Listed: Spencer Cullum
Tumblr media
Spencer Cullum is a Nashville-based, London-born pedal steel player and guitarist. Cullum is co-founder of instrumental group Steelism and a member of Miranda Lambert’s band. His latest album as Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection, explores the classic folk of 1960s Britain and the motoric drive of 1970s krautrock in a gentle, glancing way that hardly features pedal steel at all. In her review, Jennifer Kelly observed that, “This self-titled sounds like a long lost, 1960s British folk album, stuffed in the racks behind the Pentangle, Fairport, Donovan and Incredible String Band discs, so that no one noticed it until now.”
Gong — “I Never Glid Before” (Live 1973)
youtube
The roots of electronic prog folk that encapsulates unbelievable musicianship and free form jazz. I first discovered their record Angel Egg when I was in my teens and it always felt like anything was possible, musically. It is easy to pin Gong’s approach as silly and ‘out there,’ but you try starting a band, making it look like a cult, arranging the most complex music and then trying to market it. Now where do I get one of those wizard hats?
Kevin Ayers — “May I”
youtube
Kevin Ayers is a big part of my new record, someone recently said his music and band reminded them of an English Velvet Underground, I can see that. It’s artistic and expressive to where it keeps its naïve beauty. Now where do I get one of those beautiful tartan flat caps that the accordion player is sporting?
Icebreaker play Eno/Lanois (feat. BJ Cole) — “Deep Blue Day (Apollo)”
youtube
I think this is the open window to where the pedal steel guitar can be taken. I’ve always treated the steel guitar as an instrument that can be treated as ‘orchestral.’ Never getting in the way but adding to a texture that lifts a piece of music and makes something panoramic.
Ian Dury and the Blockheads (feat. Wilko Johnson) — “Blockheads”
youtube
Essex’s Finest! Ian Dury was a force of nature. I’ve always been sometimes a little embarrassed of my thick Essex accent and stigma that surrounds Essex (especially Romford) and then I put on Ian Dury and realize its best to not give a fuck about that and be proud of your roots and manipulate them to your advantage.
Dr. Feelgood — “Roxette”
youtube
Sticking with my roots. Canvey Island down the road from where I was born (and where my father grew up) is some of the deepest British blues I’ve heard...THE THAMES DELTA!! Something in that Essex water! Or maybe it was all those jellied Eels they were eating.
John Martyn — “Couldn’t Love You More”
youtube
It’s really hard to watch this as you can see a man battling his demons. To see how John Martyn was so reckless and wild but to sound so fragile and beautiful. Solid Air was a gateway into my obsession with English Folk music. It’s a must!
Joni Mitchell — “In France they Kiss on Main Street”
youtube
I looked this video up and also found lots of bass player YouTube videos of them playing the Jaco parts to it. YES, its utter jazz nerd fusion music but its Joni at the helm which makes it one of the most beautiful evolving records made. I’ve been re-discovering late 70s /80s Joni Mitchell and even the songs that are slightly on the cusp of being self-absorbed they always have a way of being pulled back to make the listener feel they are relatable. Her 1985 record Dog Eat Dog has been a regular on the turn-table.
Pentangle — “Wedding Dress”
youtube
Tis winter time which obviously means that it’s Pentangle listening season. Some beautiful banjo playing from Bert Jansch which you rarely see him play. This era Pentangle is from the Reflection album which has been seeing a lot of playtime at my house.
Elyse Weinberg (with Neil Young) — “Houses”
youtube
My wife recently showed me this song (always ahead of the curve), and due to me living under a rock it seems to play a lot on every hip Netflix show or when I’m grabbing coffee at a local coffee shop it’s subconsciously playing on their playlist. I love the idea of a deep cut 70s folk song coming to life and being circulated around the world.
Ivor Cutler — “Pickle Your Knees”
youtube
I honestly cannot give you a short paragraph about Ivor Cutler. But why is there not a monument statue of him in Scotland, I don’t know, as he is a god amongst the poets and comedians or the 21st Century. ENJOY... and then listen to his back catalogue.

