Hi I’m obsesseddddd with your hunger au and after reading the lore doc and the fic I have a couple questions if you don’t mind

Ok first off this isn’t really a question and more like a “huh wouldn’t that be fucked up” thought but uhhhh. So og grian was pretty much trapped in a box and constantly watched while the larva developed right. Did the watchers ever feed off him? Bc I imagine being trapped and just waiting to die wouldn’t be great for your emotional state. Or would they not since he is hosting the larva and that point so they can’t/wont feed on a host? Oh also you said that he made the deal to become a watcher while under duress. I imagine that duress could easily be heightened by some hungry watchers. And having your brain lightly fried would probably make you more susceptible to agreeing to a fucked up situation

And for my second question I was curious how aware the general populace/the hermits are of watchers?? Like are they a known thing and ppl just aren’t sure how they work or what. Because the rescue group had to puzzle out that grian was benefiting from their suffering in some way, but pearl seemed to have some idea of what grian was with the whole “eating our brains” bit so I’m curious what levels of knowledge they’re operating with here

Im so glad you like the fic, anon!! :DD im always so touched when people tell me they enjoyed it enough to read the lore behind it-- gods ive gotta update that, there are a sizeable amount of newer asks i havent added to it yet, plus my beloved friend @/corvidaearts made a proper carrd for it on my birthday that i plan on replacing the google doc with!!! Just, uh, as soon as i add aforementioned posts dkcjsjdjfj

That would be super fucked up if they fed on him while he was trapped, OUGHHHH.... id say in canon probably not, because feeding off of one Player is really really dangerous for them, and Grian was now a host for their experiment to see if they could bring their population back up. If anything, nobody touched or interacted with him beyond the bare minimum it took to keep him safe from any potential respawns, and it was likely only the colony elders who even had direct access to him in the first place. THAT BEING SAID..... GODS THATS FUCKED UP I LOVE IT. And, well, i suppose one Watcher did feed on him.. which was Grian himself, as he emerged from his Player cocoon. Player!Grian's final moments of agony and terror were amplified to the max as his Watcher-self's very first meal, and that haunts Grian a lot late at night if he lets himself think about it

The duress he was placed under to become a host in the first place involved a significant amount of heightened emotional leverage though, thats for sure. One of these days i need to map out how exactly that went down, but i know that it involved an offer that was not actually an offer, several lies through omission, intimidation tactics that spanned the entirety of Evo in the first place, and using Grian's own fear-- both of them, and for his friends-- against him. Real fucked up situation all around 😔😔😔😔

General populace does not know much if anything about the Watchers!! The Watchers are, aside from this one colony, pretty much extinct; even before that, they relied quite a lot on camouflage and secrecy to keep their presence from being discovered, both by their prey and by the Seekers that hunted them.

Some very very old Players might know whispers of information-- rumors from the tail end of a game of telephone, as it were. And there are for sure a few individuals here and there who know of them due to personal experience (including the entire Evo crew, which was ofc a special case), but because Player information is not centralized in any capacity in this universe, the vast majority of Players have zero knowledge that Watchers even exist, let alone what they do and how they feed.

Pearl, with her previous knowledge and experience with Watchers and how they operated while involved with the Evo server, made some really good educated guesses about how Grian works and what's going on with him. And ofc everyone on Hermitcraft, plus all the lifers, knows that Grian at the very least can manipulate Player emotions to an extreme degree-- putting those context clues together, you can piece together quite a few connections. She doesn't have the full picture, but at this point in time she's basically figured out a good chunk of it. The rest will have to come from Grian himself >:]

I think! In evo everyone was like very young adults. I think pearl and grian went to high school together and grian innocently invited pearl to join evo like some sign up program thingy that they didnt know at the time was gonna be bad and irreversible-

I think pearl had a dumb teenage crush on grian. I cant even tell if its onesided or not. But it doesnt matter cause after the dragon fight he was gone. They took him away. Pearls best friend. Who welcomed him to the server, who had been there for him in a lot of personal important moments of their teenage years just like he was for G. Who introduced Pearl to everyone and gave him stuff to start out. Sure, Pearl is capable, doesnt need the help, but its so nice someone is so thoughtful.

And now that someone is gone. Pearl falls into a depressive episode for weeks, even months, with many other evolutionists trying to cheer him up. Eventually he does! Sort of. A happy christmas with friends.... before- the finale.

Before the world starts falling appart all around them. I picture this- purple sky, meteorites, parts of the world glicthing out, falling appart, eternal void, like the day they lost him.

And then they reach "safety", or so martyn and jimmy claim. Theyre the only ones who can speak to those *things* that helped them move to the new town. Never again like the old one. Thats for sure.

