do you think dany knew what she was doing when she hatched her dragons or was it just an accident?

oh yes i think she knew exactly what she was doing. the magic in her blood and the eggs and the fire was speaking to her, coming through in her dragon dreams—especially that last fever dream after her miscarriage. i think she knew it was possible before because she could feel the eggs stirring and the magic waking up (and she was already connecting with drogon and drawing strength from him), but it was mirri maz duur who actually taught her how to do it.

i love that what she’s actually doing is never explicitly stated, yet everything she’s doing saying and thinking gives her away. like she swears to jorah she doesn’t intend to die with drogo, she directly compares herself to aegon, she places the eggs on the pyre and tells mirri maz duur that she’s going to take her life because only death can pay for life, etc., but the closest dany ever comes to directly saying it is when it’s done and the last dragon is about to hatch:

like calling herself mother of dragons and then calling them her children is unequivocal, but before that grrm’s building the suspense and creating this heady wild momentum. it feels very similar to reading her wake the dragon fever dream, and provides such a great insight into her character. the space in the narrative where she doesn’t acknowledge what she’s doing or exactly why she’s doing it is where the magic lives, and it also gives her a place to hide any lingering uncertainty or fear, while still making it clear that she understands what’s happening: that she is in fact making it happen.

but like speaking of accidents, i’m obsessed with the difference between dany’s success and egg’s flop tragedy. she uses her husband’s funeral pyre, the husband whose life she traded her son’s for, to wake the dragons (including herself) and creates life from death. aegon v tried to hatch dragon eggs during rhaegar’s birth (the child he and jaehaerys ii traded rhaella’s happiness and agency for) and instead made a pyre of summerhall and most of his family. rhaegar was the last dragon, born in fire, and now it’s her—but it was always her and he always had to die. “the face within was her own.” crazy. insane.

i’m sure people have pointed this out before, but the magic here always makes me think of this line from the last unicorn: “real magic can never be made by offering up someone else’s liver. you must tear out your own, and not expect to get it back.” grrm’s use of magic is very similar, just as the unicorn and dany are similar, and i think it’s very possible that other attempts to hatch dragons in the past failed in part because whoever was trying didn’t understand this (and also because they were a. men and b. not daenerys lol). magic has a price, and it’s always high. this is one of the hardest lessons dany has to learn, and she thanks mirri maz duur for it in the end, because she understands that it had to be her own child, her womb, her husband, her sun and his fire that’s really hers burning someone’s life away—and this whole time, the entire book up until this point, she’s been cracking open like the moon, like the eggs on the pyre, and then she joins them in the fire.

Okay, so King has his pretty wings, so I'd see him top to give him full room to stretch out and cover them both. However, I don't see Katakuri bottoming for him. I think Kata would soft dom King while King hard subs Kata. Lots of degradation from King to Katakuri, where Katakuri would only give praise and adoration to King.

I could see King just spurting filth down at Kata like: "Oh, if only your Mama could see you now, beneath me all sweaty and panting like a wounded animal. So pathetic. So weak. So small." Which would earn him a particularly hard thrust up to have him gasp, with Katakuri retorting, "You know very well I'm not small, and you take me so well, my sweet."

Katakuri gives so well, and King refuses to return the favor. It's the only time King cannot give degradation to Katakuri, especially when the minister of flour does that one thing with his tongue that he loves so much. King turns into a whimpering mess, a puddle of quivering lust: muffling his moans into his palm while he looks down into the intense eyes of his lover. Katakuri offers him a smile with his mouth very full, his teeth poking out from the corners of his curled lips.

So my hot take, King would top Kata, but King would be the one taking Kata.

Lowkey Lord Cox best character - imagine, you are just sitting around, it’s just another tuesday, and uh oh here comes a dragon that can’t be good! And the prince! Three princes?!? You get offered a marriage to a high family, two dragons hatch in your keep, then the keep gets set on fire. There is apparently a grand conspiracy that’s been right under your nose for months. One of the princes gets kidnapped and you are faced with the very real possibility of becoming harrenhall 2.0. Over the course of two days.

He handled that so much better than I ever could have. I think I would have cried.

Lord Cox is truly a legend. This man had an hour to throw something together fit for the king's brother, whose temper is legendary, and his traumatized children, and he didn't take any half measures.

He scoured the town for anything with the sigil of House Targaryen, immediately ordered the finest sweets from the best bakery for breakfast because if there's one thing children love it's sugar, remembered from some passed-down story that Targaryens prefer their baths hot, stole the three best beds in the house, leaving some of his own family forced to pile three to a bed for each remaining, kickstarted the investigation into the docks so that Prince Daemon could have his answers by the morning...

And all of that BEFORE the second attempted kidnapping and the heart attack of Daemon's threat. He threw together a caravan in record time, and when Daemon demanded two-thirds of his men-at-arms and one of his two knights as escort, he gamely expanded that caravan.

Lord Cox did better than probably 80% of lords from greater houses could manage with better resources and lead time.

Teenager daenerys sold as a child bride “owned” the slaves that her husband gave her… ok…

She made mistakes in her breaking of the slave trade, but her “profit” from the tax on those selling themselves back into slavery is not used for her own gain, so it’s not really a profit… she is not perfect

Daenerys’s hate of slavery is not just sometjing to make the audience like her, it is an intrinsic part of her storyline and the plot of asoiaf as a whole

when will dany stans acknowledge the intersection of gender, race and class, as well as the intersection of oppression? yes, daenerys was sold as a child bride. yes, daenerys owned slaves. did she have a choice in either matter? no. did she benefit nonetheless from the slaves she did not want to own? yes. is the entire blame for the system of slavery and abusive practices that upheld her khalasar to be placed on the shoulders of a 13-year-old girl? no. should she be criticised for taking power forcefully in slavers' bay and then not bothering to learn how to govern properly and ensure a peaceful transition to a slavery-free society? yes.

is this an important puzzle piece that could help us understand how daenerys will soon react to opposition in westeros, aka when the going gets tough instead of relying on negotiations & compromises & power-sharing i shall fall back on my fire-breathing monsters, squash my enemies violently and 'burn cities to the ground'? also yes.

it's like..... you're almost there.

can you for real stop for one minute and ask yourself why you are so willing to shill for someone whose solution (to the political problems she creates for herself) is violence? i don't understand this aversion to any kind of democratic element being introduced in westeros that might curtail the sovereign's power (or the power other feudal lords have over people). have you ever considered that westeros doesn't even have a parliamentary body? do you imagine daenerys will pull a john lackland when she arrives? does she really strike you as the power-sharing type?

think for a moment of the logistics of dany even getting to westeros in the first place with only two more books to go. homegirl has to sail soon for any of that to happen. there will be no time for her to grow into this wise political theorist you imagine her to be, she has to be gone NOW. which means she has or will have to have the personality of someone who doesn't REALLY care all that much about solving the political unrest she created. there will have to be a moment in the winds of winter when she goes "fuck it!" and decides to claim her "birthright".

and this is not to say that slavery never mattered to her as a concept or that she doesn't truly, deep down, think it's wrong, only that she will rationalize her selfish desires into convincing herself she has done all she can and thus wash her hands of this business. why? from a doylist perspective, because the plot requires it to happen NOW. from a watsonian perspective, because politicking is too difficult, it's too boring and she doesn't like it. "dragons plant no trees". dany is good at conquering, not at governing.
