so, okay.
i’ve been thinking about this for a little bit. i’ve seen a lot of headcanons for aroace leon and i love them but he’s actually not the first character i would’ve headcanoned as asexual.
for me, that would have been lancelot.
hear me out, so in original arthurian legends (i think specifically in the once and future king) lancelot believes his power comes from his purity (aka virginity). the whole reason he thinks he’s The Best Knight is because he’s never had sex.
so onto the Fun of the headcanon, i think (in the merlin version) this is still a thing but NOT because of lancelot.
the knights start hearing these rumors about that “Sir Lancelot is unable to be bested in combat because of his purity” and at first they’re like “Lancelot’s a virgin?” immediately followed by “Lancelot’s a good swordsman because he’s a virgin???”
and they confront him about it and he spends so long losing his shit laughing that they start to get concerned and finally, wiping tears out of his eyes, struggles through an explanation that he’d turned down one too many maidens that they’d started making up justifications for it and he let them because the truth was nobody’s business. he honestly is just Not interested in sex and never has been. but the rumors are fun, so no need to dispel them.

HEAR ME OUT
Merlin season six where it’s modern day and merlin (bearded colin morgan) lives in London, and when arthur (still Bradley james) comes back to life they have to save the world and whatever BUT ALSO the knights haven’t come back to life but they’re like reincarnated into new people (varying genders/races/etc) who suddenly find themselves wrapped up in this medieval destiny
LIKE
(Gwaine) just moved to London and is floating around looking for a place to crash—boom. Runs into Merlin, touch of destiny and all that, Merlin lets them stay in his spare room (they don’t have a job so they “pay rent” by not complaining when arthur and merlin do it in the next room, also by doing the dishes).
(Leon) is just trying to get through a master’s program in medieval studies and classic literature—boom. Runs into Merlin at a library, both of them looking for the same ancient document for research and they get overly invested in whatever it is Merlin and Arthur are working on because goddamn these strange men know a lot about saxon-era britain and that’s the topic of my thesis.
(Lancelot) is climbing the corporate ladder in some random business just trying to make ends meet—boom. Stops Merlin and/or Arthur from walking onto the street as a car hurtles past and there’s a sort of “aha” moment Merlin and Arthur take them out for coffee talking a bit about a problem they’re having with their mission and (Lancelot) asks a really obvious question they hadn’t considered so they adopt them.
(Elyan) is friends with (Leon)’s roommate and practically lives with them and one day when they’re there and the roommate is gone—boom. Everyone’s over so (Leon) can fetch a relevant document they’re borrowing for their research and (Elyan) answers some obscure question the others didn’t know so they get absorbed into the group.
(Percival) lives outside the city working a low level job after their rugby career was a bust and—boom. The team needs some help and (Lancelot) “knows a guy” because the two worked together on a project during their undergrad and weirdly stayed in touch ((Lancelot) helped them get their current job) so when they need some extra muscle…
So we get arthur and merlin in love having to save the world while parenting a team of half-feral 20-somethings who supposedly carry the spirits of their long-dead friends
Does this make sense? Please add on more ideas

So I had just seen this post you made.
"The urge to write a story about a celibate lancelot-esque knight of the medieval times, who is really just an asexual avoiding the demands of their time period."
I'm currently playing a male half elf paladin in dungeons and dragons and I haven't decided his preference, originally I was open to him not being ace but I'm ace. So avoiding getting hit on in game, has been myself bleeding into character.
I'm undecided but considering going ace if I can't manage playing him not as ace.
Would you have any tips on how an ace character could/would interact in such situations. Maybe I could add flavor to this in role play rather then just having him escaping the room or whatever..
I asked on anon because I'm shy and Dyslexic I hope you can help but I understand if you can't. Thank you.
I think I understand! Lancelot himself, despite not truly being ace (although easy to interpret as), is a great example of a few ways your character could act. But I'm not going to force you to delve into super old English literature to play a D&D character.
Here some ways a knight/paladin-esque character may avoid romantic or sexual situations, aside from just fleeing from it.
For a paladin you could work with your DM to make a vow of celibacy or similar part of your oath
A knight itself might claim that they'll only bestow their true love upon the fairest noble they save, and then no matter how many fair nobles that cross their past, never say they're fairest enough
Dodge being hit on by switching the conversation into a speech about being a knight, or saving people, or their oath, or whatever
Many knights historically were also templars or monks, and religious doctrine also kept them from following romantic or sexual advances
Many knights themselves due to culture or the workforce were (equally as the "maidens") considered unpure once indulging into romantic or sexual desire, and worked hard to never break that aspect
They could also view anyone trying to pull them from these oaths, or decisions as a seducers or seductresses
You also make it so your character's only real love and interest is in the fight, the adrenaline, or similar
You also could give your paladin a celibacy oath trait, and make them asexual together, such as becoming a pure knight in order to avoid having to admit being asexual
Good luck with your character anon!

