The Parallels Between Astrid and Lydia and What They Say About Beetlebabes: A Metaphorical Interpretation of the Final Dream Sequence
I previously made a post where I wrote about my interpretation of the dream sequence being inspired by Lydia and Astrid’s literal futures following the film, but after reading @theblacklistforever97 ‘s metaphorical interpretation of the final scene, I wanted to explore what messages Burton may be trying to convey. I think that we can find a strong message when we look at how Astrid’s time in the film parallels her mother’s experiences as a teenager.
The main takeaway from the linked post is that dream sequences often reveal the inner desires of characters, but I think that the parallels between mother and daughter can, too.
As teenagers, both characters are strange and unusual in their own rights. Lydia is iconically goth and melancholy with fascinations with death and photography, while Astrid reads classic Russian literature and wears edgy clothing. Both are shown to not fit in with people that are considered “normal.” Yet they want to feel embraced and have someone truly see them.
Lydia’s family writes her off as weird, and when she starts to bond with the Maitlands, they vanish for three months. She feels used after the incident at dinner.
As soon as Beetlejuice looks at her, he’s interested. His full attention is on her. He says she looked like someone he can relate to, and when Lydia basically says she wants to die, he’s genuinely taken aback. He doesn’t have to offer to talk about that with her, but he does. Beetlejuice genuinely values Lydia’s life, and he wants her to live it. There’s also no mention of marriage during that first encounter. He just wants Lydia to let him out—no mentions of being out permanently either.
But in their next encounter, Beetlejuice wants out for good, and he chooses Lydia to be tethered to in marriage. He’s downright gleeful when she talks to him again. It’s entirely possible that Beetlejuice only wanted to be out permanently after he met Lydia, and he’s enamored with her. We know now that he’s gone 600 years without romantic love, and that reframes his eagerness to marry her. He’s been carrying that ring around for hundreds of years, and he finally found someone he thinks is worthy of having it.
People could argue that Beetlejuice was using Lydia and had no real romantic interest in her, but after the sequel, there’s no denying that he has sincere feelings for Lydia. I detail a lot of his and Lydia’s moments in a separate post, but TLDR: Beetlejuice calls Lydia the love of his life and waits for her. He absolutely adores this woman, and he just wants to be with her.
Astrid’s relationship with Jeremy serves as a foil to Lydia and Beetlejuice’s. Jeremy feigns interest in Astrid to manipulate her into trusting him. He values her life only in the sense that he wants to take it for himself. He appeals to her desire for someone to understand her, but it’s not genuine. He lies about the incantation and uses Astrid’s desire for closure regarding her father to get what he wants. He had no intentions of being with Astrid; just using her for his own gain.
There’s only one man who behaves similarly to Jeremy in the film, and it’s not Beetlejuice—it’s Rory. While Jeremy wants to literally take control of Astrid’s life, Rory figuratively controls Lydia’s. He guilts her, he manipulates her, and Lydia has lost a lot of the spunk and fire she had as a teenager. Rory appeals to her emotions just like Jeremy does with Astrid so he can reach his own goals. He doesn’t believe in Lydia, doesn’t listen to her. It’s all an act to get to her money, just like Jeremy pretends to be the caring living boy to get Astrid to sign her life away.
If we look at the dream sequence metaphorically, the parallels between Astrid and Lydia make a solid case that Astrid is meant to reflect Lydia’s inner desires. Dream Astrid meets someone that matches her eccentric energy, who truly sees her, and they get to live happily ever after. Let’s also note that the boy is wearing a vampire costume, a monster that’s known for invoking fear, yet that’s the moment that captivates Dream Astrid. And even when a monstrous BabyJuice pops out of her, she smiles and accepts him as her own.
Beetlejuice sends a clear message here: if Lydia wants to feel fully seen and appreciated, she needs to find someone that matches her energy. He wants to be that someone, and he’s proven that his affections are far more genuine than Rory’s. He’s already accepted her, but she needs to accept him, too. He truly believes that if she can accept the connection they have, he will make her happy.

