Making Gifs With Autodesk Sketchbook
NON-RECOLORED GIFS
Tool type: Graphic Interface (GUI)
Operating systems: Mac and Windows
Input: Frame by frame screencaps
_______________________________________
While this is most of the way there, I'm stuck on building this into a full tutorial. Just going to post what I have here in case anyone wants to build from it, or Autodesk updates any of the features.
Issues:
You can't crop the frames once they're in the Flipbook, so you either have to keep then at their existing screen ratio, or crop all of your frames somewhere externally (you could use GIMP, ezgif.com, or an FFmpeg shell script for this).
Captioning with a good drop shadow or outline. You can apply a drop shadow, but it isn't going to help much, and there is no outlining support for the text box.
Theoretically, you can do some basic recoloring in Autodesk Sketchbook by going to Image > Adjust and selecting among the options there. However you'd have to do this one by one for every single frame, which is far too tedious in my opinion to be worth the time and effort.
General Instructions to make a gif in Autodesk Sketchbook
You need to get frame by frame screencaps.
There are many ways to make frame by frame screencaps, including within various media players such as VLC. I only have instructions up for automating the process with FFmpeg currently. You can absolutely use FFmpeg* for this. It's where I got my frames for the gif above.
Note that Sketchbook can only export gifs at 12, 24, 25, or 30 FPS, so you want to screencap accordingly (don't use 12 FPS—your result will be horribly choppy).
Note*: Using FFmpeg for this, I had to export .jpeg caps (change .png at the end of the script to .jpeg) because for some reason, FFmpeg's .png outputs wouldn't open in Autodesk Sketchbook (PNGs are always best practice for screencaps because they're lossless).
Open the frames into a Flipbook
In Autodesk Sketchbook, go to File > New Flipbook > New Flipbook from Image Sequence...
In the dialogue box that appears, in the bottom left, click “Show Options”. In the “Import As” dropdown box, select “Midground”. Hold shift and select all of your frames then open. All of your frames should load into a Flipbook in sequence.
Navigating through the frames
There will be a bar at the bottom where you can pause and play your image sequence. It only shows so many frames at one time by default (but you can load and export with up to 1000 frames whether you can see them all at once or not). If you drag the edges of the box and drag the bar at the bottom, you can make the number of frames you can see at one time in the Flipbook toolbar larger. If you still can't see all the frames, you can adjust the beginning and ending frame in your view with the boxes in the left and right upper corners.
Adding captions (no outlines)
If you open the layers tab in the top toolbar, your layers tab will open and you can click into the foreground—a layer in front of your frame—and use the text option to lay captions over your frame.
You have to add your text to every screencap one at a time. However, you can do this pretty quickly using your keyboard's copy/paste shortcut (Command + C -> Command + V on Mac). Select Quick Transform in the top toolbar and select Rectangle. Drag over the entire foreground to select it—not just your caption. Use your keyboard copy shortcut. Leaving the Quick Transform active, click to the next frame in your Flipbook toolbar and use your keyboard paste shortcut. Your caption should paste into the foreground of the next frame and in the exact position you put your text on the previous frame.
Exporting to GIF
Go to File > Export Flipbook...
In the dialogue box...
Select Export as Animated GIF
Select Export All Frames (unless you want to trim the ends, in which case, use the second option to select the range of frames you want to export).
Uncheck Match Document Settings to change the scale of the image (your gif will likely be too large to upload if you don't scale down the size of all the frames on export). You only need to adjust the width or the height. The other variable will automatically match so your image stays scaled. For this gif, I scaled by a 540 pixel width.
The frame rate you should set depends on how many FPS you screencapped at. I screencapped at 30 FPS using FFmpeg so I selected 30 here, but if you screencapped a TV show manually frame by frame, you'd likely want to select 24 FPS.
Make sure "Loop Playback" is checked and hit Export.
Gif made with Autodesk Sketchbook.

Powerpuff Girls 2016 - “The Fog”
Written by: Jake Goldman, Haley Mancini
Written & Storyboarded by: Benjamin P. Carow, Caitlin Vanarsdale
Directed by: Nick Jennings, Bob Boyle
It may be 4/20, but the fog isn't from that.
One of the sad things about the reboot is that newer audiences may associate The Powerpuff Girls with some terrible cartoon that aired in 2016 to 2019. One of the other sad things is that there are moments when the reboot almost gets something actually funny, but is ruined by either a bad performance or just poor timing. This opening joke with Discount Jojo opening his mail is an example of both.
Discount Jojo: Ugh, junk, junk, junk, letter from Aunt Janine? ...junk.
It took me three times to actually see that this was supposed to be a joke, and I can tell because he gets this wide eyed expression once he gets to it. I am sure it was supposed to be Jojo almost looking like he had some sort of soft spot for his aunt that we never heard of, but the line is read just as monotonously as the rest.
It could be likely that Roger L. Jackson is just getting through his lines to get this reboot over with. However, Jojo immediately disproves that as soon as he gets a special letter.
Discount Jojo got a free boat! Yeah, this is just the opening segment of Lisa the Skeptic. They couldn't even be bothered to come up with a different prize than the one Homer was lured in with. All he has to do is go to a hotel called the Doomflower. He walks in, and he falls into a trap door into a conference room, where he meets some other villains who were lured in by this obvious ruse.
He meets the Gnat, who laments that even with his great genius, he was fooled by this too. According to him, he's the greatest foe of the Powerpuff Girls, he should know! Yeah, I guess there's a joke here since Discount is supposed to be their arch enemy, and the Gnat is just...the Gnat. The other villains that will show up are not nearly as fitting as him or, sadly, Discount Jojo, but they're welcome anyway.
The Fashionistas show up, and I'm surprised to say there's a minor bit of continuity here. They actually remembered that Barbarus, the giant pink gorilla, is his ex-girlfriend. It's a plot thread that started in Monkey Love, and, unlike most potential plot threads in this reboot, managed to survive for another episode. Not much else is made of this outside of the one scene, which is a point in this episode's favor, but it was neat to see nonetheless.
Oh yeah, there's also these other guys that we never seen before. Not to say they have bad designs or anything, in fact, I could see potential in that ball of yarn villain, but they barely do anything to even be named in this review. Sorry if you wanted to see anything on the realm of Meet The Beat-Alls, and, if you did, welcome to the reboot. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. In fact, calling this a "big villain team-up" episode would be an overstatement, as they don't really actually do any team moves.
As they're all wondering where the boat is, the mastermind behind this fake boat scam reveals themselves. It's The Sultan of Steam! The Villain of Vapor! The Cloud of Crime!
...The Fog, a cloud with glowing yellow eyes. This fog wants only one thing: the destruction of the Powerpuff Girls, and this villain is offering a bounty of one million dollars. This gets everyone interested, because they all wanted to do that anyway.
The anvil guy, it doesn't matter what his name is, protests, as he has never heard of this fog villain before. Speak for yourself. The fog then takes him down very easily just by enveloping him in the vapor and beating him up. This instantly gets all the villains to respect this new guy as their new leader. Even Jojo, which is kind of out of character for him. Maybe if it was Him or even Silico, maybe.
Suddenly, The Fog gets interrupted. This episode's running gag is Marsha of the Doomflower, showing up to make sure everything is going great. She's always acting all cheerful no matter what she's seeing. While I don't remember laughing at this, I certainly would know if I did, I at least find it kind of charming. It actually tying into the plot at one point helps a lot.
Meanwhile, the Powerpuff Girls are enjoying a nice sunny day with their sprinkler from Painbow. Thankfully, this is the only resemblance this episode has with Painbow outside of being a Buttercup-focused episode. Glad to see that the title card colored accordingly, a sad rarity in Season 3.
While the other two are enjoying playing around with the sprinkler, Buttercup is mad that she's not fighting bad guys and rescuing the people. Apparently, this has been one very slow month in Townsville. Thankfully, her wishes come true, as one-by-one, a villain shows up to try to defeat them once and for all.
