I love when I'm reading a comic with grawlix and I have to figure out what swear it's supposed to represent. bonus points if it's borderline unintelligible

I'm new to comics and love beast. Is there any comics with beast that you'd recommend? There's so many xmen comics and idk where to start.
Hello there, friend! Getting into comic books is damned hard, but, thankfully, resources like Reddit, Tumblr, and Marvel Unlimited (or your pirating site of choice) all make it a lot easier to get into them these days without having to worry about being confused.
Well. You'll still be a little confused. Comic books are convoluted. But at least you'll be able to engage with them on your own terms. :) And, it's worth it. Mostly.
I'll tell you straight out that if you want some good entry points, like, this is my first X-Men comic, what do I read, I'd recommend the following:
X-Men: First Class (2006)
X-Men vol. 2 (1991)
New X-Men vol. 1 (2001)
Astonishing X-Men vol. 3 (2004)
X-Men vol. 6 (2024)
As for Beast specific recommendations? I have a ton!
For Beast as a character, being examined in his own right, I would recommend the following:
X-Men Origins: Beast - a retelling of his origin, updated with modern art and writing. Written by Mike Carey, whose work you should generally look into if you like X-Men - he focuses a lot on characters like Rogue and Xavier, but also on Beast, which is handy for our purposes!
X-Men: Unlimited vol. 1 #10 and vol. 2 #10 - so, this may be somewhat confusing to a new comic reader, but comics have volumes. This is when a comic of a certain title ends, and it's then relaunched with a new creative team, usually with a very different story.
So, X-Men: Unlimited is an anthology series that tells unconnected stories that fit in other places, between other comics, and there were two different volumes of it, one in the 90s, and one in the 00s. Both volumes have an issue #10 that focuses on Beast, and I'd recommend them both! Vol. 1 #10 especially would be, in my opinion, required reading if you really want to get into Beast.
Amazing Adventures vol. 2 #11 through #17 - the first stab at giving Hank his own solo series, from back in the 70s! Don't let the age get you down, I find this series to be actually fairly modern and easy to get into, and it's a nice sort of superhero/horror blend of tones that I find really effective.
X-Men: Endangered Species - this is a Beast solo story dealing with the aftermath of the Decimation, the event where Scarlet Witch removed the powers of 99% of the world's mutants. It's quite dark, but I think it's probably one of the best examinations of the character in the medium, and it works as an excellent sequel to Unlimited vol. 1 #10. Most of the context you need is given to you in the comic, which is handy. :)
X-Men: S.W.O.R.D vol. 1 - this is kind of a team-up comic, kind of not? The context for this is reliant on reading another run that I'll be recommending, but trust me, it's worth it. This is an outrageously funny book with a good emotional core, and it really captures Beast's essence, as a dual sided goofball jokester with a heart of gold and the intellectual moralistic do-gooder who can't leave well enough alone. One of my favourite comics of all time.
For Beast as part of a team, I would recommend the following:
X-Men: First Class - a prequel book set during the days of the Original X-Men, this series bounces between Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Marvel Girl and Beast a fair bit, but even in issues that don't focus on Beast, he's still a part of the story and quite well written. Very slice-of-lifey, with a lot of charm to it.
X-Men: Season One - a retelling of certain stories from the original 60s run of X-Men, this is a pretty good one-and-done graphic novel that does change a few things, but keeps the spirit intact and tells you a lot about these characters and how they relate to one another. Just watch out for Iceman's Bieber hair.
Avengers vol. 1 #137-211 - this is a pretty long run of comics that features Hank's initial tenure on the Avengers, and will occasionally require a bit of reading around to make sure that you're reading the Annuals in the right place - usually, the comic will tell you to go read Annual #6 or whatever, but if you find a lot of stuff has happened and the story jumped ahead without you, chances are, it's in an Annual. Very variable in quality, but if you want to see classic Beast in all his glory, there's some really good stuff here, especially the foundation of his lifelong friendship with Wonder Man.
The Defenders/New Defenders vol. 1 #96-152 - probably one of my actual favourite run of comics ever. Beast joins the team a little later than #96, but if you jump in when Hank does, you'll be just a little confused, so it's best to start at #96 and go from there. Especially once Hank reforms the team to the New Defenders in #125, he basically becomes one of the very main characters and gets a lot of focus. Absolutely love this comic.
X-Factor vol. 1 #1-70 - the first six or seven issues of this are pretty bad, but it really comes into its own once it starts being written by Louise Simonson, who makes it much more soap opera, more character driven, gives all the characters a lot to do. There's a lot of crossover with other books, but usually it'll just tell you what to read if you want to know more about a part of a story in little editor's notes!
