Hello I've now played Pikmin 3 and I'm beside myself with how Nintendo keeps doing Olimar like this.

After Olimar pays off President's whole debt (and then some) in Pikmin 2 he is... back on PNF-404 in Pikmin 3. Immediately. Like immediately. Because the President lost all their money again and he's sent Olimar and Louie back to PNF-404 again exactly the same as happens to Olimar in Pikmin 2 and this time there is absolutely an undercurrent of violence in Olimar's vlogs and logs. He WANTS bad things to happen to his boss.

But he's too polite and too composed so he's just keeping his cortisol levels down with elaborate fantasies of class revolution, and the mental countdown of how many days until he can get the FUCK off this planet and get home to his family for real. He was ship-wrecked and left for dead for 30 days in Pikmin 1 and fought and bled and killed for his own survival to make it back to his planet only to then IMMEDIATELY be sent back by his shitty awful boss to the planet for another ~30 days in Pikmin 2 (he hasn't seen his family yet) and then IMMEDIATELY is sent back in Pikmin 3 and he wants to go home. He wants to go home. His daughter sends him a message asking if he even lives with them anymore. I'm fucking beside myself.

THIS would all be... okay, at least, if Olimar actually got to go home. But No The Fuck He Doesn't. Because at the end of his mission he's kidnapped by concentrated pikmin nightmare fuel in the form of the game's final boss. Some non-corporeal omnipresent monstrosity which has kidnapped Olimar as a keepsake. A pet. A toy? Which allows Olimar just the chance to attempt an escape day after day before snatching him back and dragging him back to his eternal jail cell. The man who was just about to go home and finally see his family after 3 games.

You find his logs and he's just losing his mind, slowly. He knows he's never escaping. He's losing his will to try. He has nightmares of the pikmin turning on him. Louie's not coming back for him and the President isn't coming back for him.

Pikmin 1 is horror as Olimar is stranded alone with no one but himself to save him. His life support is damaged and he has only 30 days to repair his ship to get home, lest he die in the poisonous atmosphere of this planet. And it's horrifying but at least. At least. He had his own power to save himself. He makes progress steadily over the month. He has reason to keep his hope alive.

Pikmin 3 robs him of that. There is nothing under his own power he can do to escape the Plasm Wraith. His pikmin have all been killed. He's in an unwinnable Saw trap. And this time his life support system isn't damaged. It's the only thing worse than damaged - it's completely functional.

Given that, playing as the Koppaite trio, there is no time limit to save Olimar, I can only conclude Olimar's suit is fully functional this time. He has no food, no water, no chance to ever change out of his suit, but it keeps him alive. He's the Plasm Wraith's prisoner for as long as that suit will keep him alive. Indefinitely, maybe. Unless he could work up the nerve to remove his helmet himself and just end it...

But he doesn't. Day after day he tries to escape until he doesn't have the strength anymore. His suit forces him to sleep more and more, against his will, as a life preservation method. So he's forced to fade in and out of consciousness as this thing's prisoner. And this is forever. Until he dies.

The Koppaite trio rescuing him is pure coincidence. They were on PNF-404 for reasons completely divorced from Olimar. They should never have cared who he was or where he was. Olimar just happened to come across their warp drive key when they crashed, and he picked it up, right before the Plasm Wraith took him. They find him for the warp drive key. The Koppaite trio weren't supposed to save Olimar. No one was supposed to save Olimar.

And how. Awful. Because this time people KNOW Olimar is on PNF-404. President is back home on Hocotate and knows he's lost contact with Louie and Olimar. He could send help but he doesn't. He could COME to help but he doesn't. Olimar isn't waywardly alone this time. He's abandoned. And abandoned by the man who forced him into this danger.

And depending how well you play, and how many fruits you get as the Koppaite trio, a normal run is probably 20-30 days for them BEFORE you rescue Olimar. He was taken soon after they landed. So a month. Another month. Of Olimar stranded on this planet. Worse than ever before, as he's nothing but the mouse being played with by this world's cruelest cat. He hasn't been allowed to take off his space suit for a month... After ~30 days of Pikmin 1 and ~30 of Pikmin 2 and now ~30 of Pikmin 3. His daugher thinks he doesn't live with them anymore...

