Blum.
“We knew this day would come, Liz,” Adrian explains, referring to the day when the allegations against Carl Reddick would surface. Well if you knew that WHY WOULD YOU PAY OFF THE WOMEN AND MAKE IT LOOK WORSE FOR YOURSELF???
They managed to write a Lucca plot I don’t feel like recapping. That’s really amazing.
I care even less since I know how it ends.
Diane insists on being the one to argue for obtaining the software architecture, since she’s a lawyer and it’s her job. She gives a passionate speech that’s about the sanctity of the vote but it’s really, of course, her argument against voter fraud. The irony!
I don’t get why Diane continues to tie herself to this!!! None of this plot makes sense to me from a character POV!!! Well, except the part where Diane gets so angry she follows a con woman to a resistance group. That makes complete sense.
Diane distances herself from the group AFTER arguing in court for the architecture? Okay. Sure. So noble.
Here’s the best part of this Lucca-dates-Gary-Carr plot: Marissa recognizes him from The Deuce and not Downton Abbey, which is a little detail that’s verrrrryyyyyy Marissa.
Hey, it’s the subpoena guy! (Yes, I care more about that than watching Blum get a tattoo.)
RBL wants to get Blum disbarred. I want him to be disbarred too, so he can become irrelevant and go away.
Jay finds a Republican hack in the software architecture. Gasp!
Blum starts screaming and banging on windows and everyone ignores him. This scene is an accurate representation of how I feel about Blum. The louder he is, the less I care about him.
Will never be a fan of three way call split screens.
WHY ARE Y’ALL TALKING ABOUT HACKING VOTING MACHINES ON THE PHONE!? Y’all are smart enough to know how to hack a voting machine but not smart enough to think of burner phones?
And why hasn’t Polly already found this malware?
And why do I care?
Rachelle calls Liz “Diane” over the phone. Liz is making Diane’s arguments, but I think it’s telling Rachelle sees them as almost interchangeable obstacles. She doesn’t really care if she’s talking to Diane and Liz, as long as she’s talking to a lawyer who will get her the software architecture and argue her case.
I do not understand Jay’s testimony in court. One, why is Jay testifying instead of a computer science expert? Two, why do his political leanings matter if he could point at an actual section of code?
So this plotline can receive more consistent development than Lucca Quinn herself, Lucca offers to let Gary Carr shadow her.
This episode is a exhausting. I didn’t like it the first time and I am having trouble getting through it. Every supporting character who shows up makes me think, “ugh.”
Oh! This is the scene with the random unnecessary nudity! If she was going to be topless in this scene why even bother with having her cover up after sex? Either don’t show it or go all in. Now I’m nitpicking a thing that usually doesn’t annoy me.
Oh and THIS scene, with Adrian and Diane’s terribly thought through confrontation of the judge! You don’t have to be a genius to know this was the wrong approach. Diane doesn’t even know Adrian’s reasoning for believing there’s judicial bribery.
How many damn times can we do this, “these are REAL LAWYERS, not TV LAWYERS” bit? I’m sick of it. Also, Lucca doesn’t like TV? Boo.
Diane and Liz don’t win their case. Which is a win for Rachelle.
Now Diane’s ALL IN!!!!! On vote rigging and wants to push the button to make it happen. Whatever.
Well, that’s over. I really have three more of these to write?

Is Summer Over Yet?
Happy August!! It’s been a couple of months since I last posted on here. I finished my ZooMobile traveling season in May, and I sort of lost touch with taking photos and posting them. Once the season starts again in another month, I’ll do my best to keep recording my Arizona adventures.
In the mean time, is the summer over yet? It’s my first summer in Arizona, and I’ve had several people ask how I’m doing. When I moved here, I was assured that it wouldn’t be too bad because it’s a dry heat. While humidity does indeed suck, dry heat just makes it feel like I’m currently living in an oven. I’m originally from South Texas, so I’ve experienced living in heat before, but that was years ago and not quite the same as living in the desert.
To cope with the heat, I spend as little time outside as possible. It’s hard because I do enjoy being outside, but the inevitable sweat and thirst that comes with it is enough to keep me in the AC. When I visited my family in Wisconsin a couple of months ago, my mom was surprised at how tan I wasn’t. And I got my first sunburn of the year in the north. It’s just too hot for me to be outside here for long periods of time. When I am outside, I try to go swimming or play in sprinklers. I’ve also wet me hair in the splash pads that can be found at outdoor shopping centers here. Every restaurant that has seating outside also has misters that are important but so new to me. Drinking water is also provided abundantly in many places around Phoenix. It’s definitely appreciated.
Aside from dealing with the weather, I’ve been making Phoenix my home, and I feel like I’ve been doing an awesome job. It’s been almost a year since I moved out here where I knew only one person, and I’ve since created a wonderfully supportive and caring group of friends, both in and out of the workplace. As an adult, making friends outside of work can be difficult. I’m lucky enough to have amazing people in my department, and I can hangout with them when we aren’t working. I’ve also gotten to know some awesome people through my aerial adventures, both at the Vertical Fix studio and online. One of my closest friends right now is someone I actually met through Instagram. Creating a place where you feel comfortable and safe, a place you can call home, is not easy. But I’ve done a pretty damn good job. I still have my off days, but it’s getting better. I’ve even started dating again, and the guy I’ve been seeing is so sweet, and he makes me feel like I can be myself. So far, the second half of 2019 is looking great.