rating whether polyamory would solve famous love triangle plots
Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot (Arthuriana): no because Mordred and Agravaine would not be let in on the mutual consent and would still try to catch Guinevere cheating
Tristan/Iseult/Mark (Tristania): absolutely not because Mark is Tristan’s uncle
Tristan/Iseult/Palomides (Tristania): absolutely yes because between Palomides and Iseult all of Tristan’s most unhelpful impulses would be balanced out
Peeta/Katniss/Gale (Hunger Games): polyamory alone cannot defeat an authoritarian dystopia
Cyrano/Roxanne/Christian (Cyrano de Bergerac): solves every problem in the first 3 acts, solves no problems in the 4th
Wesley/Buttercup/Humperdink (The Princess Bride): while Wesley would be happy living as buttercups side piece, the problem is no amount of mutual consent will fulfill prince humperdinks emotional need to be at war. so no
Orsino/Viola/Olivia (Twelfth Night): most of it yes as long as Sebastian fucks that pirate
Heathcliff/Catherine/Edgar (Wuthering Heights): Technically yes but they all have so many emotional issues that new problems would immediately arise and Catherine would still die of being stressed out by the whole thing
Mark Antony/Cleopatra/Caesar (Antony and Cleopatra): well vibes-wise they were probably all fucking in real life and clearly polyamory alone did not save the Roman Republic
Menelaos/Helen/Paris (The Iliad etc): polyamory alone CAN stop the Trojan war as long as the Greeks know Menelaos tops
Florence/The Russian/Svetlana (Chess): polyamory alone cannot stop the Cold War
The Dutchman/Sente/Erik (The Flying Dutchman): solves every interpersonal problem but would actively damn the Dutchman to wander the seas forever
Mathilde/Julien/Mme de Renal (The Red and the Black): a rare case where polyamory would make everything WORSE! Fucking two people at the same time would make poor asexual Julien even more miserable and more people would die. Mme de Renal’s guilt would be even more destructive. Mathilde would suicide bait everyone else involved.
Raoul/Christine/Erik (Phantom of the Opera): probably not but i want to say yes because its such a funny concept
Jacques/Severine/Roubaud (La Bête Humaine): no! Jacques would just sexually commit TWO murders

Hello! I keep seeing posts calling Mordred explictly queer but none of the texts I've read so far portray him that way. Do you have any screenshots/recommendations? Thank you if you do!!
Hi!
Queer depictions of Mordred in modern retellings absolutely exist! But nothing medieval comes to mind. He usually has a son, Melehan, and sometimes also Melou, and attempts to marry Guinevere to strengthen his claim to the throne in many different texts. That’s not necessarily indicative of his sexuality or gender, of course, but that’s generally the pattern he follows in medieval literature. The closest relationships he has with men are his brothers and he lacks the stark gender non-conformity that Gawain or Gareth have in Vulgate and Le Morte d’Arthur.
Here’s a list of stories in which Mordred is undoubtedly queer:
High Noon Over Camelot by The Mechanisms
Mordred is a transgender man who attempts to keep the peace at Camelot but ultimately becomes the catalyst for its end. (10/10 no notes.)
Mordred, Bastard Son by Douglas Clegg
Mordred is a gay man who takes Lancelot as a lover. (I haven’t read this one but the plot focuses on queerness.)
The Queen’s Knight by Marvin Borowsky
Mordred is a rival warlord of Arthur who expresses attraction to men throughout the book & takes Calogrenant as a lover. (Content warning for pederasty.)
The Fox and The Bear by L. A. Wilson
Medraut is a soldier in Arthur’s army & romantic rival of Bedwyr for his love. (I didn’t like this series but it’s queer.)
Arthur The King by Allan Massie
Mordred is asexual, described a few ways on a scale from “chaste mastering of desire” to “feeling little desire.” (This book isn’t good but amusing at times.)
I’m sure there are more out there, but this is what I’ve encountered that had explicitly queer Mordred as a focus. I hope this answers your question and gives you some stuff to check out. Take care!

