director's commentary on turn our golden faces into the sun, the karaiti au :)
yesssss thank you for letting me yap about this! Neglected Rich Kid Gideon... I have Thoughts about this!
turn our golden faces into the sun (The Locked Tomb, Gideon/Harrow; HtN era canon divergence AU)
After Canaan House and Cytherea's death, Harrow wakes up on the Erebos as a newly-made Lyctor. She meets God. Then she meets God's daughter.
This was written for the @tlt-holiday-exchange two years ago — (I'm tagging the account because GUESS WHAT? singups are currently ongoing! go sign up!) and I had a wealth of prompts to choose from. Newly minted Lyctor Harrow & Raised by John Gideon was the one I went with.
I think a lot about how a Gideon raised by John would be like, and my strongest headcanon is that John would be like... there but not really. Gideon was raised on the day-to-day by the crew of the Erebos who treat her like she's necromantic Jesus. (I think John actually kept a pretty close eye on her but he wants to be the cool dad! He can't be the cool dad if he disciplines her! Anyway. It's a mess.) Point is! NecroJesus Gideon is THE ONLY person who's happy to see teenager Lyctors. Finally somebody she can hang out with for real! She's the only person having fun on that whole ship.
On the other hand: a Harrow who grew up without Gideon. She was THE only girl on the Ninth House, for real. She's even more dutiful than canon Harrow; she never opened the Tomb; her parents are still around. I think she's possibly more of a soppy wet mess than canon Harrow, and on top of that she just had to kill Ortus. She does't have a fragment of a dead planet in her head but she's absolutely going unhinged with the new sensorial abilities of a baby Lyctor. Everything SUCKS for her. And in the middle of this she sees this swagger teenager who's just like, "Hello I'm God's specialest little girl but he's kind of lame isn't he?" and she's about to develop the universe's biggest crush and she doesn't know it yet.
Fic title was from Forever Young by Alphaville, which is about, uhm, militarism! Cold War era euro synth-pop. There's a bit of trivia here that is the reason why I picked this line as the title and I'll never get a chance to tell anyone if not for this meme. The third verse was originally "Can you imagine how we won the war? / Little fascist lady she loves you so". The record label made the band change it into "Can you imagine when this race is won / Turn our golden faces into the sun". I thought this useless trivia really fit the vibe of the whole AU, and it amuses me greatly even though I'm the only person who got it. UNTIL NOW. MWAH.
All in all, I think this fic pretty cute despite all the Horrors just beneath the surface, and I think probably one of my softest fics in this fandom. Thank you for giving me a chance to revisit it <3
[fanfic writers director’s cut meme!]

I need an adaption of Gawain and the Green knight which is literally just him sitting at the lord's table and having to listen in detail as the lord describes his hunts. Everything else in the story should be a footnote by comparison - it needs to become a really long and elaborate retelling of the lord's hunts and the twist at the end? The green Knights challenge was just him finding an excuse to get somebody captive for long enough to tell his goofy little hunting stories.
"Realistic take on arthurian legend" uhhhh no thank you. I would like my arthurian legend to be full of whimsy and unserious gags. Stop giving us that zero lighting game of thrones-esque gritty nonsense and give us more arthurian legend in all their extravagant colours and silly quests!!!
#Tbf that's how I felt reading it#Like some guy just wanted to talk about hunting techniques#But like#Make it arthruian so people would read#Some poor medieval guy just wanting to info dump about his special interest#gawain and the green knight

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
This book was recommended to me by a lot of people whose taste I trust, and by happenstance it was the pick for my book club at work. So I was eager to read it, but I also knew this book was fairly divisive: a lot of people Are Obsessed with this book and just as many people hated it. To cut to the chase, I think "hate" is a harsh word, but I think I'm in the camp that didn't love it. Spoilery thoughts under the cut:
First there was a lot that I liked about it, and I would actually say I liked the first half more than the second half. When we're dealing with Bree's grieving process over her mother's death, the book is compellingly written and you can almost feel After-Bree simmering beneath the surface. The Root/Bloodcraft magic system was also both a fascinating example of world-building with specifically how the trauma of institutionalized slavery would have impacted magic users of that craft.
And then of course there was the irresistible premise, which is also what drew me and probably a lot of other Arthruian legend fans to pick up the book: a black girl in the South gets drawn into a secret society of sorcerer-warriors reincarnated as the spirits of the Knight of the Round Table to fight an ancient evil magic? Amazing. Ironically, by the end of the book, I felt the premise ended up being the biggest hamper on the story. The After-Bree storyline is resolved around the middle when Bree discovers the truth behind her mother's death and the story then gets mired down in the try-outs in what tends to be the filler story arcs of a typical shounen anime. I was much more interested in how Rootcraft magic worked than the Order, and was frustrated that we learn precious little about it after its introduction and spend the bulk of exposition on the Order and the Lines, which are honestly kind of self explanatory so the big build up to the conspiracy felt obvious. And maybe this was just a nit by the point I got through the bulk of the novel, but I felt like it was hard for me to suspend my disbelief enough to believe that all of the Arthurian knights decided to emigrate to the Southern US. Like, really? None of England's legendary nobles were landed enough in Europe that all of them wanted to try the New World? And specifically the South? Okaaaaay. I know that Deonn is planning on making this a series, so why didn't she have Bree, who was grieving and wanting to get away, go to England to study-abroad to encounter the Order and get then it would make sense to focus on their Arthurian history? Then the next book could be her coming home to learn about the mysterious Rootcraft. But it's not my story so there you go.
And it's not like I don't get what Deonn was trying to do. Making the Arthurian legends a metaphor for magical imperialism and conquest is actually a really, really fascinating idea. And as a Arthurian scholar in my book club pointed out, Arthurian legends have a history of appropriating local legends, taking Welsh folklore and forcing a Christian spin on them. And as someone else in my book club brought up, would it have been more interesting if Bree was from the Line of Morgaine instead of Arthur? Possibly. It would have been a great take to see Bree, as the outsider, to be Morgaine, ostracized because her magic is misunderstood instead of evil. But I feel Bree being Arthur was the whole reason Deonn wrote this so it should be given the chance to play out in the entire series. I just didn't have the buy-in I wanted to have, so in all honestly, I'm probably not continuing with this series.

books asks 2, 6, and 8
2. Did you reread anything? What? Gideon the Ninth :) currently rereading Harrow. Technically Lolita which I'd read before but in a different language, and Eichmann in Jerusalem which I'd read in excerpts years ago
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to? SO many books. I still haven't finished Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine which I started in February (then I put aside because it was making me worked up ops) Our Share of Night is another big one
8. Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones? I read a few short stories collection and 14 nonfiction books (goal was 10) and met my total reading goal :))

Ya know I’m very hype for the Camelot movie, prolly cause I liked Camelot more than I did Babylonia.
I dunno, maybe it’s my bias since I have always adored Arthruian mythology or the debate about what makes a knight and the morals of chivalry, but Camelot was really good. Also *gestures vaguely* everything about Bedivere.
