Tolkien: writes fantasy books with ace/aro coded main characters, very little romance and no sex scenes
His works become the most successful and respected books in the fantasy community
So no, having romance and sex is not a must have if you want to write a good story. The dragons are

if bagginshield is canon I win. if bagginshield is not canon then Thorin "had no wife" Oakenshield and Bilbo "confirmed bachelor" Baggins are aroace icons and I still win.

What happens with aroace coded characters in fandoms that really annoys me:
Frodo Baggins: never involved in a relationship, loves his friends — fandom: he’s so in love with Sam, he even lets him and his family live with him
Bilbo Baggins: never married, dedicates his life to writing, adopts Frodo and loves him like a son — fandom: I ship him with Thorin so much
Sherlock Holmes: dedicated his life to his work, very loyal to his friends, never married or had a real relationship — fandom: he’s in love with Irene! He’s in love with John!
Aziraphale & Crowley: canonically ace according to the book, poster characters for a qpr — fandom: why don’t they just f**k? Why don’t they just k**s? This is queerbaiting!
There are probably more examples because it’s definitely a pattern.

Are Bilbo and Frodo known as bachelors because they have no game or because they’re gay?

It’s really interesting how confirmed bachelor Bilbo Baggins is a much more popular asexual headcanon than mr no wife or kids Thorin Oakenshield who has just as much reason to be ace as Bilbo does

Asexual and ace-adjacent Tolkien headcanons (assuming I'm deviating from my default of "all Elves are ace and/or demi"):
Maedhros: Aroace and sex repulsed. Does not get it, does not want it, is grossed out by the whole concept. Hates hearing about Maglor's sexcapades. Is the #1 recipient of Maglor sexcapade stories.
Lalwen: Aroace and sex neutral. She can take it or leave it and most often she leaves it. It lacks a compelling emotional component for her and most often she just finds it kind of boring. She would rather be kicking your ass at lacrosse.
Daeron: Panromantic asexual and does enjoy casual sex, but is very picky about the encounter. Absolutely will not engage with oral, giving or receiving, and if you push this boundary at all he will throw you out immediately, first and foremost because you can't follow directions thereby proving your intellectual insufficiency.
Frodo: Ace king. Sex neutral leaning towards sex repulsed. It simply does not hold any interest for him. He likes other forms of physical affection and most of all he loves chilling with a loved one working at separate activities together.
Melian: My personal feeling is that all Ainur lack any sexual feelings of any kind. However, she knows how much value physical beings place on intimacy of the body, and she likes making Thingol feel good. Also, he will let her do literally anything at least once, and she enjoys experimenting.
Finduilas: Panromantic asexual. She'll do it, but only if she's super into you and trusts you a lot. Mostly she prefers kissing and touching to the actual sex bit, but orgasms do briefly distract her from stressing about the state of Middle-earth.
Morwen: The only person Morwen has ever remotely even considered allowing to touch her that way was Hurin (for the most part she does not enjoy being touched at all). Got quite solid at blowjobs because she generally does not enjoy PIV. Rarely orgasms, but when she does it usually puts her to sleep for several hours. Hurin was very understanding and quite flexible in accommodating Morwen's boundaries.
Bilbo: Aroace all the way, eternal bachelor by his own choosing. Has never personally engaged with sex or romance because he simply never felt the urge to "give it a try." The most interest he has in these things is gossiping about other people's experiences.
Thranduil: Pan ace. If you want to handle the royal jewels you better put a ring on it first, because he will not accept any lower level of commitment. Does enjoy the emotional intimacy of getting physical with a committed partner.

Pride Month Aspec Headcanons Day 25
Bilbo Baggins - The Hobbit / LOTR - Aroace
Canonically never gets married, I love that for him. It might be because I read the Hobbit for the first time in 5th grade, but also probably just because it just fits him. He's always been an aroace icon to me.
Tbh, I don't have many notes for Bilbo either. He's an icon, that's for sure. And Middle Earth could always do with some aroace icons there, too.
If you've got anything to say about aroace Bilbo, feel free to add on!

this is about my ace Bilbo headcanon.
First point: I do love the bagginshield dynamic and concept. Romantically or platonically, it is a compelling relationship arc to me. Naturally, I love to read bagginshield fics because I can indulge my love of their dynamic.
Second point: I see Bilbo as so unequivocally, absolutely asexual that when I read bagginshield fics where Bilbo is sexually attracted to someone, my brain goes “this is not correct.”
Third point: This does not exclude aesthetic attraction! I love that stuff! I read fics recently where Bilbo fell in love with Thorin, and he admired Thorin’s features and muscles and things. Admiration that is aesthetic-driven and non-sexual feels more accurate to Bilbo for me. So I’m all for Bilbo admiring people’s pretty looks and even going heart-eyed at how beautiful someone is.