Arthur’s most loyal knight Lancelot is the same age as Sonic and a single parent, who is struggling with his sudden loneliness as his son Galahad has recently moved away. Sonic is enthralled by him, since he’s something that Shadow isn’t; mortal. Given their position as king and his bodyguard, the two quickly become close, closer than their titles would suggest in fact.
Now Sonic is struggling with his new duties and expectations – ones that he didn’t really even ask for in the first place. In the midst of it all, he’s trying to keep his newly blossomed relationship a secret, while also adapting to yet another new, unexpected title; stepfather.

mordred through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
Part 5: From 2018 to 2023 (and 2024)
Other Parts: Part 1: From 1949 to 1981 -> here Part 2: From 1982 to 2002 -> here Part 3: From 2002 to 2010 -> here Part 4: From 2014 to 2017 -> here
For this last part I wanted to talk a bit about queer Mordred!
First of all, Mordred is one of the main characters who is written as LGBTQ in novels and other media. My arthurian excel list of queer arthurian characters (arthurian list of everything, in the LGBTQ sheet) is up to a few years ago, but the numbers seem to be: LGBTQ Lancelot in 16 media, Arthur in 13 media which is equal to Mordred who is also LGBTQ in 13 media (two being interpretations: White's "The once and future king" and "Fall of Camelot" fromt he Time Life books). Most of these are, of course, novels, with the first ever appearance of LGBTQ Mordred in 1956 Borowsky's novel "The Queen's knight", where Mordred is a gay man. Then in 1982 Cherryh's "Port Eternity" has asexual Mordred, even if the characters could be debated on how arthurian they are. We then jump to 1997 with the short story "The Pretender" by Stephen Dedman, with mlm Mordred.
2005 "A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court" by Mari Mancusi (gay Mordred) 2006 "Mordred bastard son" by Douglas Clegg (gay Mordred) 2008 "The Silurian series" by Wilson (gay Mordred) 2012 "The Prince and the Program" by Mercer (bisexual Mordred) 2014 "Mordred and the king" by Curlovich (gay Mordred)
In movies, shows and musicals instead we could consider 2008 musical Mordred the first iteration of queer Mordred (part 3). This is of course an interpretation and it might probably just be a case of queer-coding of villains that reminds of Disney movies. Still, there is no doubt Bobby Steggert, who is an out gay actor (at the time, now he is a therapist) played an obvious queer coded Mordred.
It is only in 2014 that we have an explicit LGBTQ Mordred with "High Noon over Camelot" which also for the first time ever introduces Mordred as a trans man. From 2017 we also get introduced to Fate's Mordred (Fate/Aprocrypha and subsequient movies and stage shows) whose gender has always been a debated topic. I already talked about it in part 4, but Mordred in Fate is definitely written as a non binary character. In 2018 the webseries "The Campaign for Camelot" has Mordred as a protagonist and mlm, with a romance as well (another male character in the show). The last time we saw Mordred with a romance was back in the 60s, in the movie "Sword of Lancelot"!
I think the most interesting thing is that Mordred is without a doubt the character who is the most interpreted as LGBTQ in movies and tv shows. From memory, the only other characters are Morgana (in the Netflix's "Cursed", webseries "Legend" and "The Campaign for Camelot"), Lancelot (in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "High Noon over Camelot" and "Spamalot"), Galahad (in Josh Ritter's song "Galahad"), Arthur ("High noon over Camelot") and Merlin (webseries "Legend").
2018 Arthur et les enfants de la Table Ronde: This is a two-seasons French animated show that narrates the adventures of Arthur, an orphan kid living in Uther's kingdom. The show has other arthurian characters as kids (Guinevere, Gawain, Sagramore, Morgana) and Mordred himself is also a kid. Morgause and Igraine (Morgana's sisters) are the main villain and Mordred (their cousin) is also a villain. The voice from the clip is from the Italian dub but the original French voice actor was Ricardo Richter.
2018 The Campaign for Camelot (webseries): This websites (you can watch it here) is a complete 78 short episodes series where different modern arthurian characters decide to run for the school board against Arthur's wishes. Mordred is one of the main protagonists and he is introduced in episode 7. Over the series he also develops a romance with Izzy (Iddawg, from “The Dream of Rhonabwy”). To clarify, in the clip Mordred is the guy without the glasses and the darker shirt! And he is played by Dylan Martin.
2018/2019 OSK's Knights of the Round Table musical: This clip is from a recording but a dvd also exists. OSK is a Japanese theater company of all women. Mordred was interpreted by Momo Mika. The story of the musical follows the classical Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot triangle with Mordred appearing (as Arthur's son) in the second part of the story.
2020 Arthur and Merlin: Knights of Camelot: A much less exciting movie than I expected, focusing on Arthur trying to reclaim Camelot after Mordred betrays him. Mordred (played by Joel Phillimore) plays Arthur's son and the villain of the story. He often uses threats of sexual violence towards Guinevere.
2020 Fate/Grand Order the movie: Camelot: Another installment in the Fate series. This movie is set in the Grand Order timeline (different from Apocrypha), but Mordred is still a very similar character and they are still voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. The original title is Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot 1 - Wandering; Agateram as in 2020 only part 1 released. Part 2 is called Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot - Paladin; Agateram and was released in 2021. Basically part one is Wandering Agateram and part two is Paladin Agateram. Different from other Fate series, this one is set in the past (in 1273 A.D.).
2021 Fate/Grand Order: The Grand Temple of Time: Another movie based on the videogame Fate/Grand Order... please do not ask me the plot, I just know Mordred is not as present here as in the previous movie or as in Fate/Apocrypha.
2021 Le Roi Arthus opera: This is a 1895 opera written by Ernest Chausson and sung in French. I already talked about it before, just know this is the most recent iteration of it and the only video we have of the opera performed in arthurian clothes (the previous filmed performance was a modernization). Mordred was played by baritone Justin Austin.
2023 Camelot Revival: The return of the musical Camelot! There are a few bootlegs around (at least 4 of them) if you want to watch it, but I am not allowed to share them. Still, I got them from asking a gift on the reddit BootlegsGifts. As I still have to watch it I cannot comment on any possible difference here, just know this version was extremely successful. Mordred is played by Taylor Trensch, and Hawley Gould was his understudy (not in audio).