Good Trouble 1x04 “Playing the Game” Review
Don’t you hate it when your boss invites you to his house to play 20 Questions: Legal Edition and ends the party early when you stump him? No? Callie, Ben and Rebecca sure do.
Episode 4 picks up with Judge Wilson’s clerks sitting at a bar, visibly unamused after what seems to have been a long day. As flashbacks show us, they went to the judge’s house for an afternoon BBQ and played an intense game of 20 Questions, attempting to guess the names of legal cases and people involved in notorious legal matters.
While there, Callie discovers that Wilson is lying about his son studying abroad for the semester. In actuality, he’s on house arrest and isn’t allowed out of his room when there’s company present.
Meanwhile, Mariana reaches a boiling point at work when she’s asked to speak highly of the company in a recorded interview in which only the employees of color are being included. She knows that this doesn’t represent the company at all, as it’s mostly made up of white men, and decides she has to say something during her interview.
Coworkers Casey and Raj warn her that speaking out won’t help improve the company’s diversity and may end up getting her fired. Ultimately, Mariana listens to them and lies about loving her workplace and its culture.
Alice also struggles with the decision to speak her mind or please everyone when several issues in the apartment are left to her to take care of. This comes just after she helps ex-girlfriend Sumi and her new fiance begin to plan their wedding, despite the fact that she’s still in love with her.
Malika helps Alice to realize her worth and stand up for herself, reminding her that when she moved in, Alice had given her three months to get a job and begin paying for her share of the rent. Though it’s difficult for her, Alice holds a meeting in the Coterie and announces she will no longer be buying toilet paper for everyone in the loft. To her surprise, no one seems to care much.
All the while, Davia is considering leaving the loft. Her friend with benefits whom she hopes will become something more lives in Wisconsin, and she considers moving back to be closer to her family as well as him. However, he’s married, and though Davia believes he and his wife aren’t in love, he encourages Davia to stay in Los Angeles and continue teaching at the school she doesn’t love before catching a flight back home.
While one relationship seems to be falling apart, another could be blossoming. Mariana invites Raj out for a drink, just them without their annoying coworkers. When he arrives at the bar, he realizes that Mariana invited some of her friends along. He sits down anyway, but when Mariana mentions finding a stranger across the way attractive, he seems more than a bit jealous. Could this turn into something more than just a crush?
Callie also seems to have an admirer in Ben who walks her home from the bar and asks to come up for a drink, but when she refuses and he leaves, he sees Malika walking into the apartment right behind Callie. Ben is clearly suspicious about how Malika and Callie know each other and if there could be meddling in the Jamal Thompson case. This could prove difficult for Callie going forward as the clerk in the case.
This episode focused a lot more heavily on other characters in the loft besides Callie and Mariana, which was much needed. Prior to Episode 4, Davia and Alice have been floating in and out of storylines, not providing much except for a few one-liners here and there.
Here though, we really got to know the two women and what drives them. Alice is too nice for her own good, but as Malika reminds her, she hasn't always been that way. This has laid down a foundation for Alice to grow and change in front of the viewers’ very eyes.
Davia, on the other hand, has been a pretty closed book up until now. We now know that she has been in a relationship with a married man, and that this man provides her with a lot of her confidence. This isn’t abnormal. I mean, being in love is great. But I’d really love to see this relationship end, and for Davia to learn how to love herself instead of needing the affection of others to prop her up. She puts on a confident facade, but as we’ve seen in the past from the way she reacted to trolls on her Instagram page fat-shaming her, she isn’t as strong as she pretends to be.
This is what makes Davia such a great character though. Even though she seems to have it all — good looks, a career, a substantial social media following, friends who love her — she still has her downfalls. This is exactly why she is easy to relate to and so fun to watch. I’m excited to witness Davia’s journey to becoming a more confident and happy person.
On a different note, I continue to love and appreciate Good Trouble’s nods to social justice issues that are relevant right now. The discussion about sports players kneeling during the national anthem, and conservative Judge Wilson’s agreeance with Callie’s liberal perspective was definitely a highlight of the episode.
Similarly, the inclusion of statistics about the racial and gendered makeup of tech companies was so important. I was shocked to hear that only 15% of engineers are women. Again though, Good Trouble is shining a light on these issues and making sure that those who don’t know, learn.
I’m definitely hoping for more Raj and Mariana in future episodes. Though she hasn’t expressed interest in him, this could be the perfect slowburn. Admittedly, I was hoping they’d hook up this episode, but it would be nice to see them form a real friendship first before becoming anything more. After all, Mariana really needs a friend.
Gael was absent from this episode, which leaves me wondering if he and Callie will ever end up being more than just loft mates who occasionally have sex. I wouldn’t have much of an issue with that, seeing as he rubbed me the wrong way leading on Callie while having someone else in his back pocket.
Maybe it’s best for Callie not to worry about relationships, at least for a while, because this case is about to get a lot more interesting now that Ben knows Malika is her roommate. I, for one, can’t wait to see how this turns out.
