For the lyrics thing, there's this old song alone again naturally. and there's this verse :
But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt Talk about, God in His mercy Oh, if he really does exist Why did he desert me In my hour of need I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that There are more hearts broken in the world That can't be mended Left unattended What do we do What do we do
Alone again, naturally
and it just reminds me of Morgana
this gives me a lot of mixed feelings
Tumblr media
on one hand everyone around morgana tried to not make her feel so alone like the way royals can: balls, parties, court, maids, cultural activities, letting her commit altruistic endeavors and be the voice of justice for the oppressed;
on the other hand, her dreams and visions cut her off from most of these people, her fellow nobility thought of her as weak, sickly, a little mad, embarrassing at times, servants deferred to her and kept their distance;
she was often drugged and kept in the dark, made to believe that her visions were just her imagination. she's like a bird in a gilded cage, like a she-wolf in the closet.
in that sense she was a lot lonelier compared to every other nobility;
and when she found her people, they were slaughtered mercilessly by her own family causing her to resent them even more;
when she continued desperately seek her people out, they manipulated her, used her, fed into her anger, lied to her, poisoned her, driving her further and further away from the life she had known, turning her to the path of a battle hardened destabilizer and usurper;
She then surrounded herself with other radicals, made allies, established goons. she captured pendragon-loyalists and tried to break down their morale to get her to join her. Established a network of connections loyal to her cause.
Answered cruelty with even greater cruelty.
By all means she had more people than any other political leader in their story.
And yet Morgana was still the entity at the top of the pyramid, The last high priestess, she had been told repeatedly, the lone true champion of their cause.
It was still essentially a very lonely world (being the savior of all.) It's an egotistical mindset (and she wasn't the only one with this.)
And then she paid for her sins multiple times. She found herself in the forest alone and half dead. She was captured, imprisoned and tortured in what was basically tomb with a creature that can't even talk. Two years she was left to her nightmares, her visions, her madness, the very things that kept others away from her since she was born.
And at the end of it all, after she committed her final act of revenge, she was slaughtered and left to rot in the elements by the very person she once believed in the most.
Talk about, God in His mercy Oh, if he really does exist Why did he desert me In my hour of need I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally
It's funny... the main characters who didn't want to be alone the most ended up as the most alone.

pilita corrales
(originally posted in my “letters from canberra” blog on 10 june 2006—i was then a ph.d. scholar at the australian national university. photo with ms. pilita corrales taken on 27 november 2019 at grand hyatt manila. “letters from canberra” is also the working title of my unpublished autobiography on my growing up years in sampaloc, manila, during the 1970s-early 1980s)
from maestra isang tapales and jovita fuentes to ryan cayabyab and lea salonga, filipino musical artists have been winning worldwide acclaim as soloists, accompanists, composers, and arrangers. i grew up fascinated with filipino pop artists and their achievements in many international music festivals. but my fascination with these artists began with pilita corrales.
i skipped kindergarten and landed immediately in prep school at u.s.t. elementary school when pilita corrales bagged the best singer award during the 1st tokyo music festival (tmf) organized by tokyo’s popular music promotion association in 1972. pilita performed george canseco’s stirring ballad “my daughter.” she bested well-known musical artists like stig anderson (who later became the manager of abba), julio iglesias, paul williams and olivia newton-john. tmf’s succeeding roster of participants and guest artists has included the likes of paul anka, shirley bassey, kate bush, kim carnes, joe cocker, natalie cole, the commodores, rita coolidge, randy crawford, sammy davis jr., al green, israeli superstar ofra haza, jermaine jackson, jackson five, al jarreau, limahl (lead singer of the 1980s pop band kajagoogoo), barry manilow, gilbert o’ sullivan, the pointer sisters, lionel richie, diana ross, frank sinatra, sister sledge ("we are family"), donna summer, the three degrees ("when will i see you again"), vaya con dios (a top belgian band), dionne warwick, andy williams and stevie wonder. not to be confused with the equally prestigious world popular song festival (http://users.telenet.be/wpsf/Main_Menu.htm)(organized separately by the tokyo-based yamaha music foundation from 1970 to 1989), pilita’s victory at tmf was no mean feat.
immediately upon arrival in manila, pilita landed in newspapers and on television, where the local press began dubbing her as “asia’s queen of songs.” that’s how i got to know more about her. soon, pilita became a permanent fixture on ibc channel 13's "seeing stars with joe quirino." then japan's matsushita corporation, owners of national (now panasonic) electronic appliances, handpicked pilita to endorse quintrix state-of-the-art color t.v. and jetscycle refrigerators. right before going to bed late at night, i patiently waited for rpn channel 9 to air pilita's t.v. ad where she sang the first few bars of "kapantay ay langit" at eduardo's along roxas boulevard. pilita was then at the height of her popularity as the country's leading female vocalist.
