As I was shuffling I was focusing on the imagery of your oracle card. I strongly got the feeling of being kind of put on the spot. You are having to make quick decisions. This one feels pretty damn straightforward haha, you guys are here to build literally any life that you want to. I am looking and these cards as a progression - the man in the four of pentacles seizes the ace of wands and becomes the magician. Literally he lets go of these four measly pentacles, grabs the magic wand, and become the magician he was always meant to become.

You guys have sooooo much power within you. Your manifesting skills are truly off the chart and it seems like right now you're not really sure what to do with this gift. I think you could be feeling overwhelmed by all the possibilities. You are probably the kind of person who has a lot of different interests, can feign commonality with just about anyone because you're smart and absorb knowledge like a sponge - so you have tidbits of information on a huge range of topics. That’s all in the past now. You’ve let all of that silly mindset become part of a dying paradigm. You ain’t playin’ like dat no mo. And those who can’t understand your level of chill can also die in that old paradigm. You aren’t the least bit concerned about what’s ‘normal’ anymore. From here, your Life is magick! And those who can understand you, will only find you inspirational, if not aspirational😉

So there’s a sense of having ‘worked so hard’, but you understand that this is mainly your having worked so hard on shifting your internal paradigm. You held on for dear Life! how do you connect to your character? like how do get to know them so well? how do you pick out their likes, dislikes, habits and those itty bitty bits about them? I've been struggling to do that for sooo many of my ocs, and i'm also at a lost of how to design them. like i once had a clear idea of what kind of character they are, but i wanted to change them a bit, make them a little better, and i feel like I've lost that character and that character i'm working on doesn't exists, no matter how much i loved them and enjoyed writing an drawing them. this has happened with every single character i made and it just makes me think that i may not be cut out for drawing or writing characters. i look up to you so i thought of asking you for help

HELLO HELLO THANK YOU FOR ASKING!! So basically I took this question and turned it into a 1.6k word essay on writing characters and how I like to do it, so, uh, hope you enjoy!! and hope it helps!

OK!! character writing. How do you do it? or, well, how do I do it. I’ve got a few methods that help me out the most and are the most fun for me to think about. Here’s my big secret, if it’s not fun I don’t do it. I’m not here to do homework I’m waaayyyy out of school. I’m a legal adult. I pay my taxes. I’m not gonna do something that doesn’t give my brain the good fun juice. Anyways. My methods are: symbols, archetypes, and character inspiration. I use all these to figure out the CORE of a character, their very beating heart, and most importantly, what haunts them. Everything about a character, in my opinion, comes from this core and their ghost. Their habits, their fears, their joys, their coping mechanisms. So long as you have a clear grasp on their heart, you won’t go astray. Let’s dive into it! The characters I’m going to be using to describe how I use these methods are Alice and others characters from my webcomic—namely Edith, Hatter, and Rougina—and Tomiko (you know her you love her, catgirl supreme).

Symbols! I love using symbols, they’re something that can describe a character through metaphor, even without going into detail about their whole backstory and habits. Tomiko’s symbols are lanterns (specifically light), cats, ghosts/yokai, shapeshifting, and gold. They all work to further her character as a rough around the edges monster cat with a heart of gold, who uses shapeshifting as a method (both literally and metaphorically) to mold herself into what others need her to be. Alice’s symbols are hearts, eyes, and flesh in general. Try picking one general symbol (the ocean, the forest, the city), and see how specific you can get from there. Or pick a god or goddess that resonates with your character and see what symbols are used for them. Rougina (the antagonist in my webcomic) is a war goddess fallen from grace, and is symbolized with land and volcanoes, so I’ve used volcanic plants to evoke her. Personally I also love going through the tarot for symbols, assigning a tarot card to characters (of the major arcana) is a fun exercise. Which leads us nicely into our next method:

Archetypes! The tarot deck’s Major Arcana is pretty much only archetypes. The Empress as the Mother. The Magician as the Wise Mentor. The Tower as The Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen Oh Jesus Shit. These can help a lot with who your character is. I’m extremely storytelling oriented, so it helps me knowing What Role a character serves in the story they inhabit. Another thing I love in archetypes in the Zodiac. Yes, I am an astrology bitch. The whole reason I love talking about my methods is my Sag rising, I love giving my wisdoms. But astrology can be used for writing, and not just for excusing and not reflecting on shit behavior (can’t help being a gemini!). The zodiac is FILLED WITH ARCHETYPES!!! From elements to how they function! The four elements (you A:TLA bitches know this), and three modalities. If you’re interested please watch Eugene’s Rank King video, it’s very informative on the signs. Also many symbols! For example, Alice is a Taurus—May 4, Alice Liddell’s birthday—so she’s pretty stubborn while also loving creature comforts. Tomiko’s birthday is August 23, making her a Virgo, so she likes being precise in her work. More archetypes you can look for are DnD classes! I love using that to design costumes. One of Edith’s recent costumes is very wizard inspired, since that’s the class I see her having as she’s very studious and driven. Heck, all of Alice and the Nightmare is derived from the character archetypes of the Alice in Wonderland characters! Rougina is specifically the Red Queen, NOT the Queen of Hearts!! The confusion started with the 1951 Disney animated movie when the two characters were merged!! Lewis Carroll himself said the two were different! The Queen of Hearts is an “embodiment of ungovernable passion” and the Red Queen is “the concentrated essence of all governesses”!! GOD!!! Tim Burton meet me in the fucking pit you’ll pay for your alice crimes. anyways.

Archetypes help a lot in costumes too, figuring out what kind of fashion they’d like to wear. You can start broad and get more specific with it (like going from a wizard type character to a wizard character with steampunk themes). Fashion is just an extent of character. What are they comfy in? Are they confident in their body? What colors do they like? Bright high fashion or simple dark sweaters? Ryoko Kui is a master of character design I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend checking out her work.

Another method I like using, specifically for Alice and the Nightmare characters, is what I call the “three trait method”. When I was in middle school we did a production of Alice in Wonderland (I was the White Knight), and too many girls auditioned for Alice. So the director’s solution was to split the character into three parts, and assigning each part to an actor. Her temper, her intelligence, and her innocence, all used in different scenes. Now I use that to think about my own Alice character, except with “polite, temper, and curious”. Edith’s keywords are “nervous, tactical, and intelligent”. Hatter’s are “kind, enthusiastic, and intuitive”. Using keywords can help figure out how they’d react in a situation, what side of them would shine the brightest. Hatter’s want to help everyone is his kindness, but overstepping his bounds can be attributed to his enthusiasm. Edith can know what path to take in a pinch, but her nervousness can freeze her in place. Reading the source material helps a lot with Alice characters too, which brings us to our final point:

Character inspiration!! The art of taking things you like and shoving them into your own characters and stories. DISCLAIMER THO!!! If you take things without really EXAMINING what about them you like, WHY you like them, and how you’d like to evoke that same love in the things you make, the interpretations can come off as shallow. (for more on this subject, watch HBomberguy’s RWBY video essay, specifically the section on “anime homework”)

Tomiko’s biggest inspirations are Izutsumi from Dungeon Meshi, April Ludgate from Parks and Rec, Power and Reze from Chainsawman, San from Princess Mononoke, and Mei from LMK. It’s a good cocktail of aloof, biting, vicious, weird, fierce, loving, and bright. Figuring out what I love about the characters and what I want to write in a character like that helps a lot in writing Tomiko. It’s also really fun in a sense for screenshot redraws and memes.

Music is also a HUUUUUUGE source of inspiration for me, I love making playlists. And even as playlists can change as characters grow and change, having a couple of core songs still helps me ground to that character’s center. For Tomiko it’s “Make Them Gold” by CHVRCHES, and “Nice Girl” by Ashnikko. Alice’s is “Headlock” by Imogen Heap and “Demons” by Hayley Kiyoko, Edith’s is “Warrior” by Kimbra, and Hatter’s is “Dementia” by Owl City.

Ok, we’ve gotten though symbols, archetypes, and made a couple of banger playlists. Next is something that can help write your character, the Big Lie. The thing that keeps them up at night. Their biggest fear, their ghost, what haunts them. What’s holding them back from their goals? What do they need to overcome? That can be as central to their theme as any symbolism. For Tomiko it’s the lie that her emotions don’t matter, only what she can do to be of service to her mother. Her arc is about overcoming her dismissing her own emotions and learning to not run away from the people who she truly cares for. Alice dismisses the literal ghost that is haunting her believing that that will let her have a normal life. Edith pushes down abilities that come naturally to her for fear that she’ll be exiled, not just from society, but the world. Rougina believes she must burden the world’s problems on her own shoulders with no one’s help. The outer character and the inner ghost can reflect, mirror, and inform each other.

