A New Surprise
This is a self-indulgent ficlet of Astarion and Halsin discussing something strange happening with their lover. This does use a personal headcanon that I posted previously for Halsin and Astarion. I may make a part 2 but we will see how that goes.
Summary: Astarion knows something weird is happening with their lover, but he can’t get them to take him seriously. He goes to Halsin to try and get reinforcements.
Pairing: Astarion x gn!Reader x Halsin / Astarion x gn!Tav x Halsin
Warnings: mentions periods but uses they/them pronouns, pregnancy symptoms, a moment of angst, tooth rotting sweetness, no use of y/n
Word count: 1,607 words
You and your lovers had managed to settle down into a nice little cabin after the tadpole removal and saving Baldur's Gate. It was outside of the city, at the edge of a large, forested area so that way Halsin can be near nature and that way Astarion doesn't need to worry about prying eyes watching you all.
Astarion was antsy, he just could not calm the racing thoughts that coursed through his head after hearing his lover become sick again as they had for the last several days. The first day he had wrote it off as possibly food sickness, Halsin agreeing that their lover just needed rest but now… now he could smell that something was changing with them and it made bile rise into his throat with worry.
He tried to bring it up with their lover, but they simply brushed it off and gave him a kiss on the cheek telling him not to worry so much. So, after they had left the cabin to go into the city for supplies, he waited for Halsin to return.
It didn't take long for him to hear the druid return from gathering firewood, opening one of the windows and looking outside for him.
"Halsin! I need to speak with you! Urgently please if you would come inside." Halsin looked up, laying the last of the firewood in a neat pile next to the cabin.
"I hope everything is alright, my Heart. I will be inside in a moment." Astarion let out a huff before closing the window and continued his pacing. It did not take long for Halsin to enter the cabin, observing Astarion's nervous pacing. "What is troubling you?" Astarion scoffed, running a hand through his silver hair as he continued to walk.
"Something is wrong with them. First, I thought it was just a food sickness, but it’s been happening for days and now I can smell something is wrong! Something has changed! They won't listen to me; they keep telling me everything is fine! You have to talk to them and get them to see a healer, hells teeth have them even see Shadowheart at the least!" Halsin listened to Astarion rave before walking over to him and grabbing him by the shoulders and forcing his vermillion eyes to look into his hazel ones.
"My heart, nothing is wrong. I smell it too, but it is not a sickness." A frown twisted itself to Astarion's face before he scoffed at Halsin.
"Oh, then pray tell what is wrong with them, Halsin?" Halsin stared at Astarion for a moment before giving him a small smile.
"If I am correct, our dearest is pregnant. I don't know if even they are aware of it yet, but I've been around enough people to know how pregnancy changes a person's scent." Astarion stared at the large elf for a moment, his mind trying to wrap itself around the outlandish thought of their lover carrying a child. Not just any child, possibly their child. No, it couldn't be possible to be Astarion's. All logic pointed towards Halsin being the sire and while he knew he should be happy; it left a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Oh… you must be so happy. You two getting to play happy family." Astarion sneered, taking a step back away from Halsin. Halsin frowned before he signed and shook his head before looking back at the pale elf.
"Astarion, no matter who the sire of the child is, it does not change anything. You know that I love both of you and you know that they love both of us as well. We can raise the child together, the three of us." Halsin gave Astarion a soft smile, opening his arms to him. Astarion stared at him for a moment, letting his words sink in before stepping forward and into Halsin's open arms, buring his face into Halsin's neck and inhaling his calming scent.
"I know, I know you won't abandon me but… I don't know where I would fit in this anymore once we add a child into it." Halsin hummed softly as he held Astarion to him, rubbing his back gently.
"You would still be their father; the child will want not for love. You, Me, and our lover. Though I would let them tell us in their own time, if they already know I don't think they realize we can smell it on them." Halsin chuckled softly, Astarion smiling before letting go of Halsin and taking a step back.
"You… You are right. I don't know how we would exactly bring it up to them. 'Hey darling, just so you know we can smell that we've knocked you up.' I doubt that it wouldn't startle them at the very least." Halsin laughed, laying his hand on Astarion's shoulder shaking his head.