these days, pilita is well-known on t.v. audiences as a comedy actress. she is “mamita” on gma channel 7’s comedy “lagot ka, isusumbong kita” opposite joey marquez, richard gomez, raymart santiago, and benjie paras. soon, she will be even more famous as the female judge, a la paula abdul, in abc channel 5’s philippine idol (http://www.philippineidol.com/). younger generations of filipinos are probably oblivious to pilita’s impressive feat as the first filipino winner of an international music festival. nobody seems to remember pilita's distinguished achievements as a recording, live performance, and t.v. artist.
nearly fifty years ago, pilita arrived in australia with a shipwrecked troupe of performers. initially, she was the assistant of magician and actor john calvert. calvert had earlier achieved popularity with his long-running magic show in hollywood with edgar bergen, gary cooper, cary grant, and danny kaye during world war II. calvert also appeared in a movie with clark gable. later, pilita and calvert formed a tandem that proved to be very popular at the legendary tivoli theatre ("the tiv") on bourke street. "the tiv" was the center of melbourne's glamour, magic, and live entertainment long before t.v., cinema, betamax, vhs, vcds, mobile phones, dvds, mp3s, ipods, blogs, and laptops took over. it was also the site of pilita's first international success.
as a leading female vocalist from 1958 to 1962, pilita achieved mainstream acceptance and popularity in australia way ahead of newton-john, pat carroll, helen reddy, patsy anne noble, debbie byrne, renee geyer, the moir sisters, colleen hewitt (who made a hit out of "day by day" from godspell), sister janet mead (who did a popular cover version of "the lord's prayer"), marcia hines, samantha sang (who scored a u.s. #1 hit in 1978 with barry and maurice gibb's "emotion" ), kate ceberano (who is actually filipino-hawaiian-australian), tina arena, kylie minogue and delta goodrem. the australian broadcasting corporation (abc) and melbourne's the age recognized pilita as the first woman ever to land on top of the australian pop charts in 1958 with "come closer to me."
pilita also performed with international artists like the beatles, bob hope, julie andrews, pat boone (“you light up my life” singer debbie boone’s father), and sammy davis jr. (at caesar’s palace in las vegas) while hosting prizewinning musical-varieties like “an evening with pilita,” “pilita and jackie, ” “ang bagong kampeon” and "tanghalan ng kampeon.” she popularized songs by filipino composers (“a million thanks to you,” “kapantay ay langit,” “ang pipit”) way ahead of many local artists. her renditions of tagalog classics by tito arevalo, george canseco, levi celerio, constancio de guzman, dominador santiago, leopoldo silos, restituto umali, and miguel velarde jr. under plaka pilipino and vicor helped pave the way for the mainstream (and not just token or marginal) acceptance of original pilipino music (opm) during the 1970s and the 1980s.
after pilita, filipino artists realized they could also win festival honors for the country. celeste legaspi won major prizes in world music festivals held in manila (1976, for philip monseratt’s “pusong nagmamahal”), tokyo (1976, also for “pusong nagmamahal”), and seoul (1981, for willy cruz’s “never ever say goodbye”). didith reyes bagged the gold prize during the 1977 tokyo music festival. leah navarro and the manila music machine bagged the bronze prize at tokyo in 1979. the philippines had been luckiest at the seoul popular music festival (1978-1983). winners of the annual metro manila popular music festival (1978-1985) were sent to compete at the sejong cultural center. except for lerma de la cruz (who did not win in 1983, despite her exceptional rendition of vehnee saturno's "ako'y ako"), filipinos won a slew of prizes in seoul: ryan cayabyab and hajji alejandro for “kay ganda ng ating musika” (grand prix, 1978); freddie aguilar for snaffu rigor's “bulag, pipi at bingi" (best performer, 1979); dero pedero and leah navarro for “isang mundo, isang awit” (bronze, 1980); ananias montano and something special for “babae ka” (bronze, 1981); and jun latonio, tillie moreno, eugene villaluz and louie reyes for “nothing i want more” (grand prix, 1982). in later years, jose mari chan, eugene villaluz and louie reyes, leo valdez, dulce, ivy violan, smokey mountain, regine velasquez, jaya, ryan cayabyab, gines tan, danny tan, vehnee saturno, and a few other artists would achieve similar honors in festivals held in canada, china, finland, hong kong, japan, malaysia, the philippines, and the united states during the 1980s and the early 1990s.
