the first person in our football circle to encounter the terror was someone who isn’t even currently in terror fandom: it was @kloppend, who has a fondness for adventure novels, and like...five? years ago regaled me, @imkerin, and @zevons about a terrible book she read about a demon polar bear that ate the franklin expedition. we thought this enormously delightful. then she read the abominable, also by dan simmons, and for some reason the two got conflated in our minds, so for literal years we roasted sharon about her trashy nazi yeti books

there was a trend in the summer of 2019 where the side of les mis fandom i still kept in touch with either tripped and fell into bbc ghosts or the terror or both, for very obvious reasons. and  so i started seeing friends from les-mis-fandom-that-was whose taste i deeply respected, like @bro-stoevsky and @laissezferre, start getting into this series, and because we were all too busy roasting sharon about her yetis i completely failed to make the connection. but no matter, i watched it in like...may? june? sometime around when sabs and frauke watched it i think? and of course i fell in love with it immediately. also i distinctly remember binging episodes 1-8 in two days and taking a literal week to watch 9 because i knew that was the episode where jfj and blanky died and i wasn’t sure i could handle it.

also on top of that football fandom has a tendency to be kind of cliquish (i cheerfully include myself in this judgment) and if you post an artpoop you get maybe 20 notes on it tops, whereas the few terror posts/doodles i flung into the arctic circle got an incredibly warm reception. then at the end of august a whole bunch of us had a “what if terror football au” brainwave all at the same time (there is discord evidence of this) and thought, what the hell, let’s make a self-indulgent football club, and to our immense shock and gratification it was received so well that we dove headfirst into terror fandom and never looked back.

(of course at some point we also realized with deep horror that this had been based on the book we had roasted shaz about for years, but that is another story.)

anyway this is just to say @kloppend has not yet watched the terror because 1. she doesn’t like tuunbaq’s tv design because she was picturing a cute polar bear the entire time she was reading the original dimmons novel and 2. she was put off by how bad said novel is. everyone go harass her and make her watch it anyway

How did you find The Terror?

The Terror didn’t seem to get the promotion it deserved when it premiered (in the US) two years ago today. How did you find it? 

My story: About a year ago, I heard that George Takei was making a series about the WWII internment camps and I thought - wow - that will be really interesting.  In the course of finding out about the second series I saw there had been a previous season and that it was about the Franklin Expedition. Oh yes. Now we’re talking. Victorians? Historically based horror? Running around in the snow being chased by a monster? Sign me up! 

Fast forward to me watching Season One. I had exactly ZERO expectations for this thing. I figured it would be like Dog Soldiers but set in the Arctic. Oh my goodness, how wrong I was. It was a Saturday (thankfully) about noon when I watched episode 1. I watched all 10 episodes in one sitting. Then I cried. Then I called my sister and said “You have to watch this. Right. Now.” Then I started episode 1 again. And I haven’t really stopped since.

So how did the rest of you fall into the appropriate hole?