The Gnat comes first, using a giant boot. He must have connections to that store that sold the giant terrarium and the giant jar, because that's the only place he could have got it. That's my headcanon. Unfortunately, for the Gnat, Buttercup easily punches him out, making him a rotating JPEG in the sky. Wow, that was easy!
The Fashionistas show up next, showing off their fall fashion line. Before they could do much of anything, they too become a rotating JPEG in the sky before long, this time by Bubbles! She actually gives reason to why they're beating her up aside from their threatening bling knuckles and beauty blasters.
Bianca Bikini: Fur coats!
Bubbles: No! (Makes fox aura) Fur is not fashion!
I mean, I'm not against this characterization for Bubbles. The one person who could talk to animals would be more conscious of such things. At least, I think she can still talk to animals, I wish we could have a reminder!
Discount Jojo shows up, too, with a helicopter hat. Blossom doesn't even need to come in to throw a punch, because Discount Jojo's hat ends up taking him to the sky for her. Why didn't I get a screenshot of this? Because it makes me sad.
I would talk about those other villains if they actually did anything. No really, they just forgot about them outside of the conference room moments. As an aside, it's a wonder how all these villains know where the Powerpuff Girls live; it's not like The Fog gave them directions.
Speaking of which, The Fog is not too happy with how none of them even landed a single punch on them. How did this Fog guy even know that they didn't? Hint #2 that something is up.
Bianca: At least our hair stayed in place. (hi-fives Barbarus)
They haven't done that many of those "gags so funny that they have to add in a fistbump as a makeshift laugh track" in season 3, so it took me a while to realize that is indeed a fistbump gag. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it is not. What I can say is that Bianca's hair isn't even in place, so the joke does not even work.
As this villainous fog turns the crab man, it doesn't matter what his name is, into a Maine crab dinner, The Fog decides to forgo the entire "million dollar" and commands them to defeat the Powerpuff Girls or else. The Fog then gets another interruption from Marsha from the Doomflower Hotel, and we get hint #3 on something being up: she refers to The Fog as Ms. Fog. Well, maybe there's nothing saying The Fog couldn't be female, but as soon as the villains leave, we get our big reveal.
Oh yeah, hint #1 is that The Fog's voice just sounds like Bart Simpson with an even worse cold.
Yeah, The Fog is Buttercup, who was doing this just to get away from all of that boring sprinkler fun! Yes, Buttercup, a girl from a family that needs to shop at discount costume shop, managed to rent a giant conference room with a trap door. I could imagine a hotel called the Doomflower would have cheap rates, but there's no indication whatsoever that their service is poor or that their hotel has an abundance of spiders.
Buttercup knows this ruse will lead to a lot of action, and it sure did and sure will, even if it was far too one-sided. Buttercup says to herself if only Blossom could see her now, even if she knows that she would be in massive trouble if she did.
Blossom: She can.
Whoops! It turns out that Marsha has been giving some house calls to get The Fog to rate their quality service, and Buttercup decided to use the home phone number instead of using her cell phone. See, the running gag ties into the plot! If only more of them did. Buttercup gives her reasoning.
Buttercup: I'm bored! We haven't had a good fight in weeks!
Wow, even Buttercup is aware of how terrible the fight scenes are; it’s been at least 15 years since the last really good one. The two get concerned that these shenanigans will get them into trouble, because even they're aware that these plots just lead them to becoming the damsels in distress for the tomboy of the group to save. Buttercup just brushes them off, as it's not like anything bad is going to happen!
It turns out, the Destructo-Saur knows that there's a million dollars on the heads of those tiny little sugar pumpkins, and he wants it all! He says that The Fog sent him, even though Buttercup has never heard of this villain nor did she invite him with a boat that would be too small for him to enjoy. Something is up already, but there's no time to suspect anything.
Blossom starts the battle by doing what she does best: use her ice breath. Sure, the reboot has made some terrible decisions, but at least it knows Blossom's the only one who could do that! She also says a line that channels the spirit of Mr. Freeze from Batman & Robin. They may as well have done a direct quote; that movie is one of the few things this reboot could compare favorably to!
It doesn't work, of course. After seeing this dinosaur resist Blossom's ice breath, and not even making a single attempt to punch him, Bubbles comes to the obvious conclusion.
Bubbles: This guy's unstoppable!
Yeah, if only Erica The Red was still around! Thankfully for this episode, she’s not here.
After Buttercup fails to defeat him with a crossbow aura and her sisters get hit by a truck full of barbells, she gets stuck in a alleyway. Buttercup begs for mercy, and then another twist happens. It's actually a good twist here; it's one of the few decent moments out of a character that I usually dislike.
However, it does raise a few questions. I will spoil that the Powerpuff Girls end up being okay, even though they got hit by a truck full of barbells. I find it hard to just accept that they could survive getting hit by it, considering how easily they get defeated by things far less capable of defeating ordinary people.
Still in their bandages, the villains show up to finally do a team-up beatdown against the Powerpuff Girls for that sweet cash they were promised, and Buttercup ends the episode with this line:
Buttercup: If you start something...you have to end it!
This does makes me wonder if this episode was actually meant to be a season finale. I mean, we have a partial villain team-up, and the final shot is the Powerpuff Girls flying towards the villains. Well, I don't know what Bubbles is doing there, but I'd imagine the Gnat would get defeated by a stick.
Does the title fit?
Out of all the "name of a character" episodes, this one could at least represent that The Fog was this mysterious entity that nobody knew.
How does it stack up?
I was taken aback by this episode at first, but the less I saw this as a villain team-up and more of a Buttercup lesson episode, the more I grew to appreciate it. It's definitely one of the better Buttercup lesson episodes. It helps that this doesn't exactly turn into a "Buttercup has to save her sisters from a scheme she made", even if that's what it seems to imply at first.
I do wish they could have put in better fight scenes and actually did anything with those throwaway villains, but that's just a general feeling with the reboot. Other than that, a decent second twist, a running gag that fits in with the episode, and some potentially funny moments make this one of the better episodes in general. it's a fog I'm actually not unhappy to be in.
Next, a crucifixion. Seriously.

“Patton, darling.” Roman’s voice was light and airy, free of tension. Patton wondered when it was the last time he’d heard it like that, but quickly got distracted by the feeling of Roman’s finger brushing along his cheekbone. His eyes were still closed, it was the best way to stop the tears. Virgil hadn’t returned from his phone call, but Fid was already dozing in the chair.
“Yes?” Patton’s eyes drifted open, and he let a natural smile through because even though Roman’s face was littered with bruises and cuts and whatnot, Roman’s smile was contagious. Beautiful, even.
“How are you doing?” Roman finger stopped short of Patton’s ear, dropped from his face all together
“I’m tired.” Patton replied, quicker than he would’ve liked.
“I can see.” There was a yawn slipped in there, but Roman tried to hide it best he could. Patton smiled, and when Roman reached down to tug on his hand, Patton tried to ignore it. Roman needed sleep, Roman needed to rest. “Come on Pat.”
Patton sighed, knowing very well that the hospital would only yell at them for it later but right now his best friend looked so hurt, and Patton felt so tired, and he just wanted it all to stop for a moment. For the people he cared about to stop getting hurt. For whirlwinds of life to stop taking away his breath away before he had the chance to breathe after the ones before it.
Roman shifted on his side, and everything told Patton to stay awake. To be on high alert. Virgil would be back anytime soon, he was sure, and with Patton being the only one he knew he would need someone to talk to. Roman groaned when he laid on his side, he needed to stretch out to let his body heal. But then Roman was tugging, and soon enough Patton was on the tiny hospital bed, with the railing next to the chair he had been sat in down. Fid’s side still had it’s railing up, but since there was no hiss from Roman when he pressed his back against it, it must have been supporting the younger man somehow. Roman wrapped his arms around him, pulling Patton toward him. They were spooning.
Patton started laughing at the idea of bruised and bloodied Roman big spooning him, but it dissolved into kind of a quiet sob. Roman played with his fingers, hoping to calm him, and soon enough between that and the subtle humming of a show tune in his ear, Patton was able to fall asleep.