God help us – for art is long and life is short! (Faust: First Part, written by Johann Wolfgang Goethe and published in 1808)
hiiii heres the first part of what will (hopefully!!!) be a series of western women's fashion from 1800 to today. obviously, not all women looked like this or dressed like this. in fact, most didn't - these are largely going to be looks worn by women of a higher socioeconomic class, at least until maybe the 1880s. this is for a few reasons, mostly being, uh... availability of cc. i'd love to MAKE some historical cc but my laptop won't run blender. another reason is that the fashion of the upper classes is typically better recorded than that of lower classes, especially before the advent and popularization of photography. i'm just rambling now.
anyway! the first part: 1800-1809. we see the opulence of the georgians cling onto fashion in bows, feathers, and jewels. we also see the rise of waistlines to the iconic empire waist, and the influences of neoclassical aesthetics in fashion. hairstyles in particular were emulating those of the ancient greeks, also pulling a bit from the stuarts. this decade also allows me to share one of my favorite tidbits of fashion history: the coiffure à la titus! for a short time in the 1790s through the 1810s, some women (french women especially) took to cutting their hair short and choppy. the reasons range from inspiration taken from a popular play at the time, to symbolizing solidarity with women executed via guillotine. some men at the time thought that having short hair was actually hazardous to women's health, so while the titus cut wasn't the norm, it was widespread enough to cause quite a storm!
you'll notice that 1806 is missing. that's because the dress i used, uh... completely messed up the arms and i did not notice until i was making the gif. if you wanna see it, it'll be under the cut.

So . . . I was sent these.
A couple of you know I used to have a Beetlejuice x Lydia blog. Used to be into the fandom big time, since the movie first opened in 1988. Then, for reasons I won't get into, I lost interest in all things Beej.
But some people still read my Beej fics on AO3. And one of them sent me these photos from Beetlejuice 2. They also sent me the link to the article they appeared in.
So for you few Beetlebabes who still Follow me -- you know who you are -- here's the article.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”... Beetlejuice returns in first look at Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder
Nick Romano
Wed, March 20, 2024 at 9:00 AM CDT
It's been 36 years, but once again, the juice is loose.
After reprising Batman in last year's The Flash, Michael Keaton returns to another iconic role in Entertainment Weekly's exclusive first look at Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to director Tim Burton's cult hit.
Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara also reprise their roles as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively, while Burton's Wednesday star Jenna Ortega plays Lydia's daughter Astrid, and The Leftovers star Justin Theroux plays Rory. Further details on Rory remain under wraps for now — unlike the titular "bio-exorcist."
The original Beetlejuice (1988) followed the recently deceased Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin), who enlist the aid of the mischievous demon Beetlejuice/Betelgeuse (Keaton), to expel the current living residents of their home, the Deetz family. All hell, subsequently, breaks loose.
The sequel picks up decades later with a death in the family. "That's all I will say," Burton tells EW in an interview. "There's something that happens that sets things in motion." Could that be the death of Lydia's father, Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones)? The director plays coy: "We'll see." One thing's for sure, Beetlejuice comes back into play.
Burton describes getting Keaton back in the classic costume and makeup as "a weird out-of-body experience."
"He just got back into it," the filmmaker behind 1989's Batman (also starring Keaton) and 1993's The Nightmare Before Christmas recalls. "It was kind of scary for somebody who was maybe not that overly interested in doing it. It was such a beautiful thing for me to see all the cast, but he, sort of like demon possession, just went right back into it."
Burton says he and Keaton have talked about a sequel on and off over the years. "Unless it felt right, he had no burning desire to do it," the director recalls. "I think we all felt the same way. It only made sense if it had an emotional hook."
Many concepts were floated around, some dating all the way back to the '80s, including a treatment set in Hawaii. "We talked about lots of different things," Burton says. "That was early on when we were going, Beetlejuice and the Haunted Mansion, Beetlejuice Goes West, whatever. Lots of things came up."
