Extremely random thought but do you think that cringy fanfictions written by preteens who then grew up to be embarassed adults would have never existed in the Marukiverse, considering how that art student who was in a slump was forcibly pivoted to archery instead?
wow, goddamn. I guess you could take it either way, couldn't you? Maruki does seem to think that struggling against the odds isn't worth it, and that depression and discouragement are best treated by giving up.
I do tend to think that Maruki is able to tell what people truly want, to somehow divine it out of their heads, even before 12/24—just because all of the kids get something they really want, even when it's not necessarily obvious. Maruki makes some startling judgements there, but the PTs all seem to agree that they were genuine temptations.
So my reading would tend be that Yusuke's artist friend really did think he might have been happier as an archer, and really did believe there was no hope for him in art—but, just as the PTs all turn down their wishes that they desperately want, Yusuke's friend has chosen not to switch paths, and to stick with his painting despite his slump. Until Maruki happens to him, at any rate.
What I think is more likely is that people who want to write would still write. They just wouldn't ever feel discouraged, or down. They wouldn't go through that phase of realising all their work is cringe. And of course, because Maruki's reality has no pain or challenge or complexity, nobody would ever write anything worth reading.
Which brings me to....
deleted text chat
While I was checking the archery chat, I ran into this deleted chat all about conflicting wishes, and how the very thoughts in people's heads, their ability to feel negative emotions at all, will likely be erased. It's unsettling reading, and confirms a number of theories that go around about what life in Maruki's reality would really have been like, and how he'd likely handle conflicts.
It's SCRIPTCHAT_282, and since it didn't make it into the English localisation, it will have been cut in very early dev. Look out for Akechi chiming in when Ann talks about wishing to get rid of people they don't want around.
Do you guys remember New Year? Course we do. There’s no way we could forget that. My mom was there, right? And Haru’s dad was there too, right? Uh, yes. I suppose so... Did something happen? Futaba ちょっと考えてたんだ I was thinking. If we think about wanting dead people back, they come back to life, right? So does it work the other way around? Sumire 逆… The… other way around? If we wish for people to disappear, who we don’t want around… Is that what you mean? Futaba そ! Yeah! That’s quite an interesting thought. Ren, what do you make of it? I feel like disappearing myself. It’s changed my perspective. But then, what would happen if somebody else wished they were still alive? They’d die, and then reappear again, wouldn’t they..? Ryuji 忙しいな Busy day. You know, even thoughts such as these may die out in the end. You mean our own thoughts? Do you mean we just wouldn’t think such things any more? It does seem likely. I’m afraid thought itself will be erased. I see. So… so we won’t be able to feel bad things any more..? It’s kind of creepy, isn’t it? We’d get to live in peace, but… You always gotta think of the worst things, don’t you, Futaba? It’s because I get bored. Oh, there’s Sojiro! See ya! So this was all just to relieve her boredom? We should all turn back to our lessons, anyway. So I finally caught some sleep (I woke up at 4 am, 20 minutes after the announcement, and slept a bit more after my last post announcing his passing).
First of all, this is going to be my panel: "See ya later guys, when you die we'll meet again!"
Tumblr media
The hematoma that's mentioned in the statement announced in his passing implies a head injury (so perhaps he fell, perhaps something fell on his head, and the internal wound may have not be noticed)
The last artwork he did that was published was this new Sandland one to celebrate the upcoming series. It was revealed on March 4th, so after his passing. We don't know if it's the last artwork he did (he may have drawn this earlier and it was revealed later, who knows.
Tumblr media
I'd also like to share some other statements, in no particular order:
Toyotaro's:
Tumblr media
Masako Nozawa (Goku's VA) statement:
I am not in a position to comment."
(aka she was too shaken)
Nozawa update:
I don't want to believe. My mind is empty because I don't want to think about it. Still, every time we met, Toriyama-sensei said to me, "I'll take care of Goku for you, won't I?" When I remember your words, 'I will stay by Goku's side until my life is over,' I can keep my mind on it. Sensei, please watch over us from the sky. May you have a peaceful departure.
(Mayumi Tanaka, the voice of Krillin who was requested by Tori super early on will probably say something at some point too).
Oda (One Piece author) statement:
It is too early. The hole is too big. Sadness washes over me when I think that I will never see him again. I have admired him so much since I was a child, so I remember the day he called me by name for the first time. On the way home from the day you used the word "friend" for me and Kishimoto, I remember being overjoyed with Kishimoto. I also remember the last conversation we had. I was one of those who took the baton from the days when reading manga made you a fool, and he also created an era when both adults and children could enjoy reading manga. He showed us the dream that manga can go worldwide. It was like watching a hero going forward. For not only mangakas but also creators in various industries, the excitement and emotion of the time of Dragon Ball serialization must have taken root in their childhood. His existence is like a big tree. For the manga artists of our generation who stood on the same stage, Toriyama's works became more and more important to me as I got closer to the same stage. I even felt being scary. But I am just happy to see the aloof man himself again. Because we love him on a blood level. With respect and gratitude for the creative world he has left behind. I pray for his soulful rest in peace. May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.