Roman wasn’t sure how long he sat there in the uncomfortably cool lit hospital room with the daytime sunshine poking through the window, that is until one of the prettiest boys he’s ever seen walked into his hospital room. He vaguely remember him being Logan’s twin brother, as he now was coming off his medication high, but to be honest the man looked very little like the Logan he’d met.
He was tall and skinny, like Logan, but his brother had curves, kind of, around the arms of his purple tshirt that showed as he slid the hoodie off his shoulders and onto the back of the chair that had been Pat’s. He kicked his feet up. Not on the railing like Fid’s, but on the bottom or second to bottom railing underneath the bed, letting his knees poke up a bit, a little bit of skin showing from the ripped jeans he was wearing.
What was his name? Whatever it was must have sounded lovely, because as Roman scanned up towards his face, he was sure that yes, this man was lovely. He had dark circles under his eyes, so the two shared a certain disregard for sleep, and he had the most exquisite purple streaks towards the front of his black hair. What a vision.
“Like what you see, Charming?” His voice was deep, gravely almost, but not in a way that was offsetting or uncomfortable. In fact it was quite relaxing.
“Yeah.” Roman answered the man’s smirk with one of his own, but his voice was whisper, as not to wake Patton. “So much so, I’ve forgotten your name.”
“Virgil.” Virgil, it seems, blushed. It was a well worth it sight for embarrassing himself, Roman decided.
“A very nice name.” Roman replied.
“No it’s not.” The other man snickered, pulling out his phone to scroll through, what Roman could see of it was, one of Virgil’s social medias.
“A nice name for a nice looking man.” Roman countered, gripping Patton a little tighter as his best friend made a noise in his sleep.
“Oh my god-” Yawn. “Will you two get a room?”
“Fid, you’re in my hospital room.” Roman barely finished his sentence before his voice was fading, his eyes fluttering closed in a way that Virgil definitely didn’t notice. Or at least would never say that he noticed. Or cared for. Totally didn’t like seeing this Roman guy sleepy. That was just weird right?
“Man, do you guys ever get any sleep?” Virgil chucked, reaching behind him to flick one of the table lamps off.
“We’re prostitutes, what can we say.” Fid shrugged, turning in the tiny hospital chair in a way that showed how uncomfortable they truly were. Roman hummed in agreement, looking down at Patton, acknowledging him in a way.
“How does one even get into that kind of job?” Virgil pretend he was still invested in whatever Instagram post was most prevalent on his phone, and not the way Roman’s breath hitched. He also noticed Fid shifting again, hiding her face from where the other men could still see her.
“You looking to get into it?” Fid growled, pulling her arms close to her to make herself warmer.
“No way.” Virgil clicked his phone off. “Just curious.”
Roman opened his mouth to answer, closed it, and then opened it again. This time his voice felt emptier in the room, like it didn’t fill it enough.. “By having the kind of desperation where you would do anything to survive to your next meal.”
At that moment, Fid’s stomach growled and she gave a small laugh, whipping out her pointer finger to point across Roman at Patton.
“By having a son to take care of that you love more than anything.” Her finger moved to point at Roman. “By having a shitty boyfriend that doesn’t deserve you.”
And her voice stuttered as she tried to point to herself, but Roman threw up a pointed thumb back in her direction. “And having no parents. No siblings. And nobody but a flamboyant sex worker looking out for you even though you’re incredibly bright.”
“Yeah right.” Fid snickered, and so did Roman so Virgil figured he could too. As they were laughing the two kind of shrugged in like a ‘what can ya do’ move.
Sometime later the two had fallen asleep. Virgil had got up to drape his hoodie over Fid’s much smaller body that got very much engulfed in the garment, when a nurse had come in. She groaned, reaching over to turn on the light that Virgil had turned off, and was reaching to touch Patton when Virgil cleared his throat.
“You better not even think about moving any of them.” He warned, and she stopped for a moment to glare at him, but moved away from that side of the bed anyway.
The nurse pushed over toward the side of the bed that he and Fid were on, Fid still supposedly sleeping in the chair, and leaned over Virgil to check Roman’s vitals. Her ass pushed against Virgil’s front, and he ignored the wiggle she did when she pushed against him again to leave the tiny area. She had a sway in her hips as she left.
“That was disgusting.” Fid mumbled, clearly in between the states of conscious and unconscious.
“I’m too gay for this shit.” Virgil groaned, plopping himself down in the chair just as he received a jpeg from Logan of Thomas and Jon curled up asleep on Patton’s couch with the caption being merriam webster’s definition of ‘precious’.
“I’m just gay enough for this shit.” Fid mumbled, laughing to herself very fatiguely as she fell asleep again, curling up in Virgil’s hoodie even more.

So, because I am a writer, something that I never imagined would happen, happened.
No, I did not suddenly learn how to fly.
This is Super Girl. She can fly, and rock a cape.
No, Grover did not propose.
Grover: Some day I will, Cawwie.
Wow. I hope so, Grover, I’ve been waiting on that since first grade.
It wasn’t learning to fly or a Grover proposal.
Instead, I was in a real photo shoot with a real make-up artist and real stylist and real photo shoot coordinator and real photographer with assistant.
For Glamour Magazine.
Yes, seriously. Glamour Magazine.
And I wore make-up. And it was cold, but I still managed to not fall down or turn into an ice cube.
If you know me, you know that I am not a person who wears make-up.
Look. Proof. The photo of myself that I tend to post is make-up free AND my hair is wet. That is how un-glam I am.
So… why? Why was I doing this? Why was I totally stepping outside of my comfort zone?
It was for the Dear Bully anthology that Megan Kelley Hall and I were doing with Harper Collins, so I couldn’t cop out or claim social anxiety disorder because it was for a good cause.
I am a sucker for good.
Anyway, I was totally out of my previously-mentioned comfort zone and the whole time that I was panicking and thinking, “Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. I have to wear make-up. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. People are going to see my picture. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. I have to wear clothes that do not belong to me.”
Really, it’s true. You wear clothes that are not yours at these things. So, I was kind of thinking I’d get to wear something glammy because it is GLAMOUR MAGAZINE, and it was basically my one shot to be actually glamorous.
Yeah.
That didn’t happen.
Since they did the shoot in Maine, they wanted it to reflect Maine culture and I guess holding dead lobsters in our hands and swigging Allen’s Coffee Brandy while wearing moose hats was out of the question.
So the next best thing they could think of was…
Yeah, it was basically …. um….
LL Bean.
Someday, I swear, I’ll be glammy. Really. I will. It’s on my bucket list.
Grover: I am on a cow. That was on the bucket list of me, Grover, and I managed to do it fabulously and glamorously, don’t I?
Yes, I know Grover. You did.
But the point here is that if you are brave and you say ‘yes’ to things that are TOTALLY OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE? Well, good things could happen. You can wear make-up and random clothes from L.L. Bean. Or you can be on the radio at WERU like I was this week. I got to talk to the amazing Brook Mining, who is a rock star librarian and radio host. The hour-long show is archived here if you feel like listening to it.
AND IF YOU EVER have to do a photo shoot with Glamour, do NOT be scared because the people are so awesome and nice and kind and patient. It’s amazing. I fell in love with all of them. They were just that cool.
To find out more about DEAR BULLY check it out here.
And since it’s Mother’s Day in the U.S. this weekend and I am without a mother, here’s a quick shout-out to my mom who tried so hard in a world that was always pushing her down. She was amazing. I miss her.
Writing News
Yep, it’s the part of the blog where I talk about my books and projects because I am a writer for a living, which means I need people to review and buy my books or at least spread the word about them.
So, please buy one of my books. 🙂 The links about them are all up there in the header on top of the page. There are young adult series, middle grade fantasy series, stand-alones for young adults and even picture book biographies.

