artemis had been going out of her way to avoid ben, and so far her efforts had been working. she didn't have anything nice to say to her sister's ex-boyfriend, and she especially didn't want to encounter him now that things seemed to be getting heated between them again. allegra's relationship wasn't her business unless it was made into her business, but huntsville was a small town and you couldn't avoid people for long. that's why, when she found herself standing in front of him, artemis had to take a deep breath to prepare.

Masterlist

I'm new-ish to writing (i used to write fanfiction when i was like 13. i'm 19 now and write very rarely) but I really wanna do it again.

So this is a list of characters/fandoms I write for as well as some rules for asks. Some things may be missing from this list so if you dont see something on this list, feel free to ask. :))

Do add as much detail as you want to a request and please ALWAYS have at least some sort of prompt, as i'm really not good with coming up with storys on my own yet.

I WILL NOT DO SMUT SO DONT REQUEST IT! I might however do spicy stuff (Nothing more than making out or somewhat implied stuff tho).

My writing will be mostly pg 13 but please still be careful if the fic-warnings include sensitive topics, and i might repost some 18+ things so be careful when navigating my blog.

Also please include what gender/pronouns you want the reader to have (i write for all genders). If its not included I will default it as gender neutral. :)))

The small band of travelers settled in a glen just outside the marshy Swanfleet. It would take some time to follow the river up toward Rivendell, so it was decided that it’d be best to take that journey at first daylight. One by one, the members -- Gwendolyn “Wendy” Copper, shieldmaiden of Rohan; her partner and Rider of the Mark, Benjamin; and the elvin twins Selene and Artemis Claire de Lune -- all fell off to sleep.

Orion lit his pipe, the tiny flame flickering in the dark. The campfire had nearly gone out and, he thought, perhaps that was best. With the rumors circulating about the cursed One Ring having been found, he deemed it wise to not attract too much attention.

The ranger called “Amari” had thought he was the only one awake at first, until the soft chirping of crickets and rustling of trees gained fresh accompaniment.

“Far over the Misty Mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old,

We must away ‘ere break of day

To find our long forgotten gold...”

Orion looked down, to see the final and smallest member of their group -- Carewyn Cromwell-Took -- carrying a small pile of wood over to the dying campfire. It was little wonder Orion hadn’t noticed her at first. He wasn’t impressively tall himself, but he still towered over the female hobbit. The thought had crossed his mind that she might even be considered small by hobbit standards, given that she only came up to his waist at full height. 

“The pines were roaring on the height;

The winds were moaning in the night;

The fire was red, it flaming spread --

The trees like torches...blazed with light...”

Her singing had actually lulled Orion into a rather relaxed state of mind, like a child listening to an engaging story -- but seeing her putting down the stack of wood she was carrying and poke the fire prompted him to say something.

“Forgive me for interrupting,” he said very softly, “but given that we aim to travel with stealth, it may be prudent to let it die out, so as not to draw attention to ourselves.”

Carewyn looked up, startled. Then her blue eyes softened and her ruby red lips curled up in a half-smile.

“I see what you mean,” she said, “but given the rumors...well, might the Nazgul take notice?”

Orion blinked. “The Nazgul?”

“Yes -- from what I’ve heard, they’re slaves to Sauron, aren’t they?”

“Yes,” said Orion. “They were corrupted by the nine Rings of Power Sauron gave them, and so can only follow his will and orders. If the One Ring has appeared, as they say...I daresay they would be the most dangerous threat we could meet, while traveling at night.”

“That’s what I thought,” said Carewyn with a nod. “Their primary weakness is sunlight, so they shouldn’t chase us by day...but they’re also weak to fire, so...”

“...Keeping a fire lit until morning would be wise, in case we needed to defend ourselves from a Nazgul attack,” Orion finished.

His voice was very level, but he was actually quite surprised. He hadn’t expected a being of creature comforts like a hobbit to be so...well, resourceful.