What they needed, however, was time. His actors, including Ryder and O'Hara, had all moved on to other projects after the original came out, and "nobody," Burton notes, "was really pushing for it." The filmmaker also admits he didn't initially (and still doesn't to some degree) understand the success of the first film, so he wasn't motivated to move forward with an idea that didn't excite him.
The hook he was looking for, as it turns out, revolves around Ryder's Lydia and bringing together three generations of Deetz women, including O'Hara's Delia and Ortega's Astrid. "I so identified with the Lydia character, but then you get to all these years later, and you take your own journey, going from cool teenager to lame adult, back and forth again," he explains. "That made it emotional, gave it a foundation. So that was the thing that really truly got me into it."
Other details on the film itself are being kept secret for now, other than the presence of Monica Bellucci (Spectre), Arthur Conti (House of the Dragon), and Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) among the cast. (Dafoe previously disclosed his role as a B-movie action star who died and became a police officer in the Afterlife.) Burton feels "a bit jinx-y" about revealing such things, given that he's still shaping the movie in the editing phase. But he does confirm he'll be using stop-motion animation to bring a lot of the classic Beetlejuice effects to the screen. "It needed a back-to-basics, handmade quality," he says. "It reenergized why I love making movies."
And what about that title? Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. "It's been, what? Thirty-five years. So it didn't feel like Beetlejuice 2 to me," Burton says. "It didn't feel like that kind of a movie. The other one I thought of, because one of my favorite Dracula movies is Dracula A.D. 1972, was Beetlejuice 2024 A.D. But this was a nice simple one."
Just don't say the name one more time, or you risk summoning the man himself.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hit theaters on Sept. 6.

Addendum: Was sent the link to this, too.
I'm . . . fearfully optimistic . . . .

The Mosley Review: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
I am truly overjoyed! It seems that more films are returning back to the magic of practical locations, effects and using CGI when it is absolutely necessary. When I see a master storyteller that started out that way, come back to their roots and show us why we loved them in the first place, my heart flutters as we are witnessing something truly special. That is what happened here and it was gorgeous return to the darkly comedic and macabre world created from the mind of Tim Burton. Burton returns to his most beloved film by fans and it didn't disappoint. Not only does it continue the same level reverence for the odd, but it also adds more to the lore by exploring more of the spirit realm and I loved every second of it. I loved that all of his tricks and styles were on display, especially during a discussion about the fate of a certain character. The way its done was a visual feast. This film was a bit overwhelming with the amount of characters, but I could never say I was bored. The amount of busy work each character gets could've been separated into their own vignettes, but it's all weaved together and wrapped up in a fun way. I do wish the threat for the titular character was more central and the driving force of the film though.
Winona Ryder returns as Lydia Deetz and I loved that she continued to embrace her supernatural gift. She is more tormented this time around and heartbroken as she had a loss that damaged her relationship with her daughter. Jenna Ortega was bratty, snarky and sometimes mean as Lydia's estranged daughter, Astrid. Their relationship was interesting to watch become patched in the most difficult way. She had the same attitude as Lydia when she was younger, but less morose and more angst. It worked all the way through and I loved when she finally starts to connect with her Mother on something they share. Catherine O'Hara was just as crazy, unpredictable and fun as Lydia's mom and Astrid's grandmother, Delia Deetz. Every moment with her was comedic gold and how darkly artistic it gets was great. Justin Theroux was good and slimy as Lydia's boyfriend, Rory. He was good for the purpose of where Lydia was in her life, but I almost felt he was the weakest part of the ensemble. Not in performance, but just as a supporting character that sometimes detracted from the pacing. Willem Dafoe was truly having fun as the dead action star, Wolf Jackson. I loved the throw back style of the 1950's detective he was portraying while hamming up the most hilarious and cheesy dialogue an old school detective would say. Arthur Conti was good as Astrid's first crush, Jeremy Frazier. It was a fun sliver of a possible teen romance in this weird world. Monica Bellucci still takes my breath away when she graces the screen and as the villainess, Delores LaVerge, she was truly spectacular. I loved the lore behind her relationship with Beetlejuice and I liked her creepy presence. I just wish we focused on her more as the driving force of the film instead of being lightly sprinkled around. Speaking of Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton returns as the ghost with the most and he hasn't skipped a beat. He continues to be that disgusting and loveable trickster we all love. He was hilarious, smart and very creative in his quest to get away from his ex-wife, Delores. I love that we finally get a confirmed backstory for the character and the amount of fun he has telling it was right on brand. The chemistry between him and Lydia never died and it was magical to see them together again.
