Today I wrote 3000 words on my book. I also made homemade sourdough bread which took all day. (Thank you Jeannine for the starter).Now I know why God created the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It was to give a woman a break.😂 I couldn't have sourdough bread without clam chowder so I made homemade clam chowder to go with it. Tastes like I'm in San Fran. Mmmmm. A friend made this beautiful tiny piece of art from an old twist-tie. I was baking my weekly bread orders, she was sitting at my kitchen table as we talked. Another weed I love to eat: violet leaves. Violets grow wild throughout my yard. Yesterday I weeded/harvested around my garden beds, and chopped the bounty into this salad of beets, chickpeas, celery, sweet onion, and leftover rice. I swear I’ll get back to art making soon but right now it’s all about bread and forage. Today I made a delicious light sourdough pumpernickel which I served to friends along with my nettle pesto spread. The pesto: nettle leaves, steamed and squeezed dry, puréed with toasted walnuts, Parmesan, olive oil, smoked paprika, a little garlic, a little salt, and a splash of lemon juice. . I forgot to photograph the bread before it was sliced, but all the ingredient measurements (in grams) are visible on the scale in these photos, including: starter, water, wheat and rye flour, salt, caraway seeds, blackstrap molasses, and cocoa powder. I think I’ll continue to allow my daily art making to drift into the kitchen every once in a while, especially on days like this, when I stand up from my desk after a morning of bills and emails and my back tells me clearly — no more sitting. I decided to use the opportunity, as well as the gift of eggs my beautiful friend @thesoul.center (and her beautiful chickens) gave to me. . The result: handmade pasta! Just two ingredients: flour and eggs. (Along with leftover ratatouille, some chicken of the woods mushrooms I sautéed and froze this fall, some parmesan, and a little decadent bit of fried bacon, dinner is complete.) . Here’s the recipe: . The flour: 2 parts semolina, 1 part all-purpose, 1 part whole wheat, but you can vary that however you like. . The eggs: whole, at room temperature, as many as it takes to form a dough. (You can also add a little olive oil and water if you don’t want to use so many eggs)— I used about 3.5 cups of flour and five medium-to-large sized eggs) . Knead until smooth, at least 3 minutes. Wrap the dough ball and let rest at room temperature, 30 minutes or more. . Roll out fist-sized chunks of dough a floured surface into a long, narrow, 1/8-inch thick slab. Roll or fold up the slab, flouring as you go so it doesn’t stick to itself, then cut and separate the strands. Spread your noodles on the counter so they don’t stick together. . Cook in well-salted gently boiling water until tender. Let’s call it a food day. First up: pizza made from extra whole wheat sourdough I’d previously frozen, topped with hen of the woods mushrooms I’d gathered and dried last fall (soaked in water for ten minutes to reconstitute), leftover steamed nettles, plus fresh onions and red peppers… Also in the works: garlic mustard sauerkraut (wild invasive green “weed” that grows everywhere.) My favorite way to prepare it: liberally salted and pounded to release the juices, then bottle it up so the leaves are under the liquid and leave loosely covered on the counter for a few days until it develops a nice sour tangy flavor.