towards the 21st century, a shortage of interest and sponsors caused the demise of many music festivals. the few surviving ones today are mostly national or regional, as in the case of san remo (italy) and the annual eurovision contest. gma 7 tried to revive metro pop during the 1990s, but antonio barreiro passed away. no one could execute the vision and spirit of music festivals locally as he did.
gerry matias, one of pilita’s musical directors, is the father of my former student, gm matias. when i return to manila, i will probably ask gm to get me pilita's autograph. or i'll drop by pilita’s bar in greenhills and tell her how she fascinated me when i was growing up. one of these days, she ought to be proclaimed a national artist. even the city of melbourne has named a street after her in forest hill. and yet, she opted to sing more for her kababayans back home. i will never understand why pilita corrales should not receive the honor she deserves.

So, I have spent my day doing a lot of things inside my home/office and during the whole day, I had this #song in my head: I Hope You’ll Stay by Gilbert O’ Sullivan, from the album Back To Front. It became even louder in my mind tonight for I don’t know what reason, so finally I went on YouTube to listen to it again. I am not sure, but I’m wondering if this song is not comforting me because it reminds me of a time when I was a little girl alone in my bedroom, learning his lyrics on all of his songs, and beside my homework for school, nobody was asking me for anything more, I could spend my days drawing and listening to this charming kind of magical music which was making me think of fairy tales. For sure we were far from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath but I could love all of them. When I listen to this today, I realize the incredible quality of Gilbert O’ Sullivan’s melodies, arrangements, lyrics, how lovely and nice all this sounds, and very often it is a reflection of the artist himself. Wish the world was still like a fairy tale nowadays... #ihopeyoullstay #gilbertosullivan #backtofront #ledzeppelin #blacksabbath - By the way, I highly recommend that you check on all his songs, they are a must, even today. The quality is there. I still have many of his vinyl records that I got when they were released, a very long time ago. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Of471BCR9/?igshid=xyhovy7n032n

Recently I saw a local community theatre production of this old Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera called “H.M.S. Pinafore.” The show itself is almost 140 years old, so going into it, I didn’t have very high hopes. Honestly, I kind of expected it to suck.
But from the moment the curtain went up, I was enthralled. The entire story takes place on a boat, and the set went above and beyond to convey the feeling of being at sea, from the backdrop (painted ships and blue plastic as water) to the deck itself. The costumes were all incredibly detailed (gotta love those 19th century dresses and hats) and the cast was giving their all every moment. They executed the choreography flawlessly and all the chorus members were incredibly expressive, despite being mostly in the background. Honestly the overall attention to detail wowed me, and I can safely say that the performance was of a professional caliber.
But to me, the biggest surprise of all was that I actually liked the story. It was hilarious! I probably can’t do it justice here, but there was one song that made a pun based on the “cat ‘o’ nine tails,” which is essentially a whip, that was pretty great. So you’ve got wordplay. The show also poked fun at rich people and class status, which is always a plus. And of course, no comedy is complete without overdramatic lovers and a crazy plot twist at the end, so throw that in there.
Walking away at the end of the night, I was so grateful that I had decided to attend. But looking around, I noticed that at this SATURDAY NIGHT performance, the theatre was at about 30% capacity.
Which brings me to the real point of this post. As much as I enjoyed it, I’m not trying to persuade everyone to go see “HMS Pinafore.” But I would like to make the argument for taking a risk and exploring musicals and plays outside your comfort zone. I understand that old shows can be intimidating because they seem unrelatable and are sometimes hard to understand. But you never really know what you’ll like until you try it.
Also, I really want to encourage everyone in the theatre community to SUPPORT NONPROFIT LOCAL THEATRE. As the recent Great Comet debacle has reminded us, Broadway is for profit, which means at the end of the day, money is more important than art. But a lot of local theatres are nonprofit artists just doing their work out of their own passion and love for theatre, and they struggle to get by. Please please please, as much as you can, help them by going and seeing their shows.
I too am a poor college student with limited mobility (meaning I don’t have a drivers license), so I understand the struggle, but supporting local artists is a great place to spend any extra money you have, because it’s 1)good for them 2) good for you 3) good for our culture and the world! I highly believe in the inherent value of art, and theatre is my personal fav art form!
Tl;dr: There’s nothing wrong with liking popular musicals, but try to expand your horizons by seeing lesser known and/or older theatre shows. Also go see community theatre performances bc they are awesome and good for art!
Anyways this is just my one experience and I would love to hear about other people’s experience with community theatre!

Question Meme(s)
I was tagged by @fuzzyspork, so here are my answers. I just answered all the questions, I don’t know which questions belong to which of the two memes Fuzzy was doing.