Composer and Tim Burton's muse, Danny Elfman returns and brings back the iconic score and themes. I loved that he kept the gothic and whimsical tone of the film alive with his insanely playful score. The mixed soundtrack of jams that work in the playful nature of the spirit world was excellent and there is a prolonged musical sequence that was a bit bloated. Like I said before, everyone has something to do and that made the film more busy than it needed to be. For me, I would've gotten rid of Rory and left Lydia's heartbroken story as is anchor point for her and Astrid to reconnect. Even with all of its flaws, it still was a welcomed return to form for Tim Burton and fun excursion back into the world of Beetlejuice. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Little things I've noticed while watching Fionna and Cake episodes 9 and 10
(Potential spoilers and general ramblings)
• Shermy and Yumyulack share a VA :-D
• Betty was on the newspaper the squirrel ate in Fionna and Cake's world.
• Shermy Simon recieved guidance from Beth, the descendant of Jake the Dog, who is iconic for giving great advice.
• When hiding Casper and Nova's story, Betty knew exactly which book Shermy Simon was gonna grab at the library. I'd like to think she didn't have to rely on her omnipotence for that.
• GOLBetty is most DEFINITELY living in a non-linear timeline/doesn't abide to time at all. She uses concepts from the future to talk to Simon. She refers to her life with Simon as an "experience" as if it was just a moment in time
• Barely any Simon and Marcy :'-( Hopefully we get more of them if we get a season 2
• Simon turning away from Betty when he put on the crown. I may be overanalyzing the hell out of this but I SWEAR this must mean something about his guilt or his innermost intentions or SOMETHING
• The statue in Fionna and Cake world changing into GOLBetty (pretty obvious but it should be mentioned)
• The name GOLBetty becoming canon 😭
• Fionna and Cake finding magic in the world they already knew <3
• Little Destiny and Jay living in Fionna and Cake world doesn't cause issues? Is it because Jay is related to Finn? Idk maybe we'll see something about them if a season 2 comes out
• Simon gets therapy (real edition)
• SIMON LEARNING TO USE KAOMOJIS WHEN HE TEXTS FIONNA??? HOW CUTE HE'S SUCH A DAD
• Simon borrowed Astrid's motorcycle-thing in the finale montage. He was also showing her 90's stuff. Maybe they become friends
• ASTRID DRAWING CASPER AND NOVA IN HER SKETCHBOOK. THOSE ARE HER OCS. BETTY IS AN OC THIEF LMAOO
• Baby Finn and Peppermint Tank still being together hehehe
And now, something random I noticed while watching Adventure Time:
SEASON 1 MARCELINE AND WINTER KING HAVE THE EXACT SAME BOOTS!!! HIS ARE JUST BLUE!!!
IS THIS A STYLE THING OR WHAT?? IDK I JUST THINK ITS NEAT

Intro Post!
[Icon made using CIM by Dolldivine]
Hey all! Maeve here, thought I should introduce myself. :)
I'm 26, live in a small town in Hoenn, and often visit family in Alola. I'm the local 'Pokémon Wrangler,' which really just means I take care of any Pokémon in town that end up where they shouldn't. When not called on a job, I sell honey from my Combee hives and jams and berries from my orchard. Many Pokémon consider my property their home, and I don't discourage them from visiting so long as they remain friendly.
My team (or really, the Pokémon who hang around the house the most) is currently six Pokémon strong!
