Intro Post!💀🦇🕸🕯
Hey there! Figured I'd finally make one of these in case anyone who stumbles on this blog wonders what it's all about.
As it says in my blog description, this is an online space where I can compile and organize imagery, info, and anything else that inspires me related to the novel I'm developing. At least that was the original motivation for making this, but I'm definitely wanting to post some original content surrounding the story and the characters in it soon! This imaginary world has been obsessing me for a few years now, and I'm honestly chomping at the bit to share it with others.
What you'll see on here:
Images related to: gothic lit, the regency period in Europe/Britain, the late 16th/early 17th century, some earlier 18th century, ancient and prehistoric cultures, paganism, the occult, witchcraft, fairies, folklore, the countryside/forests, autumn, Halloween, demons/devils, romantic fashion, screenshots and gifs from films, illustrations/other artists' art that inspires me, and any other random pic that speaks to me or that gives me an idea even vaguely related to the story.
Text posts relating to: all the same subjects above, plus quotes from poetry and literature, other stories that inspire me, and writing advice posts/memes.
Hopefully soon: posts introducing my characters and sharing concept art, ideas, research I've done, who knows what else??
***Content warning for some imagery that may be disturbing (as can be expected, I guess, from a horror aesthetic/theme).***
What the novel's about:
It's [going to be] a gothic/dark fantasy/folk horror/historical fiction novel set in regency Britain and centering around the concept of Halloween and its origins/meaning. Think Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell meets Over the Garden Wall. Kinda. Characters include a bratty aspiring sorcerer, a demonic changeling who wants to be human, a witch, a sin eater, and a handsome devil. Over the course of the plot the question of whether the spirit realm(s) and mortal world should be kept separate will be a source of conflict.
I've had some aspects of this story/characters in my head since I was 14, so it's super special to me!
About me:
I'm an artist, writer, and musician. This is my first time trying to write anything as involved as a novel. I'm having loads of fun with it, though. I love music and reading and history, particularly fashion history, and anything related to the supernatural. The title of my blog is a reference to a song by Echo & the Bunnymen (though I think it's actually an inaccurate lyric :P ).
Ficton books I've been reading lately: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles books, Edgar Allan Poe short stories
Nonfiction books I've been reading: The Devil and All His Works by Dennis Wheatley, Celtic Mythology by Philip Freeman, The Making of Victorian Values by Ben Wilson, Occult Features of Anarchism by Erica Lagalisse, Halloween by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne
Some musical artists I'm into recently: Cranes, Kate Bush, The The, The Smiths, Fiona Apple, Alex G, Caroline Polachek, Imogen Heap, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Pinback, Steeleye Span, The Cleaners From Venus, Suzanne Vega, The Garden, Jessica Pratt
Visual Artists I've been thinking about lately: Edward Gorey, Aubrey Beardsley, Nicole Rodrigues, Francisco de Goya, Leonora Carrington, Brian Froud, Wendy Froud, Willam Blake, Edvard Munch, Harry Clarke
Some of my favorite films: The Witch, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, The Wicker Man (original), Meshes of the Afternoon, Days of Heaven, The Thief and the Cobbler, The Masque of the Red Death
Regardless of why you're here, I sincerely hope you enjoy browsing around, and feel free to say hi! :) I would love to link up with other writers on here and make some new pals. Also feel free to like this post and I'll give you a follow!