Carewyn nodded and set about relighting the fire. She poked the cinders into an open flame, added a cluster of sticks and some leaves, and soon was able to bring it back to glowing, golden light.

Orion considered the tiny woman’s back with interest.

“...The song you were singing,” he mused, “is it from your homeland?”

“The Shire?” asked Carewyn. “No -- I learned it from the dwarves of Erebor. It’s the tale of how the dragon Smaug conquered their home, oh, many, many years ago...”

“You traveled to the Lonely Mountain?” Orion asked, raising his eyebrows curiously. He’d never heard of a hobbit traveling somewhere that far, let alone dangerous. He leaned forward, resting an arm on top of his crossed legs.

“Yes. My brother Jacob had apparently had dealings with the dwarves of Erebor...so I went with two of my friends from the Shire, Bill and Charlie Weasley, to meet them. The dwarves weren’t able to give me all the answers I was looking for, but they were kind enough to host us for a few days. Duncan, son of Dain and Prince of Erebor, sang the Song of the Lonely Mountain during one of their feasts, and I asked him to teach me the words. It was actually on that same trip that I first met Ben.”

“I see...”

Orion put down his pipe at last, his dark eyes trailing over Carewyn’s face with a marked interest. He hadn’t been sure what to make of the two Rohirrim who rode alongside a little she-Hobbit on a white pony when they first collided, but it seemed that this little Lady Took had far more grit than her pretty white shirt with the bow-trimmed collar and wide tan skirt would suggest.

Carewyn cocked an amused eyebrow at Orion. “Are you surprised, that I traveled to the Lonely Mountain?”

Orion inclined his head respectively. “Forgive me -- I can’t claim any intimate knowledge of hobbits...but my understanding was that your people aren’t the kind to chase adventure.”

“We’re not, for the most part,” said Carewyn. “Nor am I either, truthfully. But my brother was -- he always took more after the risk-taking ‘Took’ side of our family, out of the two of us...”

Her gaze drifted down to the fire as she settled herself down on a small stone next to it. The golden-red light of the flames passed over her face, leaving dark shadows around her eyes and on the apples of her cheeks.

“He left the Shire to travel Middle Earth,” she said softly. “But just as he was about to come home...his letters stopped abruptly. We tried to reach out to other towns close by, but no one had heard anything from him. Weeks turned into months, and then a year and still...nothing. So I finally decided to set out and find out what happened to him. And it’s that journey that’s led me here.”

“Do you believe your brother has a link to the One Ring?” asked Orion.

“I believe he was hot on its trail, at least. He tracked its last sighting down to a cave in the Misty Mountains. Apparently from there, it was rumored to have been stolen by a hobbit and taken back to the Shire.”

Orion’s eyebrows furrowed. Was Carewyn’s brother the one who’d found the Ring and supposedly brought it to the elves of Rivendell?

“How long ago was this?” he asked.

“I can’t say for sure, but it was definitely a long time ago,” said Carewyn with a frown. “I hardly know how it could’ve been so long without anyone in the Shire catching wise, considering how in-everyone-else’s-business they all are...but considering the One Ring has now been found, I guess we’ll find out whether what Jacob heard is true or not.”

“And you might have your next lead about what happened to your brother,” surmised Orion.

Carewyn nodded, her eyes still on the flames. She paused for a moment -- then, without fully raising her head, she looked up at Orion out the top side of her eye.

“...Amari...may I ask you about your homeland?”

Orion raised his eyebrows airily.

“I’m afraid I don’t have one to speak about, Ms. Took.”

Carewyn frowned. “Did your family also travel?”

“If they did, I can’t testify to it,” said Orion with a light shrug of his shoulders.

Carewyn looked confused for only a few seconds -- then her eyes softened in a sad realization.

“...Do you not have a family, Amari?”

