I've been playing a lot of Prophecy lately (the only part of Season of Arrivals that remains) and I feel like the Eris and Drifter dynamic was originally meant to be like her dynamic with Cayde. Neither of them liked each other, Eris made jibes at both of them about wanting to hurt/kill them (Drifter: You're killin' me, Three Eyes! - Eris: I would love to kill you. / Cayde: Don't worry, I'll keep my ear to the ground. - Eris: And I will try not to step on his head.) and it seems to me like someone at Bungie just thought it was hilarious when Eris had beef with some guy she hated. (Drifter was also just a stand-in for Cayde in a lot of ways once Cayde bit it.)

But then someone ELSE walked into Bungie Studios and went "omg a man and woman bickering? That means they LIKE each other!"

You're 100% correct, both on Drifter filling Cayde's roll as "funny roguish guy with a dark history" and Eris' and Drifter's dynamic originally mirroring her dynamic with Cayde.

This is probably going to get me marked for assassination but I liked Eris' and Cayde's dynamic. I also liked Arrivals thru Beyond Light-era Eris & Drifter. Even if it flanderized both characters, I think it was funnier than not, and there was just enough tension that I could understand the shippers even if I didn't ship them myself. (Full disclosure: I indulged in a bit of both as a guilty pleasure, though neither was ever a favorite.) Overall, their dynamic was such that one could read into them as platonic, romantic, or even having a bit of a sibling rivalry. It was fun!

But whatever's happened to both of their characterizations is even worse than flanderization, IMO - it really does feel like watching someone's bland OOC "this is a vehicle to have these characters who I think are hot kiss" fanfiction put to screen. It's bitterly funny, but also leaves me with secondhand embarrassment. I can't say I get much schadenfreude, even if I feel validated because I called it playing out in this way years ago.

I think the sexism (and racism) of the D2 writing team is beyond question at this point and leaning on overplayed tropes like bickering = love, grumpy x sunshine, women taming men/men domesticating women, characters being humanized through romance, dead gf for sympathy, etc. kinda drive home both the extent and the mundanity of it. For a few years now I've been saying "how did this survive any sort of scrutiny" when it comes to story beats in D2 (the continual sidelining of black characters, villainous lesbians, killing off disabled characters... etc.) and at this point I'm inclined to think there is none. Everything feels both insincere and self-unaware.

#19 - a kiss for luck

"You sure about this?" Cayde-6 looked down into the valley below, eyeing the lay of the land scrupulously. "Awwwful lot of bad guys down there." He could see the colors of the House of Wolves everywhere, even from a distance.

Andal Brask snorted, laughing softly.

"Down there? Nah. There's not so many." He squared his shoulders and stance, adjusting his belt on his hips. "There's like. Barely any at all." He grinned over at his partner. "Right? We can take 'em. No problem."

Cayde grinned back.

"No, yeah, no problem!" He chirped, pulling his cannon and giving it a showy spin. "I mean. I've totally got all those guys," he swept his hand in a broad gesture that encompassed nearly all of the valley. "Easy peasy. Not sure what you're gonna do, actually. Was just testing to see if you were paying attention."

Andal let out another laugh, this one louder and much bolder.

"Seeing if I was paying attention..!" he scoffed. "Idiot," he scolded warmly. "I'm payin' way more attention than you are!"

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah."

"How so?"

Andal grinned.

"You'll see."

"We bettin' on it?" Cayde tipped his chin up. Andal mirrored the gesture with a smirk.

"Sure. How 'bout fifty." "A hundred. Don't be cheap!" "A hundred!? That's everything I have!" Andal balked. Cayde shrugged with a crooked grin. "Split up, most kills doesn't have to walk home naked?" he offered his hand to shake on, and Andal grudgingly shook. "Fine!" He huffed, but gripped Cayde's fist and reeled him in. He kissed him firmly, startling the Exo.

"He-hey! What was that for?!" Cayde gasped, wide-eyed, the lights in his throat bright with an Exo flush. Andal grinned.

"Luck. You'll need it."
