I think the 5 hours 30 minutes and 3 seconds it took to make this drawing was well spent and fun all the way through. Except for the flowers, I hate drawing flowers but it was worth it. @pastelpaperplanes can’t wait for the next DTIYS ❤️ but please next time no flowers. I beg of you. Also congrats on 10k✨ you deserve it

'As an artist, I attach no importance to political conformity. Consider: Renaissance Italy gave us the greatest artists. The Talmud says at one point, “We Jews are like the olive: we give our best when we are being crushed, when we are collapsing under the burden of our foliage.” Material victory is the death of spiritual preëminence. Today we see in the Greeks of antiquity the most cultured nation. Had the Greek state not perished, what would have become of the Greeks? Colonisers and merchants. … As an artist I am against every state. Of course I must recognise it, since indeed in all my dealings I come into contact with its institutions. The state is concentric, man is eccentric. Thence arises an eternal struggle. The monk, the bachelor, and the anarchist are in the same category. Naturally I can't approve of the act of the revolutionary who tosses a bomb in a theatre to destroy the king and his children. On the other hand, have those states behaved any better which have drowned the world in a blood-bath?'
— James Joyce, 21st October 1918, from ‘Conversations with Joyce’ [1954] by Georges Borach

First time posting but I drew something that I think turned out pretty good and I wanted to share!
Context under the cut 🌸
Excerpt from a Dark Sapphic romance I've been working on:
'The lattice work that had been bracketing them ends, and the room opens up into a large viewing space, the light steaming in overhead suddenly pale in tone. Two rows of fully bloomed Rose bushes are circling the huge statue that stands illuminated in the center of the space, in shades of deep red. The statue is made of pinkish marble, carved into the image of a woman. Her arms are spread out in a dancer's pose, the legs hidden away by the toga she's been captured wearing. The sculpted fabric looks so real clinging to her thighs that it's almost uncanny. Said toga hangs loosely off one shoulder, leaving the soft rolls and curves of her breast, stomach and hip viable on one side.
She's also massive. Starting from the ground where the short base sits and stopping where her cracked neck ends, she's easily eight feet tall. Wrapped around her headless neck, and hanging from her arms and shoulders like a macabre cloak are blooming wisteria flowers. The dark purple and green contrast the pale coloring of the marble, and Evie can see why someone would spend time meticulously arranging the flowers so they grow around the art piece just as they do now.
"Beautiful." Evie breaths out, taken aback by the craftsmanship and the detail. She's not sure she's even been breathing while her eyes scanned over the statue in front of them.
"Yes, very." Ivy agrees. “It’s named Malinconia Fiorita, or Flowering Melancholy.”'
It made me wanna draw. Feel free to tell me what you think!