And Kishimoto's statement (the autho of Naruto)
To be honest, I don’t know what to write or how to write it. But right now, I want to tell Mr. Toriyama the things I always wanted to ask him and my feelings. I grew up with Mr. Toriyama’s manga, Dr. Slump in elementary school and Dragon Ball in high school. It was natural for me to have Mr. Toriyama’s manga next to me as a part of my life. Even when I was feeling down, the weekly Dragon Ball always made me forget about it. It was a salvation for me, a country boy with nothing to do. That’s how much I enjoyed Dragon Ball! When I was a college student, Dragon Ball, which had been a part of my life for so long, suddenly ended. I was overwhelmed by a tremendous sense of loss and didn’t know what to look forward to. But at the same time, it was an opportunity for me to realize from the bottom of my heart the greatness of Mr. Toriyama, who created Dragon Ball. I want to create a work like Mr. Toriyama’s! I want to be like Mr. Toriyama! As I chased after Mr. Toriyama, the sense of loss gradually disappeared. Because it was fun to create manga. By chasing after Mr. Toriyama, I was able to find new joy. Mr. Toriyama was always my compass. He was my inspiration. I may be bothering Mr. Toriyama, but I am grateful to him without permission. To me, he was a savior and a god of manga. When I first met him, I was so nervous that I couldn’t say a word. But as I met him more and more at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize jury meeting, I was able to talk to him. I will never forget the time when I talked to him about how much fun Dragon Ball was, like a child with Oda-san, as Dragon Ball children, and how he smiled a little shyly. I just received the news of Mr. Toriyama’s death. I am overwhelmed by a tremendous sense of loss, even greater than when Dragon Ball ended… I don’t know how to deal with this hole in my heart yet. I can’t read my favorite Dragon Ball right now. I don’t even feel like I’m writing this text properly to Mr. Toriyama. Everyone in the world was still looking forward to Mr. Toriyama’s work. If one Dragon Ball wish really comes true… I’m sorry… It may be selfish, but I’m sad, Mr. Toriyama. Thank you, Mr. Akira Toriyama, for 45 years of wonderful work. And thank you very much for your hard work. To the bereaved family, I pray that you will find peace and comfort in the midst of your grief. I pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Mr. Akira Toriyama.
And finally one of Toriyama's close friends Masakazu Katsura (Video Girl AI author) also had this to say:
I feel drained and unmotivated. I don’t want to write a comment like this. But I’ll write something. Once I start writing, I’ll have so much to say that it will probably turn into a long text, but I’ll try to keep it as short as possible. I apologize for the rambling, as my thoughts are still not in order. Looking back, all I have are fond memories of the times we spent together – whether it was visiting your house, having you stay over at mine, or going out on trips. Every time we talked on the phone, we would laugh so hard that we would get tired. You were a funny person. You were perverted, cute, sharp-tongued, and humble. We collaborated on some manga projects, which were also a lot of fun. But 99% of the time, we never talked about manga. As a manga artist, the gap between the way we saw things and our level of skill was too great, and I never really felt your greatness. I know it now. But when I was with you, I never felt it at all. That’s just the kind of person you were. That’s why I still can’t think of you as anything other than a friend, even though you were a great manga artist. Last summer, before I had surgery, you heard about it somewhere and sent me an email. It was really rare for you to send an email, and it was so full of concern for my health. We’ve been friends for 40 years, but that might have been the first time I felt such kindness from you. I thought it was going to snow. You know, you usually only talk about jokes or nonsense. What the hell, you shouldn’t be worried about other people, right? I called you a little before that, and I was feeling sick all over, so I said, “I’ll probably go first, so have a farewell party for me, Toriyama! And make sure you give a speech, because it’ll make me look good!” But you didn’t keep your promise. I really regret not calling you after you emailed me. I just can’t believe that I can’t talk to you on the phone for hours anymore. There are so many things I want to talk to you about. There are so many things I want to say. Even if you don’t care about what I have to say, you can just zone out like you always do. I just want to talk to you again. The last thing you said to me was “OK” in response to my email asking you to contact me again. That’s just not good enough. I’m so sad.
And the Dragon Quest LEGEND, Yuji Horii, too...
I am still filled with disbelief at the sudden news of Mr. Toriyama’s passing. I have known Mr. Toriyama since I was a writer for Weekly Shonen Jump. At the recommendation of my editor, Torishima-san, I decided to ask him to draw the illustrations for the game Dragon Quest when we were launching it. For over 37 years since then, he has drawn countless charming characters, including character designs and monster designs. The history of Dragon Quest is one that has been intertwined with Mr. Toriyama’s character designs. Mr. Toriyama and the late Mr. Sugiyama were longtime collaborators on Dragon Quest. I can’t believe they’re gone… I can’t find the words to express my sorrow. This is truly, truly a tragedy.
