That’s why I really love christmas (or rather winter season) a lot. It’s freezing as all hell and it’ll suck sometimes to be out when the streets and stuff make the snow all gross and muddy and the sky is nothin but grey-

but before all of that, when there’s snowfall and there’s warm lights everywhere and people just look forward to the fun of eachother’s company and the upbeat music and just general atmosphere…

It has never gotten old for me.

What do you use as references for your animations like the water ballet? I'm making a fight sequence animation and I'm having trouble applying my references to my animation. Do you rotoscope a gesture at main points and then add form and tweens after? Any advice will help :)

that's about it, yup! honestly, though, by the third animation i was getting really lazy. the first one is almost all original, from skeleton to hair, save for a few frames that were giving me trouble that i stole some anatomy from. the third one tho...........goddamn i was hella lazy. i rotoscoped every third frame or so because i really just wanted to get to the water, which is the fun part. now i feel really guilty about it but wHATEVER I DO WHAT I WANT

few tips that i learned from my ~*~vast experience~*~ with animating:

HAIR.  HAIR IS HARD. it does not move before or at the same time as the head. movement always starts with the head--the hair should trail behind it. that being said, it also then swishes back and forth when the movement stops. really the only way you're going to figure it out is to watch gifs/videos of hair moving

ALSO, hair spreads and separates at the end of a movement! for instance, when you stop turning your head, if you have long hair it will swish out in a sheet, then settle back into its usual shape.

if you move a single limb, the rest of the body is moving too. hell, if you're moving just your knee, the rest of the body is moving too. if you only move one thing at a time it looks really stiff and unnatural.

fabric is the bane of your existence never do it. make everyone naked. save yourself

jk dont do that but really. loose fabric can be just as annoying as hair. also something you're going to have to study 

movements dont usually have a cold start. for instance, in the water ballet gifs, whenever katara goes into a spin, she bounces a bit on her foot first. likewise, if someone is throwing a punch, they're probably going to lean back a little first.

HANDS ARE IMPORTANT. HANDS ARE SO SO SO SO SO IMPORTANT. not just in animation but in still drawing too. they have a disproportionately ginormous impact on the gesture and 'feel' of a pose. luckily for u they dont need to be super detailed in an animation, but make sure you're happy and consistent on your hands.

MAKE SURE YOU DEFINE YOUR 'FLOOR.' even in my animations, which are basically a figure in blank white space, i had sketch lines for the floor because if feet start sliding and jumping around, it looks hella awkward

last but not least, dont be afraid to rotoscope. i would never have learned all those things as thoroughly as i did if i hadnt literally gone over it twelve times. even a 100% rotoscoped animation is your art