‘I didn’t do nothing wrong:’ Video shows Naked Cowboy’s guitar being broken during Bike Week arrest DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Two hours of newly released body camera footage shows the chaos and commotion that surrounded the Naked Cowboy’s arrest in Daytona Beach during Bike Week. Robert Burck, 50, who’s better known for wearing nothing but underwear, cowboy boots and a hat as he plays his guitar at Times Square in New York City, was taken into custody Saturday on a panhandling charge during the popular motorcycle event. [TRENDING: ‘Naked Cowboy’ arrested at Bike Week | ‘I think we’re in the Black section’ of the restaurant | Holy Hail: Crazy weather hits Daytona Beach] Ad The footage from the Daytona Beach Police Department starts with an officer motioning for Burck to get away from a crowd that had formed on the sidewalk on Main Street near Fern Lane. “As we walked by earlier we said, ‘Stop panhandling,’ we told you to stop panhandling,” an officer said. “But you said that you don’t panhandle,” another chimed in. “Well, people give me tips,” Burck replied. He later said that he didn’t need money because he’s “already successful” and would stop accepting the cash if that was against the law. He added that he’s been performing at Bike Week for 20 years and he wasn’t aware that the rules had changed. Warning: Video contains graphic content. Viewer discretion is advised. His wife, who was dressed in similar American flag attire, tried to approach and that’s when Burck was placed in handcuffs. Initially, officers told him he was detained and would receive a notice to appear in court. Ad Burck spent a few minutes trying to plead his case but after some time, the officers told him he was now under arrest and not free to go. He continued to insist that what he was doing wasn’t about the money. “I have an 800 credit score. I don’t (expletive) around. What’s wrong with you? I didn’t do nothing wrong,” Burck said. Excuse me?” the officer asked. “I don’t care. You heard me, yeah, you heard me. I don’t want money from them. I’m already rich. I don’t give a (expletive) about the money. You can break the guitar and give it to all the (inaudible),” Burck replied. Crowds soon started to gather to film the encounter at times chanting, “boo,” “free the Naked Cowboy,” and “let him go.” Things escalated when Burck told his wife to grab his cellphone out of his boot after an officer had already told him that she needed to stay on the sidewalk. Ad Moments after a handcuffed Burck walked toward his wife, yelling at her to “take my (expletive) phone out of my (expletive) boot,” a female officer told him, “you need to be quiet” and pushed him against the patrol car, rotating him several times across the vehicle while his guitar was still strapped across his chest. Burck told the officer he wasn’t resisting. “I don’t want to fight you. Come on, my (expletive), you (expletive) broke my guitar strings. Oh my God, you broke my (expletive) guitar now,” Burck said. Naked in Daytona! Bikeweek.com BikeweekNews.blog Daytona Bike Week Bernie and Sid in the Morning MainStreet #mainstreet #lifeisgood #DaytonaBikeWeek2021 Posted by The Naked Cowboy on Saturday, March 6, 2021 The video shows that Burck began hurling insults at the female officer once he realized his instrument was snapped at the neck. “(Expletive) you, (expletive) (homophobic slur), (expletive) (homophobic slur),” he told her. That same officer counted the cash that was stuffed inside the guitar’s sound hole, totaling $231. About 10 minutes after the instrument was damaged, Burck offered an apology to the female officer for calling her names. Ad “I was mad, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. You can call me a (homophobic slur),” he said. “I don’t talk to people like that,” the officer replied. “I was scared, I was scared. You know when you get scared you say stupid things,” Burck said. One hourlong body camera video ends with Burck in the back of a patrol car while the other ends with Burck joking about breaking off his handcuffs. “This is funny, the whole thing is funny,” he said. Burck was arrested on charges of panhandling and resisting arrest without violence. In court, the panhandling charge was tossed out and Burck entered a plea of no contest on the resisting arrest charge. He was sentenced to time served and ordered to pay court costs. He has since been released from the Volusia County Jail. Use the form below to sign up for the ClickOrlando.com Strange Florida newsletter, sent every Friday. Brian Minter: Kruckeberg and Chalker-Scott's book remains one of the best sources on native plants
For many good reasons, there is a renewed interest in native plants. As we deal with changing weather patterns and the resulting stressors, particularly drought, our native plants seem more tolerant of these conditions.
Last week I wrote about the importance of pollinator gardens, and native plants provide the diversity needed for all wildlife, especially pollinators. With the current awakening to the vital need to care for our planet, restoring native plantings is an essential environmental practice.
There is, however, some confusion about using native plants. An excellent new book, Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest, is perhaps one of the best recent publications on this subject. What’s unique about this book is the depth of knowledge and the practical approach it recommends when dealing with gardens of all types. Being the third edition of this book, it has been updated with beautiful images and information more relevant to today’s gardens.
It was originally authored by Dr. Arthur Kruckeberg, a much-respected professor who specialized in botany at Washington State University. Along with his wife Mareen, he conducted numerous field trips throughout the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest, discovering and collecting seeds of many native plants. In 1958, they purchased four acres north of Seattle and turned them into MsK Rare and Native Plant Nursery, a well-known native plant nursery, where they propagated unique native plants.
They also created a stunning garden featuring native plants. The nursery/garden was open to the public one day a year. Today, the garden is owned by the City of Shoreline and run by the non-profit, member-based Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation. It is open to the public year-round. Visit kruckeberg.org for specific times.
Linda Chalker-Scott is the co-author of Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest.
Dr. Kruckeberg wrote five books on various aspects of native plants. However, he is, perhaps, best known for being at the forefront of encouraging folks to use natives in their gardens. His book, Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest, published in 1982, was one of the first of its type in the United States. Now, a revised third edition, co-authored by Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott, provides a greater appreciation of the natural world surrounding us, and how to incorporate that uniqueness into our own gardens.
Chalker-Scott, a science professor at Washington State University, specializes in botany and horticulture. She, too, is passionate about native plants and their impact on the world, especially in gardens of any dimension.
I once asked her how this book will help those folks wanting to learn more about native plants. “In many ways,” she answered. “But the photography, in particular, will provide images never seen before of natives in their natural habitat, as well as great pictures of how Mother Nature landscapes.”
This book is science based which gives it a broad-based credibility. It is highly relevant for today’s urban gardens as it shows plants in their natural habitat and it covers all zones of the Pacific Northwest in their many differing conditions.
Where do you think landscape architects and trained landscapers are in terms of incorporating natives in their garden designs? Chalker-Scott assured me that she has seen a positive change.
“We’re not there yet, but we’re moving in the right direction. It depends, of course, on their clients’ wishes, but they also are influencing change. Native plants do add great aesthetic appeal.”
Chalker-Scott observed that native species themselves play a key role in providing much needed direction for our own plantings.
“Before any gardens existed, native plants provided all the needs of wildlife. For example, when the native mock orange blooms, it’s simply smothered in cutter bees.
“Here’s an important point to understand. Many of today’s non-native cultivars are also great plants for pollinators. So my perennials, trees and shrubs have within them the genes of their original natives, and they, too, produce flowers, seeds and berries important to wildlife.”
I asked Chalker-Scott if natives can play a role in today’s food gardens. She assured me that many food plants make ideal crossover landscape plants. For example, she noted that the whole vaccinium family, including native huckleberries, lingonberries, cranberries and blueberries, are wonderful food sources for wildlife. I mentioned the current fascination with salal — a native plant that is so ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest. Chalker-Scott chuckled, “They don’t taste particularly great, but as a rule of thumb, most darker coloured berries, such as salal, are very high in nutrients and antioxidant levels.”
She was adamant, however, about the need to be cautious when going into the forest and to not eat any berries unless you know for sure they are safe.
“You may see birds eating them, but that doesn’t really mean they are safe for us.”
I wanted to know if she thought natives lend themselves to small space gardens.
“I have one myself, and it’s designed with native plants. What they bring to the table is ‘charismatic fauna’. Milkweed was unheard of a few years ago, but its connection to the monarch butterfly changed that dramatically. There’s a significant demand for it now, not only to attract monarchs to our gardens but also for the preservation of this declining butterfly species.”
“The other issue,” she explained, “is replacing very small patches of lawn with native ground covers. I love Oregon oxalis (Oxalis oregana) in shady areas because of its simple elegance. In terms of landscape design, one of the missing elements is the vertical uplift. Tall, narrow plants, like the native ‘nootkatensis’ or vine maples, are useful even in smaller spaces.”