Name: Honestly, I tend to think of myself more as Esme or as the childish name that my niece and nephew call me (at my request) than as my actual legal given name.
Nickname: My parents didn’t encourage nicknames. There is someone at work with the same name as me -- when people are talking about her to me and she’s not there, she is “Other [esme]” and I assume that when people are talking about me to her and I’m not there, I am “Other [esme]”, but I have no proof of that. If we are both there, then we are both “[esme] [wave of hand in the direction of the correct esme]
Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
Height: 5′ 4.5″
Orientation: Facing southeast just at the moment.
Ethnicity: Good ol’ fashioned American mixed breed here. Roughly 1/4 Polish, roughly 1/4 eastern Russian (with a reasonable chance of some east Asian thrown in there, like an awful lot of eastern Russians have), better than 1/4 but less than 1/2 German , 1/16 Scottish, assorted dribs and drabs of random European stock because nobody on that side thought the women‘s origins were worth tracking, 1/8 Danish (and more specifically 1/64 Danish royalty, albeit on the wrong side of the blanket). I used to call myself a “mutt,” but then a thirteen-year-old boy of my acquaintance told me that I shouldn’t put myself down like that and that “mixed breed” was a much nicer term.
Favorite Fruit: Pears? Or bananas? Maybe grapes? Depends on the day.
Favorite Season: Spring!
Favorite Book Series: The Queen’s Thief series by @meganwhalenturner. I have already preordered the new one, and I intend to take the release date (May 16, currently) off work to read it. I will eat nothing but pizza, because you can order that several days in advance, and I don’t have to stop reading to open the door, shove a handful of money at the delivery guy, and take the box. After I’ve read the new one, I will of course have to read it again immediately, and then I will have to reread the whole series in order including the new book for a third time. (I read ~800 words a minute and don’t plan on actually sleeping much in that set of 24 hours.)
Favorite Flower: In the wild: Honeysuckle. Cut and in my home: Roses. Cut and just available for me to look at: Mixed flowers.
Favorite Scent: Mint.
Favorite Color: For wearing on my person: red. For just about everything else: purple/blue/black/green, depending on the item and the day.
Favorite Animal: Cat
Coffee/Tea/Cocoa: Tea, unless I’ve just come in from sledding, and then cocoa, preferably with marshmallows.
Average Sleep Hours: Not enough.
Cat Person or Dog Person: Cat person
Favorite Fictional Character: Eugenides, Valancy Sterling (later Snaith), Eli Monpress, Chrestomanci, Death (Terry Pratchett version, although Neil Gaiman’s is okay too), and a whole passel of Andre Norton characters, generally in pairs.
Number Of Blankets You Sleep With: Currently two duvets in one cover, a wool blanket, and an afghan my mother made years and years ago.
Dream Trip: Sleeper car cross-country to Seattle. Day in Seattle seeing the undercity and the troll under the bridge and maybe the fish market. Sleeper train down the coast to San Jose. Day touring the Winchester Mystery House. First-class train to Los Angeles (two hours) and day or so visiting relatives. Sleeper train on the northerly route to Chicago. Day at the Museum of Science & Industry, especially the dollhouse. Sleep train home.
Blog Created: Yes, yes indeed I did create one (Not sure what this is asking)
Number Of Followers: 69, apparently
Time Right Now: 7:49 pm
Last Thing You Googled: How to spell “Eugenides” “1812 Overture to figure out how to spell “Tchaikovsky”
Favorite Music Artist: Either Gilbert & Sullivan or Edvard Grieg (”Hall of the Mountain King” is probably the most perfect piece of music ever) or Tchaikovsky (”1812 Overture”)
Song Stuck In My Head: Apocalyptica remix of “O Fortuna”
Last Movie I Watched: Florence Foster Jenkins (I cried)
Last TV Show I Watched: What’s My Line?
What I’m Wearing Now: Regular underwear, long underwear (it’s winter!), socks, jeans, shirt, and lucky necklace
The Kind Of Stuff I Post: Sims stuff and the occasional meme.
Why I Chose My URL: I didn’t -- Tumblr assigned it to me. I didn’t choose my LJ URL either.
Gender: Female
Hogwarts House: Not a clue
Pokemon Team: Not a clue
Lucky Number: 13, if it falls on a Friday (Saturday the 14th is always a real kick in the teeth, though). Otherwise anything even.
Dream Job: The one I have right now is actually pretty close.
Relationship Status: Single, and only ever asked on a second date twice.
Pets: Alas, none
Last Song You Listened To: Actually listened to instead of had on in the background? “In the Hall of the Mountain King”.