"Agreed. I am sure our Heart will figure it out in their own time and will share the good news with us when they are ready. Until then, how about we start some lunch? They should be returning from the city in due time, and I am sure they would be very appreciative to have something for their belly." Astarion nodded and a comfortable silence filled the space between the two elves as they started preparing a simple lunch.
~~~
It was within the hour that you returned to the cabin, excitement bubbling in your belly at the news you had learned from the healer you had told you. A gentle smile graced your face as you entered the cabin calling out for your lovers.
"Astarion, Halsin! I'm back!" You closed the door behind you, adjusting the basket you had in your arms. You could hear them in the kitchen area and soon Astarion entered the living room, smiling at you.
"Pet, I trust everything was alright? You didn't have to fight off any vagabonds?" You laughed and shook your head, walking to him and kissing his cheek.
"Nothing so exciting. Just got a few things we will be needing. I trust Halsin is in the kitchen?"
"I am, my Heart!" His voice carried as Astarion reached forward to take your basket only for you to move it out of his grasp, shaking your head.
"No, no. This is a surprise for you and Halsin. You can see what it is after we eat lunch." Astarion gave you a questioning look but relented, moving to the side and motioning for you to walk into the kitchen. You walked in and saw Halsin, finishing the meal's preparation. He looked over his shoulder at you and gave you one of his soft smiles.
"My Heart, how was your errand?" You returned his smile as you took a seat at the small table, putting the basket next to you.
"It was fine. Nothing too exciting." Astarion followed your lead, sitting next to you as Halsin set the light meal of meats, berries, and bread in front of you. "Actually I got something I wanted to show you and Astarion." He looked at you, puzzled before taking the last seat across from you.
"Oh? Any what is it?" His eyes darted from you to the basket, hiding his curiosity only a little bit better than Astarion who was trying to steal a glance into the basket. You reached into the basket, looking between the two of them.
"Close your eyes. And no peaking, Astarion." Astarion rolled his eyes but smiled as he closed his eyes as Halsin did the same. You reached into the basket, pulling out a soft baby blanket and a pair of tiny shoes. You set the blanket into Halsin's waiting hands and then the pair into Astarion's smiling. "Alright, go ahead and open your eyes.
They opened their eyes, looking down at their hands. Astarion's face went blank, gently touching the tiny shoes as if they would turn to dust. Halsin ran his large hands over the soft material, a smile gracing his face before he looked up to you.
"Was this your errand today, my Heart?" You nodded your head, placing your hand over your stomach.
"Yes, I missed my monthly bleeding and as Astarion has noticed I've been getting sick, so I went to see a healer today and confirm." Halsin stood up, walking to your side and kissing you gently and placing his hand over your own. You glanced over at Astarion as he sat there like a statue, staring at the tiny shoes.
"Astarion?" You tried to keep your voice calm, but it wavered slightly causing him to glance up at you. He did not say a word as he put the shoes down on the table, leaning over to you and placing his hand on top of yours and Halsin's.
"We're going to have a baby." You smiled and nodded your head, trying to blink back the tears that you could feel pricking up.
"Yes, we’re going to have a baby." Astarion gave you both a smile before kissing you gently as Halsin nuzzled your neck.
"I guess this means no more midnight snacks for me, from you at least." You laughed at Astarion, feeling Halsin chuckle.
"Not until we meet our newest arrival." Astarion's eyes drifted down to your hands, smiling softly.
"It will be worth it. Should we start a betting pool on if they are a boy or a girl?" Halsin laughed, throwing his head back and looked at Astarion.
"No matter what the cub is, they will be loved."
"Agreed." You smiled at the two of them, feeling overwhelmed with excitement and love with thoughts of the future.