In many of today’s gardens, plant combinations are very much the ‘in thing.’ Do natives provide good combination options? Chalker-Scott’s response was, “Look at some of the images in this book, and you’ll see that when it comes to companion planting, Mother Nature is the master designer.”
I mentioned the challenge of urban trees not having long lifespans. She said this was a serious concern. Part of the problem is planting with not enough good soil, and adequate watering has become an issue during our seemingly extended hot summers. So, special care, such as quality, well-draining soil and a proper location, is needed, especially when planting natives. If you have access to water all summer, then spring and summer are fine times to plant. If water could be a problem, plant in the fall when winter rains will help them settle in.
“Mulching is very important for most native plants,” said Chalker-Scott. “Natural mulch, such as needles and branches, is best, but similar mulches certainly help because they will hold in precious moisture over the summer as well as providing a habitat for beneficial insects and microbes.”
Although there is more availability today, it may be necessary to do some searching to find a nursery that carries a wide diversity of native plants. Some garden stores are extending their selection of these versatile plants.
Chalker-Scott will be giving a free lecture about native plants in the Floral Hall at VanDusen Gardens on Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Her book will be available then and will be in most local book stores as of April 2. Be sure to take this opportunity to learn more about our valuable natives and how best to incorporate them into your own garden … and perhaps get a signed copy of her book.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Generate Alt Text on Images
Web developers and content editors alike often forget or ignore one of the most important parts of making a website accessible and SEO performant: image alt text. You know, that seemingly small image attribute that describes an image:
<img src="/cute/sloth/image.jpg" alt="A brown baby sloth staring straight into the camera with a tongue sticking out." >
📷 Credit: Huffington Post
If you regularly publish content on the web, then you know it can be tedious trying to come up with descriptive text. Sure, 5-10 images is doable. But what if we are talking about hundreds or thousands of images? Do you have the resources for that?
Let’s look at some possibilities for automatically generating alt text for images with the use of computer vision and image recognition services from the likes Google, IBM, and Microsoft. They have the resources!
Reminder: What is alt text good for?
Often overlooked during web development and content entry, the alt attribute is a small bit of HTML code that describes an image that appears on a page. It’s so inconspicuous that it may not appear to have any impact on the average user, but it has very important uses indeed:
Web Accessibility for Screen Readers: Imagine a page with lots of images and not a single one contains alt text. A user surfing in using a screen reader would only hear the word “image” blurted out and that’s not very helpful. Great, there’s an image, but what is it? Including alt enables screen readers to help the visually impaired “see” what’s there and have a better understanding of the content of the page. They say a picture is worth a thousand words — that’s a thousand words of context a user could be missing.
Display text if an image does not load: The World Wide Web seems infallible and, like New York City, that it never sleeps, but flaky and faulty connections are a real thing and, if that happens, well, images tend not to load properly and “break.” Alt text is a safeguard in that it displays on the page in place of where the “broken” image is, providing users with content as a fallback.
SEO performance: Alt text on images contributes to SEO performance as well. Though it doesn’t exactly help a site or page skyrocket to the top of the search results, it is one factor to keep in mind for SEO performance.
Knowing how important these things are, hopefully you’ll be able to include proper alt text during development and content entry. But are your archives in good shape? Trying to come up with a detailed description for a large backlog of images can be a daunting task, especially if you’re working on tight deadlines or have to squeeze it in between other projects.
What if there was a way to apply alt text as an image is uploaded? And! What if there was a way to check the page for missing alt tags and automagically fill them in for us?
There are available solutions!
Computer vision (or image recognition) has actually been offered for quite some time now. Companies like Google, IBM and Microsoft have their own APIs publicly available so that developers can tap into those capabilities and use them to identify images as well as the content in them.
There are developers who have already utilized these services and created their own plugins to generate alt text. Take Sarah Drasner’s generator, for example, which demonstrates how Azure’s Computer Vision API can be used to create alt text for any image via upload or URL. Pretty awesome!
See the Pen Dynamically Generated Alt Text with Azure's Computer Vision API by Sarah Drasner (@sdras) on CodePen.
There’s also Automatic Alternative Text by Jacob Peattie, which is a WordPress plugin that uses the same Computer Vision API. It’s basically an addition to the workflow that allows the user to upload an image and generated alt text automatically.
Tools like these generally help speed-up the process of content management, editing and maintenance. Even the effort of thinking of a descriptive text has been minimized and passed to the machine!
Getting Your Hands Dirty With AI
I have managed to have played around with a few AI services and am confident in saying that Microsoft Azure’s Computer Vision produces the best results. The services offered by Google and IBM certainly have their perks and can still identify images and proper results, but Microsoft’s is so good and so accurate that it’s not worth settling for something else, at least in my opinion.
Creating your own image recognition plugin is pretty straightforward. First, head down to Microsoft Azure Computer Vision. You’ll need to login or create an account in order to grab an API key for the plugin.
Once you’re on the dashboard, search and select Computer Vision and fill in the necessary details.
Starting out
Wait for the platform to finish spinning up an instance of your computer vision. The API keys for development will be available once it’s done.
Keys: Also known as the Subscription Key in the official documentation
Let the interesting and tricky parts begin! I will be using vanilla JavaScript for the sake of demonstration. For other languages, you can check out the documentation. Below is a straight-up copy and paste of the code and you can use to replace the placeholders.
var request = new XMLHttpRequest(); request.open('POST', 'https://[LOCATION]/vision/v1.0/describe?maxCandidates=1&language=en', true); request.setRequestHeader('Content-Type', 'application/json'); request.setRequestHeader('Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Key', '[SUBSCRIPTION_KEY]'); request.send(JSON.stringify({ "url": "[IMAGE_URL]" })); request.onload = function () { var resp = request.responseText; if (request.status >= 200 && request.status < 400) { // Success! console.log('Success!'); } else { // We reached our target server, but it returned an error console.error('Error!'); } console.log(JSON.parse(resp)); }; request.onerror = function (e) { console.log(e); };
Alright, let’s run through some key terminology of the AI service.
Location: This is the subscription location of the service that was selected prior to getting the subscription keys. If you can’t remember the location for some reason, you can go to the Overview screen and find it under Endpoint.
Overview > Endpoint : To get the location value
Subscription Key: This is the key that unlocks the service for our plugin use and can be obtained under Keys. There’s two of them, but it doesn’t really matter which one is used.
Image URL: This is the path for the image that’s getting the alt text. Take note that the images that are sent to the API must meet specific requirements:
File type must be JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP
File size must be less than 4MB
Dimensions should be greater than 50px by 50px
Easy peasy
Thanks to big companies opening their services and API to developers, it’s now relatively easy for anyone to utilize computer vision. As a simple demonstration, I uploaded the image below to Microsoft Azure’s Computer Vision API.
Possible alt text: a hand holding a cellphone
The service returned the following details:
{ "description": { "tags": [ "person", "holding", "cellphone", "phone", "hand", "screen", "looking", "camera", "small", "held", "someone", "man", "using", "orange", "display", "blue" ], "captions": [ { "text": "a hand holding a cellphone", "confidence": 0.9583763512737793 } ] }, "requestId": "31084ce4-94fe-4776-bb31-448d9b83c730", "metadata": { "width": 920, "height": 613, "format": "Jpeg" } }
From there, you could pick out the alt text that could be potentially used for an image. How you build upon this capability is your business:
You could create a CMS plugin and add it to the content workflow, where the alt text is generated when an image is uploaded and saved in the CMS.
You could write a JavaScript plugin that adds alt text on-the-fly, after an image has been loaded with notably missing alt text.
You could author a browser extension that adds alt text to images on any website when it finds images with it missing.
You could write code that scours your existing database or repo of content for any missing alt text and updates them or opens pull requests for suggested changes.
