she’s mcg+01-02-015, an unfortunate name for an unfortunate galaxy. she’s all alone, smack in the middle of a void in the pisces constellation with nothing around for 100 MILLION ly in all directions, and the general density of the space around is 1 atom/meter^3.

but she looks surrounded by other galaxies, which is another unfortunate event, a trick of perspective. they’re all background galaxies save for a few of our own stars photobombing the picture.

for reference, if humans had formed there we wouldn’t even have had the technology to discover other galaxies until the 1960s. we would have felt alone in the universe, or maybe i dont know, it would be comforting to think your galaxy is all there is to the universe. what’s all the fuss about all these other galaxies anyway?