Do you have any headcanons for Lancelot and Sixtus? I have a feeling that they get along really well.
Not many headcanons for them actually. I doubt King & Diane visit Ban with their kids that often, considering they had 7 of them and an 8th growing up in Echo Gorge, so here's a linear list following that path:
Before Lancelot and Jericho disappeared, Ban visited the Fairy Realm with Lancelot and Elaine every one to few years. He always found some new way to tease a complaint about the realm's sickly sweet air to Harlequin. The Fairy King is always offended. Even as kings, these two bicker like cats and dogs.
When it was just Myrtel and Sixtus, Lancelot liked Myrtel more. Sixtus was so quiet all the time, and Lancelot liked playfighting more bc of his human half.
Since there was a new Kiane kid or few every visit the first few times, Lancelot thought fairy kids multiply asexually over time and called them "Myrtle 2", "Myrtel 5", etc.
During Lancelot's last visit before disappearing, Sixtus got pissed over those names. Lancelot had to learn where fairy/giant babies come from that day.
He was told he needed to have a heart-to-heart talk with Sixtus to fix things...and Lance took that literally.
They had their talk entirely through heart reading and Lancelot gets Sixtus after it.
If you ask why they're "making faces at each other", they'll both say they're "having a heart-to-heart". Yes they keep talking to each other like that ever since.
One day King tried joining in for the fun and the looks they gave him made him never want to try again. He doesn't even listen when they do that anymore, not even in the story's present day.