Now, listen, sometimes characters are hard to get to know! Tomiko was lol. Quinn was for a looong time. And in times like this, I just, let them be. I listen to some music to get inspired, and let them tell me about themselves when they feel like it. And they will, it just take a little while. And a few dozen quick exploration drawings. But they come through. Also, try not to get bogged down with habits and little details of their character, keep their core in mind, what their heart is. Start broad and get specific. That way, if you feel like you’ve lost your way or the character feels different to you, recenter yourself at their heart and go from there. Or, if you find that their center no longer fits, don’t be afraid to change it! Characters are meant to be fun! First and foremost!! I make characters cause I like writing and storytelling, and drawing little comic for fun and me time. Sometimes characters stick around, sometimes they fall by the wayside. You really have to find what sparks joy, and chase your bliss!

So as long as you have your character’s essence in your hands, and you WANT to keep working on them and drawing them, there’s really no wrong way to go. This whole essay I’ve given is just a set of tools that works for ME, and I HIGHLY encourage you to find stuff that works for you! Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot Deck

The Thoth Tarot deck, created by the enigmatic occultist Aleister Crowley and artist Lady Frieda Harris, is a masterpiece of esoteric symbolism and artistic expression. Its history is intertwined with the mystical and magical traditions of the early 20th century.

Black Pools

This was inspired by the music and video of Black Pools by Call Me Sleeper, and the Star Arcanum of the Marseille and the Thoth Tarot decks. I've been wanting to do a portrait of him that brings out his innermost nature, and this is how it ended up as the implosion (or shadow, if you will) of the "classic" Star Arcanum. The idea comes largely from the Weird Studies podcast's episode on the Star Arcanum, as they discussed how the implosion of a real star that becomes a black hole is a great symbolic representation of those people who seem like they can never be satisfied with love and/or attention, as well as I think, the event horizon with the spiralling matter, the spiral pattern itself is a good symbolic representation of obsession, something that Xander particularly excels at, in connection to his lover, Saint Arina. He's dedicated himself fully to protecting her, overprotecting even, he has a certain amount of jealousy and possessiveness, too, along with a lot of passion, and fire.

Fire has been a core element of his character, and that's why I've included the alchemical and astrological symbols on the uppermost ring that correspond to sulphur, fire, and the Sun on one side, and on the other the Fire signs of the Zodiac and their ruling planets (the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius, and Mars for Aries). As his lover is represented by the healing waters and the Moon, he himself is represented by fire and the Sun, his lover as the Hierophant (V) and himself as the Tower (XVI), making one of the pairs of the Marseille Tarot that sum up to 21 if you add up their numerals: such pairs, according to Jodorowsky and Costa, signify Paths of Realisations, each pair giving a "World" (XXI) Arcanum as they form a certain wholeness when they meet.

Xander's tattoo of XVI on the side of his head is as much a reminder to him of his former Legion, the Sons of Horus, as a reminder it is to me of the Tower Arcanum of the Tarot, the one that I've been most connected to in my Marseille deck ever since I first took its Arcana in my hands. The Tower in the Marseille deck corresponds to change, upheaval, "the emergence of what was imprisoned", liberation, breaking boundaries, and revelation (and more). The Tower can be the Sacred Body which is calling out to the Divine. And the Tower, as discussed in Meditations on the Tarot and the corresponding Weird Studies episode, can also stand for the act of building as opposed to gardening, wherein the act of gardening signifies a cocreation with the "other player", where you trust the other: you provide all you can that is necessary to cultivate a garden, but you yourself don't do the growing of the plants. In a similar way, the act building signifies that when you don't trust the "other player" enough so that you end up accounting for every single detail in your work, that may end up in a rather unhealthy way of living - and the symbolic towers you build that way, the masks, they are eventually going to crack. Xander has witnessed a lot of downfalls, a lot of crumblings of masks, as well as how the Universe so far has been really holding him in its palms, and after all the wars he had to partake in, he was given a chance to craft his life the way he wanted to, and a chance to live with his lover and provide a safe haven for her and a happy life, so that she may help countless others find peace and hope through her soul-soothing and healing abilities. He remembers the hardships, and he keeps fighting for her. He counts his blessings, he's learnt a lot by watching those around him as well as in practice and on the battlefields, and he's watching out for opportunities to advance, to forge his own path.

My Tarot Card Collection

I am not an expert tarot card reader, however I've been gifted many throughout my life. Below is how I approach my cards and a big-pictured view on how Tarot is linked to astrology.

