I've found posting consistently on Instagram to be a challenge. One of my goals for myself was that I would post every day, at least once a day. The last few weeks were so emotional for me, it was hard to be on any form of social media. Well I fully understand and appreciate the importance of consistency, being in the right emotional space is also really important. On Mediated Culture

The way in which the world is presented in media is refracted. We like to suppose that everything that comes from the Internet is not as valid or credible a source as printed ones are. Or ones that we see on TV. However, what is presented in new media is essentially what we’ve seen before from old media. The same personalities in movies or on TV or the news are the same ones we see featured in online articles or videos.

In an article, Neil Postman’s concept of media ecology is mentioned in talking about the conversations produced by media: “the notion of media ecology reminds us that media become the environments in which we live.”

We subscribe to this new form of media, which in turn, permeates our daily lives. With the rapid development of the Internet, it’s a given that its consumers would eventually go on to create a kind of community that exists in that virtual space.

New media has engendered a space for social interaction and action. It is easier to discern what the world needs from us, simply because it’s declared on a Facebook post or a tweet. It seems everything online nowadays calls to and for our ethical stance. There would be an online fashion magazine spread who, because of their use of real fur, becomes a moving target for animal advocates. A story or photo of an abuser circulating online becomes a cautionary tale.

One phenomenon that was created from new media—and one easily distorted—is “cancel culture”. It starts with this: a tweet, a post, a news article on a prominent figure surfaces and suddenly thousands of people will offer their thoughts. Often, these thoughts transform to declarations.

“Time to unstan.”

“If you’re woke, boycott this (person/brand/company).”

At first, it’s easy to subscribe to this kind of culture. It’s easy to be swayed by the opinions expressed by a tweet or two. There are times when I get passionate about a cause and about an aggressor that is accused of attacking this cause. Anger is good, I am told. Anger is the way we hold these aggressors accountable. This is how we create change. And so as a result, I refused to consume anything related to the aggressor. Whether it’s a song, a show, a movie or any kind of project.

In return, a sort of network is sustained. One that feeds on support and kindness and empathy. A dialogue will materialize and suddenly, we’re able to teach each other and learn from our mistakes. Victims can come forward. Offenders can own up to their actions. But only if there is evidence and drive to keep aggressors accountable. Only if there are people who truly care about the cause; that these people aren’t just riding it out in hopes for some personal clout or traction. In reality, the kind of community I described is an ideal. This isn’t really how we create change. The anger from our social media presence isn’t enough without some tangible action. 

There is some sort of balance you must strike when posting your opinions on social media. People who follow you or people you follow can easily turn against you once they disagree with something you say.

New media does not only touch on the personal, it has social and economic implications as well. In an interview for an article, Sarah Rabia comments on how “cancel culture” affects brands: “The language of cancel is quite transactional. It’s like applying a ‘cancel subscriptions’ mindset to a human being or brand.” This is true. I remember an article saying that Forever 21 was copying designs for its shirts from real artists. I remember an article saying that Zara makes use of factories wherein children are used for manual labor. To this day, I can’t step in either shops without feeling as if I’m failing an imaginary test. As if I’m betraying the artists or the children.

Really, who passes judgement when we’re either persuaded or dissuaded by a comment or a post or a tweet? Other times, I want to be unassuming. I may be vocal about social causes but I no longer tweet angrily about it. In reality, I feel as though my opinions begin to lack substance after a while. I’ve unknowingly formed a passive attitude to the events that happen in the world.

Ultimately, I disagree with the kind of culture that continues from the advent of new media. Or perhaps, I want to believe I disagree and quit it altogether. I want to understand what it is that’s happening in the world without any bias (from a thread of tweets or from the top video on what my Facebook recommends) coloring my perspective. But that would be a reach. I am kept by new media and the communities it has set up for me online. I see that it could bring about positive change, only if we are all in the right head space.

Over the last few days I’ve been working on the script for my new video, and it’s proving really challenging. . I thought I would be filming more of my playful crazy clown today, but the wild wind of creativity has taken me in a new direction. It’s time for me to make another sincere attempt at telling the story of my invisible illness. Just dropped a new YouTube video yesterday, which feels like a major accomplishment, given the struggle it took to create it. This was the first video I ever created where I used a portion of a symphonic Beethoven piece in combination with a voiceover. Getting the sound levels right was such a magnificent struggle. I’m glad I did it, now I know how to work with a complex piece of music that has great variation in audio levels. The video I published isn’t perfect, and you can’t always hear my voice perfectly, but I learned a lot! Pulling together a YouTube video that has all the elements of great story, great performance great vision and create audio, is such a wonderful challenge. Working on the final scene of my latest video has proved profoundly challenging. Finding the right words to describe experiences that so easily escape the envelope of language, is a kind of magic. I want to explore the topic of invisible illness, a difficult topic to discuss, in a compelling, truthful and refreshing way.
