The 6th Annual Ulster County Executive’s Arts Awards are coming up (June 5)! Get your tickets today to support the amazing awardees - Arts Organization: Arm of the Sea Theater- is an arts ensemble that fuses visual storytelling with live music in contemporary works of mask and puppet theater. Founded in 1982 by Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden, the company's hybrid style channels the evocative power of the arts as a force for joy, insight, and community uplift. Their low-tech devices of theatrical enchantment illuminate relations between humans and the life-support networks of this blue-ocean planet. The creative team includes musicians Eli Winograd, Dean Jones and Juan Basilio Sanchez, designer Jean Whelan, and performers Kira deCoudres, Ernest Goodmaw, Anna Hafner, Sam Shippee, and Soyal Smalls. Arm-of-the-Sea tours its original productions to cultural centers, festivals, and schools throughout the Northeast. They also host a hometown performance event, THE ESOPUS CREEK PUPPET SUITE, each August in Saugerties, NY. #artsmidhudson #togetherwecreate #artsawards #ulstercounty #artsorganization #create #perform #educate #theatre

National Theatre Posters: A Design History / Available at www.draw-down.com / Written and compiled by design writer #RickPoynor — A comprehensive survey of the London theatre’s best posters from the 1960s to the present day. For more than 50 years, the #NationalTheatre has used #posters to promote and give visual expression to the enormous range of productions that it stages. While other major British #artsorganizations also utilize posters, it would be hard to find in-house relationships with #designers as continuous and stable as those seen at the theatre. An enormous range of graphic approaches has been used — #typographic #illustrative and #photographic. This diversity of expression reflects the designers’ temperaments and skills, the fashions of the time and changing conceptions of the most effective way to communicate graphically with the theatre’s audiences. Designed by #Spin #graphicdesign (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br233ESgpCi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ai7uzu09jz4a

EAC Investment in Organizations 2021 and Beyond
It was certainly an interesting spring and summer.
The cancellations will sting in our memories, and the financial aftershocks need to be managed. We have all had to adjust to the reality of hand sanitizer, masks, video conferences, and the absence of the usual events that mark our progression through summer. The alternative presentations online and outside have been both inspiring and a bittersweet reminder of what normally would have been. Some artists and organizations have withdrawn and hibernated, while others have been busier than ever. Everyone is doing their best at the moment.
As with all things, this too shall pass. Artists continue to create. Some ensembles are already exploring new formats. Over time, venues will open, and the audiences will return in whatever form or way that they can. We will never be quite the same – but now we need to think ahead as a community; to explore, to play, and to build anew.
The Edmonton Arts Council has already made a number of changes to directly support artists and arts professionals in response to COVID-19. We now need to look to the support of Organizations in 2021. In this journey, we are fortunate to have an existing map. Connections & Exchanges: A 10-Year Plan To Transform Arts and Heritage In Edmonton was developed and adopted well before this crisis, but the Ambitions that it outlines are still viable and relevant. We remain committed to pursuing that future with the partnership and support of the City of Edmonton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we think about our role in supporting Organizations, we are anchored by the Aim in Book 4 of Connections & Exchanges:
New and existing arts and heritage organizational capacity enables innovation and builds resilience in the sector.
In pursuit of that Aim we had suspended old systems, and increased 2020 investments last February. The plan was to spend the rest of the year developing a multi-year operating strategy to be implemented in early 2021. That plan was derailed, as so many things were in March.
We expect to continue to invest in Arts and Festival organizations in 2021 – as we have been doing for nearly 25 years. The question has become how to do that, given the range of new circumstances that our community faces. We cannot return to any status-quo or historical system. To do so would be to deny the real impact of 2020, and the creative responses that our community is bringing to bear. It would also mean turning away from our commitments in Connections & Exchanges, including responding to those who seek equitable access.
Therefore, we are developing new structures that will guide the EAC’s investment in organizations for 2021.  We are building towards three main pillars:
1) Sustain
We plan to provide an early 2021 investment based on the need to maintain some existing organizational capacity, regardless of other circumstances. The current plan is to target a calculated percentage of the annual grant from 2020, without in-depth current assessments.  The application process will be based on a data-gathering survey exercise rather than significant text or narrative requests.
2) Activate
Many arts and festival groups are actively pursuing artistic, developmental, and presentation activities, or hope to do so in 2021. That resilience is based in the work of artists and other professionals that are engaged by those organizations. We intend to provide more than one opportunity to invest in that activity, open to existing grant recipients, as well as new organizations. Peer assessment of merit will be a key part of guiding those decisions, as will an awareness of public health guidelines and risks.
3) Invent and Adapt
Since it is clear we will never be entirely the same, we must together set new courses. Through Connections & Exchanges, the EAC is committed to enabling innovation, and investing in change. Organizations have the opportunity now to consider what their missions and visions are – how they will pursue their new future. The EAC will support that work through investments, but also through community dialog, workshops and research in 2021 and beyond.
We welcome your input and discussion. To that end we will be continuing the ongoing Virtual Coffee series of discussions with Stephen Williams, the EAC’s Grants Director.
We also invite organizations to join an online info session led by Stephen Williams on Friday September 25 at 1pm. To register and receive the link to the session, or for further information, please email [email protected]
If you have specific questions you hope to have addressed, please feel free to submit them in advance to [email protected]. An ASL interpreter will be provided, and the session will be recorded and posted on our website.
