Jaskier buys Geralt a weighted blanket for when he “can’t fuckin’ sleep”...
Geralt wasn’t sleeping.
In fact, he hadn’t slept for - well, Jaskier had lost count, if he was honest. When Geralt didn’t sleep, he became more curmudgeonly than usual and we all know how that ended last time, don’t we, dear reader?
They tried everything. Lullabies, sleeping decoctions - laughable really, Geralt commented on a small moment of dizziness and then nothing - and sex. Lots of it. In fact, Jaskier’s cock was raw by the time they gave up; Geralt was beyond even his usual orgasm followed by instantaneous torpor trick.
There was more to it than normal. Geralt was anxious - fidgety - he found the smells and noises of civilisation borderline intolerable. Stays in taverns and inns were a kind of sensory torture, but the weather was turning and endless nights on the road until winter were out of the question.
It was becoming unbearable.
A day didn’t go by without an argument and the bags under Geralt’s eyes were so big he could use them as extra storage for alchemy ingredients. He looked drained - gaunt - and his shortness was beginning to impact his dealings with contractors. Usually the paragon of professionalism, he told one man to shove his drowner infestation up his ass if he thought a Witcher would work for that shit amount of money.
Jaskier had all but given up hope when he stumbled across a solution in the most unlikely of places.
Dorndal was a small town in the northernmost part of Temeria. It was relatively untouched by the ongoing war in terms of land and buildings, but it bore its scars in a different way. The orphanage was filled to the brim. Orphans of war. Wounded, traumatised.
Jaskier spoke to the matron as she took lunch in the local inn and she told him about their screaming nightmares; their ‘jitters’, as she called them, during the day - a kind of frantic, anxious energy - and their constant mood swings. Most of them maintained a baseline of morose detachment, and rejected comfort as if they believed they didn’t deserve it. They mourned the loss of their loved ones, were haunted by what they’d seen and saw no path other than the one they’d been forced onto by fate.
Jaskier’s heart fell through the bottom of his chest.
His next question felt almost futile in the face of such an explanation, but he asked anyway. “H-how do you help them?”
“Love, an’ understandin’, and then durin’ the night we give them these weighted blankets,” she smiled; most of her teeth were missing and those that remained were yellowed and rotten. Life in the countryside was brutal and short. “Somethin’ about the weight of it. Takes their fears right away and they sleep soundly. Well, it helps. Still a few blips here and there. We also plug their ears, ‘cause every slight little sound startles ‘em awake. Takes trust though.”
“Weighted blankets?” Jaskier squinted. “Where can I purchase one?”
“Hmm, the local seamstress can mock you one up in a jiffy. She always keeps the materials on hand,” the matron sighed sadly. “We get new young’uns in every day. More young’uns, more blankets needed. She’ll give you some material good for pluggin’ ears if yer lil’un is havin’ troubles.”
The seamstress was a lovely lass with ample hips, a nest of bright red hair and the most enchanting blue eyes Jaskier had ever had the pleasure of looking up-- no, here for Geralt. We’re here for Geralt. As he walked away with the blanket tucked beneath his arm - damn, it really was quite hefty - he cast her one last wistful glance. In another life, darling.
It took a little bit of cajoling to get Geralt to agree to sleep under a roof for the night. He only caved when Jaskier explained that the beds were actually lice free and he’d tasted the ale himself; not a single ounce of piss in it. How could Geralt possibly turn down such a treat? They ended up purchasing a double room with two beds. Jaskier played a few of his hits to make up for the expenditure, but he was distracted by the brooding presence that had secluded himself in the very corner of the tavern.
Geralt devoured his stew in record time and drank the ale so quickly Jaskier was certain he must’ve poured half of it on the floor. And then he was gone. Fleeing upstairs with as much despondent dignity as he could. It didn’t take long after that for the tavern to begin emptying; it was late, Jaskier’s setlist finished and he filled his palm with the few tips thrown his way.
When he arrived in their room, Geralt was bathed and attending to some of his equipment in the corner. The blanket wasn’t where Jaskier had left it, which meant the Witcher had pawed at it curiously but left it otherwise unmolested.
