Tolkien: writes fantasy books with ace/aro coded main characters, very little romance and no sex scenes
His works become the most successful and respected books in the fantasy community
So no, having romance and sex is not a must have if you want to write a good story. The dragons are

What happens with aroace coded characters in fandoms that really annoys me:
Frodo Baggins: never involved in a relationship, loves his friends — fandom: he’s so in love with Sam, he even lets him and his family live with him
Bilbo Baggins: never married, dedicates his life to writing, adopts Frodo and loves him like a son — fandom: I ship him with Thorin so much
Sherlock Holmes: dedicated his life to his work, very loyal to his friends, never married or had a real relationship — fandom: he’s in love with Irene! He’s in love with John!
Aziraphale & Crowley: canonically ace according to the book, poster characters for a qpr — fandom: why don’t they just f**k? Why don’t they just k**s? This is queerbaiting!
There are probably more examples because it’s definitely a pattern.

Are Bilbo and Frodo known as bachelors because they have no game or because they’re gay?

It’s really interesting how confirmed bachelor Bilbo Baggins is a much more popular asexual headcanon than mr no wife or kids Thorin Oakenshield who has just as much reason to be ace as Bilbo does

There isn't enough acknowledgment of how fantastic LoTR and The Hobbit are in terms of asexual representation.
What do you mean Bilbo never married, but still adopted his nephew and enjoyed his little family and was surrounded by friends? What do you mean Thorin remained single and unattached for his whole nearly 200 years of living? What do you mean Frodo took after Bilbo and remained single his whole life? What do you mean these characters exist, and no one bats an eye at their choices??

Asexual and ace-adjacent Tolkien headcanons (assuming I'm deviating from my default of "all Elves are ace and/or demi"):
Maedhros: Aroace and sex repulsed. Does not get it, does not want it, is grossed out by the whole concept. Hates hearing about Maglor's sexcapades. Is the #1 recipient of Maglor sexcapade stories.
Lalwen: Aroace and sex neutral. She can take it or leave it and most often she leaves it. It lacks a compelling emotional component for her and most often she just finds it kind of boring. She would rather be kicking your ass at lacrosse.
Daeron: Panromantic asexual and does enjoy casual sex, but is very picky about the encounter. Absolutely will not engage with oral, giving or receiving, and if you push this boundary at all he will throw you out immediately, first and foremost because you can't follow directions thereby proving your intellectual insufficiency.
Frodo: Ace king. Sex neutral leaning towards sex repulsed. It simply does not hold any interest for him. He likes other forms of physical affection and most of all he loves chilling with a loved one working at separate activities together.
Melian: My personal feeling is that all Ainur lack any sexual feelings of any kind. However, she knows how much value physical beings place on intimacy of the body, and she likes making Thingol feel good. Also, he will let her do literally anything at least once, and she enjoys experimenting.
Finduilas: Panromantic asexual. She'll do it, but only if she's super into you and trusts you a lot. Mostly she prefers kissing and touching to the actual sex bit, but orgasms do briefly distract her from stressing about the state of Middle-earth.
Morwen: The only person Morwen has ever remotely even considered allowing to touch her that way was Hurin (for the most part she does not enjoy being touched at all). Got quite solid at blowjobs because she generally does not enjoy PIV. Rarely orgasms, but when she does it usually puts her to sleep for several hours. Hurin was very understanding and quite flexible in accommodating Morwen's boundaries.
Bilbo: Aroace all the way, eternal bachelor by his own choosing. Has never personally engaged with sex or romance because he simply never felt the urge to "give it a try." The most interest he has in these things is gossiping about other people's experiences.
Thranduil: Pan ace. If you want to handle the royal jewels you better put a ring on it first, because he will not accept any lower level of commitment. Does enjoy the emotional intimacy of getting physical with a committed partner.
#mine#sometimes being ace is difficult#but then I remember I can make blorbos asexual too and that's fun#tolkien tag#maedhros#lalwen#daeron#frodo baggins#bilbo baggins#melian#thranduil#morwen#finduilas#the silmarillion#lotr#the hobbit