Torishima, his "evil editor" (the one the Mashirito from Dr Slump is inspired by), also put out a statement:
"The last time we worked together was on the book we published last year, 'Dr. Mashirito's Strongest Manga Technique.' In that book, 'Torishima and Toriyama Back Then' was the last manga we made together. 45 years, thank you very much. Mr. Toriyama, you were the best manga artist I have ever known."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this is what he's talking about)
Jackie Chan statement:
"Akira Toriyama-sensei, thank you for creating so many classics, they will always be with the world, farewell 🙏"
French president Emmanuel Macron:
Tumblr media
the tweet reads "To Akira Toriyama and his millions of fans who grew up with him",
The authograph says "for Ma-ku-ro-n president" (to President Macron); the hand-drawn parts are the little Goku and the dragon balls surrounding him, alongside the autograph. It was drawn over a printed paper (as per custom when getting an autograph)
The date indicates it was given to him during the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Yabuki Kentaro (To Love Ru's author) (link to the tweet)
Tumblr media
Takao Koyama (screen writer for 90% of the episodes and the movies) says Toriyama was sick for over a year at this point. He himself is pretty badly sick as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiroki Takahashi (Makafushigi Adventure, first DB opening)
Tumblr media
Hironobu Kageyama (Chala Head Chala and everything else)
Tumblr media
"Singing 'CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA!' is the biggest medal in my life! The loss of the sun is too much to bear But the power of Toriyama-sensei's works Will continue to be a strong light And may it illuminate people all over the world. May you rest in peace."
(some more of the Editorial department of Jump can be found here, with a good browser extension you should be able to get the gist of it)
Feel free to reblog with your favorite manga panels, interviews, trivias, and let's pay a homage to his life and work, alright??

My Personal Weatherman Ep 1 Subtitle Corrections
So I've been analysing the way MPW uses language to showcase the dynamic between Segasaki and Yoh - something that I suspect is not quite coming through with the English subs - and decided to watch Ep 1-3 again, with Eng subs this time. I am now going to complain about some of the subtitle and translation choices and edit them way too literally because I'm nerdy like that.
Disclaimer: Everyone translates differently for different audiences. This is not meant to disrespect the official translation team in any way because they are subbing for a more general audience and have different pressures, so don't come at me or them for our different priorities. I'm talking to the particular group of viewers who like this show and/or like Japanese and want to go a step further in interacting with the characters. That said, I'm happy to discuss MY translation choices so please feel free to drop in about any line.
Under cut because this GOT REALLY LONG.
I'm translating directly from the Jp, so sometimes my subs differ only slightly - I will lean towards a more literal translation here because that will allow me to explain my language analysis better in a follow up post so some phrasing may be awkward. Big changes/missing info have been italicised and bolded. Explanations of nuances/connotations have been added where I feel they add to the understanding of the character/scene, and the relevant phrase is marked with * in my translation and the Jp.
Ep 1
Tumblr media
Original: I said, just keep drawing manga. I’ll take care of your food and lodging *expenses, so come to my place. And in return, you’ll do everything I say.
Mine: I said, *it's fine (for you) to continue (being a) manga (artist). I'll take care of the expenses for your *food, clothing and lodging so, come (live) at my place. And, in exchange for that, (you must) *listen to everything I say.
*This whole paragraph is extremely blunt and direct. Every sentence is worded as an order, and this last line especially - the word "listen" is used here to mean "obey" - so this line really translates to, "in exchange for that, (I want you) to obey my every word". The reason it's not been translated this way is that it sounds so strong it borders on corny in English. In Jp though, the connotation of "obey" comes across not in the words but in the extremely strong/direct delivery of the line (contrasted with the extremely nonchalent tone), so it sounds more shocking/overbearing than it does corny. The original translation here works very well actually.
Tumblr media
Technically Segasaki introduces himself here as 気象解説員 (weather forecaster) as opposed to 気象予報士 (meteorologist), but in the show's character bios, and when Man-san talks about him later, he's called a meteorologist anyway, so this difference is of absolutely no importance (I'm just anal like that). FYI, in Japan, all qualified meteorologists (who must pass a national exam) can be forecasters, but not all forecasters have this qualification.
Tumblr media
か*] Original: More rain tomorrow Mine: There'll be rain again tomorrow, huh? *Said with a falling tone, the "huh" here hints that Yoh is likely a little down/disappointed about the rain continuing, and lays the ground for his reaction later about the rainy season.
Tumblr media
Original: M: Why summon someone into your otaku pit and act like that? Y: No, it’s more like you actively intrude into my life M: You’re being noisy and complicated, you complicated otaku Y: Sorry for being complicated…
Mine: M: (You’re the one who) dragged me into this fandom, (so) what’s with that attitude? Y: No, on the contrary, I have the distinct impression that it was you, Man-san, who pretty much jumped right in of your own volition M: (You’re) babbling nonsense (you) troublesome otaku Y: Sorry for being troublesome
Tumblr media
Original: S: What do you want for dinner? Y: Stir-fried ginger
Mine: S: What's for dinner? Y: Sho-shogayaki
Shogayaki is a style of cooking meat, usually pork, where you stir fry the meat with ginger. Unless the type of meat is specified, it refers to Pork Stir Fried with Ginger, or Ginger Pork Stir Fry. Very common home cooked dish.
Tumblr media
[S: あ、そ] (A, so?) S: Oh, is that so?