Of a day in 1968 - Massacres and other meannesses As Time Goes By, Derek Taylor
The word is that the press are going to massacre Apple which is a big deal.  Ray Coleman who edits Disc and Music Echo tells me ‘the knives are out’, which is another big deal Jeremy Pascall from Rave and Nineteen magazine tells me he only wants the truth.
Don Short from the Daily Mirror says Dougie Marlborough of the Daily Mail really has it in for Apple, for the Beatles and for me.  Bob Barr of the Westinghouse Broadcasting Co. says he has no respect for the British press.  Lucinda Franks promises me that UPI will carry a more favourable story than AP.  Allan Hall of the Sun says George Harrison is not the man he used to be.  Five reporters from the Daily Express conclude that the Apple has gone sour and quote the company’s leading competitor in support of their conclusion.  Ho ho.  The Evening News says that the Rolling Stones have a greater sense of responsibility than the Beatles.  The People has secured an exclusive interview with Brian Epstein, taped by Ivor Novello and shipped through a medium in West Hampstead.  Anne Nightingale from the Daily Sketch wishes she hadn’t been in Tunisia when the anti-Beatle storm broke.  She would have written something nice about them.  The Liverpool Daily Post hopes the Beatles haven’t forgotten their humble beginnings; the Western Mail, Cardiff, hopes Mary Hopkin hasn’t forgotten hers.  The Sunday Mirror believes John Lennon to be in Austria.  The Evening Standard wants some facts; Stella from the Daily Telegraph doesn’t know ‘anything about pop music*’.  ‘What’s Donovan’s first name?’ she asks.  ‘How do you spell Angelo, Michael?’ Phillip Palmer of Record Retailer wants to share the Beatles’ financial secrets.  Bill Harry of Liverpool wants the boys to play the cavern again.  Bill Marshall of the Daily Mirror doesn’t want the Derek Taylor to change.  Tony Barrow of NEMS doesn’t want to comment.  I don’t want to die.  The BBC doesn’t want to know.  Melody Maker just needs something for the front page.
Time Out would like an advertisement for Wonderwall as they’re good enough to review it this month.  Record Retailer would like an ad just for being there.  The Sunday Times would like to be congratulated for staying away.  The Sun would like to be forgiven for rising, and the rain would like to be forgiven for falling.  Every day has a life of its own, and the press marks time.  For us who live in black and in grey the only white is in our children’s eyes.
World at One wonders what’s happening?  Scene and Heard thinks Ringo has the answer to the Beatles’ image.  Nova wants Yoko to approve the article.  Look magazine won’t let Yoko approve theirs.  Fabulous magazine is no longer Fabulous, and Petticoat’s readers no longer wear them.  Private Eye went public.  I would like to go private.  So what on earth am I doing writing all this down?  I must be crazy.  I am crazy.  And so are you.  And so are they.  So it’s OK.
*she later learned plenty.  she is a fan now.

Happy Birfday Jeff Beck Born: June 24, 1944 in Wallington, England
Geoffrey Arnold Beck is an English rock guitarist. He is one of the three noted guitarists to have played with the Yardbirds. Beck also formed the Jeff Beck Group and with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, he formed Beck, Bogert & Appice.
Much of Beck's recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound, and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues rock, hard rock, and an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Although he recorded two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not established or maintained the sustained commercial success of many of his contemporaries and bandmates. Beck appears on albums by Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Morrissey, Donovan, Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, Malcolm McLaren, Kate Bush, Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Zucchero, Cyndi Lauper, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Stanley Clarke, Screaming Lord Sutch, ZZ Top, and Toots and the Maytals.
He was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and the magazine, upon whose cover Beck has appeared three times, has described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". He is often called a "guitarist's guitarist". Beck has earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014 he received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of The Yardbirds(1992) and as a solo artist(2009).