X-Men vol. 2 #1-95 - the classic 90s run; not my personal favourite, because it's pretty confusingly plotted, but if you want something that hews extremely close to the 90s cartoon, this is that to a tee, to the point where a lot of stories and characters were adapted to and from the comics directly!
New X-Men vol. 1 #114-156 - a landmark run on X-Men by Grant Morrison, this evolves Beast into a new form and changes up his character in a new, tragic manner that, personally, is my favourite iteration of the character. Very high concept sci-fi, occasionally quite confusing and problematic, but extremely good stuff, imo, and essential for getting into modern X-Men.
Astonishing X-Men vol. 3 #1-35 - a sort of sequel to New X-Men, this is again an extremely good entry point into modern X-Men, and it's very, very classic while still progressing the story. Just a note - when you read issue #24, do NOT go to issue #25, you need to go and read Giant Size Astonishing X-Men instead, THEN go to #25. I know, it's confusing, I'm so, so, so sorry, comics are just like this. This is the comic that leads straight into S.W.O.R.D pretty much.
Wolverine and the X-Men vol. 1 #1-42 - a more zany, school focused book, Hank is part of the wider cast here, but he does get some spotlight issues, and I do enjoy him here, especially his relationship with Broo. There are crossovers with Avengers vs. X-Men and other events in here, but those events are kinda sort skippable because they're bad. If you feel confused, you can read them, but I don't necessarily recommend them.
X-Men vol. 6 #1-ongoing - the current run of X-Men, written by Jed MacKay! To put it very bluntly, Beast went through about a decade of being quite badly written and slowly turned into a scummy villain through the recent Krakoa era, which I was not a fan of. There are individual issues between 2013 and 2024 that I can recommend, but if you like Beast, I would not recommend reading them, because I think that they are pretty bad and not fun to read. This is me being kind. But the new series picks up after that's all fixed, and Beast is getting a lot to do in this series, so I'd recommend it!
X-Men: From the Ashes Infinity Comics #15-18 - a supplementary comic that focuses on Beast, best read alongside the above X-Men run I recommended; it can give you all the context you need for where Beast is at, and why he's feeling the way that he is. A very, very good read, way exceeded my expectations, and I'm really pleased I can actually recommend modern comics for Beast again!
These are the main runs I would recommend! There's a lot more, if we want to get esoteric, and I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of material - Beast has been around for 60 years, he's been in a LOT of stories - but if you want to get stuck into X-Men comics and really immerse yourself into the world and the stories, there's a lot of really good material here!
Welcome to the X-Men comics, friend! Hope you survive the experience!

hey! so I really want to get into comic books I've read a few before in the saga series but I was wondering where do you start with xmen? I'm so confused about the order which is why I've haven't started the marvel ones either Is there a guide or something? thanks
hi! comics are very messy and confusing in general, but the x-men's time-line is quite complicated. the x-men have been around since the 60s and are among the most popular superhero teams of all time, so there's a lot of content from them. before i start with this guide, keep in mind that you don't have and shouldn't read all of those titles. there's a lot of content, and you should just read the ones you're truly interested in, and skip the ones you don't like. the concept of canon is really subjetive, and it's really up to you and your interpretation of these titles.
this guide is not as detailed or accurate as i would like. this is just my take on which titles i think you should read, or at least keep in mind. either way, i hope it's useful to you.
x-men, the reading order:
uncanny x-men (1963) → this title is a must read. it's the debut of the x-men as a team, and it has more than #500 issues. this title is probably the main x-men comic-book, because it has a lot of x-men classics. i recommend you to read the following issues: uncanny x-men (1963) [#1 - #93], giant size x-men (1975) #1, uncanny x-men (1963) [#94 - #100], uncanny x-men (1963) [#101 - #108 + #129 - #138] (phoenix/dark phoenix saga). then, continue with the following issues that contain these classic x-men stories, such as: days of the future past, the brood saga, mutant massacre, fall of the mutants, inferno, x-tinction agenda, muir island saga, x-cutioner's song.
x-men (1991) → this title is a must read. alongside uncanny x-men (1963), x-men (1991) is a classic, and it has more than #200 issues. i sugest you to read x-men (1991) [#1 - #109] and go thought the age of apocalypse saga, onslaught, etc.
new x-men (2001) → this title is a must read. it contains key events that shaped modern x-men comics considerably. it contains more than #40 issues.