“Geralt, I bought you a new - umm, a new blanket. I’d like to see if it helps.”
“Is it enchanted? You know magic is unpredictable around Witchers, Jaskier.”
“No. Just…a blanket. It’s a little heavier than normal.”
“Hmm.” Geralt had noticed.
“I was talking to a woman who runs the orphanage and she says it helps some of the children sleep, and - umm - .” He trailed off as he saw the raised eyebrow, the thin-set lips, the crease down the centre of his forehead. That expression meant: you’re an idiot. “Look, at least try it. Are you tired?”
Smooth brow. Wider eyes. Faint frown. I’m always tired. Alright, we were now non-verbal. This was bad. Geralt was running seriously low on every mental, physical and emotional faculty. Completely fine. Jaskier knew how to communicate with his Witcher when he literally couldn’t find the words through the haze.
Jaskier walked across the room and took Geralt gently by the hand; he helped him out of his clothes - granted, not in the fervent, passionate way he usually did - and coaxed him down onto the mattress. It was slightly softer than the norm. This place was a bloody luxury, Jaskier needed to mark it down on a map for future reference - no, wait, Geralt. Focus, bard, focus. “Right. Just lay here, that’s it. Comfy?”
Raised eyebrow, slight tilt to the head. Yes, and getting impatient.
“Right, good, good.” Jaskier shed his own doublet, breeches and boots before grabbing the blanket. Please work, please work, please work. Geralt was staring at the ceiling now, his forehead creased and his jaw working as he lost himself to some endless chain of anxious thoughts, so Jaskier carefully unfolded the heavy material over his Witcher, tugging it high up his chest, before settling down at his side. “Ahh, and last ingredient. I’m going to put these in your ears.” He grabbed the two little knots of material.
“I won’t be able to hear.” Geralt murmured, face crumpled in concern.
“No. But it’s alright, Geralt. I will, and I won’t let anything happen. I promise.”
Trust me.
The silence hung heavily. Blue eyes locked with golden ones. Anxiety coiled in Jaskier’s chest as he realised that, if Geralt refused, then it said far too much about the distance they still had between them after all these years. The tension unspooled in a relieved sigh when the Witcher ducked his chin in a brief nod and tilted his head so that Jaskier could insert the ear plugs.
And then he settled at Geralt’s side. One hand played through the halo of white hair splashed out of the pillow, and then rested lightly on his shoulder. Jaskier kept his breathing level and tried not to watch too intently. The tavern was quiet - almost silent - but without the ear plugs Geralt would be able to hear the rats scratching in the walls, the voices of the neighbouring patrons and maybe even the couple having a very good time in the stables outside.
For a while, Jaskier believed his efforts had come to nought. Geralt stared at the ceiling, occasionally glancing at him from the corner of his eye to make sure he was still there - reassurance - but otherwise remained alert and tense. The first sign of impact came when Geralt lifted a hand slowly and gripped his medallion; it was the same thing he did when he was double-checking for magical interference. Jaskier smiled into the crook of his elbow to hide it. Something was having an impact. Geralt was always suspicious of new experiences. It was a natural level of wariness that evolved after enough betrayals and sour encounters.
Slowly, slowly, Geralt’s eyes grew heavy. Jaskier watched as they flickered once or twice before finally giving in to the building pressure behind them; the creases of stress and exhaustion smoothed out from Geralt’s forehead, and the hand resting over his medallion loosened until his arm slipped onto the bed. His breathing levelled and his jaw slackened.
Jaskier clenched his teeth to prevent his lap of honour around the room, and nestled close.
Geralt didn’t wake once during the night.
The following morning, Jaskier noted that the blanket had been carefully rolled up and secured next to their bedrolls on Roach’s back. Geralt detached one of the bags from her side and hesitated, “Would you mind carrying this? I don’t want to strain her.”
Jaskier beamed and pulled the bag onto his shoulder. “For you, dear heart. Anything.”
For the first time in sleepless months, Geralt smiled.

I feel like Netflix messed up a little with Jaskier and Geralt’s relationship. Wiedzmin was a delight, and the books (that portion of them i’ve been able to get through) even the games (ive only watched gameplays but still) all have a better relationship.