And then... okay and then... the Koppaite trio rescue him... They offer to bring him home. And Olimar's beside himself because he never thought he was getting off this planet. Someone's shown kindness to him for the first time in 3 games and it takes him by absolute surprise.

He and Louie get home.

AND THE PRESIDENT CALLS THEM IDIOTS FOR LOSING THEIR SHIP AND SENDS THEM IMMEDIATELY BACK TO GET THE SHIP

THE PLASM WRAITH IS STILL THERE AND ALIVE.

IT IS LEGALLY AND ETHICALLY ALLOWED FOR OLIMAR TO KILL HIS BOSS.

Assorted pikmin headcanons that I might end up deleting bc I definitely haven’t already posted enough today

• Most Hocotatians can’t grow facial hair. Those who can are greatly envied (even if it’s just a few scraggly hairs like the president)

• Hocotate is mostly desert. Because of this, hocotatians generally don’t need as much water as others.

• Yonny is. Extremely in love with dingo. But he still tries to be a good wingman when dingo’s trying to talk to shepherd cause even if he’s insane he’s a good friend

• Louie tries to zone out when olimar’s telling him “stories” (which are more just olimar’s train of thought) but ends up subconsciously retaining it all. He remembers more about olimar than olimar himself.

• Collin actually has social anxiety despite being the comms guy, ironically the only way he’s found that he can calm himself is to never stop talking. So he yaps. A lot.

• Yonny’s tried to tell dingo before that his disliking of dogs probably stems from some form of ptsd from the time he thought he was being attacked during a rescue. Dingo just bragged about it because he thought having trauma made him sound more “badass.” It did not. He was very confused when he got sympathy and not admiration.

• Olimar gets frustrated with Louie very easily, but keeps it hidden because Louie gets chastised by the other employees and the president a lot and olimar wants to be the one to help him instead of just yelling at him.

• Hocotate freight, despite being tasked with large shipping jobs, is a rather small company with barely any employees. There’s pretty much no experience needed other than a basic pilot’s license to get a job there because the president is so desperate for workers

• Louie doesn’t even have a pilot license. He only managed to get hired because his nana convinced the president to hire him because of his family’s lineage of renowned pilots.

• His nana didn’t even ask Louie before getting him hired. He was looking to get a fry cook job at a restaurant nearby to save up for culinary school. He just went with it because he didn’t want to disappoint her

• Collin is aroace. He doesn’t know it, he just thinks he’s “too busy” for sex and romance (am I just saying that bc I’m projecting onto him nooooo I would neeever do that)

• Koppaites generally age physically slower than most. Giyans? What’s it called uhh. People from giya tend to physically age faster. They both have roughly the same life expectancy, though

• it’s a common practice on most civilized planets for the people to dye their hair, as they all share the trait of usually greying quickly. Only hocotatians don’t do this, as they over time have developed hair that retains its color longer—although they have less of it

• Louie hates space travel. He gets motion sickness easily. Olimar, on the other hand, loves it, and likes to do tricks with his ship when flying like spinning around. Somehow that’s never been the cause of a crash, the worst that’s happened was just louie feeling sick

• dingo has low iron levels. I have nothing more to add it is just definitely true

• whenever Louie’s on pnf-404 by himself, he survives the creatures by just ignoring them. Turns out a lot of them aren’t inherently violent or have a taste for hocotatian. The ones that do attack can be defeated easily by giving them poisonous plants

• Many of the planets are more of dwarf planets, if even that. Only hocotate, koppai, Giya, and pnf 404 are larger. Most of them are tiny and in the same solar system, making them almost more akin to different countries or continents than entirely different planets

i use "human" as a generic catch-all term for all of the alien species, like hocotatians, koppaites, giyans, whatever. mostly because i'm lazy 😭 and because actual humans or humanity will almost guaranteed never be relevant in any of the art or stories i make

if a wraith wants to eat you, it'd be a mercy for it to kill you first. being alive and having your flesh, tissue, muscles and bones fizzled away into biomass is an agonizing process. you are being eaten alive after all. hopefully the pain knocks you unconscious quickly...

corbin didn't have to eat anyone! he's half human, so he naturally develops a human "disguise". he visually takes after dingo quite a lot lol

i was talking with a friend about why it is that we find the hocotate ship and Olimar's interactions so great compared to any other dynamic he has in all the games, and it sorta answered itself over time.