Favorite TV Show: Current: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Historical: What’s My Line?
First Fandom: The Sims 2
Pretty well everyone I’d tag seems to have already been tagged, but just in case: @annegirl13, @majestic-nessie

the “three songs” survey
1. three songs that come up when you put your phone on shuffle They aren’t on my phone. But pulling out the Zune...  Nena, “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime (extended version)”, Art of Noise “Once Upon A Lime”, Level 42 “Just For You”.
2. three last songs you listened to I don’t have titles, but they were on the classical music station. The radio text has said everything’s by Igor Stravinsky for the last two days.
3. three songs you were recently obsessed with EBN-OZN “AEIOU Sometimes Y”, finding all the remixes of Art Of Silence “West 4″, and the 12″ dub of Ray Parker Jr “Ghostbusters”.
4. three songs that you know thanks to your parents The Carpenters “Top Of The World”, ABBA “Super Trouper”, and... Anna Russell’s song about the boy with the onion mark from her “How To Write Your Own Gilbert & Sullivan Opera”.
5. three songs you wish you could forget (because listening to them hurts) Nothing actually hurts, however I cannot listen to Stone Roses “I Want To Be Adored”, I tear up singing along with Orchestral Manouevers In The Dark “Forever (Live And Die)”, I’m trying to reclaim Soulsavers “Lately”, and I’d really like to think less when Blue Swede “Hooked On A Feeling” comes on.
6. three songs you wish you could erase from history (because they’re terrible) That’s a long list due to rap, current pop music being horrible, and some reverbed/autotuned artists. Could we start with that overplayed song that says “no, no, no” and Gwen Stefani going “wooo, yeeee”?
7. three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved I can think of some Depeche Mode songs that grew on me -- none from the Spirit album though, thanks -- such as “Strangelove” and “Barrel Of A Gun” and “Soothe My Soul”.
8. three songs that remind you most of summer and vacation Gerry Rafferty “Baker Street”, Donny Iris “Ah! Leah”, and... okay, sure, Alice Cooper “School’s Out” but not really.
9. three songs that get you in the Christmas Mood Frank Sinatra “Mistletoe & Holly”, Andy Williams “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”, and Ivan Rebroff “Ave Maria”.
10. three favourite Halloween/spooky songs Eh, none.
11. three favourite songs from movie or TV series soundtrack The English version of Enya “Far And Away”, Love Spit Love’s cover of The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now?”, and... can we count TV ads? Because I really like the album version of Röyksopp “Remind Me” from the GEICO ad.
12. three favourite songs from video games Gyruss: JS Bach “Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565“; Super Mario Bros: Koji Kondo, “Underwater Theme”; The Sims: Depeche Mode, “Suffer Well (Simlish)”
13. three songs you want at your funeral Enya “Smaointe…“, Depeche Mode “Blasphemous Rumours”, and Naked Eyes “No Flowers Please”.
14. three songs you want at your wedding Elton John “Your Song”... actually, I don’t have a current answer for that.
15. three songs you want to dance with your love to Modest Mouse “Float On”, Robert Plant “Thru With The Two-Step”, and Dave Gahan’s cover of Roxy Music “Song For Europe”.
16. three favourite songs for sex Music distracts me and I need my concentration. But I will say a little quiet aetherial dreampop can be interesting... Mazzy Star “Fade Into You” and “All Your Sisters”, for instance, or something indeterminant from The Cranes.
17. three songs that remind you of your crush Anything by Modest Mouse, whiny violins playing chamber music on a cell phone speaker through pillows, and Giuffria “Call To The Heart”.
18. three songs that remind you of your best friend Prince “Mountains”, The Doors “The Soft Parade”, and Guns n’ Roses “Mr. Brownstone”. (And a fourth, Metallica “One”.)
19. three songs that are your guilty pleasure Bee Gees “Stayin’ Alive (Teddybears Mix)”, Patrick Hernandez “Born To Be Alive”, and the 12″ version of Leif Garrett “I Was Made For Dancing”.
20. three songs that remind you of the person who sends this one I don’t have any, I just bogarted this off a new follower’s Tumblr.
21. three songs of your childhood Doobie Brothers “Cold Black Water” and “China Grove”, and Beat Farmers “California Kid”. Note, I did not say I ever want to hear those two Doobies songs again, I’m saying you couldn’t turn on KATS 94.5 without hearing one of them at any hour for several years... so it’s a Yakima inside joke.
22. three songs you listen to when you’re sad Alan Parsons Project “Standing On Higher Ground”, Men Without Hats “O Sole Mio”, and Art of Silence “4:34 a.m.”