Watching the netflix tv series, i have to fill their relationship in in my head because I know the character of Jaskier/dandelion is a good one with a close relationship with geralt, but they mostly show him being pushy.
I really like writing Geralt and Jaskier, (especially because theres a definite ASD + ADHD dynamic there) but my Jaskier is more of dandelion, and always will be, because Netflix gave us so little and almost no actual characterization
(PS dont hate me, this isnt a criticism of the actors, any pairings, or any of the other works, but Netflix decided that their mountain issue would be a big scene without giving it the proper emotional background so then I go and do the emotional legwork in my fic)

I'm going to muse aloud for a moment here, if I may.
I consume a lot of content here on Tumblr: the stunning artworks, beautifully crafted fanfiction, hilarious memes, and thought-provoking articles.
But I'd like to focus on the fandom-related content for a moment.
I first discovered fanfiction in the final years of the 20th century, when I was a teenage boy coming to terms with the fact that I was almost certainly gay.
We didn't have Internet p0rn back then (or, if we did, I was convinced it would infect my parents' computer with a very telling virus, and the cat would be out of the bag), so reading slash or m/m fics, gave me my, well, fix.
The thing is, I'm now nearly forty, and, despite having access to p0rnhub in the comfort of my own home, I STILL find myself drawn to OTPs.
The fandoms have changed over the years: Wolverine/Gambit was replaced by Aragorn/Legolas, which in turn was replaced by Snape/Lupin, John/Sherlock, Dean/Castiel, and many more in between, until now when I'm following all tags related to Geralt/Jaskier and Jayce/Viktor.
I contribute occasionally, although my muse's visits are becoming increasingly rare, and fleeting.
So I consider myself something of a "lurker". I'll hit 'like' on a post, but have an odd sense of discomfort interacting with content any further.
I've realised why.
I am deep in a domain primarily occupied by young females. And whilst my sexual/romantic interests couldn't really be any further removed from that demographic, I am uncomfortable and afraid of interacting, lest I be seen as predatory.
(Boo hoo, poor old middle class white guy is uncomfortable, I know.)
The fact that the content is created almost exclusively by women is obviously not the issue I'm having. The feeling that I'm the only man in a space that feels that it was created by women (for women?), is. Is it wrong for me to be here?!
The thing is, every time I've felt that I am the only individual on the planet dealing with a particular problem (gay teen in a Catholic school, dyspraxia, ASD, ADHD, being a single dad, etc) it has turned out - SHOCKINGLY - that I am far from alone in my experiences.
This, so far, does seem to be the trickiest conundrum to navigate, though.
What tags will be fruitful in my endeavour to locate other middle-aged, male, slash shippers?
If you've read this far; thank you. I'm sure you had better things to do.
If you, too, are a guy in his 30s/40s who also has a thing for fictional characters, give me some kind of sign that I'm not alone.

Autistic!Geralt is my current fav headcanon. There's a lot to be said for communication styles, and sensory issues, and all that. Also, i am here for any version, ASD or not, where Jaskier just works out that Geralt is different, that the "normal" social paradigm just isn't in place for Geralt, whether because of neurodivergence from birth, or a long life of trauma and social isolation, Jask learning how he thinks, how he communicates, what makes him genuinely comfortable, And meeting him there
Omg anon i love, love, love your/this headcanon! Because yes, the witcher trials and mutagens had made Geralt more sensitive, more aware of external stimuli, but even as a child, Geralt remembers -
He remembers the input always being on this side of too much. Colors being too bright and sounds being too loud and a perpetual feeling that his skin has been scrubbed raw. And he’s always been a person of few words - can recall not really speaking, at all, until he was five years old. Becoming a Witcher and thrust onto a Continent inherently hostile and distrusting of his kind has only made him more withdrawn; less inclined to speak the words that feel like glass in his throat, that are so difficult for him to muster.