Take note that these services are not 100% accurate. They do sometimes return a low confidence rating and a description that is not at all aligned with the subject matter. But, these platforms are constantly learning and improving. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Hi guys! After some weeks of Christmas get-togethers, quick trips, and what seemed like endless documents to study for finals, I ultimately had time to write down my top 10 makeup products of 2018 and I wanted to share them with you. Some of these were released prior to this year, but I added them anyway because I either didn’t find them sooner, or they’ve just been a huge staple for me this year as well. In a week, hopefully, I’ll have my top cruelty-free cosmetics list up!
10. Very Vegan Matte Bronzer in ‘Sun-kissed’
3,95€ – 3,95€ (UK) | Cruelty-free | Vegan
This bronzer is pretty much the only one I’ve used this year, and that’s because I didn’t feel like I needed any other. Word has it, this is a dupe for Benefit‘s Hoola Bronzer (which is not cruelty-free), and even though I haven’t tried those, I get why people love them so much thanks to W7! It blends effortlessly, doesn’t look too unnatural and the shade I got is a really good fit for my skin tone. The price is truly great too!
9. Paleta Paint Pretty – Tarte
10€ | Cruelty-free | Vegan
I got this palette at the beginning of last year (2018) and I’ve constantly used the blush in it ever since. I’ve always heard good things about Tarte‘s blushes, and this one proved why. I loved the neutral and light tone it has, and the other two shades have come in handy when I was traveling and didn’t have contouring or mattifying powders. Nevertheless, those two are not my favorite: the brown shade is shimmery and the white one is way too dark for my skin.
Paint Pretty Palette from Tarte, You Had Me At Hello Palette from Colourpop, and Anastasia Beverly Hills‘ single shadows
8. No Filter Concealer
$6.00 | 30 shades / tonos | Cruelty-free | Vegan
This concealer is a huge staple in my collection. I love dramatic eyebrows, and for that, I need to define them with concealer. This one does that job perfectly. It’s really creamy and dries up very quickly, but it’s easy to blend. However, it does oxidize a bit, so I don’t normally use it on the undereye area — it doesn’t even feel comfortable anyway.
What also makes this product of my tops this year is that I love using the white shade as a base for shadows. It has also been incredibly useful for the artsy and Halloween looks I’ve created!
No Filter range – Setting Powder, Concealer, Foundation and Sheer Pressed Powder (Colourpop Cosmetics)
7. Princess Potion Primer – W7
£8.95 – | Cruelty-free | Probably Vegan*
This product is surprisingly good! It’s very affordable, smells amazing, and leaves my skin soft and ready to blend products on top. I haven’t had any problems with it, and I especially recommend it to people with dry skin or people who have a tough time trying to blend foundation or cream products on their face. It helps a lot! I’ve personally used it on people with dry skin and it worked wonders.
REVIEW: Does it work? Princess Potion Primer – W7 (Review)
6. HD Liquid Coverage Foundation – Catrice
7,99€ | Cruelty-free | Vegan
This vegan and cruelty-free foundation is not only affordable but really nice as well. It lasts and lasts and lasts. It’s one of my favorite picks for night outs, as it doesn’t fade away with sweat and holds up pretty flawlessly. The only thing I don’t like about it is the shade range. I wish it was more diverse. It would make it one of the best foundations ever!
PLUS: their Liquid Camouflage High Coverage Concealer is one of my favorites as well. I didn’t add it to this list because I’ve been using it for years now.
5. ‘Ice Cold’ Highlighter
$29 – 28,50€ – £25,50| Vegan | Cruelty-free
I’m a huge fan of blinding highlighters, and Jeffree Star Cosmetics certainly gave me that with their ‘Ice Cold’ highlighter. The product comes in a very sturdy packaging, but I like that because the reason is that it has more quantity in it. Besides how blinding it is, it’s also very easy to use and the tone is perfect for pale skin. Little goes a long way, and the formula is one of my new favorites. I haven’t tried their new range of highlights yet, but I sure will someday!

4. Born This Way Multi-Use Sculpting Concealer – Too Faced
$29.00 – 29,55€ | Cruelty-free | Vegan
Too Faced recently came out with new concealers for their Born This Way range, and I knew I had to try them. People were very impressed by them, and so was I. The coverage is really high, it blends like a dream, and it doesn’t crease nearly as much as the rest of my concealer collection (besides Becca‘s Aqua Luminous, which is really great for dry skin). It’s not as hydrating, but I am more pleased with this one overall.
3. After Shock Palette
10$ (Shop Hush App) | Cruelty-free
Probably the best colorful palette of the year for me. I love using this palette because due to how loose the shadows are, it’s very pigmented. It adheres to wet concealers or eye primers perfectly, and they blend with other shades very nicely. So fun to use and play. If you want to know more, you can check my in-depth review here. And yes, you can buy it from the app even if you’re don’t live in the US.
2. Conceal & Define Foundation
23ml | 10€ – £9 – $13 | Vegan | Cruelty-free | Oil-free
Makeup Revolution slayed the cruelty-free affordable concealer game at the beginning of the year, and by the end, they released one of the best foundations I’ve ever tried, if not the best. Full coverage, lightweight, pretty natural-looking for a matte finish — this foundation has it all, including the very reasonable price!
And, finally… what was the best cruelty-free makeup product of the year for me?
1. Norvina Palette
$42 – £43 – 50,55€ | Cruelty-free | Vegan
This palette was such a remarkable product for me. I hadn’t tried Anastasia palettes before (although I did try some of their individual shadows and I loved them), and I was quickly amazed by how good the shadows in Norvina were. I genuinely want to get another one someday so I can hang it somewhere in my future beauty room and admire it. The colors really spoke to me and the quality was there, which is why I consider this palette my favorite of the year — and the product I’ve been the most obsessed with.
The only thing I disliked about this palette was that it isn’t vegan.
The Norvina Palette
This is it for today, guys! What products were your favorites this year? Hopefully, now that I’ve finished my finals, I’m going to be able to post more regularly. I don’t like being inconsistent, but it’s what I had to do and I’m just glad and excited to get back on track. I’ve truly missed writing here!
Thank you so much for reading me, and see you in the next post! Before you go, don’t forget to follow me on social media ♡

Heyyy. how do you do that image of 'The Dervoe Legacy'??? I'm thinking of starting my own legacy too. Any tipssss maybe?
How cool! I’ll definitely want to have a look at that legacy!
If you mean the ‘’banner’’ above, I used GIMP for editing. It’s a jpeg file that I simply add in to my picture edits. I like to post everything in one picture just so tumblr wouldn’t mess up the picture quality! The picture size is 1280x 200 which is a good width to have on tumblr. I simply make a plain background, add the font and paste the pictures on top of the whole thing, resizing them according to the size of the banner of course. I might do a proper tutorial with pictures on how I make it later on, in case there’s more interest :)
For tips on editing the font and much more, check out these tutorials!
Other tips for starting a legacy in general are: (in my opinion)
⦁Do not take any stress about it
⦁ Play your legacy whenever you feel like it and in your own pace
⦁ Follow your own rules or pre-written ones, for example the ones here, here or here (there are so many more, some more known and others unknown. This list includes a ton of them)
⦁ Try to keep the gameplay exciting for yourself! For me, something that happens way too often would be me starting a new legacy, then getting bored before I reach generation two and just quitting the whole thing. So try to keep it fun for yourself and avoid feeling pressured to play.
⦁ If you want to document it on tumblr for example, edit pictures as you go! Editing pictures alongside playing seems to work best for me! I want to find a balance between editing pictures and actually playing, that way I feel like my captions are much more genuine (because whenever I post a picture I am unaware of what will happen next). Of course, if you want to make it more ‘’storylike’’ it might be better to ‘’be in control’’ of where the legacy is going. Another thing that I have done in the past is having so much fun playing the save, I end up taking heaps of screenshots and when I have to post something I feel extremely unmotivated to edit anything because of the crazy number of pictures I have to go through. Also, I probably won’t remember why I took a certain screenshot so captioning them makes it difficult.
⦁ Follow other legacies and simblrs! It’s awesome to be inspired by someone else and that can really motivate you to continue to evolve your own legacy!