23. three songs that never fail to get you pumped up C&C Music Factory “Gonna Make You Sweat”, Fear Of Tigers’ remix of The Sound Of Arrows “Into The Clouds”, and the remastered Sweet “Action”. Honorable mentions to Abraxas Pool “Boom Ba Ya Ya” and BT with Tori Amos “Blue Skies” for getting my blood moving.
24. three favourite old songs Ram Jam “Black Betty”, Lulu “To Sir With Love”, and Frank & Nancy Sinatra “Something Stupid”.
25. three favourite songs of 2017 None.
26. three favourite non-English songs Nena “Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann“, Enya “Cursum Perficio“, and I admit it, O-Zone “Dragostea Din Tei”.
27. three songs that you sing while drunk I don’t sing when I’m drunk.
28. three best songs to get drunk or high to You have to be trippin’ balls to really appreciate the Grateful Dead (or play M-Network “Frogs & Flies”), and Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumper” has taken on a life of its own as a drinking song, but I don’t have any serious recommendations other than bastardizing the lyrics of Steve Winwood’s “Roll With It” when you are totally shitfaced to make the chorus “FUCK ME!”
29. three songs that influenced you most (some songs change or save lives) Soulsavers with Dave Gahan “Lately”, Pretty & Twisted “The Highs Are Too High”, and Depeche Mode “A Question Of Time”.
30. three songs you really want your followers to know (for reasons other than all those above) Zebra “Who’s Behind The Door?”, Abraxas Pool “Boom Ba Ya Ya”, and Alison Moyet “When I Was Your Girl” (that’s her daughter Caitlin as the younger version of Alf in the video).

Art F City: This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Skip Most Fairs, See The Real Hennessy Youngman
Jayson Musson
Plan comfortable shoes for the week: it’s another inundation of art fairs and satellite events.
Thankfully, Frieze and SPRING/BREAK’s new Brooklyn offshoot are the only big fairs we’re recommending by now, so fair fatigue shouldn’t be too much of a problem. But of course, the city is packed with art star openings, book launches, and more brunches than you can shake a croissant at. We’ve done you the favor of skimming only the best of the best events this week though, to save you from too much overload.
Highlights include Roxy Paine’s creepy interiors at Paul Kasmin Tuesday night, Martin Roth’s Twitter-fed lavender farm at the Austrian Cultural Forum on Wednesday, and Jon Rafman’s screening and book launch at Printed Matter on Thursday. If you’re not fair-pooped after Friday, check out Salon 94’s demon-wrestling solo show from Jayson Musson (of “Hennessy Youngman” fame) on Saturday and Columbia MFA candidates paying tribute to Walter Benjamin at the Jewish Museum on Sunday.
So much more below…

Roxy Paine: Farewell Transmission
The first time I saw a photo of Roxy Paine’s dystopian dioramas, I assumed they were room-sized installations. Her work has an uncanny realism, wherein institutional blandscapes are rendered with such precision that the only things missing are the real world’s ubiquitous logos. In this show, she’s taking over both of Paul Kasmin’s 10th Avenue galleries. In one piece, a bedroom appears to be under surveillance from a two-way mirror for some pseudo-scientific or institutionally voyeuristic end. In another, a group of mismatched chairs is arranged in a depressing room (complete with faux drop ceiling) and folding table with coffee. It looks like a 12 step program is about to begin, eerily devoid of participants. You’ll definitely want to attend, though, even if the viewing experience makes you feel a little icky and complicit in some sinister plot.
Skarstedt Chelsea
550 West 21st Street New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Eric Fischl: Late America
I know a lot of people who aren’t big fans of Eric Fischl, and a lot of people who are. I have personally never had a strong feeling about most of his work one way or another, until Jerry Saltz described the titular piece, “Late America,” of these new post-election paintings as such:
“I read the painting a dozen different ways, all of them bigger than just a story of a man in a weird pose by a swimming pool, a boy, and a couple of workers. I saw dozens of different American narratives unfold. All the figures are male, so this is a story of the wreck of masculinity, something bankrupt, buckling, sick, unconscious of everything around it. Especially in the naked man, who is totally somaticized, I see an empire ending in an infantile whimper, a country identified by the heroism and pain it is forgetting, turning inward, being consumed by itself, pampered, deluded, duped, marooned, and wishing for stronger others to make quick fixes and take dramatic actions, to show the self-confidence that they lack, and to make those they feared go away by turning them into objects of open hatred and discrimination. So that we can be great again. Or forget that we haven’t lived up to our own expectations.”
It really is a phenomenally evocative work, and I’m excited there’s apparently more where that came from. The mysterious dramas here play out around suburban swimming pools, and I’d much rather be seeing these than more paintings set in art fairs, especially this week.