Which is why when Jaskier waltzes into his life - with his turquoise doublet, and doe eyes, and ridiculous “bread in his pants” comment - Geralt doesn’t think the bard will stick around. Jaskier is so loud, so bright, so well-liked - eloquent and well-spoken where Geralt is curt and monosyllabic - that their base differences would eventually put them back on separate paths.
But the bard is full of surprises - continues to subvert and preconceived expecations Geralt has. Expectations that he gained from the sneering and jeering humans who are too stingy with their coin and too liberal with their insults.
Jaskier is unlike any human Geralt’s ever known.
He never pushes the Witcher to talk, content to fill the silence with his own idle chatter. But it’s more than that. He learns to speak Geralt’s language. Learns to decipher Geralt’s looks and Geralt’s touches and Geralt’s taps and Geralt’s entire mannerisms.
Like when Jaskier asks -
“How about we stay in this tavern for the night?”
Geralt will give the slightest of head tilts, which means yes this one is fine.
And Jaskier says, “Great. I dare say I’d fancy myself a pint.”
Geralt will tap on his chin, which means get me one too, please.
And when Jaskier will move towards one of the tables in tavern, and Geralt presses his hand into the crook of the bard’s elbow, Jaskier will incline his head and glance back at the Witcher, nodding and saying, “alright.”
Because he understands that a press to the elbow means, no let’s not sit there, it’s not safe.
And Jaskier - Jaskier, who switched out his preferred fragrance for something less oppressive of Geralt’s delicate sense of smell; Jaskier, who writes songs about Geralt and reforms the undeserved, sullied reputation of Witchers - lets himself be steered because he is unfailingly trusting in Geralt and Geralt’s instincts, and Geralt’s desire to keep him safe.
Geralt doesn’t have the words - will likely never have the words - to express how much Jaskier’s trust, and Jaskier’s willingness to meet him halfway, and Jaskier mean to him. But it’s okay. Because his actions speak louder than any word he could muster, which is just fine with him, because Jaskier understands him perfectly.

Hi there! I am not very educated on the Witcher, but am trying to learn more after my s/o took an interest in the Netflix show and games. He felt that Geralt was autistic, or at least autistic coded. As a fellow biauti, I was wondering what your interpretation on Geralt as autistic is? Do you have any post talking about evidence or connections you saw with Geralt and ASD?
he is totally autistic coded. i havent seen any posts on this, but he is. hes considered a freak, made an outcast, not very social, doesnt show much emotion via his face or voice (at least for the games. ive never watched the netflix series). hes often regared as uncaring, called a mutant, has a hard time making friends (if i remember correctly, most of the friends he made in the books basically invited themselves into geralts life, or someone besides geralt did). he also doesnt touch ppl much, at least in the game

I will die clutching the headcanon that Geralt of Rivia is autistic.
- Not very expressive and perceived as cold & unemotional but actually very caring
- Hates social occasions that have strict rules and expectations for dress, behaviour etc.
- Strong moral compass
- Very knowledgeable about his area of expertise and doesn't care too much about other subjects
- Definitely uses echolalia a lot to keep calm & comfortable in stressful situations ("What now you piece of filth?")
Is there any fictional characters you think are autistic? even if it isn't canon
Hello! To answer your question, there is a character within a book called Anything But Typical and he is Autistic!! [https://g.co/kgs/LTQaBq]  Other than that I have no words on others… Sorry! ~Love Mod Gwen

So I saw a post on here talking about how, when you take the shit Geralt says in the TV series at face value, it’s unbelievably hurtful and cruel towards Jaskier, just, downright mean, and callous, and designed to make Jaskier feel he’s wasted two decades of his life.
But I hate that, because it makes me sad, and on a rewatch, I found an alternate take.
So whether Geralt is neurodivergent in a way we recognize clinically (ASD perhaps? I won’t address that here, but I love Autistic!geralt headcanons), or whether he’s just built himself a particularly abrasive method of interaction over 100 years of shit, prejudice, and abuse, his really rough, rude abrasive words towards Jaskier are not genuine.
And I would expect/choose to believe, that if Jaskier has continued their companionship over two decades, he has not only recognized this about Geralt, but decided he’s more or less okay with it.
