what can possibly be more personal, more ponderous and intimate than i love you?

i'm sure this is something everyone who has read TSH has previously wondered about. i know i have. what i also know is that the most common theory is "live forever", and yes — it would make sense, given that henry is undeniably a devoted little teacher's pet to julian, but it does seem a little melodramatic to me (specifically because julian did abandon them all in the end as well, lol). henry going out with a bang (literally) wouldn't be defined by something as simple as that, however much meaning is attached to it in theory. besides, we've all heard that theory a million times over. i'll offer a new one.

he's goddamn pretentious. to the bone. he refused to take his SATs and thereby consciously denied himself the opportunity to attend any prestigious schools (which he would've certainly gotten into and dominated) for singularly aesthetic reasons. you simply can't get more pretentious than that. i always say that he's too intelligent for his own good — to the point it no longer benefits him at times. just too smart to possess any ability to reflect on himself. almost amusing in that way.

therefore, i believe it was something along the lines of a riddle — something that would keep camilla puzzling over it for a long time succeeding his death. and yes, you can say that his suicide was an impulsive decision and all that, but he had been (even verbally) entertaining suicidal ideology way before he actually went through with it. plus, he just seems like someone who would have something like that — his last words — memorized and ready to go at all times, specifically at a time as dangerous as toying with the possibility of being detained and thrown in jail for murder. just a thought.

i'm almost 100% sure it was also in any language other than english, according to his customs. i've already elaborated on how pretentious he is. he wouldn't make it easy for anyone to figure him out that quickly, not even camilla. the i love you was just a premise, nearly nothing compared to the whisper. and if it's not english, then it must be one of the languages that he does know. assuming that it's either latin or ancient greek, he would go out of his merry way to make it as complex and hardly translatable as he can. he would apply the most archaic of archaic versions of those languages, even with one simple phrase. as i said, he would've planned it out beforehand deliberately. it makes perfect sense.

what it would be, however, is a whole other conversation of its own. maybe that very "i love you" or previously mentioned "live forever", just in a different language. that is the simplest answer i can offer. i like to dig deeper when it comes to mysteries such as this one, though, so i've been gathering my thoughts all day today in order to predominantly satisfy myself with an obnoxiously pretentious answer. how about: "to the stars" (kitsch but fitting, obviously convoluted, and in a different language) or a translated version of "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" — just to deride religion and tradition one last time. or, perhaps, "permanence". something that perpetuates his convicted disbelief in vanitas. "never gone"; "the conclusion". and i know, all of these sound dumb as hell in english, but do remember — they would be uttered in a different language, and in a complex way, too. to be mulled over; wondered about for a long time, even as a scholar.

someone needs to hook me up with ms tartt's phone number so we can settle this once and for all, lol. but then again, i don't want to know. i don't want a simple answer to such a mystifying, ponderous question. i'm fine with eternally musing over it — it certainly keeps me entertained.

Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

Some of the lines of shounen manga between two boys are insane, and definitely why they get themed promise jewellery, lmao

But on a serious note, I'd say its because of genre expectation. There's definitely a ~ vibe ~ around BL manga (the same as the vibe around yaoi) and what the audience expects from it and its characters. BL carries an atmosphere and connotation that Shoujo doesn't. It's kind of why I'm reluctant to actually explore it that much. (I keep almost starting Sasaki to Miyano, but the fact it is labelled BL kinda puts me off.)

In that light, I can see why things like Yoshida insisting Banana Fish isn't BL happen - especially around the time it was originally published. That being said, the love story is so intrinsically baked into Ash and Eiji's relationship that you can't not read it like that. (Not without a lot of effort.)

And I kind of prefer that to an 'I love you.' There's something about not saying it, and leaving it as subtext, that I enjoy more. Probably for the same reason at the 19th century poet - it means more. It's says more.

I've been Banana Fish centric, but the same applies to things like Vanitas no Carte and Moriarty the Patriot too. There's something special about not needing to say it outright.

Maybe that's just because I've been on tumblr for so long that queerbaiting and subtext is what I'm most used to, and, honestly, get a little nostalgic for.

I think that Mochizuki was also inspired by Banana Fish in terms of relationship dynamics, tone, and themes. Do you see similarities between the two?

