Such a fun idea!! I freaking LOVE giving the states real jobs it’s so fun to me

New York does most of the cooking and California is usually making drinks. Wash is that kid you’ll see doing homework in the corner table when you walk in. California has to flatter New York whenever he forgets an order. Mass and Coco run the bakery next door. Californias beach bum energy compared to New Yorks punk and Wash’s grunge looks is always a fun contrast.

And @aceasadhd had the fun add-on that Al and Tex run the carnicería or butcher shop in town too :D

-If NY was a teacher he would totally be a chorus teacher and the part-time drama director. (Mass would teach English and they would totally kiss in between periods)

-Each of the OG 13 cannot see the states as their current age so they treat them like children

-I have realllyy like complex lore for like each of NY’s cities/places like Long Island, NYC, Albany, Buffalo, and others. (I’m willing to share but idk if u guys even wanna know 😭)

-Texas has a full-MAGA truck, Five Flags saying “Trump 2024” and “Fuck Joe Biden” and is absolutely decked out in Trump stickers. It is also a ford f-150 bc what else could he drive.

-^Cal would probably just have a single sticker saying “Harris-Walz” bc he isn’t all messy like that 🤧 (he is, but he keeps it on the down-low)

-Jersey sometimes finds New York sitting on the bathroom floor eating cheese and crackers. (He will just start throwing crackers at him until he leaves)

-I feel like New York’s reaction to literally anything kind would be “ew” but in like a weird flustered way. Not like a asshole kinda way, more of like a awkward teenager.

-California would emphasize his words with “uh” at the end. “No-uh” or “Go away-uh” like the valley girl he is.

Love the fact California is split. Bakersfield is not the worst (I am biased because Dwight Yoakam)

In my opinion: The worst city in Michigan is Grand Rapids, the worst city in Arizona is Tempe, the worst city in Massachusetts is Boston, and the worst city in New York is NYC (this is purely a joke because I have family in all these cities. I actually really love my family)

Socal and NorCal are two different states and there for two different people confirmed. Thank you for map, map is brain fuel

Trying to think of some scenarios for their first meeting! This is probably on the more cheesy OOC side but I’d like to think they initially bonded because New York actually followed through on his promise and got to know California as a person instead of focusing on the shallow things, like everyone else did.

More rambling and alt text under the cut:

Not to get too deep into the history, but…

New York at this time had a reputation much like California does today; a bastion of progressive-for-the-era ideals— including women’s suffrage, abolitionism, labor rights, and various new and experimental social movements. There was a lot of immigration and urban poverty. I think New York definitely has a soft, compassionate side, and he saw the danger California was in— growing too quickly for his own good and being exploited for his resources— and saw something of himself in that. Initially it was a protective, big brother type instinct, but it (quickly) grew to be something more.

I feel like all of mine have probably been said before, but nonetheless, I'll give you everything I've got off the top of my head

the easy ones are ADHD and dyslexic florida, dyscalculic nevada (see: counting votes video), and I will tentatively suggest DID texas- this headcanon is often misused, but it's a good idea on it's own

as for physical disabilities, I'm always a sucker for the dakotas having either identical disabilities, or inverse disabilities (e.g. south dakota not having a right arm and north dakota not having a left arm). gonna have to write something about that someday.

also, I don't usually incorporate this into my own fics, but I've seen deaf/hard of hearing michigan floating around every now and then, and, well, I just love michigan, so I can always get behind that. deaf kentucky is also a thought I like to think

and I'm not sure if anyone's suggested this before, but I've been considering, perhaps, california with tourette's. I don't have exact headcanons for what his tics would be- I'm thinking more motor than phonic, but that's as far as I've gotten

Appearance hcs

Colorado has white hair. He didn't dye it. It grew like that! It reaches to his shoulder and is straight. He'll dye blue streaks into his hair occasionally!

He's 5'7, pretty average height !

He has a ton of scars from skiing accidents and hiking accidents. He was ashamed of them at first but has grown to love them. He says it adds to his character.

Her eyes are brown with tints of yellow :-)

His fingers are fucked up. By that I mean his finger nails are chewed down, lots of hangnails and picked skin

Relationship hcs

The other four corners are his siblings. He gets along with New Mexico the best. His relationship with Utah is pretty strained due to the opposite life paths they've taken. His relationship with Arizona is just okay.

Best friends with Oregon. They smoke weed together pretty often. Also movie nights? Twice a week. They always watch bad movies on purpose to make fun of and giggle over the WHOLE time

He used to date Michigan. It didn't end bad it was very very mutual and they still get along to this day. Sometimes Michigan will tag along for skiing

Him and California are frenemies. They'll get along half the time and hate each other the other half. Their rant sessions together last hours and the next day they act like it didn't happen

She likes Nevada! Like he is DOOOWN BAD. I don't see them ever becoming anything but Colorado is head over heels

-they sleep in the order of this: FL-LA-NY-CA. They’re all squeezed together, NY lays his head on CA’s chest, FL and LA both intertwined with each other. Sometimes NY gets tangled in as well.

-The chaos quad??

^NY: He’s one of the influencers of FL’s behavior. He will stop it if it gets too out of hand, but he usually participates gladly.

^FL: OG chaos creator, NY’s influencing only pushes him further and CA’s pleads to stop don’t mean anything to him, but he will listen to LA if he tells him to stop.

^CA: The “smart” one who worries “too much” to FL. Always afraid of anyone getting hurt or them ending up in jail.

^LA: OG influencer, always help FL with his insane ideas one way or another. Tries to calm CA down if he gets too worked up

-I could imagine these four pulling a heist

-I also could imagine Florida continue to mistake NY as German and he gets so pissed

-All equally touch deprived, so many hugs and kisses and love shown through physical touch

-Florida purposely tries to make New York angry. The problem is, New York knows this and he will be unphased, staring blankly at him as he continues to say things that usually make him livid.

-LA primarily makes dinner for the other 3. He knows what everyone likes and doesn’t, and makes sure to keep it out or to add more to whatever it is

-CA sends love letters. He’s still upset that people send “meaningless” pictures nowadays and continues to write love letters to the other 3 states. They mostly receive 3 letters per month. maybe per week.

-NY drags them around his city occasionally. I could imagine him stopping constantly to say hi to everyone so they’re there for hourssss. FL and LA have a game counting how many people he talks or greets.

-FL will make fun of them, lovingly of course. He’s much softer with CA bc he takes it to heart and LA bc he’s his best friend, but with NY its WAR.