So I had the thought particularly during the djinn episode– saw it pointed out somewhere, how un-comforting Geralt is when the elf-healer tells Jaskier the Djinn-curse can kill him. Jaskier turns, desperate, scared, says “fuck, Geralt!” and Geralt sort of awkwardly pats him on the back and says “yeah, we’re not gonna let that happen” in a fairly begrudging way, as if suggesting that the whole situation isn’t that big a deal.
So what if that response has less to do with not caring, with being callous towards Jaskier’s life and fear, and more with either a genuine awkwardness and discomfort with the idea of comforting someone, he really doesn’t know what to say, he’s not used to being a comfort (most ppl are scared enough of him that even when he rescues them, they’d still prefer he left than comfort them in any way), and he’s probably received very little comfort in his life, doesn’t know how to do it, and is barely experienced with the idea of admitting one might want or need it.
And/or, we see the candid, unemotional way he reacts to the ghoul bite in ep7, to the knowledge that he’s seconds from death. So clearly the smooth, stoic, sarcastic, unaffected thing is his usual method of handling scary shit. He doesn’t even raise his voice unless it might help (i.e. out-yelling Yennefer to be heard over the djinn-hurricane, hoping that he can persuade he to give up the really terrible course of action she’s on that’s gonna kill her).
So the other part of it could totally be a case of him downplaying the danger, trying not to think, speak, allude to, mention the danger, possibly as his own coping mechanism (a lot easier to be “fearless” when you repress the shit out of whatever might scare you. if you never let yourself think about the possibility that things might go horribly wrong, then it’s a lot easier to conduct yourself as if nothing bad might happen).
So when he awkwardly pats Jask on the back, distractedly, begrudgingly, patronizingly says, “yeah, we wont let that happen.” It’s genuine awkwardness, and/or a coping mechanism to not let himself think about how bad it is (focus on the solution, not the problem, solve this one, and then the next, etc… he’d do a good job surviving alone on Mars, I think), and/or an attempt to keep Jask calm by not validating his panic, like how if you don’t make a big deal out of a kid’s scraped knee, sometimes then the kid doesn’t panic either and it’s fine.
And likely Jaskier has been his companion long enough to know some of that, maybe even to actually be comforted by Geralt’s lack of panic. Imagine how goddamn frightening it’d be if your super brave/tough/stoic friend actually looked scared.
(the line, when the elf dude starts talking about how in love with Yennefer Geralt must be, when Geralt says “you’re making me uncomfortable?” It’s definitely a funny line, but also it’s possibly genuine. Geralt genuinely expressing himself)
And then later in the episode, Jaskier delivers that line about “wait, is this the moment you decide to finally care about someone other than yourself?” We literally saw him drop everything, ride across the countryside (putting you on Roach, which he never does), seek help from several unknown sources, including this sketchy sorceress chick (and he admits to her and the audience that his concern over saving Jask’s life was such that he A: skipped the opportunity to seek help for his tortuous insomnia issue and B: was more than a bit willing to sell himself into indentured servitude/ something that looked a bit like prostitution)…
Like, fuck off, it’s clear he cares an awful lot about you Jask, and you have to know that. so are YOU being cruel back? or, are you playing along with what Geralt seems to be comfortable with, caring about you so long as neither of you look at that straight-on, or make him talk about it.
-
okay, so than the mountain-top divorce. like, Geralt’s p harsh through a lot of that episode, but there is a tiny bit of playfulness I think still in that dig about worthy travel companions. And if this is a method of talking to each other that they engage in regularly, that Jaskier willingly keeps subjecting himself to…
and then Jask comforts Geralt after the mountain crossing, and when he floats the bit about them traveling together again (maybe implying that these recent adventures are new-ish again, perhaps after a period of separation, perhaps Geralt is extra harsh… perhaps this is a normal-ish thing that Jask has noticed, that Geralt is always more brusque, more accidentally hurtful rather than just dry, right at the beginning or end of their travels together, a defense mechanism of sorts? protecting himself from the pain of separation he’s trying not to acknowledge even exists?) anyway, he floats the line, and I’m p sure Geralt nods.