Mm, maybe? Full disclosure that my experience with Banana Fish is that I binge read roughly 70-80% of it in a day or two like 10 months ago, and I have not finished it or revisited it since those couple days, so my impression of it may not be the most accurate.

Off the top of my head, there's a similarity in that they're both stories of relative outsiders who become entwined in the life of a very doomed young man with horrifically traumatic past. I know Eiji is a photographer, but I don't actually remember whether there's any element of him documenting Ash's life, so I can't comment on if him and Noé have that similarity. There's also the prevalence of sexual assault as a theme and source of trauma in both, and the way that both series are sort of straddling the shonen/shoujo line. VnC is a shonen that very much feels like it's being written for women (or at least, not particularly aimed at teenage boys most of the time lmao), and Banana Fish is an uncommonly violent and action-heavy shoujo.

That said, I definitely can't say I find the tones or vibes to be very similar. VnC is a series defined by the intricacies in its relationships. There's a good deal of action and flash, but it's also a series in which every little glance and expression is meant to be read into. It shines in its characters and relationships and in the way it continually loops back on itself to psychologically examine its characters and drive them closer together.

My experience of Banana Fish, on the other hand, was defined by how much it felt like a whirlwind of an 80s action movie. That's not to say that it doesn't have quieter scenes or develop the relationships between its characters, but I certainly wouldn't call it relationship-driven like I would for VnC. Also, though we do certainly get a lot about Ash and his history and how he ended up the way he is, Banana Fish is not The Case Study of Ash Lynx. It's not about examining him in the same way that VnC is about examining Vanitas.

I might not be articulating this super well bc I'm writing this post while very tired, but overall, I'm guessing Banana Fish probably wasn't that direct an inspiration for Mochijun. She's talked a lot about her inspirations for VnC, and it hasn't come up, and though there are interesting parallels, I don't think the vibes or content *quite* match up.

However, it is a really interesting comparison to talk about. Sometimes something isn't an inspiration for something else, but it is a fascinating touchpoint to hold in up against. I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this.

Idk, like I know it can turn people off, but it’s the best one out there truly, and I was changed after reading it. (You can read this one blind, I think it tells you all you need to know about the plot of the game that you’d need to know, so. some of the most amazing prose I’ve ever read, some of the most gut wrenching lines, just. [Foxglove Notes: this is my favorite book of all time. Like, not even my favorite fic, it is genuinely my favorite Book of all time. It is kingdom hearts so it’s got some jarring moments where your like ‘wait, Minney Mouse??’ And you just have to roll with it cause it’s a COMPLETE au, so there’s nothing in the setting that is about kingdom hearts, it’s just the characters. I think about this work at least once a week, it’s so much more than that description, but I feel like I can’t actually talk about what is in the fic, cause it’s one of those stories where part of the story is things getting revealed. (If you read this tho, please know because it’s a complete au, you might want to treat it as its own novel, and not try to get into KH fic cause I can not in good graces tell someone to read none au KH fic without knowing anything about how absolutely bonkers the game series is. Before the blood of boy dropped from his pale neck, the vampire was taken back and threw on nearest solid superface, a wagon train. A woman dressed up similar a priest stabbed, the heart and with other free hard with a twin dagger she cut off the head with a shift and powerful movement. Like that the vampire turned in dust. The woman with darkest eyes, so dark it was impossible to see the pupil turned to boy and ordered. “Hide under the wagon.” Her tone was so severe the boy obeyed. Hiding here, the boy could hear screaming and steal met anther, the noise of dropping blood. The boy screamed when a man approached his hide, but his mind calmed itself seeing he was dress up like the woman. Hunters. The man was big with bronze skin, but he moved with calm and affability making him a lot less intimidating, than he offered a hand to the boy. "how you found me" the boy rudely asked and pointed at his mask, that looked a lot like

ex vote. The mask covered half his face and only lips could be seeing. "This is a vote I did to the Lord, but I'm not blind." He answered without a trance of annoyance. The boy left his hide but he didn't take the hard that the man offered. There were very few survivors of troupe were crying and being dirty of blood and ashes from vampires. The matriarch removed her attention from the female hunter and screamed to the boy.

