i love the concept of grian and martyn being so close during evo, and then afterwards not at all. martyn has a very strong distaste for the watchers, and feels almost betrayed by grian joining them. i can imagine them meeting again after so long and grian being so happy to see him, while martyn is just filled with absolute horror at the sight of him, all adorned in watcher garb and whatnot

I think theres a quiet unanswered misunderstanding between them, Martyn originally thought Grian was taken by the Watchers, so when he sees him so willingly on Their side.... Dressed up with wings spread out behind him.. He does feel betrayed, abandoned almost ! How could Grian join their side, after everything ?

Grian also thinks he was abandoned--He was going to return to Evo, promise ! But by time he did get to visit, everyone was gone, the server was closed, they left without him ! The Watchers probably encourage this line of thinking .

Idk if this is Hunger AU canon or my own personal fanon but

one of the "calling cards" that the Watchers used in Evo was bedrock

bedrock is unbreakable by a player

perfect for trapping the player you're using as a Watcher incubator

and the texture looks rough af

when you get desperate you often try to do stuff to escape even if it's impossible, right

so what I'm saying is

probably one of the last things player!Grian did was tearing his hands to shreds trying to break bedrock out of sheer desperation

which makes all the passages in your fic where he's staring at his hands even more *gestures vaguely*

Its also made me realize i dont think ive ever actually told yall what did happen during that interim where Grian was captive as a Player before he died and became a Watcher, so buckle in i guess as i try to explain this one to yall (obligatory cws for captivity, parasitism, violated autonomy, body horror, and major character death discussion)

Yknow the world borders the life series has?? It was like that, but tiny. Maybe a couple chunks' worth of space to move around in. He spawned into a savannah biome and the Watchers specifically in charge of keeping an eye on him (pun intended) penned him in with the borders, implanted the specially-coded larva, and then retreated back just outside the server's barrier code to, well. To Watch.

So post Evo dragon fight the Watchers convinced Grian to join them without telling him what that entailed. They then proceeded to whisk him away to the server cluster's dev crystal, which is where the remnants of this Watcher colony made their semi-permanent home. There, held together basically only by the Watchers' ability to manipulate code, they had Grian make a brand new server.... and immediately trapped him in it.

He spent a year there slowly dying, eaten from the inside out by a parasite that was collecting his memories, copying over his stats and personality, with very limited space and resources to get by with. I know he built a tiny house out of acacia, but it never got any bigger than a starter base. He lived off of mostly bread and the meat from a few animals that spawned in with him; he primarily used stone tools, because those were what was most readily available. It was a very terrifying and lonely year, where all access to the outside world was cut off, and he was meticulously watched over to keep from dying while the larva inside him continued to grow and destroy him.

The Watchers were mostly hands-off in terms of interaction, but they did do regular check-ins to ensure the larva was alive and that there was no danger present to its host. Hostile mobs were carefully warded off, and Grian spent most of his time alternating between begging them to let him go (they never responded), trying to figure out ways to escape (it never worked), and tending to baseless chores just to keep from going out of his mind as his body grew weaker and weaker and more unstable around him.

I have a lot of feelings about this tbh, bc its just such a bleak scenario to think about-- trapped in a tiny cage with something killing you from the inside out, and your captors wont even talk to you about it properly. Being left otherwise to your own devices, with the terrible, lingering knowledge that, even if it was under duress, you still agreed to this. The fact that, after a certain point, after your questions and pleas are summarily ignored and brushed aside, you finally realize: you aren't meant to survive this. You are going to die.

A juvenile Watcher's first meal are the emotions during their host's last few moments. Grian was no exception; he cracked his way out of his own ribcage, and, without meaning to, amplified and feasted on Player!Grian's agony and terror as he died. With their memory codes finally disconnected, Grian had to watch himself through the eyes of a stranger as his terrified consciousness dissolved and his body fell apart into nothing more than loose strings of code.

Only then, still weak and flailing and helpless, was he was brought into the colony proper, in order to teach him how to be a Watcher. It wouldnt be for another few years before Grian gained the strength, control, and insight required to make his desperate escape. In total, i wanna say he spent somewhere between.... 4-6 years??? with the colony against his will. It would take another 4 for him to finally scrape together the courage to contact Mumbo and finally ask him for an invite into the Hermitcraft proper

One of these days i do plan to write that reunion, actually, which i'll add to the series as another prequel just like all the words that i forgot to say, which takes place roughly 6-8 months after Grian finally joins Hermitcraft. And if yall want to read an absolutely fantastic fic that deals with the moment Watcher!Grian was born and Player!Grian died, you should absolutely check out my friend @raichett 's fic Divergency, which ive pretty much canonized bc it REALLY hits the nail on the head for that situation.