I think it was in a vc that they mentioned that it would be very funny if Collin had a single clue to how scummy Olimar can be and not "a really forgiving guy who gets pushed around and has serious mental problems but passive". Like even with Louie- Olimar sees to it that he apologizes to him for snapping or even asking the forgiveness of others on his behalf. With his own boss he contemplates on the fact that if he had died then maybe work could have been better for others around him and it is his fault for surviving. Even with his own family he would never fault them for any hardships and somehow always pin the blame on himself. All the cured leaflings described him to be kind and determined to save them despite being taken over by the pikmin parasite. Even the koppaites feel sorry for him despite the stereotypes dividing them at first

But you know who he doesnt regret being as scummy towards ? THE FUCKING HOCOTATE SHIP !! that ship doesnt coddle him or pity him in the same way others do and instead sasses back with the same energy. He is soo genuine and transparent when talking about that ship its so good to read those two interact because you dont NOT see that with anyone else

hey so when pikmin 3 was new and i hyperfixated on it i memorized the koppaite alphabet and used it, now in pikmin 4 some of the pictures on olimar's log feature a cursive version of that alphabet. i'm doing my best to translate it but i cannot figure out entry #69 (nice), anyone here good at this who knows?

note: don't tell me any translations for any other entries, i want to figure out everything i can about this game on my own first. i am asking this for entry 69 only (pictured below)

Assorted Louie and Alph being roommates au doodles

I have no clue how they end up as roommates, but they become so used to each other no one else wants to be the other's roommate. Alph has random fits of motivation at 3 in the morning and most people would wake up to the sounds of an engineer at work. Not Louie. He's sleeping like a rock. Alph gets busy trying to introduce the tech he got from PNF-404 to other science people that he forgets to-is so busy to get stuff like groceries. Cue him asking Louie to get some for him -> Louie ends up cooking for both of them -> Louie has a nice time testing out recopies on what hocotatians can eat vs what koppaites can eat.

Louie is just vibing. He's living with a cute boy who not only pays the grocery bill but never asks for him to be talkative. He likes listening to this guy ramble about computers while he eats.

Brittany and Charlie think they are dating and for the longest time they aren't. It's only after years of them co-existing together that feelings pop up-but by then everyone that knows the two of them think they are just keeping their relationship a secret. It's not helped by whenever Alph is invited to fancy dinners his plus one is Always his roommate. He invites Louie to family holidays and vise versa. Everyone is Live Slug Reaction and know what they are except for themselves lmao

Of course! Thank you so much for taking interest! I'm truly fascinated by how far these logs reach— Where are you from? I've never come across one who can't recognise the writing, until beginning work on this blog (and I do apologise for my spotty appearances! We are making so many new discoveries; they threaten to devour my attention. . .)

The common script shared between our clusters is called such for a reason! How can we name an animal without using a language that we all know, or an alphabet that we can all read? Even beyond the sciences, our daily lives are woven between dozens of planets with their own unique cultures, so the common script is used in grocery stores, on the names of our ships, and even on our birth certificates.

In blue, our standard font. I've written in print on the right, and cursive (in red), below. We traditionally combine some letters due to certain planets lacking phonetic similarity, so you'll see some interchangeable lettering.

. . . Maybe the problem is that my handwriting is bad? I should start using print, again. How dreadful; I thought it looked more professional, that way.

— nearly nothing is known about carp. he is very, very quiet, and mimics the posture and behavior he sees in others in order to better blend in with groups of people. with the appearance of the suit he ends up sticking out regardless, not unlike the bulbmin

— speculation from others on their home planet yields a lot of different questions. some see the rounded ears and assume they're a koppaite. some are convinced carp is ocoboan. it really depends on who you ask (unless you ask carp) (they will not answer)

— there's this frequent wide, lost look to their eyes. they're all glossy. he follows others around out of confusion, not seeming to recognize what's going on some of the time

I am very normal about the rescue corps so anyway I transcribed all of (as far as I’m aware) their casual dialogue on base. Too long to do it all in one post so I will split it up starting with Collin:

I recently asked Nelle about her experiences with that giant dog creature. Apparently, when she was first captured, it was quite playful. She said she didn’t feel like she was in any danger at all. That made me wonder if it was acting more aggressive and violent because it was being controlled by Louie.