"You! YOU! YOU TOOK MY DAUGHTER AND NOW MY PEOPLE! YOU ARE BAD LUCK! YOU ARE ALWAYS BEEN! The boy was so hurt from her words that without thinking he took the hand of kind man hide behind him; he knew they hated him, he killed his mother who was very loved, he was half -foreigner because his father. But they weren't never so explicit about only secret chatting and briefly spiteful stares.

The boy freeze from behide the man seeing she was coming to her, like a furious bull. The man just stopped her with a firm sign of his hand, and polite and yet firmest voice.

“Don’t need to be so aggressive.” And he gently pushed the matriarch away from them.

"There is not such things like misfortune or luck. The world is place of chaos not order, something happened because they happen.” The hunter woman approached to them. The matriarch screamed more." My daughter died to birth him.

Matriarch was surprised because nobody in trope had never stopped her behave. "Well, what I say it is unlogical and disrespectful as you said to him. Apologize.” She concluded with the last word with cold poison. " I.. I... "

The boy answered he didn't need it, making a brave face with sarcasm but his voice was shaking. The woman looked the boy and asked if he was sure, the boy answered back his decision. So she left the arm of old lady, there wasn't sign but it was painful. The man with mask knelt on height of boy and asked."Do you want to come with us? " The boy looked the body of his father; they weren't been really family but they have each other like two strangers connected by solitude. Or it wasn't? Why did he die for him? Why the survival of boy was more important than his own?

The matriarch protested, but she was silenced by the woman.

“Why should he stay with you? You didn’t sound very kind to him.”

“Well, he stay here.”

“If he wants, yes.”

“Doesn’t matter what he wants. We are family.”

The woman make a sign with closed eyes but when she opened them they were more famine of vampire’s.

“If there is I think I hate when people uses “family” as excuse. Tell me; are you going to sell him or kept like your doormat?”

The matriarch answered. “You are nothing to him,I have right to him. I ‘m still alive.”

The woman bended her heard on side and gave the slyest smile the boy had ever seen.

“ Well, that can change easily.”

“ … You .. you cannot .. you are hunter…” Matriarch said in arrogant voice but her hands were shaking.

“ Yes, I’m. But hunter’s job is fighting vampires, if we can salve humans in process is good… but we can easily come to late, and everybody here is dead except the boy. Only truth matters is the one we wrote on or paperwork” Now her eyes looked like well so deep that boy saw one time. It was so deep it was impossible seeing the end.

Now the rest of troupe was so terrified they were crying and shaking again.

She looked the boy. “I know orphanage isn’t the first choice, but ours is pretty good and we will find a family for you. Do you want to came with us?”

The boy make a shy affirmative sign and the woman just said. "Let's move on.” The masked man was exasperated." Sorry about rudeness of my colleague. She is better to stabbing things and ordering around. She is Sapphire paladin. Me paladin Alexandrite. What is your name, little one?” And he offer his hand.

The boy took the hand of man, while Sapphire banked orders to the troupe and other hunters who arrived.

The wagon that was shared by the boy and his father was locked up with his corpse, while adults discussed how handle it. Hunters tried to get some information how he wanted his burial from his son, but he didn't have answers: they didn't really talked, sometimes little talk but not serious topic as that, in the end they decided to cremate the body once they were in Toledo and buried. But the boy asked if he could shatter the ashes in airs, he knew the troupe did it with his ash of his mother, so a least there was possibility they met again in air.

