Ask For Angela: Barman!Gally x Reader

Barman!Gally who's working a double because his shank of a co-worker pulled a sicky.

Thirteen hours in, and two broken glasses under his belt, suddenly you're at the bar asking for Angela.

Shuck knows who that is but she doesn't work here.

You're looking perplexed, asking for her again with more determination, your gaze flickering behind you constantly.

He figures it's a prank and tells you to get lost.

"Please." You beg. "Angela. You know? Angela?" You lower your voice. "Don't you have the Angela thing here?"

You shut up when a guy comes to stand beside you, his arm snaking your waist.

Gally notices your shift in attitude, cocking an eyebrow as he pours someone else's order.

You're still looking his way. Eyes pleading. Doing your best to shuffle from your date's grip.

... oh. Angela.

"Angela wants to speak to you out back. Do you wanna come through?"

Gally opens the bar gate as he speaks.

You nod.

You try to shuffle through but your date isn't having it. He tells Angela to come out here if she's so desperate to talk to you.

Suddenly you look terrified.

Gally's working a double. He doesn't have the patience for this.

As your date takes hold of your arms to stop you getting free of him, Gally reaches across the counter.

Without a second thought, he bounces your date's head off the bar.

As other patrons shout and squeak in alarm, Gally escorts you through to the back.

He sits you down in the break room and grabs you a glass of water.

"Does that slinthead know where you live?"

Shaken by the events, you can only shake your head.

Gally orders you a taxi and sits with you in the back until it arrives, happy to let his co-workers take the flack for his absence.

He let's you out the back door when it arrives, and walks with you to the taxi to make sure you aren't followed.

"Take care of yourself. Make sure you block that guy, yeah?"

Gally feels uneasy sending you off alone, but he's got a job to do, and a mess to clean up back at the bar.

He doesn't expect to see you again.

Imagine his surprise a few days later when you show up at the bar with a bunch of flowers to say thank you.

Imagine his even bigger surprise when, on inspecting the gift, he finds a card with your phone number on it nestled amongst the flowers.

Well done Angela, you wonderful woman.

'I asked for Angela - they had no idea what I was talking about'

The Ask for Angela initiative, a scheme in place at thousands of venues nationwide, aims to provide a discreet lifeline for people who believe they are in danger

Those with such fears are advised to use the code word "Angela", to indicate to staff they need help

When a person mentions Angela to a staff member, they should immediately be taken to safety at a designated space inside the venue by a staff member and asked what support they need

"I tried to slink away and he was reeling me back," Annie says. "I wasn't giving him any signals - I was like, 'no, I'm not enjoying this'... I made it very clear that I was not interested. It was fight or flight in a very busy club.

"And when I got away he followed me. I felt a little bit threatened and a little bit vulnerable."

'It was embarrassing'

She adds: "I'd seen Ask for Angela posters in so many bars.

"I went into the toilet, saw the poster, and thought: 'Ah, there's an opportunity to get myself clear of the situation.'

"One thing I would say is that the poster does not tell you what to say exactly. Everyone knows to Ask for Angela but how you actually do it is not clear.

"I felt hopeful – I've got a discreet, easy way to extricate myself from this situation."

Annie says she was not sure exactly how to ask for Angela

"When I went to the bar, the guy appeared again and tried to order us both a drink.

"But while he was talking to the other bartender I said to a male bartender, who was in his early 20s: 'Is Angela there?'

"It was loud, but he looked at me totally puzzled. I don't know if he heard what I said. So I said it again: 'Is Angela there?'

"He just shrugged his shoulders and shook his head.

"The guy was still next to me but distracted enough – and I said: 'Please can you get me away from this guy? I'm feeling uncomfortable.'

The Ask for Angela scheme has received significant investment via public funds

"The bartender shouted to the guy I was trying to get away from to get his payment, or to ask what he wanted, and I was able to slip off and get back upstairs.

"It was embarrassing because I'd just been yelling 'Angela' in this man's face and he didn't know what was talking about.

"I was a bit angry because although I came out of the situation unscathed, it could have been very different.

"The expectation is that it's an easy, safe way to get yourself out of an unsafe situation - and it absolutely wasn't.

"It was a disaster.

"I ended up having to explain myself, potentially putting myself in further danger in a busy bar.

i’m at a restaurant and this is right in front of the front door

now i fully understand the need to have this, i’ve used things like it before when i’ve felt uncomfortable.

however, i think having it just… out in the open is kinda redundant.

like, if a woman is asking for angela then the man would be able to look at the poster and know exactly what’s going on.