Tarot the Complete Kit - This was my first tarot card deck that I learned with. I use it for experimenting and as a reference.

Disney Villains - This deck I use for different perspectives or for when I do an unusual type of reading. Alice in Wonderland- The only tarot card deck I bought myself (before I was told that's somewhat taboo), I use it mostly for creativity and inspirational purposes.

Tarot of the Divine, Inspired by Deities, Folklore, and Fairy Tales from Around the World- This is my favorite deck and the one I have the strongest "connection" with. I use it for guidance, reflection, and intuition exercises.

Co-Star is a Western astrology app. It is entirely free except for if you would like to “ask the void” a question. You have to buy questions for that.

You enter your birth date and time and it calculates your birth chart and gives you daily updates. You can click on each update to see the astrological explanation behind it.

There is also a friends and partner function but I have never used it haha

Most people already know about Discord. It is typically used as a messaging and video call app. But I like to use it for my prayer journal.

I made a private server with nobody in it and made a separate channel for each deity’s prayer journal. It works very nicely and I can access it on any device that can use Discord.

There is also a witchcraft Discord bot called Cabot, which includes tarot, 8-ball, coin flips, moon phases, and other features. It is entirely free :)

Freeform is an app built in to iOS devices. It’s an infinite canvas app where you can insert text, drawings, pictures, and stickers.

I use Pinterest for inspiration for my craft, but also to find photos for my digital altars. There is a large witchcraft and pagan community on Pinterest. I think it’s worth checking out.

changkyun could be interested in someone spiritual, as the magician is represented as someone who is a great manifestor and someone resourceful. the combination of 2 of swords rx and the magician reminds me of someone who is a go-getter and focused on achieving success in their career, sort of like someone who has tunnel vision and has lots of dreams and willingness to achieve it. even though changkyun seems to innately like being the provider, i still feel someone who has accomplishments is a turn-on for him. 2 of swords rx can also paint someone who is decisive and ruthless in a way, like someone who people fear due to a quiet strength. they might not be the most boisterous person in the room, but their aura garners respect from people. the ace of wands rx reminds me of someone private with their ideas, someone that can be scattered in a way when it comes to their thought processes, but has large ideas, i also heard the word humanitarian come to mind. the 9 of pentacles rx on the bottom describes someone who hustles and has a strong sense of self-worth. i also envision someone who has built their career themselves, and doesn't rely on anyone for their successes. i feel this person is someone who takes their career seriously, and puts their head down when they are working so they don't attract unwanted attention.

changkyun might be interested in those who can ground him more in reality, as his placements give off someone who is more cerebral/dreamy. changkyun could find someone who is very goal-oriented attractive as the earth card focuses on material possessions. the other words such as patience and practicality are traits that i feel changkyun finds also looks for, so overall someone who has a lot of willpower, is pragmatic and disciplined with multiple areas in their lives. the mouse card illustrates someone detail-oriented, organised and nit-picky. changkyun could want someone who is a bit of a control freak and loves organising their lives, the type of people who have 5-10 year plans or is always one step ahead. the way i interpret it is that it makes sense why changkyun wants someone who has a bit of nervous energy, as he will teach them to be more open and adaptable. his ideal type could be someone who frees themselves and others from outdated beliefs, while also releasing negative thought patterns. this person is seen as a leader and a trailblazer, and i think changkyun finds those qualities very attractive. i feel changkyun would like his s.o. to be his source of motivation and inspiration, not only for himself but for others as well.

AS A BOYFRIEND

the hermit, justice rx, strength, 8 of cups rx | the sun: self-expression and embody truth | spider | knight

the first thing that came to mind when i was shuffling the cards was that changkyun could be someone who's very private with his love life, for example, he prefers just being with his person in privacy instead of going out and meeting with others etc. he comes off as a homebody boyfriend to me, or even just preferring dates that are more remote. the hermit embodies patience and guidance which i feel is what changkyun would be like as a boyfriend, someone who is patient and loves teaching/guiding his person. the justice rx tells me that changkyun has a tendency to struggle with boundaries and can come off as "overgiving" or something of that nature. strength tells me that changkyun is happy to bear the burden of his s.o. and not tell anyone. 8 of cups rx indicates that changkyun can be someone who won't give up on the relationship even if it isn't working. he will do everything in his power to make the relationship work (his pisces venus:')). i think overall, changkyun can be said as someone who is extremely selfless, private, emotionally strong and someone who struggles with leaving, even though it is necessary.