Hello, all!
I'm EM Abatis, and I make words. This is my designated professional account, for my very serious not-at-all silly poetry and original fiction. (Maybe a couple reviews, too, if I'm so inclined.) I'll also reblog things that inspire me, whether it be poetry, visual art, music, or thousand-word infodumps about the bronzed cowbird. I'll tag my stuff with "my poetry" or "my fiction" and other people's stuff with "look! art!!!"
My work sometimes dips into dark or adult subject matter, but I've never written something that couldn't feasibly be read to a high school class. That being said, I'll tag possible triggers, even if the poem is vague and obscure about it, as it usually is.
I tend to write short, experimental things. Poetic inspirations include Gertrude Stein (especially Tender Buttons), Douglas Kearney (especially Patter), William Blake, Emily Dickinson, and many others I can't think of at the moment.
Real reactions to my work include "I have no idea what just happened, but I loved it," and "That was so funny - was that supposed to be funny?" and "You're like the reincarnation of Edgar Allen Poe, except as an alien." If that sounds like your jam, stick around! If you have questions about my process, or anything else really, please feel free to ask! 🦇
My instagram is em_abatis though I don't post there often and don't really know how the site works. I'm much more comfy on Tumblr.
My current big fiction project is a middle grade/children's/whatever chapter book about existentialist philosophy, the limitations of language, and grief, which I'm tentatively titling "What Dahlia Knows", but I'll tag anything about it with "the icy wip" Intro Here
I'm also working on a short story collection about monsters in everyday settings (Masterpost Here), something I've been calling "skeleton collect-a-thon,"(Intro Here) a "Strawberry Shortcake-meets-DnD" fantasy novel, and a weird literary post-apocalypse called "On Scene." (Intro Here)

🦇⚰️ for the ask game! :) <3
ok so for blayke and sephi.
blayke was spesifically made to be a companion/boytoy to sephi, and hes. basically a failed supersoldier. anyway blayke’s entire purpose in life is to be with sephi, and sephi didnt rlly like that at first, but when he saw how much blayke cared about him and how he saw him as human and not a weapon of mass destruction, they became inseperable. their trope would probably be like. boss x underling or something. but without the fucked up power dynamics even though those are literally baked into the pairing for angst purposes
for BlakeShot (blake oneshot) and Plight, Blakeshot lives in an apartment near the cafe Plight canonically frequents, and caught feels for him the first time he saw him. he basically became a stalker(???), only learning info about Plight through convorsations between him and the barista. they only canonically get together on screen in the Solstice route, mainly because Blakeshot didnt wanna leave Plight alone while the world was ending. Their trope is probably just no energy x too much energy, with Plight having no energy and Blakeshot having too much energy.
i dont have a self insert for pokemon bc im a fictive of Gold and thats the only reason i selfship with Silver (i have romantic memories with him)

🦇 WIP Weekend! 🦇
The weather here is shit so I'm spending my entire long weekend getting ahead on my WIPS! Honestly i'm okay with it, even if i'd prefer to be writing next to a sparkling body of water.
‡ Rules ‡
In a reblog (or new post w/ rules attached), post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.
Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to post!
After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can’t share from (for example, an event fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.
That’s it! You can invite others to join in, or just post. If you tag me in your post, I will send you an ask request!
‡ WIPs ‡
the it was all just a dnd campaign au (new!)
PSE aka Sad Eddie
Anita Blake - Guilty Pleasures but its steddie
‡ Snippet ‡
from - life is a game(and true love is a trophy)
Eddie shook his head. “I already told you man, his parents are loaded. I’m sure they left no stone unturned. What could we possibly do that they haven't already tried?”
“For starters, Mike talked to Nancy. Did you know she dated Steve for a little while right around the time Will got lost in the woods?”
He had known that actually. In fact he vividly remembered catching the two of them in the boy’s bathroom that one time. He’d never thought about it in reference to Steve’s disappearance though. The couple had broken up several months before it happened.
“Yea, okay. So, they dated. What’s that got to do with anything?”
“I'm not sure if it does, but the police never questioned her. Mike said she was willing to talk to us about him, if you want.”
Eddie couldn’t believe he was actually considering this, but he couldn’t deny the fact that he was intrigued to learn more about Steve. Even if it didn’t lead to any answers about where he had gone.
“You know what? Fuck it. Let's do it” Eddie declared, slamming his now empty cup down on the table for emphasis.
“Language! I am a child!.” Dustin teased, in a perfect impersonation of his mother.
“Shut it, nerd.”
“You literally play D&D with teenagers! Who’s the nerd now?!”
No pressure tags @manda-panda-monium @dreamwatch @every-aj-needs-an-angel and anyone else who wants to play!