"I see" is a totally ok translation too. "A, so" can mean "Oh I see" or "Oh is that right" or "Oh is that so" etcetc but it has the air of a really bored "Oh, really?/Sure/If you say so" This is why Yoh's reaction after this is "if you aren't interested then don't ask!". This is the first of many times that Segasaki will use this phrase, as we will see in the following episodes, so I'm highlighting it here for now.
Tumblr media
No translation issues here - but I just want to point out that it's reeaaally difficult to make tasteless shogayaki hahaha If you've had ginger stir fried in anything you'll know - it's not a meek herb at all. Canonically, Yoh is apparently a really bad cook. This will be pointed out again later, when he makes curry, because again, it's gotta be some kind of talent to make bland japanese curry; it's r*eeeeaally *easy. Anyway, the sauce that Segasaki asks for here is Soy Sauce, which is different from the sauce that he asks for later! Seems like a few people think they're the same thing (also pay attention to the sauce rack position here - Yoh'll will move it closer to himself by their next dinner hahaha)
Tumblr media
[Y: ちかいんだよ、いちいち*] Y: He (leans in) so close, every (damn) time*!
*Not sure if this comes across, but the word for "every time" here is usually associated with slight annoyance, but the way "close" is said here implies Yoh's a little bashful about it.
Tumblr media
Y: Rain...so much of it*
*This has the same feel as the "there'll be rain again tomorrow...huh" that we first saw earlier this episode. The ending particle "~na" bakes in a sigh and a sense of disappointment here (if you didn't notice the utter depression on Yoh's face lol)
Tumblr media
S: Food's not ready yet?
See, you don't notice it with the Eng translations because even the most basic Eng grammar will form a complete sentence. In Jp though, Segasaki is once again taking "man of a few words" to the extreme. He has taken out every single part of the sentence he possibly can whilst still keeping it grammatically complete. So this line is literally just "Food, not yet?". He's done this throughout the episode btw - it's why he comes across as so cold/distant.
Tumblr media
[Y: やっぱ わかんねえよな] Mine: As I thought, he doesn't understand...
Tumblr media
[Y: 結局 従ってしまう自分の従順さが憎い*] Original: I hate my obedience, always giving in Mine: In the end, the obedient part of me that always ends up following his orders - I hate* it
*the word used for "hate" here is "nikui" which is different from the word Yoh uses when he says he "hates (dai kirai)" Segasaki. "dai kirai" is simply the opposite of "dai suki" - to really like, so is more accurately "really dislike" than it is "hate" (even though it is frequently translated as such). "Nikui", which is much stronger word, bringing to mind the idea of a "strong rejection of/detest/disgust for" something.
Tumblr media
If you didn't already know, the word "embrace" aka "抱く" here is a euphemism for "to sleep with (somebody).
Tumblr media
Shoyu = Soy Sauce. Sauce = worcestershire sauce, unless you're in a tonkatsu shop. Then sauce = tonkatsu sauce (which is a slightly different variation). Don't look at me, I don't make the rules.
Tumblr media
(This is very long but I'm going to write the whole monologue here)
Original: Every time there’s a sunny forecast, he does it with me The word sunny feels out of place for such activity in a dark and damp room It’s as if it’s such a lewd word being forced into my mind Do you understand, how I feel when I hear that word from your mouth? You probably won’t understand or even think about it for your entire life You have no problem sleeping with someone you’re not even going out with
Mine: (He) embraces (me) every time the forecast is sunny A word like “sunny” … (brings up) a completely different image from that damp, humid activity taking place in the dark And yet (to me) it seems like a lewd, obscene word, searing (the image of) itself into my brain Do you understand? How exactly I feel when I hear the forecast from your mouth? You probably don't understand, do you? Probably won't ever think about it your entire life, right? Because you're able to do this with me, (someone)who isn't even your lover, without any issues at all
Tumblr media
This line was ad-libbed btw, if you didn't already know (link leads to Kouhei's 16th Aug IG livestream, and his explanation starts around 07:20 mark) They've talked about this a few times on both their IG lives, and Kouhei seems to get prouder about it each time hahaha. In the linked IG, Kouhei said:
(reading a fan comment) "More" was an ad-lib?? I'm gonna die
Kouhei: Yea it was…ah that was…um, Mashiko-kun… Acchan (his nickname for Atsuki) gave me a really good expression so…somehow, (by the time) I realised (what I had done), yes, (by the time) I realised it,I had said it. Well probably saying "by the time I realised it" is weird but… yes. By the time I realised it... "even more"…(I'd wanted him) to open his mouth more so. Yes. That's all.
Tumblr media
[S: そこそこ高給取りになる予定*だから] Original: I'm planning to *become a high earner Mine: It's likely* that I'm gonna be drawing a pretty decent salary so...
*The exact wording here is actually "(it has been) planned that (I will) become (someone) drawing a pretty decent salary so" - the way this is phrased indicates that this conversation probably happened in Segasaki's last year of university, probably right before he graduated when he already had a job lined up for himself. In Japan, your final year of university is spent interning at companies and if they like you, you'll stay on as a salaried worker, so most graduates will have something lined up before they officially leave university.