Astrid is my Garchomp and my partner Pokémon. She tends to be standoffish, but she's a sucker for poképuffs if you have them <3
Cassia is my Luxray, she's very protective of me and offers comfort when I'm upset. She's wonderful with kids though, and I take her with me whenever I'm invited to a school to talk about Pokémon safety.
Bryony, my Mudsdale, helps with my work in the orchard and is my ride Pokémon whenever I travel. She's stubborn, like any Mudsdale, but my most loyal friend.
Dusty is my Arcanine, and definitely in love with Cassia (probably the main reason he sticks around). He likes lazing around in the sunbeams on my porch, and I sometimes have to clean up scorch marks when he soaks up too much heat.
Atlas is a Totodile, and adopted rescue from one of my wrangling jobs. He has been adopted by Astrid and she's been taking wonderful care of him; this is unexpected, but promising for Atlas' well being. Atlas loves running around after Astrid and being held by people.
Kiska is a shiny Mareanie (yes, I know her image is of a normal one) who I adopted from Floaroma Sanctuary. She's feisty, but has proven to be a great friend to my established team. I'm definitely keeping her away from the local kids until she's been trained.
That's most of my info! Questions / Asks / Interactions are welcome :)

Hi! Call me Sundew. I’m a young adult, busy from Uni, based near the Arctic Circle. Please be kind! I curate my internet experience very harshly and will not interact with anyone/anything that makes me anxious. Tone indicators help a lot! (Especially when it comes to jokes) If you’d like to RP or plan an interaction drop me a DM!
I’d prefer if people under the age of 16 didn’t DM me. I want this blog to be enjoyable for anyone, but I’m uncomfortable with privately talking to someone younger than any of my real-life friends. Feel free to send an ask though!
If you want to send an ask to me instead of my characters, just address it to Sundew. :)

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: A Nostalgic Trip with a Few New Twists
Michael Keaton returns as the ghost with the most, but does Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (or Beetlejuice 2 for those who want to get technical) live up to the original’s ghoulish charm, or is it just another ghost from the past trying to cash in on our nostalgia? The short answer: a little of both. The long answer? Let’s dig up this film’s plot and see what’s buried underneath. Michael Keaton: Still Bringing the Juice When it comes to Michael Keaton, the man doesn’t miss a beat—or a spook. His portrayal of Beetlejuice is as unhinged and hilarious as ever. In a world where reboots often fall flat, Keaton manages to summon the same chaotic energy that made the original Beetlejuice a cult classic. His manic charm is one of the main reasons to give this movie a watch, even if just for the laughs. In Beetlejuice two, Keaton's Beetlejuice gets some fresh undead meat to work with, including Jenna Ortega as Astrid, Lydia Deetz’s daughter. Ortega is solid, but she’s got big boots to fill, and while she holds her own, the real magic happens when Keaton and Winona Ryder’s Lydia share the screen. Their banter feels like a natural continuation of where we left off in 1988, with just enough new material to keep things from feeling too dusty. Nostalgia Overload with a Side of New Stuff The movie plays heavily on nostalgia—something fans will appreciate, especially with nods to the original’s iconic soundtrack. You’ll be humming along to the familiar tunes, but don’t expect any ground-breaking new tracks here. It’s a classic case of, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But don’t get too comfortable—Beetlejuice 2 throws in some new characters and plot twists that might catch you off guard. Take Lydia’s new job as a ghost medium, for instance. It’s a surprise, sure, but it also feels a bit off for her character. Lydia was the queen of embracing the weird in the first movie, so seeing her burnt out on ghosts raises an eyebrow. Did New York do that to her? We may never know, but it’s a question that lingers. And let’s talk about the claymation death of Charles Deetz—because yes, it’s as ridiculous and funny as it sounds. The movie keeps its roots in the absurd, with moments like these sprinkled throughout. It’s pure Tim Burton in all the right ways, but at times, it feels like the movie is relying a bit too much on the tried-and-true rather than pushing into new territory. Homages and Easter Eggs: Spot the Burton Cameos Tim Burton fans will get a kick out of the numerous homages to his other works. There are some cool cameos (keep an eye out for the janitor) that are highlights. And if you’re sharp, you’ll catch nods to The Addams Family and The Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s like Burton’s been saving up all his spooky Easter eggs just for this movie. Willem Dafoe’s character, though corny at times, is exactly what you’d expect from him. The man knows how to ham it up when needed, and in a movie like this, it works. The Ghost of a Good Movie Is Beetlejuice two a kids’ movie? It certainly feels like it at times. The humor is more playful, the scares are toned down, and the whole vibe is more family-friendly. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does make you wonder who the movie is really for—the fans of the original or a new generation of younger viewers. The movie truly shines when Beetlejuice is let loose to do his thing. The last part of the film is a wild ride, with Keaton’s character wreaking havoc in ways only he can. But the big showdown? It’s a bit too easy. For all the buildup, you’d expect a more challenging takedown, but it’s over quicker than you can say his name three times. Final Thoughts: Should You Watch? If you’re here for the nostalgia and to see Michael Keaton back in his iconic role, you won’t be disappointed. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice delivers exactly what you’d expect, with a few new twists to keep it from being a total rehash. However, if you’re looking for something groundbreaking or a deeper dive into the world of the strange and unusual, you might find yourself wanting a bit more. But hey, isn’t that the point of Beetlejuice? To leave you hanging, wanting just one more trick or one more gag? Whether or not this movie leaves you spellbound or underwhelmed will likely depend on just how much you loved the original. Read the full article

Aftershockshipping Playlist
After reading Chapter 40 of @weekend-whip‘s Born to Be a 21st Century Ninja, I... managed to talk myself into making a playlist for Aftershock (Cole x Jesse)... and Ren (weekend-whip) wanted to see it, so... here it is, I guess.
Just a heads up, I don’t normally share playlists, but I just needed to showcase the vibe these two together give me. It’s mostly inspired by the events of the chapter itself & what could’ve been logically playing during Tox’s set at Rockshot, but also just general vibes outside of that setting, though some may feel like they are from a specific perspective (like, you can feel which song is Cole or Jesse), or it is completely unrelated but meshed well into the vibes so I thought “screw it, throw it in”. I’m also thinking that this could be expanded on in future, but let’s keep it “small” for now.
So, in no particular but alphabetical order because I can’t curate effectively, enjoy:
Adore - Cashmere Cat ft. Ariana Grande
All For You - Rynx ft. Kiesza
Animal - Kesha
Atic - Astrid S

Quick Legacyverse Headcanon: NEVER challenge Cole to a Just Dance competition.
That man will destroy you.
Oh? You thought you could throw him off with an Extreme routine that you recently just learned? He's already got Megastar on that.
Your only chance of surviving... is to just play the game with him on casual terms. He'll still dance circles around you, but you'll make out alive with your pride intact, I promise you.

Incorrect Legacyverse Quotes
PART 1
Jesse: I need a moment with him.
Secret Ninja Force: Of course.
They leave
Jesse, leaning over Cole′s coffin: Okay, listen here you little shit. I know you’re not dead.
Cole: Yeah, no shit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jesse: Name a more iconic duo than my crippling fear of abandonment and my anxiety. I'll wait.
Cole: You and me!!!
Jesse, tearing up: Okay.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Olivia: Here’s a fun Christmas idea. We hang mistletoe, but instead of kissing, you have to FIGHT whoever else is under it.
Jesse: Olivia no.
Jamie: Mistlefoe.
Jesse: Please stop encouraging them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jay: HELP! I TOLD NYA I’D COOK DINNER TONIGHT BUT I CAN’T COOK!
Cole, pouring milk directly into the cereal bag: And you thought I could help?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Olivia: Let me show you a picture from last night that really upset me.
Puffer: Okay, but in my defence, Four-Eyes bet me 50 cents I couldn’t drink all that shampoo.
Olivia: That’s not what I wanted to- you drank SHAMPOO?!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cole: I think we're missing something.