Jaskier seems to know him pretty damn well.
So none of this makes what Geralt says not shitty, and not hurtful, but rather than let myself wallow in the idea that Jask is completely devastated, feels he’s wasted twenty years of his life on a person who is literally ready to throw him away…
Hopefully not. Hopefully he knows Geralt well enough not to… not to give him a pass, necessarily, Geralt def needs to learn from and atone for that really gross behavior… but enough to know that Geralt’s just very bad, unpracticed, and a bit oblivious when it comes to hurt feelings, to understand that Geralt’s just in a shitty toxic place, that it’s got nothing to do with Jask, that the best thing for all of them is for him to remove himself as a target and let Geralt sort his shit out in his own.
That Jask knows this is one of those times where he can trust his friend with his body, but not his feelings/heart.mind/energy, and he needs to take care of himself first.
So hurt, yeah, but not like devastated, knowing that Geralt didn’t mean his words, but did mean, in that moment, to hurt Jask genuinely and drive him off, not in the light-brusque-teasing way that they sometimes have between them. Knowing both that Geralt was reacting to Yennefer, to other hurts, not to Jask, but also knowing that Geralt was willing to put his own momentary vindictive satisfaction over Jaskier… and so knowing that is was time for them to part for a while, for his own sake. That pushing through at this time was gonna be more masochistic than beneficial or productive, so it was time to look after his own mental health.
Like, this is sort of a pattern I’ve seen in folks in the real world. There’s someone close to me who struggles with some nasty bipolar shit (he’s not found a good med combo for him yet, and even when he’s in a more healthy place, lots of his tools and learned behaviors are mostly crappy still from years of this barely coping while undiagnosed), and sometimes he’s cruel as hell, usually when he hates himself the most, and is lashing out partly in an attempt to get you to say nasty shit back, and justify both his resentment of you, and his belief that he is a worthless shitty person.
And when he’s in those periods, it behooves many of us to just… walk away. like, if you can be/are willing/able to be the person that supports someone through that kind of shit, that’s totes your call to make, and might be a really awesome thing for that person (and that’s where professional help and support can also be awesome! Ppl who have trained to be able to hear the bad shit without taking it personally, and to still be able to guide you to better tools afterwards!)
But sometimes, you also have to take your own health and energy and stuff into account and go “I know this person is being a cruel asshole because they are sick and/or hurting… but also I do not need to swallow the shit just cuz there’s an explanation. so imma peace out until they get their shit together a little more, and are gonna be less toxic/hurtful to me, stop taking it out on people. I can help them, maybe, but their mental health is NOT my sole responsibility, and I do a disservice to both of us if I decide it is, and abdicate personal responsibly for my OWN health in the process.” Put on your own mask first, and all that.
(I’ve seen this in alcoholics I know, as well, and the other side of that is letting them know “hey, I know you feel like you have no control, but one area where you do have some, is how you treat people. and if you’re acting like an asshole, then ppl won’t want to be treated that way. They aren’t leaving because You suck, they are leaving because Your Behavior sucks, and if you want to be around them in future, you should maybe work on your behavior. You are not inherently a Mean Person, but the things you do and say to people are Mean, and they don’t need to sit there and let themselves be abused” Like, it is possible to be ill, and make mistakes!, without being consistently cruel to folk.)
So, magical shenanigans and hissy-fits not a perfect analogy for BD, but it resonated a bit, so I figured I’d share

Note
You should see his look in Night Hunter, that is how I picture adult Liam to be. He just can't be figged to shave himself. His parents [read Scott, Theo and Stiles, are a little bit uncomfortable with how much their wee boy has grown] Also, Geralt is my absolute fav, big ASD vibe.
OMG that’s amazing, he really does give an adult Liam vibe

There was something ugly churning in Geralt's gut watching all those nobles flock around Jaskier. Fawning, complimenting, flirting.
Jaskier should be thriving and preening from all the attention. Instead there was something uncomfortable and pinched in his expression, skillfully masked behind playful smiles and bright laughs.
Geralt didn't want to contemplate why he, and only he, noticed the bard's wish to run.
(works also as a stand alone fic)