Tumblr media
[Y: 流されるな] Y: Don't get swept away (by this) This phrase is usually used to warn people not to let themselves be swept away/caught up by the latest trends/public perception/societal expectations/their own emotions/panic etc Here, together with his insistence that he's just Segasaki's slave and so obeying him is a natural consequence, and so is sleeping with him (as opposed to Yoh doing it because he likes/wants to) - Yoh is basically telling himself "don't get swept away" by the situation/his feelings because their relationship doesn't mean anything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Original: So, it won't be happening, for a while huh? *slaps face* I'm fine without it for a while, right?
Mine: So then... there won't be... for a while, huh... *slaps face* (It should be) "I don't have to do it for a while!"
Again, you can see, Yoh's literally spent this entire episode trying to convince himself that he's not actually in love with Segasaki, and everything he does for Segasaki, be it listening to him, or sleeping with him etc, he does simply because he is fulfilling his end of the bargain as "a slave".
OMFG I FINISHED THAT WAS TOO DAMN LONG.
I will finish Ep 2 & 3 before I do the language analysis post. But first... I need a break....

Kishimoto interview and staff commentary The Last Booklet December 2014
Translation from Google Translate, QuillBot and DeePL

"NARUTO" is a work that has helped me grow in many ways, and I feel like it is like my own child.
「ROAD TO NINJA -NARUTO THE MOVIE-」 (12)
Masashi Kishimoto Interview (Original work, character design, story general supervision) Born November 8, 1974 in Okayama Prefecture. Debuted as a manga artist in 1996. In 1999, he began serializing "NARUTO" in Weekly Shonen Jump, which gained worldwide popularity. The series ended after 15 years with the 50th issue in 2014. For "ROAD TO NINJA -NARUTO THE MOVIE-" (12), he was responsible for the original work, planning, story, and character design.
Q: I was surprised by the story this time depicting the romance between Naruto and Hinata.
Kishimoto: For me, it was decided that Naruto would end up with Hinata a little while after his childhood arc in "Naruto" ended and he entered his adolescence arc. But I don't really have any emotional attachment to the love story between the two of them (laughs), and I didn't intend to write such story.
However, for the end of the manga, I wanted it to feel like returning to the first chapter by having Naruto have a child who is a mischievous boy like him, and his graffiti on Naruto's Hokage rock.
So, it was an idea that I didn't initially have, but when we were making this movie, people from Pierrot and the screenwriter, Mr. Kyōzuka (Maru), suggested, "How about depicting that in this movie?" and that's how it came to be. The reason I set the story two years after the original is because I insisted that if it was going to be a love story, the two characters had to be over 18 years old (laughs).
Q: Why did you decide that Naruto and Hinata would get together?
Kishimoto: Hinata is the only one who has seen Naruto working hard from the beginning and has always supported him. She knows that Naruto is trying his best even though things are not going well and that it is cool that he never gives up.
Sakura also realizes this halfway, but I thought it would be pitiful if Hinata, who had been watching from the beginning, is not rewarded (laughs).
Q: The red scarf was used in a striking way.
Kishimoto: The scarf serves as a metaphor in this movie, symbolizing love. It was used for that purpose. Because of this scarf, the final line was decided.
Q: When you were drawing the character designs for Naruto, who is now 19 years old, what did you do?
Kishimoto: I wanted to draw Naruto in a cool way. I've always drawn Naruto with a rough slightly down-to-earth and casual carefree feel, so he inevitably has a mischievous image in terms of his lines. I wanted to bring out something like a boy who has calmed down a bit from that mischievousness. Since men are considered grown-up after experiencing love, in my mind, the current Naruto has an adult image (laughs).
Q: What is your favorite scene in this film?
Kishimoto: It's the part where Naruto confesses his feelings and gets rejected (laughs). "I've given Naruto a test," "Don't get too cocky," "Do your best, Naruto." I like that part (laughs). I also like the scene where Sakura and Naruto realize that they are not interested in each other and decide to part ways, and where Sakura speaks to Naruto on behalf of Hinata's feelings.
Tumblr media
Q: What does "NARUTO" mean to you, Kishimoto-sensei?
Kishimoto: It's a work that has helped me grow in many ways, and I feel like it's my own child... It's difficult. If the readers don't read it and say, "It's interesting," it wouldn't have continued, so I really think it's amazing that it has lasted for 15 years.
Q: In "NARUTO," each character has their own struggles.
Kishimoto: Everyone has things that don't go well, and we all live with those things. Since there aren't many people whose lives are going perfectly, so I thought that if I included things that aren't going well, someone might empathize with it, and that's how I portrayed it.
Q: The power of "never giving up" and "believing" depicted in "NARUTO" also leaves a strong impression.
Kishimoto: I really think so. I also wanted to become a manga artist and I did. I might not have been as desperate as Naruto, but I think the feeling of "not giving up" is really important. And then there's "compatibility." Watching Naruto, I feel that compatibility is the most important thing (laughs).
Q: Finally, please give a message to the fans of "NARUTO".
Kishimoto: This is the first time I've depicted a love story in "NARUTO", so I think it will bring out a Naruto that has never been seen before. This movie is connected to the next work I'm doing, so please be sure to watch it. And I hope you'll look forward to what comes after that.