And Pearl- is trapped. In a cocoon. The evolutionist moth evolved, into a wolf. The dark shy closed off moth didnt work for the watchers anymore, they turned him into a happy and excited fierce dog, a man's best friend. That took him the whole season and so he missed 3rd life but he was there for last life and after scattering for resources-

Before meeting Scott.

He meets Grian.

After all this time. He sees Grian again. His best friend. His first love- and Grian doesn't seem to recognize him.

Sure, theyre both changed, physically and in demeanor. Just like Pearl grew taller and hairier, fluff replaced with fur, shyness replaced with open excitement and tons of energy. Grian had changed a whole lot. Hair, height, body type, it was as if theyd switched- except his face was just- creepy. Uncanny. It was still Grian just also- a completely different person.

He pretended like he didnt knew him. But that was a lie. Pearl knew it was a lie cause the moment he pushed too far trying to make him remember "evo and the old times", Grian snapped. He asked Pearl to not talk about Evo ever again, for his own good? Forget it ever happened.

And thus it became an unspoken rule between evo lifers to pretend like that never happened- some did better than others. Martyn surely forgot about the old days when he ditched Pearl at the end of DL session 1. Pearl didnt tho, and brought it up slightly to him at the Broken Hearts Club.

Even confronted BigB after finding out about the "secret soulmates" thing.

I like to think of Pearl, specially DL Pearl, a bit like Hera, specially EPIC Hera at least on her main song I heard. Viewing loyalty as so important and cheating as so horrible- cause lets be real, she just went off to the nether with a friend, the first one to claim someone else as his soulmate was Scott, but thats a whole other can of worms.

So when Scar, his only friend thats still by Pearl's side, brings up how his soulmate, GRIAN, is cheating on him- with BIGB of all people?

"BigB. I expected better from you."

Nothing else needs to be said. Because to have expectations is to think you know somebody. And Pearl thought he knew all his fellow evolutionists... seems not.

Oh but back to the gripearl stuff- the amount of rage Pearl must've felt finding out Grian was doing something as horrible as that to Scar, the only person he can rely on (cough snowblings crumbs)

Pearl officially hates Grian's guts. And he regrets ever even liking him in the first place.

Oh but when limited life hits and Grian looses his boys. His bad boys.

On one of their last nights, and they know it will be, BigB, Grian and Pearl, all sit behind those small barricades on the skyline (i forget what its called), reminiscing. Fuck rules. They all know theres a season after yet every finale does feel like the end of the world. The end of a world they know so well. Everything caving in and all they have is one another.

Sigh anyways thats it for life series gripearl. Also i think gripearl sounds like gripers and thats funny to me

Okay. In case you might need a refreshment, this is what my Xelqua looks like

Watchers dont really have forms, not ones that can be seen by players at least (they live in the space between servers, where no player is ever able to see them) so they are just,,, these things.

Xelqua in particular has this kinda star/sun shaped "head", because I'm a sucker for sun/star symbolism when it comes to Grian, but also because it's his distinctive (not all watchers have forms that distinguish them from the rest, but G does)

(What happens when he burns out? Will he go supernova and become a black hole, destroy everything around him?

The reason Xelqua is known as the guide and the light amongst watchers and those who know of them is because when he is actively watching a server, he manifests as the brightest star in the sky. During the day he just blends with the sun, but at night he can be seen by normal players. He tends to act like Polaris does here, as a guide to those who wander and need direction. Thus, the guide.

(I like to think that when he gets to hc6 there is a point, and this may be months into the season, when he is either alone or with another hermit looking at the stars. And there is this moment when he sees himself from the perspective of a player for the fisrt time, he sees that light in the sky that is shining just a bit brighter than the rest, and is hit with- something. Like looking into a mirror for the first time, he recognizes himself as a watcher and as a player that is looking straight at him. If he had a mouth, he'd smile.)

The eyes (and this goes for every watcher) get more abstract the farther away they are from the main "body". Again, no one can see this, but it means that their sight is more limited the further away from them it is, and not as noticeable by players who know what to look for.

When Xelqua decides that being a watcher is neat and all, but it has been a long while and he'd like to be able to play again, it very much works as if he was playing minecraft, just better. He can feel things as a player does, needs to sleep and eat and drink water, but nothing really affects him, you know? We make our characters in mc eat and rest because otherwise it will die and be forced to respawn, but there is nothing at stake for us, we can step away anytime and come back the same. The same goes for Grian.

I could go forever I think about the implications of all this but this is the lore I have firmly written down! (for now) (if anyone wants to ask me about something more specific I'll be glad to answer) Thank you so much for asking i am kissing you on the mouth