⦁ Decide on your writing style! Do you want to keep it funny? Dramatic? Or maybe focus on storytelling? It can be good to decide on what way you want to go with the legacy in advance.
⦁ Put time on your editing! Everyone has their own editing style and that’s great! It wouldn’t be much fun if every simblr had pictures that looked all the same. It’s good to think about how you want your editing to be presented, and remember, it is entirely up to you. Good looking pictures do attract more notes so working on the editing can be good! When I edit I use a combination of GIMP (which you can get for free by clicking the link) and Lightroom, you can try it for free here. And I use photoshop CS5 occasionally. Getting photoshop does not automatically make your pictures pretty, so if you do decide to go for an editing software such as photoshop, be sure to check out tutorials online and do lots of practicing! Another free editing site that I do recommend is Picmonkey
⦁ And last but not least, have fun with it!!
I could say so much more so maybe I’ll make a proper tutorial/post about this later on, hopefully this helped though ❤ And good luck with starting your own legacy!

We’ve known Robyn Ottolini for a few years now, watching her put in work as a songwriter, singer, and performer. We saw her in 2016 as a semi-finalist in the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, watched her onstage in Cobourg at the Country Wild festival, and have listened as she released her EPs (Classic, 2019 & I’m Not Always Hilarious, 2020). And now we’re catching up with her as she prepares to kick-off her Backyard Songwriters Stories tour.
We all know that the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into every single live music plan for this summer, so to see Robyn and her performing partners (Alexa Goldie, Travis Eugene, Matt Gunn, and Sarah Wickett) getting set to play live for fans is wonderful. We asked about that – and more – but first, let’s get to a round of 5 Quick Questions!
Back in October, we caught up with Robyn and she did a written round of 5 Quick Questions, so this time, we got her new questions and she turned on the camera to answer them.

5 Quick Questions with Robyn Ottolini

Now, get to know Robyn a little more, find out about the shows, the F-150 Remix, her (previously) unknown entertainment choices, and more in our new Q&A.
And if you want to know more about her, find her on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram and check ’em out.
Robyn Ottolini Q&A
1) You’ve found a way to play some live shows coming up in Newcastle, Peterborough, Uxbridge, and Beaverton – how did those come together, and do you think you’re going to be planning more to come after those four?
Robyn Ottolini) They came together fast. I went to Andrew Hyatt’s backyard shows and immediately after my manager wanted to do them and of course, I want to do them because you can only do so many internet concerts until you get lonely! They’re all physically distanced and safe. It strips everything back to the basics. We’re in a backyard, telling stories and playing some tunes we wrote. I’m just stoked to respond to people and see reactions. That’s what I feed off of and these shows are gonna be fantastic. [email protected] for info and tickets.
2) We all know it’s a real bummer that we’ve missed festival season this year, and you posted on your social media about missing Boots & Hearts. What is the #1 thing you miss about going to Boots or any festival?
Robyn) My favourite part about music festivals is that your one job, for four days (or however many) is literally to just watch music. That’s it. That’s your one job. Make sure you get to the concerts. That’s all you have to do. Absolute heaven.
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
3) Let’s put some good vibes and hopes and dreams out into the world – what is something in your career that you’ve thought about or started planning that you hope to accomplish in the near or distant future?
Robyn) Might be shooting big (or small?) depends on your perspective I guess… anyway, my dream is to be a career writer/get a publishing deal. Songwriting is the most relaxing thing and my happiest place. You can always get better and never be the best and I love the challenge of that. So boom, that’s the dream. Might be close, might be far but I’m pretty determined to get there.
4) You released the F-150 Remix, what was that process like, and how did it feel to give a new life or different life to one of your songs?
Robyn) I love pop music. I grew up strictly country, love country until the day I die but I love the cross-over. I love pop melodies and the way they’re more risky with what they say in the lyrics. So it was fun to turn one of my sad songs into a little bit of a dancing groove and bring those pop elements that I admire into a country song.
youtube
5) What has been your favourite part about doing your Good Shit News Network shows on Instagram live?
Robyn) Looking up all the good things happen in the world and brightening people’s day. Also the wine. Definitely the wine.
6) Last one for a little something extra, can you tell us all something that we wouldn’t find on your social channels or in a Google search. (example: a hidden talent)
Robyn) This is tricky. I’m a pretty open book when it comes to my songs, writing and social media. I’m pretty sure you already know I love the ocean and shark conservation but did you know… I love reality tv? That is some gooooood shit. I love watching people do weird inappropriate things that we’re all guilty of for the world to see. Cinematic brilliance. *chefs kiss*
Thanks for having me guys ❤
Big thanks to Robyn for taking the time to answer the Q&A questions and for her round of 5 Quick Questions. If you’re in or near Newcastle, Peterborough, Uxbridge, or Beaverton, we suggest you grab a ticket and check out the show!

Time to Visit the Ol’ New Mexico Punching Bag
For those that have read this incredibly witty blog since its inception in 2006 (Thanks Mom), you may have noticed that I always make fun of New Mexico in almost every entry, and this one will not be any different. Watch out New Mexican education, arroyos, and green chili.
Deep in Thought
To Adobe or Not to Adobe
Both Nadine and I, along with Scuba Steve, decided that since the Pepper Family moved to New Mexico, we should give them a visit. Pepper claims this newest Mexico as his home state, but he could easily claim Texas too, since he did live in San Antonio for a couple of years where the rabid dogs roam free. For the rest of us, it would be an easy choice. For him, he just wants to be different . . . and dumb. And like any trendy hipster moving from Denver, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico, the only acceptable trendy place for him and his family to settle was Santa Fe. Thus, that is where we went to find the Peppers.
For every town or city that wants to attract to trendy folks, there is one major material that attracts the masses, adobe. Every home, office building, dog house, green salsa joint, mailbox was plastered with that wonderful mixture of clay, water, and manure. Just like the warm sun baking every square inch of adobe covering Santa Fe, our time in the adobefied Santa Fe was adobely laid back.

New Mexican Nature
As winter drew near, the trees of Hyde Memorial State Park began the yearly process of changing colors, and the drive out was bordered by overabundance of yellow foliage. Our combined three kids ran around, played in the leaves, and chased each other. Fortunately one kid was covered with three layers of sunblock and a big ol’ cowgirl hat to protect them from the sun.
A Natural Painting Canvas – Pepper’s Giant Nose
With Halloween approaching, the garage became our children’s painting studio. In addition to pumpkins, other large items served as a quality painting surface: ground, plastic sheets, and Pepper’s nose.
The Perfect Canvas – Pepper’s Nose
A Burrito Buzz
Santa Fe actually is a really nice place to visit. Not sure you could say the same for the rest of the state, but Santa Fe is definitely above the New Mexico appeal curve. Not really that hard to beat. The town has a beautiful downtown plaza, mountains overlooking everyone, an old church that serves donuts every Sunday morning, and some quality food. Yet there is one thing the entire state could hang its hat on. Santa Fe may be home to the best burrito in the world. The restaurant Bumblebees makes one of the meanest burritos I have ever eaten, and just like any Steven Seagal movie, it leaves you wanting even more.

Visual content, especially images, is an immensely important aspect of your website. They make your content easier to read and more engaging. Images also trigger emotions and entice your visitors to convert faster.
However, just because you are uploading a photo you previously downloaded from a stock photography site and filling in your alt tag doesn’t mean you will accomplish any of the goals mentioned above.
To get the most out of your images, you need to optimize them for search engines.
Now, you are probably asking yourself: “Why should I invest in image SEO when Google’s machine learning algorithms can now recognize images themselves?”
In this guide, I will briefly explain the importance of image SEO and provide a few tips that may serve as your solid starting point.
Let’s dive in.
1. Choose the Right Name for your Images
The filename tells Google what your image is about. For example, white-leather-shoes.jpg provides more information about the image than IMG00154.jpg. No matter how smart Google is, you should help it understand your images faster and more efficiently.