I hope this work will remain in the back of your mind as a memory forever.
Tsuneo Kobayashi (Director)
During our first meeting with Kishimoto-sensei, he requested that this film be centered around Naruto, not a guest character. We then considered what was missing from Naruto and came up with the idea of romantic love. We decided to make Naruto's final film a romantic movie, not an action movie.
First, Nono gave me the idea for the scarf, which I really liked. From there, I wondered if I could create a story with the scarf as the main item, and I came up with the image of Naruto and Hinata running hand in hand, wearing red scarves, in a space where balls of light projecting their memories are floating. The "memories" of the two up until now are scenes that will also be memorable for Naruto fans, and I thought it would be a wonderful scene if all those memories flashed back like a slideshow. I immediately drew an image board and named it "Remembering this world." I wondered what kind of episodes I should include to connect to this scene, and worked backwards to come up with the story of this work.
The visuals have been completely revamped from previous theatrical works. I made many requests to character designers Nishio and Suzuki, such as making them taller, which caused them a lot of trouble.
We also used new colors. Hinata's residence is an important setting that appears at the beginning, so we used Hinata's residence in the original work as a reference, scouted old family homes, and recreated the setting. The scene where Hinata and Hanabi talk has beautiful art, and the colors of the lights create an atmosphere of "praise," which I like. For the scene where Naruto confesses his feelings to Hinata, we used a color scheme reminiscent of a Van Gogh painting, with gold shining against a blue spring.
The scene where Naruto realizes Hinata's feelings in a dream was like solving a puzzle, as it mixed up the timelines of past episodes randomly. I thought of various ways to piece together the episodes until the present Naruto sees the paper where Hinata wrote his name during their academy days.
Although it may be hard to imagine in this movie, originally Toneri was created based on a younger version of Johnny Depp from "Edward Scissorhands." He is a character who has lived alone on the moon since he was a child and is therefore unable to understand the feelings of others, which is different from Naruto.
Mr. Kishimoto checked the script. I am grateful that he kindly gave me various advice despite his busy schedule with the serialization. He also wrote important lines such as "It takes time to knit a scarf."
As a side note, I made sure to show Hinata on the side in the key shots. This is a homage to Hitchcock's “Vertigo” and Nobuhiko Obayashi's “Sabishinbo,” in which the heroine's body is shown in a striking manner.
This is the final Naruto movie, so we created it with the hope that it would allow you to revisit "Naruto's memories" and become a new "memory" for everyone. We hope this work will remain as a "memory" in the corners of your hearts forever.

I wanted to depict Naruto, with a love deviation score of 30, hitting rock bottom and then rising up... aiming to become a mature man.
Maruo Keizuka (Screenplay)
The Naruto I wanted to portray this time is 19 years old and close to being a complete ninja, but when it comes to love, he is in his 30s, has hit rock bottom, and is trying to climb back up… to become a grown man.
Toneri who appears before Naruto has two roles. First, he is a strong and hateful villain. The second role is that of a love triangle between Naruto and Hinata. Naruto's love for Hinata is ignited by the appearance of his handsome and snarky rival. Toneri has lived alone since childhood and has only his puppet around him. He has never had the opportunity to learn about human relationships, and has grown up to be a lackadaisical character.
The appeal of Hinata, whom Toneri proposes to, lies not just in her admiration for Naruto, but in her strong will to set Naruto as her goal and strive for self-improvement. That's why Hinata rejected Naruto's confession. It was a "mature decision" made after considering various factors from a higher perspective, rather than clinging to the easy happiness in front of her. Both Naruto and Hinata have grown... they truly are the best couple!
This work is packed with highlights such as "battles" and "confession scenes," but I believe the key to the script structure lies in the Earth scene the night before they enter the competition. Naruto has hit rock bottom... he's a Naruto we've never seen before, unable to work with his usual determination. From that low point, he rises up with the help of his friends, and as he watches the flames of the bonfire, don't miss that moment when he "grows tremendously"!
Tumblr media
I don't think there's ever been a battle on the moon before, so I feel like it makes for a very fresh scene.
Tetsuya Nishio (Character design and general animation director)
When I first saw the storyboards for this year's movie I thought that the everyday scenes, such as Hinata's clothing and the atmosphere of the village of Konoha, were well thought out, and that they were different from previous movie versions. When it came to designing the characters, I started by having a long discussion with the main staff about how to express the atmosphere of growth over the two years. When actually working on the characters, I tried to create an atmosphere that would realize the order from Director Kobayashi (Tsuneo) to aim for a slightly more mature and calm performance.
We tried to make Naruto the tallest compared to his companions to give him a different look. How did you find it?
Also, this time I had the opportunity to take on the role of chief animation director for the first time. Although it was a bit of a trial-and-error process, the animators were so excellent that I felt I could focus on checking the characters' faces.
Regarding Naruto, I entrusted the action and battle scenes to the experts in that field, while I focused on expressing the subtle nuances of the characters' psychology. I hoped that Hinata would be a heroine who could be appreciated by the audience.