x-treme x-men (2001) → this title is not as important as the previous ones, but it is interesting. the main plot revolves around the destiny's diaries storyline.
astonishing x-men (2004) → this title is a must read. it contains more than #60 issues and it has a lot of memorable moments. the plot revolves around a genetic cure that is able to neutralize/erase mutant powers.
house of m (2006) → this title is a must read. this event is very significant to the x-men, and it completely changes the status quo of mutantkind.
then, you should read the following storylines, in this order: supernovas, endangered species, messiah complex, dark x-men, utopia, nation x, necrosha, second coming, age of x, schism, avengers vs. x-men. all these storylines are scatered around a lot of x-titles, such as:
uncanny x-men (1963) [#492 - #544], x-men (1991) [#188 - #207], x-men: legacy (2008) [#208 - #275], x-men (2010), x-men: schism (2011), x-men: regenesis (2011), uncanny x-men (2012), avengers vs. x-men (2012), uncanny x-men (2013), x-men (2013), uncanny x-men (2016).
after that, a new era starts:
uncanny avengers (2012), wolverine and the x-men (2015), all-new x-men (2016), death of x (2016), inhumans vs. x-men (2016), astonishing x-men (2017), x-men: gold (2017), x-men: blue (2017).
those are the main titles and storylines that you should keep in mind to get into the x-men and their story. in 2019, the x-men universe got rebooted and a new era started, called dawn of x. to follow the events of the dawn of x era, you should read:
house of x (2019), powers of x (2019), x-men (2019) + x-men (2021).
that would be a really rough and general reading order for the x-men comics. the x-men have a lot of subdivisions/secondary teams, like new mutants, x-force, x-factor, excalibur, generation x, etc. those teams are also key parts on the x-men story, but they aren't main titles. you could take a look at those titles, but if you decide to skip them, it wouldn't really make a huge diference.
i tried to summarize it the best way i could. i hope this was helpful to you!

Hi Michelle! What did you read to become familiar with the X-Men (and related teams)? I've been a comic reader for a while and I want to finally start X-Men comics but they're kind of overwhelming 😬 Thanks!
hi!!! i mostly read stories that i heard were good + stories about my faves!! it helps that the xmen comics are mostly team based so its easier to just jump in. i would recommend:
phoenix + dark phoenix saga
astonishing x-men (2004) — controversial ..... but yeah
new x-men (2004)
x-men (2010) — i havent finished this yet but i like it so far
x-men messiah complex
THE ENTIRE UTOPIA ARC
uncanny x-men (2012)
uncanny x-men (2013) — also controversial i know but i love scott in it
x-men red
some individual runs:
x-23 (2010)
all-new wolverine
shatterstar
mr and mrs x
storm (2014)
OR if you would like to just jump into the current ongoing era of x-men:
start with house of x and powers of x, the issues alternate but there’s a reading list at the end of every issue
x-men (2019)
excalibur (2019)
marauders (2019)
x-force (2019)
fallen angels (2019)
new mutants (2019)
hellions (2020)
cable (2020)
x-factor (2020)
wolverine (2020)
children of the atom (2021)
tbh i wouldnt really recommend getting started here bc its not the best (house of x and powers of x are really good though) but if you wanted to just jump into current then those are the list of titles currently running! fallen angels is over and way of x and x-corp are about to launch soon. they’ve also already done one event (x of swords) and another one (hellfire gala) is about to begin!
#i always say this with reading any comic in general but its easier if u have like#a spcific route u want to go in! like ive done reads for kwannon madelyne lorna etc so its easier#to follow guides for those than to blindly read ejbfjhsashjdb#anon#m.inbox#comic recs

hello im trying 2 get into xmen :0 do u have any recommendations for comics? (especially ones that like. focus on women) tysm!! :3c
Hi! I have a lot of suggestions, butI’ll do my best to make it manageable :P
Intro to the X-Men:
X-Men: Season One - This is a retelling of the origins of the X-Men, from Jean Grey’s point of view. A stand-alone graphic novel.
X-Men: Grand Design, X-Men: Grand Design - Second Genesis, X-Men: Grand Design - X-Tinction - These three titles (six issues total) are supposed to sum up many, many years of X-comics in a very small amount of space. Very good for giving a basic idea of what happened in early X-continuity (although not, in my opinion, a substitute for reading the original stories).
Easy, modern(ish) starting points:
X-Men (2013) - Jubilee shows up to the X-Men with a baby, and the rest of the plot unfolds from there. An all-female X-Men team led by Storm, featuring Jubilee, Rachel Grey, and Psylocke. Does good character work with most of them.