Wed
Austrian Cultural Forum New York
11 East 52nd Street New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:30 PMWebsite
Martin Roth: Exhibition Opening, Book Launch & Artist Talk
For roughly two months, a subterranean forest will sprout in the basement galleries of the Austrian Cultural Forum. At the center of this installation, a lavender field will grow under artificial lights. These lights are regulated by the Twitter activity of opinion-shapers. All that angry online bickering will, through a complicated-sounding mechanism, translate to the cultivation of lavender, which has medicinal properties to relieve stress.
This is the latest outdoors-indoor project from Martin Roth, whose 2015 installation of parakeets, frogs, rubble, and water in Louis B James we covered.  At the Austrian Cultural Forum, Roth will be launching a new book and speaking about his work starting at 6, followed by a reception at 7.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Furman Street at Old Fulton Street Brooklyn, NY 6:30 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Anish Kapoor: Descension
It sounds like a satirical headline from The Onion, but Anish Kapoor is installing a swirling black vortex of doom in Brooklyn. The piece promises to be the next big selfie magnet of public art, so try to get there early. Tickets to the opening reception are $10, which is probably worth it to stare into a bottomless whirlpool of sinister black liquid on the East River waterfront.
Lever House
390 Park Avenue New York, NY 8:00 PM - 9:00 PMWebsite
MIDTOWN X FlucT
For fans of midcentury modern design, dance, and artists/designer hybrids such as the late Vito Acconci, this is going to be the week’s highlight.
Bushwick/Baltimore dance duo FlucT never disappoint. Here, they’ll be interacting with design objects and sculptures curated into the office spaces of the historic Lever House. The line-up of featured artists and designers is a doozy:
Vito Acconci, Anton Alvarez, Leonor Antunes, Thomas Barger, Jarrod Beck, Huma Bhabha, Carol Bove, Scott Burton, Nick Cave, Barbara Chase-Riboud, James Crosby, Alex Da Corte, Luca Dellaverson, Andile Dyalvane, Urs Fischer, Luis Flores, FlucT, Christina Forrer, Josep Grau-Garriga, Alex Hubbard, Dozie Kanu, Melike Kara, Jon Kessler, Rosy Keyser, Takuro Kuwata, Max Lamb, Kwangho Lee, Hannah Levy, Hanna Liden, Nate Lowman, Sarah Lucas, Carly Mark, Christine McHorse, Rodney McMillan, Marilyn Minter, Robert Morris, Senga Nengudi, Ruby Neri, Leon Niehues, Jo Nigoghossian, Jay Sae Jung Oh, Rick Owens, Virginia Overton, Anna-Bella Papp, Gaetano Pesce, Jessi Reaves, Max Hooper Schneider, Kenzi Shiokava, Lucien Smith, Keith Sonnier, Ryan Sullivan, Oscar Tuazon, Betty Woodman, Haegue Yang, Daisy Youngblood, Andrea Zittel, and Joe Zucker.

Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
Rei Kawakubo: Art of the In-Between famously opens to celebrities and other really rich people on Monday night’s gala. For everyone else, it remains one of the most hotly-anticipated exhibitions of the year. The famously mysterious Kawakubo has insisted that none of her critically-informed garments be accompanied by wall text. Instead, they’ll be grouped by opposing conceptual concerns in a futuristic landscape. Every image we’ve seen so far has been gorgeous. This one’s definitely going to be worth the lines.
Printed Matter
231 Eleventh Ave. New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Jon Rafman: Nine Eyes Screening and Book Launch
Here at AFC we’re quite proud of Jon Rafman’s “The Nine Eyes of Google Street View,” which to this day remains one of our most popular IMG MGMT commissions. That essay was the result of years of exploration via the Google Maps feature, catching glimpses of humanity’s weirdness and the built environment the world over. Fans of Rafman’s screen-grabbing post-photography will be happy to know he’s also applied his lens (so to speak) to video and a book on the subject. We can’t wait to get a copy!
Alessandro Berni Gallery | c/o ITALIAN GREEN DESIGN
530 West 25th Street New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
CITY BITES
For fans looking to pay their respect to Vito Acconci this week, we’re in luck his work is in a handful of shows!
We’re not entirely sure what this show is about (CITY BITES sounds like a food delivery startup app) but curator Asya Rotella has sure put together an impressive lineup:
Carla Accardi, Vito Acconci, Maurizio Cattelan, Jacopo Degl’Innocenti (JAPA), Jamie Martinez, Gilbert Salinas, Cecilia Yaghoubi, Fu Wenjun
Fri
Randall’s Island Park
New York, NY 11:00 AM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Frieze Art Fair
Frieze is one of New York’s biggest art fairs, and now that NADA has made the questionable switch to Armory Week,, is really the only big one worth seeing this week.