Bilbo Baggins is the asexual icon
He lived in solitude and peace for 50 years. And he was happy doing that. Then he went on an adventure with a group of dwarves and a wizard, and came back not with a bride but with a group of friends and a treasure. He was happy to live alone for the rest of his life, smoking, eating, writing stories and pulling pranks on his relatives. Then he adopted his nephew because he wanted to. And as an old man he pulled his last prank and went on another adventure because he felt like that. Bilbo was a legend.
Also, I heard that Tolkien had a plan to make Frodo Bilbo's son but he couldn't see Bilbo as a married hobbit.

Things about me that clicked after I discovered that I’m not only asexual but also aromantic:
how I’ve always wanted a relationship and then didn’t know what to do in one
why the relationships never worked out for me
why I find romance books boring after reading two or free in a row
how I always felt that I would prefer to be in a relationship in ‘advanced’ stage where everything is comfortable and steady instead of the romantic beginning
how I never understood what people meant when they said they want Aziraphale and Crowley to be something more than they were in the show
how I never understood why finding a partner is the ultimate life goal
how I never understood why people said that some things and activities were better enjoyed with a loved one
why my dream date is eating together or doing some parallel activity like reading simultaneously
why Bilbo and Frodo Baggins being single and not interested in dating was always so appealing
why what I assumed was a fictional crush was actually me liking a character because they liked literature and art
how I never understood the phrase ‘love at first sight’ and how it made me icky because of the assumption that you could fall in love because somebody is pretty
how I always said that it would be okay for me to live in separate bedrooms with my partner
why I never understood why people would want to take part in programs like ‘Love Island’ or ‘Too Hot to Handle’

I saw a poll from like a million years ago about who in the fellowship had the most sexual experience pre-quest and I had to give my hot takes, so here they are, least to most
9. Frodo: Frodo came dead last in the poll with 0.5% of the vote and I completely agree, known poetry virgin Frodo Baggins has never fucked or sucked in his life. He DOES know what sex is, but only because he accidentally discovered Bilbo's secret stash of freaky elvenporn. the only person who thinks frodo has ever gotten laid is sam, who is incapable of realizing that not everyone is as cock-throttlingly erect for frodo as he is at all times
8. Pippin: the asexual friend who's constantly making horny jokes
7. Sam: could've been absolutely slangin it back in the shire, but he's a good catholic who's waiting until hobbit-marriage
6. Boromir: would've gotten laid more often if he didn't insist on taking women home to meet his father when things started getting serious (also he shoots his shot with aragorn one time but it goes nowhere because he's bewitched by elfussy, so he spends the rest of his life denying his bisexuality, also limiting sex opportunities)
5. Merry: brandybucks brandyFUCK, you know he was out there slutting it up, probably having sex in boats like some kind of freak
4. Legolas: Putting him higher than Merry solely because he's lived about a thousand times longer. proportionate to lifespan, I don't think he fucks as much, but just by the numbers, any given elf has probably fucked out of boredom more often than the horniest hobbit fucks in their life
3. Gimli: a chad among dwarves, gets more cooch than he knows what to do with, dicks down on the daily, the only reason he isn't mid-orgy 24/7 is because he's busy with noble courtly duties
2. Aragorn: this man fucks like a wild dog and I will not hear otherwise, have you ever had dick so good you gave up immortality for it??? yeah, didn't think so. he has laid pipe in every square inch of rivendell multiple times, not to mention many furious woodland fuckfests (with arwen, with his grizzled old ranger buddies, sometimes at the same time. she matches his freak)
Gandalf: he fucks on a level no mortal and only a select few number of immortals can possibly even begin to comprehend. he had sex with the balrog probably too

Thorin Oakenshield is an asexual icon and I’m tired of not talking about it.
I mean obviously he’s aroace in the book, I think that’s a given since it’s the least romantic mainstream book ever
But I’m talking about movie Thorin. Movie Thorin who looks at one Bilbo Baggins with so much love and aching tenderness yet without an ounce of lust. He looks so utterly fond of Bilbo and of his nephews all the time. They are his family, they complete him. That man doesn’t need sex to feel fulfilled. Slay.