Astonishing X-Men (2004) #48-68 - Written by Marjorie Liu and roughly contemporary with X-Men (2013), it features some of the lesser-used X-ladies: Karma, Warbird, Cecilia Reyes.
Chris Claremont was the X-Men writerfor many, many years; he did a lot to define the X-line and the characters init. I think he’s important, but that doesn’t excuse his racism, and sometimes hiswriting style is just kind of annoying. If you hate old comics, his work is notrequired, but it is iconic and frequently referenced, so it’s good to know. Thisis just a very small selection of the comics he’s done:
The Dark Phoenix Saga – Obviously,we start with the most iconic. The Dark Phoenix Saga is usually defined as UncannyX-Men #129-137 and covers the transformation of the X-Man Jean Grey into avillain. As a Phoenix fan, I think the DPS is better if you read the LightPhoenix Saga (Uncanny X-Men #104-109) first.
God Loves, Man Kills – A stand-alonegraphic novel that features Magneto and the X-Men teaming up to stop the riseof anti-mutant sentiment driven by an evangelical preacher. A good look at themutant metaphor and what does and doesn’t work with it.
The New Mutants – This is the classicexample of the X-Men-as-boarding-school. It introduces a lot of fascinating andmuch-loved characters to the X-line, including Dani Moonstar, Wolfsbane, andKarma, and while it isn’t Illyana’s introduction, it does a lot for her development.Start with the New Mutants graphic novel and then the 1983 series.
Excalibur – A fun, colorful comicbook that heavily features Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde. This comic exists in themiddle of X-canon and the Captain Britain canon in a way that’s pretty unique. Startwith the graphic novel Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn and then the 1988 series.
Solo series:
Storm (2014) – I will rec this everychance I get. Some of the best writing ever of one of the most importantmembers of the X-Men. Written by Greg Pak with art by Victor Ibañez.
X-23 (2010) – The series where LauraKinney, Wolverine’s clone, figures out her personhood. Featuring some goodappearances by Jubilee. Another one by Marjorie Liu.
Some other options:
Uncanny X-Force (2010) – If you likeyour comics darker and more violent, then this is that. I think it’s worth itmostly for the Psylocke content. I’ve included it on this list mostly toillustrate how broad the X-line can be.
Dimension-hopping time – Exiles (2001)and X-Treme X-Men (2012) – These comics are pretty different in tone andcontent, but they both feature teams that make their way through many differentversions of reality. Exiles gave us the wonderful characters Clarice Fergusonand TJ Wagner, and X-Treme X-Men features a very cool AU version of Dazzler.
X-Men Legacy (2008) – This is thebook where Rogue grows up, and it features a lot of her interacting with theyounger generation of mutants. I’d recommend starting at #220.
If any of this is unclear, if you have any further questions, if you want recs for a specific character, or anything like that, please let me know! I’m always happy to help!

Of course piracy is wrong and I should righteously give all my money to the Mouse, as should all my followers, but as I am a sinner, I will take this helpful pointer and go to confession after doing my crimes.

my jean/ororo/emma fic bcs i probably wont write it:
ororo/emma is established relationship, the timeline is around astonishing xmen (2004), after jean's death scott did not pursue a relationship with emma like a normal grieving human being. emma feels an outcast. she shadows ororo out of a desire to learn how to be... gentler, with the kids. ororo welcomes the company of someone with a taste for finery, like herself, but who doesn't balk in a fight. at first she kept emma at arm's distance, but she realized her desire to Be Better was sincere. the relationship comes about naturally, romantically, under moonlight, it spans across the world through their telephatic link when they're apart and it warms them closely and intimately when flush together.
then ororo and emma go on a mission alone. They're unexpectedly trapped and cut off from communicating with the rest of the xmen. theres telephatic interference where they're stuck and their clothes are ruined. ororo is used to dark, abandoned catacombs as a thrillseeker and adventurer. in a moment of weakness emma reaches for her hand and holds it tight in the dark.
if they cannot get out, then they must go deeper. Something calls to ororo like siren song. sweet and familiar sings a voice she cannot place. until she can. and she runs to it, because it's jean's spirit trapped inside some sort of mirror glass clearly designed for the purpose of holding jean grey's soul in the moment it left her body. this strange temple was in fact a lab, and it wasn't prepared for the power it cast a bait out to catch. what's left of the men that hurt her friend is ash.
it's a love triangle because my name is rosi cykelops and i specialize in them.
