DISTORTIONS IN INDIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY
Tumblr media
ESTABLISHED IN 1993, THE HINDU UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA IS A SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY OFFERING MASTER'S AND DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN HINDU STUDIES AND MASTER OF ARTS IN SANSKRIT. IN ADDITION, THEY OFFER VARIOUS CERTIFICATION AND FURTHER EDUCATION COURSES. THE UNIVERSITY HAS ANNOUNCED MORE THAN 30 COURSES FOR THE FALL 2021 QUARTER, WHICH STARTS IN THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER 2021. AFTER ENROLLING OVER 500 STUDENTS IN EACH OF THE PAST 3 QUARTER, HUA EXPECTS SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN THE NEXT YEAR.
Deformations in Indian Historiography
The writing of Indian history in its modern form began under British rule and continued in the early decades of Indian independence. In retrospect, we can attribute certain limitations to it, but it was generally fair and in line with the prevailing international standards at the time. However, since the 1970s the distortion of the historical record has become fundamental, arbitrary and officially sanctioned, mostly with a clear ideological motive. It was easily identifiable as anti-Hindu, but presented itself as anti-communal. We need to examine the circumstances behind this shift promoted by Indira Gandhi, her Political Secretary PN Haksar and her Education Minister Nurul Hasan. In doing so, we have the testimonies of eyewitnesses like SN, Dilip Chakrabarti and Sita Ram Goel and investigators like Arun Shourie.
Despite expectations and rumours, the Narendra Modi government has so far maintained this situation and all talk of 'saffronisation' of education is pure fantasy. On the other hand, it is true that among Hindu traditionalists a much smaller problem of distortion of history persists on the fringes, not with official support but with enough decibels for the public to notice. The two poles of the violation of conscientious historiography use each other for self-justification.
The idea of India
From some three millennia, visible already in the editing of the Mahābhārata, India had the ideal of political unification under a "universal ruler" or Cakravarti. In fact, Aśoka Maurya came closest to this ideal, followed by the Guptas and Moghuls, and Queen Victoria most closely. But even in its worst periods of political fragmentation, India had a sense of cultural unity, embodied in pilgrimage routes and Sanskrit. Ancient Greco-Roman or Arab visitors had no problem recognizing the existence of an "India" or "Hindu" entity. As British independence loomed on the horizon, historians in the mold of RC Majumdar emphasized this basic unity.

“We certainly have to get beyond … the climate deniers,” he said in the April 2019 interview with C-SPAN. “But we also have to get beyond what we think are often completely unrealistic proposals for the pace at which we can decarbonize.” Fighting climate change at the pace needed would require a “broad coalition,” he said – one that included the oil and gas industry.
Moniz was wading into a dispute that will define how the new Biden administration tackles the crisis: can oil and gas companies be part of the solution? Or have they proven, with years of disinformation campaigns and efforts to slow climate action, that they will always stand in the way?
As the Biden transition team wrestles with this question, it is already facing pressure from activists not to hire more people with fossil fuel ties, like Louisiana congressman Cedric Richmond, who will join Biden’s White House as a top adviser.

President Elect Joe Biden is literally sprinting toward addressing climate change, the environment and climate and environmental justice
Highlights from stories from the Washington Post:
A few days after being declared president-elect, Joe Biden is already conferring with heads of state about a crisis he sees as on par with the coronavirus pandemic and economic recession: climate change. Biden and his soon-to-be counterparts in Great Britain, France, Germany and Ireland discussed tackling climate change in separate calls, according to a readout from the transition team. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau committed to working with Biden on climate change during a Monday call.
Biden told British Prime Minister Boris Johnson his administration will participate a global climate conference next year in Glasgow, Scotland. The Trump administration was set to snub the talks if the president won reelection. Biden has promised to reenter the Paris agreement on “day one.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised the issue of the Keystone XL pipeline. The project was put forward more than a decade ago as a way from bringing Canada’s tar sands to Gulf Coast refineries. The proposal became been flashpoint for environmentalists who tried under Barack Obama to stop it. During the campaign in May, Biden said he would rescind a Trump administration permit for the pipeline. At the time, Trudeau responded by saying he would press any U.S. leader to approve the project.
The head of the transition team for the Environmental Protection Agency is Patrice Simms, an attorney at Earthjustice, a nonprofit law firm that as sued the Trump administration dozens of times. His elevation is a sign of Biden's desire to reinstitute rules rolled back by the Trump administration. He has also worked at both the EPA and Department of Justice.
For the Interior Department team, the transition will be run by Kevin Washburn, a former assistant secretary of Indian affairs and a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma — a choice that suggests an emphasis on tribal issues at the department. He is currently dean at the University of Iowa College of Law.
Arun Majumdar will head the transition for the Energy Department. Under Obama, he was the first director of the department's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, an incubator of research and development on novel energy technologies that draws bipartisan support in Congress. He is now at a professor at Stanford.
Cecilia Martinez, a well-respected environmental justice advocate, will lead the transition at the Council on Environmental Quality in a signal the Biden administration will focus on the disproportionate impact pollution has on people of color.

The letter was partly a response to an interview the school’s inaugural dean, Arun Majumdar, gave to my Times…