This isn't necessarily my interpretation of the situation but I do wanna say
Maybe Astarion sees Halsin as a gift to their relationship
Especially if you get the more rough side of Astarion's romance, if your Tav has never chosen him over another companion so Tav never gets the "consider yourself well and truly taken " line,
If Tav gets the Araj confession so they never get an "I love you", if Tav picked dialogue choices that get you the "I don't know what I want, I don't know what we are" (and honestly this all works even if you get the full I love you, even if the relationship is as solid as possible and Tav has gotten the softest versions of all the lines, Astarion STILL takes/needs to take a break so this does work for all scenarios)
If the relationship is as rocky as it can be, and he's *trying* but he HAS to take time for himself, he doesn't want to hurt Tav any more with manipulations but he CANNOT be Tav's support right now, not when HE needs Tav to support him so badly and he has NOTHING to offer or give at this point, he's scraping the bottom of his own barrel trying to regain his sense of self
And there is Halsin. A 350 year old free agent polyamorous wood elf with hundreds of years of experience with many kinds of partner, who knows exactly how to communicate, how to be patient and wait for appropriate moments to speak on his feelings, how to ensure that consent is at the forefront
And here is Halsin, offering ONLY what you wish to take, expressing clearly that if and when Astarion is ready, he himself is more than welcome as well. Halsin being an open door with no red flags, offering you (Tav) every ounce of loyal, safe comfort and sexual attention that Astarion can't right now.
Some people see this as a thing Asty would get jealous or possessive about and not only do I not see evidence of that in game, I kinda see the opposite. He sees Halsin as a gift HE can give to Tav, without any fear of losing them or what they have because that's just not what Halsin is offering. Halsin is asking permission to join in, with everyone's approval. Not to take anything away from Astarion.
Idk I just see Asty looking at Halsin with gratitude, thankful that someone can be there for Tav while he's sorting himself out. And then later on, if Tav and Astarion finish Asty's romance and bang on the grave and everything, he's just so much more comfortable and stable and Halsin has been nothing but a positive influence and-
I just see it going very well?? If they become a triad, it would be very organic and likely chance in dynamics over time, if they don't I see their friendships being very strong and warm and comfortable. I don't have a Tav who has romanced them both at the same time but I just don't see it going poorly in any way idk.
down by the river - Chapter 10
Raphael x Warlock!Tav
Read on AO3
Chapter 9
A/N: hey guys it's been forever, I know. My college classes came back and so did my internship, I'm participating in two different plays and just recently did I go back on my medication, so it has been very hard to find some time to sit down and write. This chapter is shorter because of that but I'm glad to have finally updated the story.
It was the last night before they finally attacked Moonrise Towers.
Everyone in camp was tense, especially after the previous night’s events. Shadowheart, in her path towards becoming a Dark Justiciar, ended up turning away from Shar, and freeing the aasimar Aylin, the source of General’s Ketheric immortality.
Minthara and Lae’zel both were sharpening their weapons, the drow more tense then the other. Karlach, Gale, Astarion, and Halsin made conversation, leaving Tav and Wyll by themselves.
The two warlocks sat in one Last Light’s balcony, looking out at the sky. Ever since the Nightsong flew free, it seemed as if the moon shone brighter. Tav had her feet up on the table, Lihala’s lute on her hands,  while Wyll looked down, troubled.
“You alright?” She asked.
Wyll looked up and shook his head. “I was just thinking how one’s life can change in an instant.” He looked at her. “Karlach was just a bodyguard when suddenly, she was sold to Zariel. Lae’zel, Minthara and now Shadowheart have all but practically abandoned their gods.” Wyll looked to the sky, closing his eyes. “With a wave of a hand, Mizora turned me into this.”
Tav nodded, choosing to remain quiet. Her fingers stroked the chords of the lute, playing a familiar tune from her childhood.
Wyll listened closely, lost in his thoughts. Then, he shook his head. “I never heard that one before.”
Tav smiled. “It’s an old song from my time. It’s not played as much nowadays.”
His head tilted, confused, and raised a brow in a silent question. He chuckled “It’s just… you don’t strike me as that old, Tav.”
She smirked. “I’ve been around much longer than you could imagine, boy.”
“How old are we talking, then?”
“Older than Hasin.”
Wyll frowned.
“It’s part of my contract with Raphael.” She explained, noticing his confusion. “As long as he is around, so will I be.”
“I see.” A moment of silence passed before he spoke again. “Doesn’t that worry you? To have your life tied around a devil?”
In the time they had spent together, it wasn’t the first time that Wyll had questioned Tav’s relationship with her patron.
Tav sighed, putting her lute down and her feet off the table, sitting closer to him. “I understand your worry. We all saw the way Mizora treated you, and I’ll be the first person to help you bring her down. It’s only reasonable you'd be wary of any of the…infernal persuasion.” She smiled kindly at him. “I appreciate your concern, I really do. It shows how much you care about others but… I know what I did when I signed that contract. And I have not regretted that decision since.”