the sun tells me that changkyun will make the relationship the centre of his world. changkyun will become livelier and more energised in the relationship and even act childlike at times. changkyun will be someone who is more self-assured in the relationship. the spider card denotes someone who's an ingenious creator who is able to support the spider and those around them financially and spiritually. this can indicate that changkyun loves being the provider in relationships and actually likes being relied on as it's innate within him and gives him a sense of purpose. this could be tied to his pisces venus as this placement often indicates selflessness and service. this card also tells me that changkyun often bears the burden for others and doesn't like to show others his vulnerability. in a relationship though, i see him as someone enthusiastic, playful and even creative. i wouldn't be surprised if he is constantly making music for or inspired by his significant other.

the knight card represents loyalty, romance and chivalry and a love of honour. changkyun could be the type to be take pride in being the gentleman. even though his aquarius placements make him more unconventional in love, his capricorn mercury and aries moon makes him still place an importance on tradition and perpetuating certain gender roles. even though I feel changkyun is more liberal in that aspect and does not 100% subscribe to traditional gender roles, there is this innate feeling of need regarding him being the provider. i can also see him defending his relationship from others (if there is any criticism) and holding his relationship to the utmost importance. with his pieces venus, I do feel that he tends to go for partners that he can "fix" so he might feel obligated to be his person's knight in shining armour.

General Body, Mind, Spirit reading for [Sample]

For this read, I shuffle the Silhouettes deck, then search for each of the signifier cards, Body, Mind, and Spirit, which are unique to this deck. I read the cards above and below each signifier, as well as the “top” and “bottom” deck of the remaining cards. I read the signifiers relative locations to each other, as well as their spacing throughout the whole deck.

Deck Overview

The first signifier card, Mind, came fairly early into the deck, with Spirit and Body coming at fairly even intervals thereafter. This speaks to an open and balanced character. This deck has some interesting extras, and I felt inspired to utilize those as well. It contains two variant Strength cards, as since VIII Strength was the first face up card in your draw, I searched for the XI Strength as well to round out this reading. So your five points of interest for this reading are:

The top deck of this read is the outward facing, the top level of your person, what you show to the world. It can be likened to the rising sign of natal astrology. This is what you are projecting out, the parts of your personality you use to navigate interpersonal relationships and outward interactions.

Strength VIII

This Strength Variant is what I’ve always called Strength Realized, a mature and developed partnership with yourself. It symbolizes someone who is in touch with their inner well, who knows what lies within their core.

For the top deck, I read the first two cards down and how they reflect back on the topmost card. For this read, Strength VIII is informed by  the Queen of Swords (inverted) and the Three of Wands (inverted).

Queen of Swords (inverted)

The Queen of Swords is known for her sharp tongue, words used with scalpel-like precision to achieve exactly the effect she desires. Upright, she is often perceived as too harsh, cutting, uncaring of how the truth might hurt. Inverted, I read her as more poised, able to use her expert command of words to speak hard truths in strong but nurturing ways. She pulls no punches, but she couches her deliveries in ways that leave the recipient more receptive to actually hearing her message.

Three of Wands (inverted)

The Three of Wands is often called the Leap of Faith, walking blindly but trustingly into the unknown, building on those that have come before you. In this reading, inverted, I read it more as looking inward, trusting the work you’ve done on and with yourself. You may not always know what tomorrow will hold, but you have faith in the systems you have in place to navigate the storms and sun alike.

Synthesis

The Queen and the Three inform Strength VIII as facets of how your inner strength serves you. You are able to trust yourself to speak from a place of kind authority, and know that your inner strength will back you. You project someone who can be trusted, who is knowledgeable, and who stands as an example as one who has gone through it. No matter how you might feel internally, external you project calm confidence, and it serves you well.

Mind

Your thoughts, perceptions, and mental health. These are the voices in your head, the logic that gathers evidence and presents neat, tidy facts. These are the cards that reflect your self talk, your coping systems, and the parts of you that inform your conscious thought.

This card coming first of the three indicates that it’s often the first tool you reach for. Making lists, gathering your thoughts, using your words: these are your preferred ways to handle things. You like to have things in order, sorted and categorized. Whether you’re successful in this is another matter all together, but it’s your first go-to. You tend to tackle the mental aspect of a problem or goal first and sort out feelings and physical needs later.