And if he sometimes found himself sneaking around the gym attached to the monster hunter library while Steve–no, Harrington swung around all sorts of dangerous and spiky implements in a training regimen designed to put all his rippling muscles on very athletic display, well, Eddie told himself he was studying up. In the unlikely event that Harrington did turn on him, of course. It was the smart thing to do.
Eddie had zoned out thinking of said training when he heard car doors close outside. Snapped out of his daydream, Eddie's head twitched towards the noise, but Max said, “It’s just Steve and Robin,” so he relaxed back into the couch.
When the front door shut a little too hard, though, even the kids were suddenly wary. Steve and Robin walked in looking pale, though Steve was streaked with dirt and had a grim clench to his jaw. He hurried upstairs while Robin drifted into the living room, and taking a cue from their demeanour, Dustin got up to turn the TV off. “What happened?” he asked.
Won't tag anyone this time bc I'm tired and I'm sure everyone's already been tagged. xD (But if you see this, rebloggin' would be much appreciated!!)

a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

Advice to Work on Yourself 🤸🏿♀️ in July 2022: Taurus
4 Swords - Ace of Pentacles - 2 Cups
Regarding: 6 Cups
Because of 6 Cups, I’m not sure what tense this story is. Some present, some past. There is a situation here where you are taking a break from love altogether. You do seem to have options, more than one even, but something is telling you that none of them are right for you. You want 4 Wands, and 2 Cups, you want Ace of Pentacles. Something solid, genuine, a stable foundation that’s going to last a long time, and whatever options are in all of these 7 Cups aren’t doing it for you. Either you’ve decided to hold back from all of them and you’re being too hard on yourself about this, or you already have before, or you’re being told to now. In any story, this is the right thing for you and you know it. You know what you want, and deserve, and you’re not about to settle. You’ve probably been hurt before and need time to heal as well. Or did. For most of you, this is for a single person.
In the case of someone in a relationship, this could be a warning that you need to stop spending money, something could be coming where you’ll need to dip into your savings, and with 6 Cups here it may be a repeat of a situation you’ve already seen before. In any story, Wheel of Fortune shows changes on the horizon that are more authentic to whatever it is you’ve left behind in the past.
Animal Oracle: Cat 🐱
“It’s time to strike out on your own and relinquish your overdependency on others.”
It’s so easy to slip into a comfortable dependency with anything or anyone, from simple dependencies that can be healthy and restorative (such as daily exercise) to destructive and hard-core dependencies, such as an addiction. You may find yourself so totally hooked on another person that you lose yourself, always turning to that individual to either make decisions for you or to validate your own. This can apply to organizations and institutions as well. These dependencies that you’re most familiar with are most likely born out of habit rather than conscious choice. To make truly autonomous decisions, don’t get caught up in the polarities of being dependent or independent. Instead, make those choices from a place where you maintain your own authority and power, and accept 100 percent responsibility for those choices and their consequences.
Now is the time to review the people and things upon which you’re excessively and habitually dependent: Step back from them, identify the areas where you need to make some adjustments, and act accordingly. Practice setting boundaries, asking for what you want, and making decisions based on your own internal authority and autonomy.
Artist Oracle: WILLIAM BLAKE
- Hell is hypocrisy on Earth.
- Vision requires not sight but spirit.
- Madness in life, genius in death.
Advice:
- Make a Time Capsule
- Learn Self Compassion
Charms:
Star ⭐️ on Ace of Pentacles shows healing and true wish fulfillment in this Ace, which is the best Ace to have to build for the long term. Make A Time Capsule shows you being very aware of time and it’s passing already, you’re not interested in casual dating or situationships, you want a forever kind of love, home, job, you name it, and you want it to be stable and built on a solid foundation.
Butterfly 🦋 on Learn Self Compassion shows transformation between whatever was before and whatever is now, so much that you can see yourself as an entirely different person and so you should be able to see things more objectively, even your own role. Solely for the purpose of forgiving yourself, that is.
Bat 🦇 on William is impeccable intuition and you can just pat yourself on the back for knowing what you need without having to “know” anything. Your gut told you what’s right and you listened to it, there’s more to knowledge than what’s black or white, and you have the gift of seeing beyond what’s visibly there. It’s a message of confirmation.