Orion gave the hobbit a small, reassuring smile. “No. But don’t pity me too much, Ms. Took. I’ve created a family of my own over the years, out of the friends I’ve made across Middle Earth. Much like you have, from what I can see.”

He nodded to the two sleeping Coppers. Wendy had fallen asleep with her head on Ben’s shoulder, only for Ben to likewise fall asleep with his head on top of hers.

Carewyn’s eyes softened upon her friends.

“...Yes, I have,” she murmured, and her voice echoed with fondness.

She glanced back up at Orion, her ruby red lips curled up in a small smile.

“I’d say you have more royalty in your family than I do in mine, however.”

Orion looked down at Carewyn, looking a bit taken aback for the first time.

“...What makes you say that?”

His voice was as balanced as usual, but he watched her face very carefully, all the same.

Carewyn’s eyes drifted away, landing somewhere in the area of his shoulder as she smiled a bit more wryly.

“Your...affect, I suppose,” she said thoughtfully. “Something in the way you talk and hold yourself reminds me of Duncan...though, of course, Duncan doesn’t tower over me nearly as much as you do.”

Orion couldn’t fight back a soft chuckle. “I daresay the Prince of Erebor also doesn’t dress in the attire of a ranger.”

His dark eyes sparkled with amusement, but they still trailed over the hobbit’s ginger hair and almond-shaped eyes carefully.

This Carewyn Cromwell-Took was truly a very intriguing woman...

Her ruby red lips still curled up in a pretty smile, Carewyn got to her feet and crossed over to the large tent that Orion, Ben, and Artemis had put up earlier. 

“Now then, shouldn’t you get off to bed too?” she said. “If you’re going to be helping us navigate tomorrow, your eyes will need to be in top shape.”

“Yes, but one of us should stand guard over the camp,” Orion pointed out. Seeing Carewyn’s reproachful look, he added a bit more gently, “I shall go to sleep once you have, Ms. Took.”

He suspected that she herself was also the sort of person to not go to sleep until everyone else had. It appeared he was right, since she crossed her arms and gave him a rather cool expression.

“I will go to sleep once I know you’re actually going to go to sleep, not just say you’re going to do it.”

Orion chuckled again. “All right, then.”

He leaned back onto the grass, resting his arms behind his head and folding his cloak into something of a pillow. Once he was lying down, he heard the flap of the tent move again.

“Oh...and Amari?”

“Yes, Ms. Took?”

“Please call me Carewyn. Or ‘Carey,’ if you’d prefer. I don’t let anyone call me ‘Ms. Took,’ unless they’re someone I’d like to remain a stranger.”

“I’m grateful that I’m not in that category, at least.”

Despite the lightness in his voice, however, Orion’s dark eyes softened slightly. He could hear the pretty smile in her voice when she spoke again.

“Good night, Amari.”

“...Good night, Carewyn.”

Based out of Athens, GA, Ashes to Omens formed in late July 2017 as a 4 piece and have influences from Breaking Benjamin, Nothing More, Audioslave, Iron Maiden and more. Not long after their formation, vocalist James Branton was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and underwent treatment for it.

The band quickly released their debut single “The Screws”, in August of 2017 and accompanied by a music video in February 2018. After overcoming cancer, Branton added a 2nd guitarist to the band and they became a 5 piece. Their self-titled debut album hit the indie charts in June 2018 and catapulted them to the number one position for Rock on Reverbnation in Athens where they held for over a year.

Not long after the release of their debut ep, they began work on their 2nd album. The first release was “The Conflict Within”. It was featured in Georgia Music Spotlight as being “energetic, straight ahead hard rock”. Full of monolithic mid-tempo hard rock riffs, anthemic (Slash-esque) guitar solos, and gritty, commanding vocals with the ideal level of attitude and energy for the genre. As well as getting a stellar review of their most recent single, “The Conflict Within” in Rawckus Magazine.