I don't think there's ever been a battle on the moon before, so I feel like it's a very fresh scene.
Up until now, I've mostly been involved in design work, and haven't been able to be involved much in full-length animation as I would have liked, so I approached this project with the intention of catching up after a break. The schedule was very tight, but the team came together as one and managed to complete it. I hope you can feel that passion.
Naruto's confession in the middle and Naruto and Hinata in the end were embarrassing to watch and I couldn't help but grin.
Hirofumi Buki (Character Design, General Director)
When I was in charge of animation supervision for the TV series, I let the momentum take over and created a style that was easy to draw. This time, however, I was not only in charge of character design, but also supervised all the animation, and since I was working with Mr. Nishio, I put more effort into character unification than usual.
The hardest part of the work was done by the animation directors and staff, so I was able to concentrate on adjusting the balance of the picture patterns. The fact that it became such a big production was due to the staff's ability to concentrate on their work. I feel that it is truly amazing.
My goal with this film was to portray a more mature Naruto who has grown up and become a little more composed. For those who have watched the original and the TV series, I hope you can experience the feeling of being like Iruka, watching over a grown-up Naruto. I also drew Naruto from Iruka's perspective. I consciously tried to depict Hinata as soft and gentle, and initially thought Toneri, who is Naruto's counterpart, would be in a position similar to Sasuke's, but when I read the script, he was more neutral than I had expected so I tried not to ruin the evocative atmosphere of the character. I find that I have to pay more attention to handsome male characters than to beautiful female characters.
Watching the completed film, Naruto's confession in the middle and Naruto and Hinata at the end made me grin with embarrassment. This film is a major milestone in the story leading up to the final chapter of the original work. I think it is a fitting end to the great “NARUTO” series. I hope it will be a work that will remain in everyone's hearts.
Tumblr media
I think this film is more about Hinata than it is about Naruto. I want to say, "I'm glad your feelings got through, Hinata. Congratulations."
Ebina Yasunori (Sound Director)
Director Kobayashi (Tsuneo) ordered us to "strengthen the impression of a love story," so we focused on creating the "sound" to ensure a pleasant balance between the love story and the battles. During the process, we thought about which sounds we wanted to create, which sounds we needed to eliminate, and especially how to convey the film's impact. The solution was to just try it out! If it didn't work, we would try another method. It was a continuous cycle.
When it comes to talking about music, this time it's "THE LAST," so we're using the music from the first season. When you listen to this song, you'll think, "It's NARUTO!" We used a song that evokes that feeling. This work is the culmination of the 10th movie. And by playing the songs from the first season as a way to conclude the story of Uzumaki Naruto, I wanted to send him off in my own way.The rest are all original songs by Mr. Koji Takahashi for the movie.
"NARUTO" is a work that is popular worldwide, and I think the worldview of the music is one of the factors that has led to its popularity. One of the highlights of this film, the scene where Naruto confesses his feelings to Hinata, was expressed through music. It also shows Naruto's weakness, which we have never seen before. It shows that there is no such thing as a perfect person. I think this film is more about Hinata than it is about Naruto. I want to say, "I'm glad your feelings got through, Hinata. Congratulations." And I would be happy if the audience could empathize with their love story.
I wanted to portray neither a child's love nor an adult's love, but rather to cherish the instability that is unique to that age.
Chiharu Kamio (recorded audio)
This time, I wanted to cherish the instability that is unique to this age group, not a child's love or an adult's love. Since the story takes place after the original work, I had a strong desire to convey Kishimoto-sensei's thoughts to the audience. I am grateful that Director Kobayashi (Tsuneo) valued the existence of the anime series and paid attention to even the smallest details, such as not using certain phrases for certain characters.
With sound director Ebina-san, it's like we're in perfect harmony. If I give him something I think is good, he will turn it into the best possible result, so I feel a sense of trust and reassurance working together with him.
During the recording, I was careful not to make the characters too old, even though they were a little more mature, but when I got there, the actors had properly created the characters with that in mind, so I didn't have to do anything (laughs). I think we were able to do it in a good atmosphere without any weird pressure just because it was a movie version. It was all thanks to Director Kobayashi's emphasis on "the same as always." Director Kobayashi had already created a character for Toneri, so I was careful to stick to that as much as possible.
The scene I like is after the end credits! It's nice to be happy! The charm of "NARUTO" lies in the fact that it doesn't have absolute good and evil. Not all the ally characters are entirely right, and not all the villain characters are entirely evil. It's really realistic, isn't it?I'm also one of the fans!
Here's Part 2 of The Last Booklet

Would you also consider looking over beika tweets for any new insights or maybe things the translation looks over?
[edit: made an easier-to-read version of my edits here]
ok this started getting MUCH longer than i expected so i'll put everything but the first one under the cut.
[...]and then after a little while, he told me that he had debuted with a band[...]
