2/2 It’s going to be really weird not having a city centre space, not just somewhere to make work, but somewhere to hideout. A place to dump stuff and go in the city, or leave my camera whilst I go for a skate, and especially weird to not have somewhere to go and eat my lunch from the market and watch Netflix on my phone. I’m not going to miss the summer heat in there, or the freezing winter cold, huddled next to my fan heater in so many layers trying to draw, or even just move to carry on painting. And I’m not going to miss lugging bits of wood, and deliveries of paint between my home and the space. Since I fist moved in to the studio my practice has developed so much, I’m more confident in the work I make, and the area I can make stuff. I’m hoping that having a studio at home will mean I can be a little more organised with my output. I’m planning on getting a few more products, multiples and prints out in 2022, and work on some more ambitious paintings, hopefully do a bigger show somewhere. The clear out has meant I’ve found a bunch of older works, so keep an eye out for a sale of those in the near future as well. 1/2 Yesterday I left my studio at Space ( @spacestudiosnorwich ). If you’ve been following my Stories you may have seen that I’ve been clearing it out for a few weeks. Over these past couple of years I’ve been using the space less and less. In between lockdowns, and just avoiding the city, and starting a new job, I’ve rarely been able to get there once a week, if that. A few months ago our housemate moved out, leaving Audrone and I with a spare room, which will become my studio space, and a storage room. I am, of course, a little sad to be leaving the space. It’s been my second home for almost 10 years. I moved into the room (in studio Number 1) back in December 2012, having graduated from my BA at @norwichuniarts that Summer. Me and @guy.jarrett were the first two people to have spaces in the newly opened studios. Back then the studio enabled me to have somewhere that wasn’t just a desk or bedroom floor to make work. I think that after leaving art school it can be so difficult to carry on making work, and having the studio was really important in being able to continue making things. Over the past decade (nearly) the space has helped me develop my work to where it is now, pretty much everything I’ve made since 2013 has been made inside this little area. From the early stuff I made straight out of art school, to the works for my first solo shows. It was my main studio throughout my Masters course ( @nuamasters )and was where I made the work which was selected for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries @newcontemps , as well as the @saatchiart Rising Stars Report. I’ve made countless zines, paintings, drawings, filled the space with so much spray paint I’ve had to go skate until the dust settled down. I’ve done interviews, been recorded and filmed in the space, the walls are thick with layers of paint, and had almost every idea I’ve had scrawled onto them. Kind of a dingy pic, but that's because I really haven't used this space all summer due to the extreme weather (40+ heat in June and in the 30s C° ever since, and heavy smoke from wildfires a province away). So I'm excited to finally be able to clean the dust off of this area as well as the rest of this room because the temperatures are finally back in the 20s where they would be normally! Hoping that, barring another heat wave, I can get some actual painting done, ffs!