Okay this got a lot longer than i meant it to sidhskdjej also those timeframes are a little squiggly bc i havent fully settled on where they fall on the general timeline. I wanna say Grian had been a Watcher for abt a decade by the time Mumbo got him onto Hermitcraft, though, so thats the loose timeline im working off of when i talk abt this :] anyway thanks for giving me an excuse to write this all out!!! while your idea about the bedrock isnt necessarily canon, i absolutely ADORE it and can totally see Grian just tearing up his hands while scrabbling against the world border.... utterly heartbreaking we fucking LOVE to see it. okay wanda i had the world's busiest weekend so i was just staring at this ask for like a few days but YESSSS!

i'm always so happy when anything happens to reinforce jimmy's status as a listener/listener-aligned xD so many people forget my boy. Also, not to be someone who keeps bringing things back to my own fanfics, but it really reminded me of my Listener!Jimmy fic from last year where the Listeners spoke in Jimmy's head the entire time. Like hmm, maybe that's just something they can do,

Also, I like that Grian couldn't see Jimmy. Remember he was confused in the beginning that Jimmy could see him despite not appearing on the tab list? Spectators show up on the tab list normally. Jimmy didn't appear on the list and Grian was like, "I don't think you can see me" until Jimmy started saying what he was doing. Jimmy was logged on in spectator mode, but he was vanished which removed him from the list. Which of course is how the task had to be done, or else anyone on the server could've hit tab and seen that Jimmy was online for some reason. But I also think that's just. very interesting, within the world of the story. Grian's a Watcher but he couldn't see the Listener.

That's fun to me. Do their powers sort of conflict/cancel out? Can their powers hide them from view? Idk but it's fascinating to think about. Also, totally right with the Listener who has to Watch and the Watcher who has to Listen. I'm fond of thinking of Watchers and Listeners as very very similar, and I feel like this just sort of reinforced the idea that they're sides of the same coin or something.

Also it's fun that in-universe calling someone on discord is considered "using ethereal means to set up communication" LOL. jimmy's using magic to talk to grian, confirmed

Okay okay but hear me out on something else that’s been stirring around in my brain. Branzy was a Watcher but he HATED the job. He didn’t want to have anything to do with the Watchers and their strict rules and the limited free time they had. They couldn’t even talk! So instead, he ran away!!

Most Watchers in Watcher form are drawn with white hair and purple eyes. And with Grian, a lot of people still draw him with purple eyes out of his Watcher form. And we know in Fanon he was a really good coder. Now, let’s assume Branzy is not as good as Grian with coding, so he was less able to hide his Watcher features and instincts/natures of a Watcher idk whatever you call it. The white hair, purple eyes, bloodthirsty-mess, etc.

So, in conclusion, Watcher Branzy!!

I might just be looking a little too deeply into this tho- I rlly like the idea

grian, when the watchers first "gave" him (forced upon him) his wings, they gave him wings of clay. they did this on pirpose, but told grian otherwise. they said it was his fault, that his greed was still within him, and that as long as his wings reflected this, he would never be a true watcher.

when grian left the watchers, and joined hermitcraft season 6, his wings changed, as he was no longer in his watcher "form". despite this, his core being (and code) had still changed, and his (formerly) human form now had wings (as well as some other "watcher" traits.

at the beginning of s6, grian's wings were mostly white, but to them still clung the odd, cold, uncomfortable, and not-quite-real purple of the watchers' influence. (many mistook the color of the purple-gray of a standard enchanted elytra, an assumption that grian leaned into.)

as s6 progressed, the purple slowly began to fade, his wings warming into a full, rich, and healthy white. (at one point, they almost looked like sun-kissed sand.)

during the a77 vs hippies arc, grian's wings darkened somewhat into a mossy stone gray, with flowers and mushrooms growing in them.

in s7, grian's wings became almost like the stereotypical parrot wings he is frequently drawn with, but with red, yellow, and green feathers, and no blue.

during the mycelium resistance arc, those colors faded, overtaken by odd, gray-purple fungus. when the resistance was over, his "parrot" colors returned.

he kept the false parrot coloration in 3rd life, although his wings were too small to actually use, especially without elytra. as he lost his lives, his wings lost color, going from red-yellow-green, to red-yellow, to pure red. when he died, although his body wasn't there for long before the world began to reset, sending him and all the other contestants home, his wings faded into a dull, lifeless gray. not the gray of stone, not even really the gray of death, but rather the gray of unlife.

s8, grian's wings returned, at first, to their not-parrot coloration. as boatem progressed, his wings darkened to match the dragon egg, the void, and the star-speckled skies, that of the server and of midnight alley.

as the moon grew closer, grian's wings brightened menacingly, a pale glow overtaking the speckling of stars and the dark purple-blue of of the space between. when grian jumped into the boatem hole with his friends, his wings had been entirely eclipsed with the moon's light.

s9. the light of the moon softened and warmed, back to a almost neutral, sun-kissed sand white. until he discovered/built the Entity, and they darkened into an odd stone-flesh gray, once again growing moss, among other things. like this, at least while on the hermitcraft server, his wings have remained.

during his time on empires, grian's wings returned to their not-parrot coloring, but seemed to shimmer with golden sunlight.

grian's wings in his "watcher" form, should he ever return to it, have remained clay all this time.

At my summer camp job I saw some adult wearing a shirt that said "You're just jealous the voices talk to me" and I immediately though of you and your art. Only problem is that I'm stupid and couldn't figure out which grian/xelqua variant would wear a shirt like that so I've been picturing them all wearing it and giggling slightly under my breath for twenty minutes now

I love Evolution Smp but I DO dislike that everyone makes it about Grian. I think people think it’s JIST about the Watchers hating Grian but NO. They hated the PROPERTY POLICE AS WELL. What about the Listeners?? How Jimmy was dragged through time to be the first one at the Spawn and to be given a mission by the Listeners??