My aro/ace hc's
this list includes the many fandoms I am or have been part of
Jo March (Little Women): Louisa May Alcott had Jo marry bc the book wouldn't publish otherwise, so she had her marry Friedrich to jab at the publishers. That aside, Jo's relationships with both him and Laurie are more platonic, and she values her freedom and writing (yes women were expected to marry & had not rights then but it's my headcanon). It would be interesting to see an adaptation with Jo and Friedrich in a queer platonic relationship though
Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit/Lotr): old bachelor who went on an adventure and came back richer and crazier in the eyes of the Shire. Strong familial and platonic bonds as shown with him adopting Frodo and his friendship with Gandalf, Elrond, etc.
Yelena Belova (MCU): I think this is semi-confirmed but she's one of my favorite characters so on the list she goes. Also when she talks about her fantasy life to Natasha she says "I want a dog" but gave Natasha a husband and kids
Beth March (Little Women): I've seen some adaptations and fanfics with Beth being a lesbian, so I give you ace lesbian Beth! More than once it's mentioned that she's uncomfortable around most men and she's more than happy being with her family, cats, and piano
Merida (Brave): this was one of my favorite movies because I loved that Merida chose her own path and didn't have a love interest. Also she's an archer so that fits with aromantic, plus her colors fit with the aromantic and aroace flag!
Hestia (Greek Mythology): enough said. She quickly became one of my favorite Greek gods when I first got into mythology (and i grew up realizing im asexual lol)
Frodo Baggins yep another repeat (LotR): it just feels right. I really like SamFro either romantically or platonically
Mousefur (Warriors Series): pretty sure she said something to the extent of "that's why I never mated" at one point and I always liked her even though she was a background character
I thought this would be longer but I ran out of headcanons lol. Happy Valentine's Day and feel free to comment your own aroace hc's!!

Bilbo Baggins is the asexual icon
He lived in solitude and peace for 50 years. And he was happy doing that. Then he went on an adventure with a group of dwarves and a wizard, and came back not with a bride but with a group of friends and a treasure. He was happy to live alone for the rest of his life, smoking, eating, writing stories and pulling pranks on his relatives. Then he adopted his nephew because he wanted to. And as an old man he pulled his last prank and went on another adventure because he felt like that. Bilbo was a legend.
Also, I heard that Tolkien had a plan to make Frodo Bilbo's son but he couldn't see Bilbo as a married hobbit.

Pride Month Aspec Headcanons Day 25
Bilbo Baggins - The Hobbit / LOTR - Aroace
Canonically never gets married, I love that for him. It might be because I read the Hobbit for the first time in 5th grade, but also probably just because it just fits him. He's always been an aroace icon to me.
Tbh, I don't have many notes for Bilbo either. He's an icon, that's for sure. And Middle Earth could always do with some aroace icons there, too.
If you've got anything to say about aroace Bilbo, feel free to add on!

Things about me that clicked after I discovered that I’m not only asexual but also aromantic:
how I’ve always wanted a relationship and then didn’t know what to do in one
why the relationships never worked out for me
why I find romance books boring after reading two or free in a row
how I always felt that I would prefer to be in a relationship in ‘advanced’ stage where everything is comfortable and steady instead of the romantic beginning
how I never understood what people meant when they said they want Aziraphale and Crowley to be something more than they were in the show
how I never understood why finding a partner is the ultimate life goal
how I never understood why people said that some things and activities were better enjoyed with a loved one
why my dream date is eating together or doing some parallel activity like reading simultaneously
why Bilbo and Frodo Baggins being single and not interested in dating was always so appealing
why what I assumed was a fictional crush was actually me liking a character because they liked literature and art
how I never understood the phrase ‘love at first sight’ and how it made me icky because of the assumption that you could fall in love because somebody is pretty
how I always said that it would be okay for me to live in separate bedrooms with my partner
why I never understood why people would want to take part in programs like ‘Love Island’ or ‘Too Hot to Handle’

this can apply to fanfics too btw. imagine you've got characters in a platonic or a queerplatonic relationship and you want to show physical affection between them but you can't write smut for them because you don't think the characters would want to have sex with eachother... that's where queerplatonic foreplay comes in. And if you've written lots of slash fics before then this could be a really fun new concept to explore in your writing.
oh and for those who don't know, a queerplatonic relationship (qpr) is basically a platonic relationship that may look like a romantic one from an outside perspective (because the people in the relationship express their platonic love by doing actions that society usually views as romantic such as picnic dates, kissing, buying flowers for eachother and so on). it's also important to note that the acts that look romantic in the relationship will differ depending on the qpr and what the people in one are comfortable. for example, one qpr might be comfortable with kissing while a different qpr isn't because qprs can all look different depending on who is in them and what they like to do.
another fun thing about writing qprs is that you get to explore how differently a qpr looks for your favourite characters and how they would act in one compared to other characters. its just another interesting way to explore intimacy
but yeah, if you're a writer, this could be a fun concept to explore in your fics (if you write one, reply with the link for everyone)
hear me out.... queerplatonic foreplay