Yes, it’s worth seeing. Of course there’s always a proliferation of art fair schlock, but Frieze makes a better effort than most commercial fairs to have high-quality booths. Plus, it’s an excuse to ride a boat to Randalls Island. How can you pass that up?
It opens to the public on Friday, but it runs all weekend.
Washington Square Mews
New York, NY 4:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
PRESS FEST!
Basically one big small-press-centric block party thrown by the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses [CLMP].
In their words: “Buy books. Party with publishers. Celebrate independent and international literature.”
If you like reading, this one’s a big obvious “duh”.
Sean Kelly
475 Tenth Ave New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Kehinde Wiley: Trickster
Kehinde Wiley needs no introduction. His art-historically-influenced portraits of mostly young black men are now part of the cannon, and we pretty much know what to expect. These will be big and colorful and great. This series is inspired by Goya, so expect plenty of drama!
Sat
Black Ball Projects |
374 Bedford Ave. Brooklyn, NY 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Website
POSTER Closing & Zine Release Party
Black Ball Projects has been hosting programming in response to Trump since the election. This project invited the public to contribute their protest signs, t shirts, and other ephemera to an installation that feels like a demonstration march. These pieces are being archived in a zine, which will be distributed at the closing. That should be a cool piece of history to take home.
Salon 94 Freemans
1 Freeman Alley New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Jayson Musson: Demon All Day
Jayson Musson, arguably better known as his YouTube alter ego Hennessy Youngman, is presenting a surprisingly conventional new series this week. Returning to his drawing roots, Musson has been exorcising some anxieties through illustration-like demon gauche paintings. They’re actually a really nice balance of considered composition and gestural brushwork, recalling sumi ink calligraphy, Grecian pottery, and numerous other art historical references.
City Point
300 Flatbush Avenue Extension Brooklyn, NY 7:00 PM - 10:00 PMWebsite
SPRING/BREAK: BKLYN IMMERSIVE
We can’t get enough of the curator-driven SPRING/BREAK Art Show, always the highlight during Armory Week. So it’s good news for us that they’ve launched a satellite event during Frieze Week as well!
BRKLYN IMMERSIVE will launch large-scale installation and public works at megaproject City Point in Downtown Brooklyn. They’re in keeping with the theme of “Black Mirror”, which was a hit at their Times Square fair, so we’re excited to see what that looks like when artists have the space to work at a larger scale.
The fair kicks off with a reception Saturday night, and will be up for a week.
Sun
The Jewish Museum
1109 5th Ave at 92nd Street New York, NY 6:30 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
In Response: The Arcades
Walter Benjamin’s unfinished masterpiece “The Arcades Project” remains one of my personal favorite things to read. His unmatched capacity for observation has left quite an impression on the art world, and The Jewish Museum has a whole exhibition devoted to that legacy: The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin.
As part of the programming, Columbia University Visual Arts MFA candidates have been invited to produce works in dialogue with the show. These include performance, video, and installations, which will be presented in the Scheuer Auditorium.
Participating Artists: Ivan Forde, Davey Hawkins, Cary Hulbert, Daria Irincheeva, Emily Kloppenburg, Leah Moskowitz, Ana Rivera, Rocio Olivares, Emily Shaffer, Jacqueline Silberbush, Sara Stern

encumbrado rango economico,politico,social...,
cer como "the three ladies"
Aqui estan tan excelsas damas:Lillie P.Bliss-
arte Abby Aldrich Rockefeller.
gor Halport(1900-1970) Holger Cahill(1893-
1960) lsabel Carleton Wilde(1877-1951) y el
escultor modernista Elie Nadelman(1882-1946)
                 Edith Gregor Halpert
       Holger  Cahill
                  Elie Nadelman
corrio' Paris,London,Roma,Florencia,Venecia,
tas tradiciones culturales y regiones geograficas

genesis Americana.
-Siglo XXI ,el AARAFM se expande cubriendo
todas regiones geograficas y aumentando consi-
"if we assist the highest forms of education-
in whatever fields- we secure the widest influe
ce in enlarging the bondaries of human know-
ledge" John D.Rockefeller,Sr
Armory Park Avenue de New York City podran
litarios,costuras,edredones,juguetes...

Su significado ha sido brillantemente expuesto
por Ronald L.Hurst, de la Fundacion Carlisle
H.Humelsine Conservador Jefe y Vicepresiden-
inteligencias,talentos,expertos,creativos,profe-