Zane: Teamwork?
Jay: Cohesion?
Kai: A general sense of what we’re doing?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zane, about Kai: Apparently we’re getting someone new in the group.

k more poor, bored, pattern-obsessed brain has kept thinking about this and noticed that not only is Turlough very present in this comic, he’s slightly more prominent than other companions featured.
Sarah Jane is there at the beginning at gets dialogue, so she also gets a bit of special emphasis, but then the companion with 10 switches to Adric. Adric is in a single panel before switching to Turlough. Turlough stays Turlough for several panels.
Throughout the jump until the fall, Turlough remains the companion with the Doctor. This only changes when we get the Susan/Astrid/Kamelion/Turlough panel, which still ends back at Turlough. You’d think that from the list of companions the comic included, the focus would be on either:
A. Sarah Jane. She’s very iconic and was in 10th Doctor stories
B. Susan. She’s special as the Doctor’s granddaughter and 10 probably thinks she’s dead, adding to his Time War Guilt.
C. Astrid. Someone that 10 specifically failed to save.
D. Adric. He died and had more appearances than Kamelion.
But 10′s subconscious mind focuses on Turlough.
I have this sort of theory that the Doctor thinks of past companions differently than they thought of them at the time. Based on 13 describing all her companions in an annual, 13 has an appreciation for Martha that 10 really should’ve had. She’s also fond of just how random Dodo is.
In Attack of the Cybermen, where 6 keeps calling Peri the names of past companions, he references Susan, Zoe, Tegan, and Jamie. The Two Doctors novelization has a moment of him thinking about his former companions and Leela and the Brigadier are the two examples his mind immediately goes to. The fact that a more violent Doctor thinks of two companions who were both very Down to Murder by companion standards makes sense.
Basically, all the Doctors play favorites with their companions sometimes, but that continues with past companions. Martha is one of 13′s favorites, Leela is one of 6′s favorites, and Turlough is one of 10′s favorites.
Time Crash has 10 be a 5 fanboy, so maybe he’s nostalgic for 5′s companions???
That Time Turlough Showed Up in Ten's Nightmare
So, there's a comic from the 2010 IDW Annual (not to be confused with the 2010 Doctor Who Annual, IDW and the BBC had different annuals apparently) called To Sleep, Perchance to Scream. It's about the 10th Doctor having a nightmare about being unable to save his past companions. Which companions are featured is interesting.
So, 10's in this apocalyptic wasteland, where he runs into Sarah Jane.
They run from monsters for a few panels before Sarah Jane starts to shapeshift into other companions. 10 and Adric run into a very stupid-looking dragon, the 10 and Turlough have to jump for their lives.
But 10 loses his companion during the jump and Susan/Astrid/Kamelion/Turlough falls to their death.
What's weird here is that companions that died, so of course the Doctor would have nightmares about failing to save them, are mixed in with companions who were completely fine when he last saw them.
Adric, Astrid (who was a companion for like two hours so it's odd how her death is equated to some of the others here), and Kamelion all died onscreen. In the case of Susan, 10 believes all the other Time Lords to be dead, so he might believe Susan to be dead.
Sarah Jane and Turlough are fine.
Sarah Jane is there at the very beginning and is not one of the companions shown falling, so she's not emphasized in the same way as the others. She might just be there because she's well-known to both old and new fans.
But, the last panel of companions falling goes from 10 Probably Thinks She's Dead, to Dead, to Dead, to 10 Has No Reason to Believe He's Dead. And Turlough is the one 10 is shown to be with just before the jump. I think the falling silhouette in the last panel might also be him.
So, 10 has nightmares about the companions he failed to save and also Turlough dying. His subconscious equates Turlough to Astrid and Kamelion. I have no idea why. But, it's interesting. So I had to type words about it at 3 AM.
#Tenth Doctor#Vislor Turlough#sixth doctor#Leela of the Sevateem#13th doctor#Martha Jones#i can't stop overanalyzing this comic guys#10 you can control your tardis just drop by trion if ur worried