She leaned back on her chair, taking the lute back. Tav noticed how Wyll’s shoulders slumped and how his brown was furrowed. She wondered what she could do to try and ease his worries.
Tav looked down at the instrument in her lap and then at her hands. As her fingers once again began to play a familiar melody, a memory came to mind.
“Let me tell you a story.”
A year had passed since Tav had signed the contract and in that time, she had yet to play her lute again.
The ink on the contract had not even dried when she felt her hand healing, bone, skin and muscle going back in their places. She felt a relief she had never felt before, and the urge to play once again.
And yet, whenever she picked up the lute, she faltered. Her hand would begin to shake and then freeze right on top of the strings. It had been so long since Tav had last played, that old voice of self doubt, the one who followed any new artist, was plaguing her mind again.
‘You can’t do it, it will be terrible, you should just give up and-’
“What are you doing?” A familiar voice brought her back to reality. She turned her head and saw Raphael standing very close to her.
Tav had decided to go to one of the many balconies in the House of Hope, away from the suffering debtors so that she could play in peace.
“I was…going to play.” The devil nodded and then took a seat across from her, gesturing towards the instrument.
“Go on.” He said, making himself comfortable. “Entertain me. I want to see that my fixing of your hand was for a good reason.”
Tav gulped and her hands began to sweat out of nervousness. She took a deep breath, trying to ease her mind, but the moment her fingers touched the strings again, Tav froze.
She was transported back to her first performance on stage. Her heart beat loudly, she swore that the audience could hear it. There was an unsteadiness to her legs, as if any wind would take her away. She remembered looking at all those people, staring at her, waiting for her to fail. She had closed her eyes before playing the chords and-
“Tav.” Raphael said sternly. “I gave you an order. You’d be wise to oblige.”
“I know. Just-” She took a deep breath. “Give me a moment.”
He raised a brow, leaning back on his chair. “It shouldn’t be this difficult to play, dear. You are a bard, after all.”
‘You are a bard. You are a bard. You are a bard.’
The phrase echoed in her head, almost like a mantra. Her first performance, how had it ended?
Tav remembered it. Once her fingers began to play, it was as if the music just came out of her. Playing, singing, it was as easy as breathing for her.
‘You can do this, Tav.’ She told herself as the first notes were played, her voice following after.
Lace your heart with mine
Let your sleeping soul take flight
Take me through the night
Down, down, down by the river…
Opening her eyes, she looked at Raphael. He had leaned back on his chair, eyes closed and a serene expression on his face. When the song abruptly came to an end, he was quick to question.
“Apologies. I haven’t finished writing this song. Didn’t get the chance.” She explained, looking down.
He hummed. “It’s an interesting song. Full of potential for something great. I’d like to see it finished.” Tav nodded, a smile beginning to form on her face. “Now, play something else. Something completed this time.” He leaned again and closed his eyes, just as she began again.
Back to the present, Tav looked at Wyll, reassuring him one last time. “Raphael is not perfect, not by any means. He is a devil, after all.” Wyll huffed at that and she reached forwards, putting a hand on his arm. “But he gave me back the gift of music. He gave me my life. You do not need to worry about me.”
Tav stood up and left.
Ketheric Thorm was dead.
And with his death, new life was breathed into the shadow cursed lands, the first in a century. Tav smiled as the sun shone on her face, a glowing tree sprouting on where once was nothing. The land would heal.
The attack on Moonrise Towers had also brought new revelations. The truth about the Absolute had unfolded in front of them. The chosen of the dead three - Orin, Gortash and Ketheric - were in control of an elder brain, and had a planned attack towards Baldur’s Gate, which would have happened if the Apostle of Myrkul hadn’t been brought down.
With one nether stones in hand, the party had two new targets to strike before they could be rid of the tadpoles for once and all.
Tav’s mind wandered towards Raphael. Before her infection, her patron had sent her on a mission: Discover what Enver Gortash, the boy who had escaped Raphael’s claws, was up to. She hadn’t understood then what he meant but now, the picture was clearer and many questions had arised.
Tav had a distinct feeling that very soon she would get her answers.