Beginnings: Ida Lupino’s London
A radical and important figure of classical Hollywood, Ida Lupino paved the way for tougher roles for women in front of and behind the camera. With a career spanning almost 50 years on stage and screen, she was noted for portraying controversial characters, gaining her the hard image as the so-called British Jean Harlow or, as she famously quipped in typically spiky self-deprecation, ‘a poor man’s Bette Davis.’
Equally, when directing, she was drawn to touch-paper topics, daring the largely male studio system to blink first and winning more times than losing. With such a specifically Hollywood persona, in particular due to her important relationship with film noir and her rebellious determination to work how she pleased, it’s easy to forget that her background was not in dark highways, studio lots or run-down whiskey joints but in South London suburbia where her interest in acting was first sparked. For Lupino, acting was a family matter.
The world in which Lupino was born was not a safe or secure one by any means. She was born on 4 February, 1918, at 33 Ardbeg Road between Herne Hill and North Dulwich. The city was in the midst of bombing, some of the most effective of the war. All was not well in the Lupino household either, for there were complications with the birth. Her mother, Connie O’Shea, was a noted stage performer under the name of Connie Emerald and starred in several films though was quickly overtaken by her daughter’s natural ability on screen.
Ida’s father, Stanley, was a musical hall success, starring and writing a number of British comedies, including Graham Cutts’ Over She Goes, as well as working extensively for BBC radio. The acting dynasty of the family went as far back as the Seventeenth Century so it was a natural profession for her to gravitate towards. In fact, it was more than natural but really a pressure for her to begin work in the family business as soon as was possible. With a strong connection to Stanley in particular, his influence turned into training from a very young age. ‘My father, she said, ‘started training me for grown-up roles when I was seven.’
She supported herself as soon as she was able to, her father determined to make her a success in the industry that he and Connie worked so hard in, just like their extensive ancestry. It was not work without its due rewards as the family soon moved from Ardbeg Road to 152 Leigham Court Road in Streatham. Though today the sight now houses blocks of flats, the house at the time was lavish. Stanley in particular would make great financial successes in the film industry in the following decade, at one point earning £20,000 a year in a lucrative three-picture deal. By then Lupino had made her own way into film, already out-ranking her mother’s attempts to break into the industry from the stage.
Tumblr media
Her very first role, albeit uncredited, came at the age of 13 in The Love Race, a film produced, written by and starring Stanley, as well as directed by Stanley’s cousin, Lupino Lane, and starring Lane’s own brother Wallace Lupino. A year later and things were very different. Ida came into her own for her first major role, a lead no less, in Allan Dwan’s Her First Affair. Aside from being a production with little direct involvement from the family, it was essential as she went up against her own mother in reading for the role and got it.
It took only another year for Ida to catch the eye of the much bigger American industry, attention drawn to her role in Bernard Vorhaus’ Money for Speed. She had already made waves in the British industry before she left, in particular impressing her godfather Ivor Novello who helped cast her in Maurice Elvey’s I Lived with you. But it was Paramount talent scout Donovan Pedelty who spotted her, a big offer for her to play the role of Alice in Norman Z McLeod’s Alice in Wonderland and a multiple picture deal on the table.
It was in 1933 when Lupino began the slow but steady journey to Hollywood. A big fanfare was arranged as Ida was given a grand send-off at Waterloo Station, photographs of which still exist today. She was incredibly nervous about the move, not least because she knew the first role that she was going to test for was not one she had any intention of taking. Charlotte Henry would take the role of Alice in McLeod’s film, a picture that also saw early sound roles for Gary Cooper and Cary Grant. She is skilful in the photos at hiding her apprehension in leaving London but the pride on show makes them a beautiful and emotional memento.
Today, Ardbeg Road is quiet and leafy, a far cry from the glamour and drama of Hollywood that Ida would soon find herself battling. The house is marked with plaques to celebrate both her and her father’s time on the road. But, in spite of Stanley’s initial sadness at being alone, Connie accompanying Ida on the crossing from Southampton to New York, there’s no doubt that she more than fulfilled the ambition to continue in the family line.

a mess of an oc relationship chart for the main group. yay. =____= under the cut ^_^
Tumblr media
um. i think that's everyone in this general. circle.
maitiu is the main character. he and zara grew up together in a town along the coastline. after major flooding, they move further inland, and in with maitiu's older cousin, tonia, and her wife (lena), and lena's younger sibling (gabi).
zara is maitiu's best friend, and she regards him as a brother. not pictured above are her friendships with vasko and kae (chart got too cramped in that top section).
gabi is the one to introduce zara and maitiu to vasko. vasko and gabi have been friends since they were little, and both of them are quick to accept zara and maitiu as friends
jaiden and kae are two siblings who move into town later in the story, due to various mysterious circumstances. yay. maitiu quickly strikes up a friendship (and later, more :)) with jaiden. after finding their way into town, jaiden and kae find work with molly, a woman running the local. um. pharmacy? not the right word.
kae takes a while to warm up to the others, but she eventually befriends gabi, who brings her further into the group of friends.
vasko does not like jaiden. he could not give you a reason why, beyond that he finds him annoying. this causes some occasional tensions with maitiu. kae doesn't seem to mind his beef with her brother.
ivor is vasko's older brother, and jaiden befriends him after they both get hired to help renovate the old school house in town. this is also where they meet donovan, who is one of molly's friends.

Jeff Beck (born 24 June 1944) is an English #rock #guitarist. He is one of the three noted #guitarists to have played with The Yardbirds (the other two being Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page). Beck also formed The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice.
Much of Beck's recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound, and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion, and an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Although he recorded two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not established or maintained the sustained commercial success of many of his contemporaries and bandmates.[1][2] Beck appears on albums by Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Morrissey, Jon Bon Jovi, Malcolm McLaren, Kate Bush, Roger Waters, Donovan, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Zucchero, Cyndi Lauper, Brian May, Stanley Clarke, Screaming Lord Sutch, ZZ Top, and Toots and the Maytals.[3]
He was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and the magazine, upon whose cover Beck has appeared three times, has described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock".[4] He is often called a "guitarist's guitarist".[1] Beck has earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014 he received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.[5] Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and as a solo artist (2009).