In mean time he was sitting with the two paladins on cart, Alexandrite was near to the boy and Sapphire in front of them. "Very well, Jude." Alexandrite answered. The boy made an annoying face that was noticed by Sapphire. "you don't like your name.” " who likes a name of betrayed? The piecing black eyes stared him so deeply... And then she threw something to him. He got a silver medal with a Saint. “Saint Judas or Jude in English, he is Saint who deserve all respect because he is the patron of lost cases. He was one trusted friend of our lord and kindest soul. And you took his name. Your parents named after him.” The little boy touched hesitant the medal, it was from his father, but the words on it was in English, so probably that medal used to belong to his mother, because all troupe before moving here in mainland they were from England. So his name was an honour to the Saint, chosen by his parents? Or just by his father after the boy survived the difficult birth? Looking back he had never pronounced "Jude" with light disgusting like the other members of troupe. But these were only hypothesis, he would never knew the truth. Tears were burning his eyes but he kept back, not wanting showing them. People wouldn't never kind with his tears, a lot time trope screamed not being such crybaby. The sapphire stood up and the boy got scared by her expected a slap, but she covered his face with her jacket, creating a little space of privacy. Alexandrite gave half hug to the boy covered by jacket without saying a word. They wouldn't judge him. He cried without reservation knowing nobody wouldn't hurt him about. The boy felt sleeping and than waking up by gentle hand. The boy brushed because he used the paladin shoulder like a pillow and dirty with drool his jacket. Sapphire ‘s jacket was still a duvet. We are arrived. The main said. He smiled despite his mask the boy felt the warm of his voice. “Toledo.” If the man didn't tell the boy would recognising the city because the troupe passed here few times. Sapphire gave a half smile. And as she read his mind"you know the Toledo in light but now are going to know her truth identity. No a beautiful dancer but a hunter, Toledo is the city of hunters. She sounded so warm but then she come back to her cold and guarded attitude.

“Jude, in this city nobody would think you are crazy if you talk about vampires. Everyone works for us. But the church usually take children like you for turning in hunters, but you still have a choice. I’m not to force on you that road.”

The boy didn’t like her concern , she thought he was weak?

“ I want to be hunter.” He screamed.

“ Rage is a good thing.” She said without being influence but his behaviour.

“ Rage can salve you when everything else is gone… but it is also a double-edged blade.”

Alexandrite concluded.“It make you blind. And trust me I know very well.”

“I’m sure.” Sadness was gone in place of rage. “ and can I be call Diaz?”

Diaz was surname of his father, only thing he left to him.

-The genre of it is thrill, mystery, detective and supernatural.

Is there any inspiration for this story?

-The characters are all inspired by the fairytale that I have once read or heard of it. Example; The Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, etc.

Did you get inspiration from Disney?

-No, I don't. It's from the Grimms Brothers' book that inspired me, but there are some that are from Disney but I'll try not to make it too obvious.

When will it come out?

-When I am finally done with the plot and the twist of the story.

-I have done what they're appearance looks like, I will post it later.

-It is alright to ship the characters of my story and also headcanon them. As long as it is a legal ship and also none of the characters of mine are out of character. And it is alright to make a theory of them, let alone analyse them with all you want! I would love to read it.

What makes you want to write your book?

-I want to try to write a story of thrills and mysteries, combined with the supernatural. I am a fan of thrills and love to make one. Dead Don't Tell Tale is just a practice story I am making. I want to try and twist the characters of how my liking.

Noé’s hands quivered holding the pathetic example of a piece of stationary. It was crushed, torn in the middle, and nearly falling apart. The ink was barely decipherable. So much of it smeared with blood.

 “I realize this is more unfair to you than it is to me.”

You got that damn right, that awful human. How dare you. Noé told himself he didn’t want to continue. That was another lie.

 “I see you writing in your notebook all the time. You are so focused on your work. You are so dedicated to your purpose. It’s admirable. Because in a way I can relate.”

So, he was looking at him. Noé wasn’t just imagining the small glances thrown his direction. The little flashes of electric blue. His desk was on the side of the room where Vanitas could see a perfect profile of Noé’s candid face while he worked.

 “I hope you never stop being as dedicated as you are.”

Vanitas never spoke like this.

“I hope you find a new purpose after I’m gone.”

Stop. Where was this even coming from?

 “And I hope you are able to forgive yourself.”

Noé laughed. A fake giggle of disbelief.

 “Because Louis would forgive you.”

Damn you. Louis was dead. And now so was Vanitas. Noé wasn’t trying to make a habit of being forgiven by his dead friends.

So why was he saying these things now?

 “And I already forgive you too. Actually, there is nothing for me to forgive, really. You promised to hold up a deal I never thought you would agree to. If anything, I need to apologize.”

Damn right you do.

 “I’m sorry.”

‘Sorry’ doesn’t mean you’ll come back to me.

 “Noé, I’m so sorry, mon chéri.”

Don’t call me that. Noé would never get to hear him say that name ever again. It was torture for Vanitas to remind him of that fact.