When I first read this and checked the JP text it seemed right but I’d also been looking for as many JP reactions to the booklet as I could possibly find and not a single one brought up anything akin to that… so checking the specific phrasing in the JP again
The literal information being communicated being “band debut-did”, ending with a quoting particle (って) and “to say” (いう). “って言う” being a way of directly quoting a statement... when written in using the 言 kanji. When spelled only in hiragana (っていう), it can gain an alternate meaning of quoting hearsay (explained here, using the more formal と form). So with this definition, it’d be more like
[...]and then some time later, I heard about how he’d debuted with a band[...]
There’s a part of me that wondered if it’s supposed to be ambiguous, but there’s the fact I haven’t seen a single native speaker read it like that, and how it seems you only use the 言 for something Actually Said, and the fuller tweet in context:
IS used for the “I’m going to Inkopolis” statement, which makes that seem like a direct quote, contrasting with the “[the band debut]” being something only heard about...I think.
Well, people often say it's a homage to their song, but any of you guys would be able to make a song that's just as cool. I mean our song is this one 300 times better, right? Just wanted to make it clear that we're not trying to pay homage to it or anything like that.
→ I get a lot of people thinking it’s an homage, but just for the record, I was only trying to express, like “If it’s you lots’ “music” we’re talking about, then obviously we could make it SO much cooler, y’know. I mean like, our version is 300 times better, right?”. That’s all. It wasn’t meant as a damn homage.
Okay I assume the “あんたらの曲なら” is what got interpreted as “any of you guys would be able to[...]” but I absolutely think it’s “snidely referring to the original song in a way that implies it has much room for improvement”. Also wanted to emphasize the “じゃねーから” at the end.
I think the Inkopolis scene is too pretentious, but Bottom Feeders are pretty cool even though it's been a while since I've listened to them.
→ I think the Inkopolis scene has become way too pretentious. However, I know they’re kinda old news now, but those Bottom Feeder guys are pretty cool.
The JP had the interesting specification of that “pretentious” comment being made about the Inkopolis of now (今のハイカラ). Also, the ちょっと(a bit) 昔 comment was very much directed at Bottom Feeders, which on the JP side was very much seen as an audacious way to refer to presumably still-active artists. (...and that immediately being followed with courting a collab with someone of Finn’s temperament, the response was mostly along the lines of “oh you’re gonna get your ass whooped for that.”)
I'd like to play songs for everyone. No matter if they're from the Splatlands or Inkopolis, I want to create really fresh tunes that make people feel at home in this era of chaos.
→I want to play along with the rest of C-Side so you all can hear it. This truly pure sound that'll reverberate throughout this era of chaos, no matter whether it's the Splatlands or Inkopolis.
pure sound(?).
Fun JP-specific quirks that may give insights:
1) The overall speech patterns are very informal/colloquial (even more so while drunk), except for the “Now or Never is a C-Side original” statement which suddenly ends with the formal sentence ender です/desu.
Now or NeverはC-Sideのオリジナルです。
2) I said in an earlier post that Beika uses ore in kanji which is true but specifically during the drunk-tweeting they use it in hiragana for it instead (おれ同中だから)... which doesn’t seem intentional on their part on both a consistency level and hiragana-ore being this kinda paradoxical thing where softness of using hiragana clashes with the tougher image of ore. So what I think happened is that they drunkenly didn’t bother/forgot to hit the input that turns it into kanji. Very specific I know.
3) The word they use to collectively refer to Squid Squad is 連中(renchuu) which is a very fun word where the connotations drastically change depending on who you’re using it for (very derogatory here).
4) I get why this didn’t get TL’d because both the dialogue and song name being the same syllabary lessens the impact, but it’s very funny to be so smug about typing out the whole song name after not remembering (or pretending not to) their band name multiple times…
…while also forgetting to close the bracket.
So, you’re probably wondering why we covered that Splattack (did I get it in one? LMAO song of theirs.
(also you forgot the exclamation mark so no you didn’t)
5) Definitely a case of “this works more naturally in JP”:
Oh, their music? Well, I guess it's not as bad as it used to be.
The ? in the JP doesn’t explicitly end the sentence in the JP は前よりマシ) so it could also be read with the connotation of:
Oh, well, I guess their music(?) isn’t as bad as it used to be.
Whatever That Means. Also the TL of it is good I just wanted to mention the “compliment” used is マシ, which has the implication of the less bad out of two undesirable options lol.

hiiii, I have a question :3 !!! do you know of any interviews or lists where Atsushi talks about his music taste?? this might be too specific to ask I'm sorry I'm just curious LMAO
hello! yes! atsushi did a radio program at the end of 2022 where he played some of his favorite songs, here is a spotify list with all of them: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3DXxI2e5nYy8A6pS2Su574?si=SGy6r4n1Q4em72wiTxAiww&pi=e-dz__9VSaSwms
also, in some magazines they ask the members about their favorite bands or artists and atsushi usually mentions the same bands (bauhaus (+peter murphy), david bowie, siouxsie, love and rockets, yamamoto linda, clan of xymox, bryan ferry, masami tsuchiya…) a lot of goth rock as you can see 😂 we have so much in common 😍
here is a playlist with some of his favorite bands he’s mentioned in interviews! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2RRXjxRHB3ORjBGBM3b0gF?si=73R-btD5RluxQRzxYjBVPQ&pi=e-M9Dt4kCHQzu7