In July-August 2018, the band opened for legendary Cinderella frontman, Tom Keifer to a sold out crowd at Innovation Amphitheater to an over-whelmingly positive response and left with the crowd on their feet. They have also shared the stage with several national acts, including REHAB, Hallowpoint (Missouri) and Demon In Me (Cali) and Lullwater. They are currently tracking their 2nd album with the incredible Led Belly Studios in Dawsonville, GA with engineer, Matt Washburn. Ledbelly is responsible for several releases from national acts Mastadon, Artemis Pyledriver, Legion X and many more. The album will be produced ,mixed and mastered by Justin Davis of American Music out of Seattle, Washington. Justin is known for his amazing work with Lullwater’s most recent album.

On October 2nd of 2020 the band released “War Cry”, a song about overcoming anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts during difficult times. It will be released independently. Early listening by blogs and radio stations have already given it stellar reviews.

Robin x Reader: The Bird Tattoo~Part Four (Soulmate AU)

A/n: I thought I lost the entire first half of it, it scared me half to death. I also rewrote it like, twelve times. Henze is pronounced as Hen-zee, by the way. Cheesy and angsty vibes coming your way. A little gore? Also, it’s not as long as usual because every time I take my hands off the keyboard, they start to shake and it’s hard to type when that happens.

You looked down at your watch, and you weren't surprised that it was 8:26 AM. It was the weekend and most teenagers slept in, but not you. You switched back and forth between investigating and teaching yourself more Romanian. You didn't get a single moment of sleep, but you couldn't even if you tried.

    You took off your mask and used the camera on your phone to look at your face. Your eyes were bloodshot and there were slight bags under your eyes. The lack of sleep on a regular basis was taking a toll on you, but there were things to be done. Procrastinating important things? Not your cup of tea. But today you felt... different. And not in a good way. You chalked it up to being tired and stressed, as usual.

    So you put the domino mask back on, and went back to work. You pushed your Romanian text book aside; you were a little over half way fluent in the language. On your laptop, you pulled up the file that the Justice League had for about the twentieth time since you started. 

     You kept digging and digging in that file, repeating steps you’d done dozens of times. An idea struck you, and you felt stupid for not thinking of it earlier. Who was The Doctor, before he went insane? What life did he live, what was his son like? You knew his son’s name was Benjamin, since he rambled and muttered about him when you were being one of his ‘experiments’.

     You didn’t feel sorry. You lost your family to that mentally corrupt man and at this point, you were hell-bent on revenge. For taking your family from you, extinguishing your hopes for a happy normal life, and turning you into a monster to be used as a weapon to avenge Benjamin. Even though you did escape and blow his lab sky-high, you knew deep down that he was alive and you were going to get rid of him, once and for all. 

     Finally, you found a name. Cassius Henze. The last name was one you heard before, but not under any significant events.

     You jotted the name down at lightning speed, and you searched the name up once your pencil left the paper. One by one, several results came up, all about either ‘Animal Scientist Dr. Cassius Henze’ or the ‘Death of Benjamin Henze’. They were about either his success as a scientist, or how his son was killed.

     You chose the first link that described Benjamin’s death. Ever since the first day after you and your family were kidnapped, you heard the words ‘Benjamin’, ‘killed’, ‘dead’, or the sentence ‘They will pay’ every day.

          The various articles describing the death of the successful scientist’s son were not what you expected. It was more of an accident, from what you could tell. Cassius and his son were at a military base so radiology and biology research could be exchanged, experiments could take place, and awards could be given. 

     It turns out that five-year-old Benjamin Henze was under the supervision of a fellow scientist in training, or intern, while an experiment was taking place. From what you gathered, the intern was a little butt-hurt about being forced to watch a child instead of participating in the experimentation. So he took it upon himself to start his own experiment, in a more secluded lab. Benjamin tottered behind his ‘babysitter’ with a smile and some giggles. 