There must be something about this planet that pulls ships in or causes machinery to malfunction. But wait. Come to think of it…why didn’t your ship crash, (player name)?

If you press (Y) while on the Area Select screen, you can see your current progress for every surface area and every cave. Be sure to keep an eye on your Status Reports while out in the field!

The captain has a special certification in Rescue Pup training. She’s also one of the few members of the Rescue Corps with the highest certificate ranking. I mean, she’s kind of…incredible.

Believe it or not, you can always count on Dingo. If you’re ever in a tough spot, he’ll show up to save you…probably.

Yonny may be a laid-back kind of guy, but he’s incredibly accomplished in the medical field.

He may not act the part, but Bernard is actually a veteran pilot. I heard that at the intergalactic travel company where he used to work, he piloted a 20,000-hour-long flight. That’s…long.

I was surprised to learn that Olimar is quite reticent in person, weren’t you? Though I must admit, he does have a certain air of gravitas about him.

I heard that Dobbs became a treasure hunter so he could help solve the poverty crisis back on his home planet. What a generous and noble pursuit! I never expected someone so intimidating to be so kind.

From what I can tell, Yorke really looks up to Dobbs. Somehow he always finds a way to bring him up in conversation.

Giyans, Ohrians, Hocotations, and Koppaites…How funny that there are so many planets represented here on this tiny, little nondescript ball of dirt floating in space.

Nelle comes across as quite aloof, doesn’t she? She doesn’t seem to pal around much with her crew either. You know what? I can respect a healthy work-life balance.

Koppaites are notoriously poor planners, but you can only judge something like that on an individual basis. Dobbs, for example, is pretty laid-back, while Yorke tends to plan ahead. Nelle, on the other hand, can be…pretty intense. Especially when the topic turns to food.

You never know what you’ll learn when you peruse your Tablet or talk to someone new around here.

nope, not something i've been asked before! i've discussed the first two's mains with Sleepy at least though so it's not like this is a foreign concept to me

Olimar would be a Splatling main (specifically Nautilus and/or Heavy Edit)

Louie,, Brush or Blasters. maybe the occasional Slosher too-oh my god these are just Big Man's weapon picks fuuuck. it's fine it's a very "having fun+playing" weapon set even if they're doing it in two different directions. i'm thinking Octobrush/Clash Blaster/Explosher

Collin is real "living beacon" type guy I think. very consistently remains alive even when no one else on the team is. pretty much exclusively does backlines, and mains Chargers and Splatlings. probably would want to main the Tenta Brella too.

Shepherd plays the Splatana Stamper Nouveau. could see her doing Rollers/Brushes too, but that in particular is calling to me. she's just got strong melee vibes i guess.

Russ is a Blaster main, no question. he misses the days where the Luna Blaster was OP, but still uses it anyways. he's also 🤏 this close from getting banned from competing in anything due to making some Grizzco Weapon-esque bullshit.

Dingo is a Dualie main, also no questions. probably Tetra Dualies specifically. he feels like the kind of guy who tries to dodge roll as much as physically possible. he'll also do Splatana Wiper from time to time. totally not to try and show off to Shepherd.

Yonny is an E-Liter main. no notes. he just is.

Bernard... is a hard one. semi-auto Shooters are kind of calling to me for him? not sure which one but . yeah

no clue what Oatchi and Moss would use because. oggys. but here's some Koppaite mains for funzies/to round things out:

Alph.... i think is a Shooter main. very much appreciates the versatility of the class. probably would love to study the meta but wouldn't pick weapons solely based on it, yknow.

Brittany is definitely a Squiffer girlie. she can do other Chargers fine, but that one's her favourite. she'd probably also like to crush people with a nice big Roller sometimes, but...

Charlie is 100% a Roller main. just look at him. the man talks about beating up the creatures of PNF-404 with his "steely fists" in 3DX's Piklopedia. of COURSE he's a roller main. he's probably big into the Dynamo Roller specifically.