For starters, you should focus on your main keyword. If your image shows red apples, then your main keyword would be “red apples,” as they are the subject of the photo. Sure, this doesn’t mean you should stuff your filenames with a bunch of keywords. Instead, make sure your image names are clear, informative, and descriptive.
2. Write Descriptive Alt Text
Alternative text, or alt text, has the same purpose as your filename – to describe an image both to search engines and users. Parallel with the page content, filenames, and computer vision algorithms, Google uses alt text to understand the subject matter of your visual content. These elements also appear when there is something wrong with the photo and a user cannot see it. This way, they will know what the image is about.
Precisely because of that, your alt tags need to be helpful and straightforward. Avoid packing them with keywords, as this may trigger negative user experiences. Say you want to upload a photo of a white chihuahua playing fetch. Your alt text would be something like <img src=”white-chihuahua.jpg” alt=”White chihuahua playing fetch”/>.
3. Optimize your Captions
This is the text that accompanies your image on your website. It is usually placed below the photo. The reason why captions are important to your image SEO strategy lies in the fact that Google uses them to learn more about the subject matter of the image. They can also improve user experiences, given that many searchers use headings and captions when scanning online content.
Similar to image names and alt tags, you need to avoid over-optimization. Instead, rely on white label SEO practices and use your keywords carefully to make your captions organic and useful.
4. Pick the Right File Type
There is no perfect image file type. Its choice depends on the images you create and your needs. The most popular image file formats are JPEG, PNG, and GIF.
Each of these file types has certain advantages and disadvantages. JPEG offers the smallest file size and yet, ensures a high image quality. It is the best format for large photos and illustrations. PNG is a logical choice for any fine drawings, logos, illustrations, and text, as it helps you maintain background transparency. GIF is used by marketers creating moving images and animations.
5. Resize your Images
Choosing the right image file type may directly impact the performance of your visual content. Page load time is a significant ranking factor both on mobile and desktop devices. Therefore, you need to choose the right file type that will help you reduce the size of an image, without compromising its quality.
There is a wide range of simple image compression tools you could use, such as ImageOptim, Kraken.io, TinyPNG, Imagify.io, Compressor.io, Shortpixel, and so forth.
Once you optimize your images, you can test your page speed using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest.org, Lighthouse, or Pingdom.
6. Use Schema Markup
Using structured data on your pages help Google display your image as rich results. While structured data is not a ranking factor, it can still boost your SEO efforts in multiple ways.
For starters, it provides users with relevant information and encourages them to click on your link to find out more. It also increases your exposure in the SERPs. Above all, using structured data on your website gives relevant users to find your content faster and, in this way, sends more targeted traffic to your site.
Google provides support for 4 types of structured data – products, recipes, videos, and GIFs. They say that using the right structured data on your pages helps users find relevant content faster
7. Make Sure your Images are Responsive
In the past, we talked about creating and optimizing content for desktop and mobile devices. Today, we talk about mobile responsiveness. Instead of creating separate visual content for desktop and mobile versions of your website, you should make sure your images adapt to different screen resolutions. And, this is where srcset shines.
This is a piece of HTML code that tells the browser what version of your image to load, based on users’ screen resolution. Sure, this does not mean you should upload different sizes for each image. From its 4.4 version, WordPress will do that for you. For each image you post, it will automatically make a few versions – thumbnail (150×150), medium (up to 300 px wide or high), medium- large (768 px wide), large (1024 px wide or high), full (original image). Moreover, WP adds srcset automatically.
8. Build an Image Sitemap
Apart from adding alt text and captions to your images, you can also provide additional details about them, as well as image URLs. By creating an XML sitemap, you are helping search engines find your images more efficiently. Google explains that by emphasizing the following:
“Additionally, you can use Google image extensions for sitemaps to give Google more information about the images available on your pages. Image sitemap information helps Google discover images that we might not otherwise find (such as images your site reaches with JavaScript code), and allows you to indicate images on your site that you want Google to crawl and index.”
The good thing is that, if you are using WordPress or Yoast, images are added to your sitemap automatically.
Over to You
Before you upload an image to your site, make sure it is optimized well for search engines. For starters, write an informative and spam-free image name, alt text, and caption. Then, choose the right image size and compress your images to boost your page load speed. Next, build an XML sitemap and invest in the structured data on your site to boost the exposure of your image and help it appear in Google’s rich results. Finally, make sure your images are responsive and user-friendly.
By following the tips mentioned above, you will increase your performance in the SERPs. Above all, you will increase user satisfaction, engage them, and encourage them to convert faster.

While looking for something different to play with, we ran across these water beads that make for a neat sensory play experience. They can also make a big mess if you have a kid who likes to squish them! But it is still neat to watch them grow and then stick your hands in a big bowl of squishy beads.
Water Beads Sensory Play
All you need to get started is a pack of water beads. There’s a bunch to choose from on Amazon. We just got a small pack of regular size beads, but you can choose everything from bead activity kits to jumbo size beads!
Check out the options: Water Beads on Amazon (affiliate link)
Then all you need is a big container, a bit of water and a little patience…
This is what we started with:
What Are Water Beads?
Water beads are little dehydrated non-toxic polymer gel beads that expand when soaked in water. They are often used in centerpieces and floral arrangements. Some types of beads actually hold water and can help keep plants hydrated. In fact, when we are done playing with the water beads I always put them in our potted plants and in the garden.
How Do You Use Water Beads for Sensory Play?
There’s a lot of different fun things to do with water beads, but we usually just put them in a big bowl and squish them around! There’s a TON of different activities on Pinterest! Click here to check out my board of Water Bead Activity Ideas that ranges from glowing beads to frozen beads to filling ballons with beads!
Just Add Water!
All you need to activate your beads is to add water. Then you wait… In about an hour you will see them swelling up and doubling in size, but also looking a little rough. My son couldn’t wait to play with them and decided to start taking them out and putting them in leaves and calling them boats. Then he added a bunch of leaves to the bowl. Then he started squishing them. Then there was a big gooey mess everywhere….
But it wasn’t too hard to clean up. Also, the little balls go back to their dehydrated size when they don’t have access to more water, so if you wait until then, they are easy to sweep away. It takes about two to four hours before they reach full size. Our beads were marble size when totally full.
What Can You Do with Water Beads?
The big bowl of them is fun to squish with your hands! But beyond just squishing them, there are several water bead activities you can also do like:
Create a sensory bin and fill it with different objects
Put them in a baggie to create a water bead bag
Put them in a bowl of shaving cream for a different feel
Freeze them
Smash them with a hammer
Put them in a blender and chop them up
Use tweezers and sort them by color
Mix the water beads with slime
Fill the bowl with different object and see if you can find them by touch. This is my son trying to find all the race cars:
…or you could do my son’s favorite water bead sensory activity and my least favorite:
10. Running them over with toy cars and leaving a giant mess
The easiest way to clean this up is to just step back wait. The next morning the mess will almost magically disappear as the water evaporates. Then you just sweep up the little crumbles.
What to Do with Them When You’re Done Playing
We like to make a big bowl and let it sit out for a few days as we find different things to do with them, but after a few days I get tired of finding little squishy balls everywhere. That’s when it’s time to dispose of them or save them. If you don’t want to keep them, you can dispose of them in the trash. Do not try and put them down the drain or disposal! You can also add them to your garden soil or potted plants to help keep them hydrated. This is my preferred method.
If you want to save them, you can either save them as they are or let them dehydrate back to little beads and store them that way. If you want to keep them filled with water, then store in an airtight bag, jar or bottle. They can be used to make a colorful display in pretty jars or glass bottles with lids. If you want them to shrink back to original size, then the quickest way to dehydrate them is to spread them in a single layer on a towel and sit them in the sun. The towel will absorb the water as it leaks out and they will return to their regular size. You should be able to rehydrate them again at a later date for more water bead fun!
*Currently experimenting with drying the water beads in the sun and then rehydrating them again and will update later with the results!
Water Beads Make for a Fun Sensory Play Experience While looking for something different to play with, we ran across these water beads that make for a neat sensory play experience.