Book Shout-outs for Pride Month #2:
Asexual edition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Row One: Stand-Alones:
Asexual Fairy Tales by Elizabeth Hopkinson: Exactly what it says on the tin, a collection of asexual fairy tale retellings. Hopkinson has written two more collections like this.
Space Cadets by Robin Banks: In a dystopian future, five cadets are the only survivors of a cruel space battle. They take their ship and run, and have to consequently figure out, what to do next.
Baker Thief by Claudie Arsenault: New in the city, a police officer chases after a thief who broke into her home and stole her expensive power source, only to stumble on a conspiracy.
Row Two: Series with two books:
The King's Peace/The King's Name (Sulien series) by Jo Walton: Arthurian retelling set in an alternate universe. The main character and narrator is the equivalent of our Sir Lancelot, the King's best and most trusted general. She narrates the story from their first meeting to after his death.
Dread Nation/Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland: Alternate history where the American Civil War ended in a zombie apocalypse, and people of color are being forced to fight the zombies. The asexual character, Katherine, is there from the beginning on, but only becomes a POV character in the second book.
Row Three: Series with more than two books:
The Dreamhealers series by M.C.A Hogarth: In a space fantasy world with many different species living together in harmony, it follows the lives of two psychology students (later doctors), who form a mental link and become platonic life partners.
The Margin Street Zeroes series by Robin Banks: Follows the lives of three (later four) very broke, very neurodivergent and very queer university students who are also harassed by gods and magic. They form a found family that actively defies societal expectations. The asexual storyline only starts in book 3, but one of the two asexual characters, Ben, is there all along. The other, AK, also only joins in book 3.
I probably could scratch together some more, especially if I add in my TBR list, but these are my go-tos.

BBC Merlin Characters and Their Pride Flags:
Based on my own headcanons, obviously.
Merlin: Panromantic Asexual! (I can also see him being elsewhere on the ace-spec…maybe even demi if I really stretch)
Tumblr media
Arthur: Bi Polyamorous Demisexual! I actually didn’t see him as being ace-spec until series 5, but then I remembered the most salacious he ever was, was under a love spell…so.
Tumblr media
Morgana: Lesbian Demiromantic! (I promise some of them won’t be a-spec, but not this girl) She needs that bond, she needs that ride-or-die 🤌
Tumblr media
Guinevere: Polyamorous Bisexual! Of course she is, she’s the most lovely and she loves everyone and everyone loves her 💖
Tumblr media
Leon: Aromantic Asexual! I know it’s been said before and I can only agree; the only time he seemed interested was under an enchantment.
Tumblr media
Lancelot: Polyromantic Biromantic!? Let me explain, I think he’s in love with Gwen, Merlin, & Arthur. But I think he wants to sleep with Gwen 🤷 so his d!ck is kinda het, but his brain isn’t…I need to stop.
Tumblr media
Gwaine: Bisexual Greyromantic! He’s a bicon and he’s in love with Merlin, sorry I don’t make the rules.
Tumblr media
Elyan: Transgender! This is just how I see him <3
Tumblr media
Percival: Pansexual! He’s here for good vibes from good people and for being loved 🥹
Tumblr media
Anyways…I’ve been wanting to do this since I started watching series 1 :)

Seven Deadly Sins Headcanons - Pride Month Edition
With it being Pride Month, I figured I might as well indulge my aroace self. So here are the, according to my headcanons, queers!
Seven Deadly Sins
Ban, Elaine, Meliodas, and Elizabeth - They're all demisexual and demiromantic. Elaine's genderfae, or her gender touches everything that isn't masculine. Tad unrelated but Ban struggled with his own masculinity for a while because when people talked of what made a man a man, they typically spouted toxic masculinity bullshit but he eventually came to a conclusion on what being a man meant to him.
Gowther - Asexual, panromantic, and agender but prefers he/him since that's what he's always been referred to with. "But he had SeX with Nadja!". Well, people can have sex without sexual attraction. To him, it was just another way to express his love for her.
Lancelot - Aroace. And since I ship him with Anne and Donny, I headcanon him to be in a QPR with them. He's not really sex or romance repulsed.
Donny - The D in Donny stands for bi Disaster. He looked at Anne and Lancelot and just had an 'OH NO THEY'RE HOT' moment. He was the first to confess his feelings. His bi awakening was when he heard Lancelot singing (I hc he has a wonderful singing voice).
Anne - Pansexual and demiromantic. She has tried and failed many a time to bridal carry her boyfriends. She also thinks Lancelot would look drop dead gorgeous if he grew out his hair.
Percival - Pansexual/Panromantic. He loves peppering Nasiens with kisses
Nasiens - Intersex, but identifies as a man. Also, gay gay homosexual gay.