 “I’m sorry about the secrets I had to keep from you and that I could never tell you about my past.

I wanted to.

I wanted to terribly.

But I do also know that you understand, as much as you wish it were different… as much as I wish it were different.”

Noé wished nothing more to be holding his Vanitas rather than the decrepit letter in his hand.

This should’ve been a love letter not a suicide note.

In some ways it was both.

“I’m leaving the book in your care. Destroy it, if you can. The tear stone should have shattered upon my death, but the book must also be forgotten.

Burn it, rip it to shreds, throw it into the void between the barriers, if you must.

The world needs to forget any trace of Luna.

The world needs to forget any memory of me.”

I don’t want to forget.

 “I know you can’t forget me. You always were a sentimental one. I know you wouldn’t even dare try. So that is why I must say this.”

Noé stared at the page. His eyes could burn the page to ash if he scrutinized the message with any more intent. His heart pounded with anticipation, trying to guess what words he would read next.

He tried not to be so hopeful, but that’s hard when you’re reading someone’s last words. Vanitas’ last words.

 “Noé…

My friend, and partner in crime.

Whatever words you are hoping to see me say, you will not find in this letter. Whatever confessions you are hoping I write to you will never exist. Whatever I have left unsaid should remain that way.

There are things I could say, things I might even mean, feelings that might even be true, that which will die with my last breath of sanity.

To be human is to feel. But I’ve never really been human, have I? I was born that way yes, but I don’t have the luxury of that now after all that has happened.

Noé, there are things I cannot say because I mean them.

But they wouldn’t be fair to speak into the world.

Wouldn’t be fair to you.”

Selfish human.

 “And the universe isn’t fair.”

That was one phrase Noé didn’t need to be told to know was the truth.

With a sigh that left his lungs feeling like they should be drowning, Noé finished reading.

He didn’t want to take another breath, but his body forced him. Everything felt heavy. Like his body was made of lead. He couldn’t move for awhile. He just sat at his desk, and turned to the right, looking at Vanitas’ empty bed.

Noé pressed the paper flat to dry and let his mind wander. Eyes unfocused, looking at nothing, but still facing Vanitas’ side of the room. A few memories replayed in his mind. He wished he could lose himself in them. Drown in them if he needed to.

But no.

Some time later, Noé folded up the dry, flattened words of his late partner. One, two, three, four folds in half, into the size of a business card.

That letter found it’s home in the left inside pocket of Noé’s coat, buttoned tight for safekeeping.

He never read those words again. He didn’t need or want to.

Years passed, and from time to time Domi would notice Noé press his right hand to his chest over his heart. She thought it was some routine he absentmindedly did when he was feeling a little more emotional.

What she didn’t know was that there was a little folded piece of paper in his pocket that Noé kept for when he was feeling lonely. Warmed between his hand and his heart for when he needed it to be.

Vanitas’ letter might have said nothing, but its existence meant everything.

Though he only saw the words once, the last line would pop into his mind more often than he was willing to admit.

Vanitas didn’t even have the sense to sign his message. He simply ended with…

 “Noé, I set you free.”

No, Vanitas.

You’ve just left me alone.

one time when you were upset he tried to cook for you, but you promptly offered to do the cooking from then on, and go out to eat more often

you're insecure about something? he's not having any of that EITHER- as soon as you tell him about it, or he notices, he'll be giving you so much positive attention about that insecurity, to show you how he loves all of you and not just the parts of you that you think are worthy of love

he gives the best hugs and cuddles as well- like mfer is 6'1" and extremely loving so you can't tell me he wasn't made to be a big spoon

if you're staying the night with him then he'll try to wait for you to go to bed so you can go to bed together, otherwise by the time you'd joined him to sleep, he'd have stolen the pillows to cuddle them to help him get to sleep

he doesn't say he loves you much, but it's obvious he does through the way he acts; his trust in you, his frequent little compliments, his pda (if you're comfortable with it- if not, he still gives you as much affection in private), and especially when you compare his actions with how he acts around vanitas, it's obvious that you're extra special to him

that's not to say he doesn't; he does still say "i love you" when he remembers to, and in the right kinds of situations like a date