     If the intern really knew what he was doing, he wouldn’t have been an intern. There was a glass chamber, designed to test on animals (legally, at the time), weapons, or any sort of life involved. This experiment was going to use a simple cactus from the plant supply brought for this very purpose. After the intern slid the cactus inside, he gathered his materials and combined them with careful precision, in incorrect and dangerous amounts. The little toddler wandered into the chamber before it was sealed shut; his small height and the obliviousness of the intern left him unseen.

     The screams and cries of Benjamin Henze were heard all around the base, and the intern was yelling and frantically trying to open the door. By the time Cassius Henze sprinted the lab in question, his son was burned and dead, with his baby blue eyes still open.

          The story brought real tears to the surface, but you wiped them away. It didn’t make you forgive The Doctor, but you felt horrible for Benjamin. Killed by an ignorant and arrogant intern, without any idea of what was going on. An innocent life snuffed out in the blink of an un-watchful eye.

     With a shudder, you moved to one of the more positive results. A video of Cassius Henze receiving an award. You didn’t expect Benjamin to be in it, but when you watched it, you learned his voice. It was soft and bubbly, with enthusiasm and energy. Now, you had something to use against The Doctor if all else fails. But your heart still ached for Benjamin. Not for Cassius, hell no, but Benjamin’s life didn’t deserve to end so soon and in such a horrid way.

     You sifted through the internet a few more times, to make sure the information you found was accurate, before moving on to more recent discoveries. You started to compare current cases with the ones when you were an experiment, and you downloaded or wrote down all of it.

     The clock read 10:48 AM. A normal teenager would still be sleeping, but you were sure Artemis would be here by now to either do some training or look for you. And your body yearned for some good coffee. You prayed that Wally didn’t make it this time; you nearly threw up after the first sip.

     You closed the laptop and organized your stacks of notes. The Romanian worksheets you printed were almost filled out, so you folded them and put them inside your textbook. The notes took their place in a small drawer in the desk, and you stood up and shuffled to the exit. 

     On your way there, you knocked into some book shelves and had to quickly catch a couple books to prevent them from falling. And you had to put them back in their right places. The library was one of your favorite places in Mount Justice. It was literally two stories of books, and a quiet place to relax and work. You were usually busy with a variety of things, but you took the time to read a good novel on occasion.

    You heard the team talking in the kitchen, and although you didn't feel up to social interaction, you went there anyway. The food was in there, anyway. You put restocking your room’s stash on your agenda for the day. There were some foods you hid from Wally, and he wouldn’t dare go in your room without asking.

    All conversation stopped when you tiredly trudged into the kitchen. They were all staring at you, and it was eventually uncomfortable. “Can I help you?” You hoped you didn't sound too grumpy.

    “Did you even leave the library?” Robin asked.

    “No,” You stated as you poured a hot cup of coffee. “I had several things to catch up on. I got a lot done.” You glanced at the coffee pot. “By the way, who made this coffee?”

     “Robin.”

     “Thank God, I would die if Wally made it again.” You didn’t care who else made the coffee, just as long as Wally wasn’t the one who did.

     Wally looked offended as you took his attention away from his large plate of pancakes and bacon. “What were you guys doing in the library?” He wiggled his eyebrows, but Artemis whacked the back of his head. “Ow!”

     “Robin couldn’t sleep and he ended up finding me, and I was up late to make up for all the research I lost.” you pointed a glare at Robin, who busied himself with finishing a glass of orange juice.

    “You didn't sleep, either.” M’gann added. “You're pretty much radiating exhaustion.” She barely had to read your mind; she easily sensed it.

    “Like I said, I had to catch up on some things.” The ceramic mug of coffee warmed your hands and you took a sip. You pulled it away from your lips and sighed. “There we go, that tastes so much better... This is definitely what I need in the mornings.”

    Artemis was worried about your health. You didn’t sleep much in the first place, and now you pulled another all-nighter. She smiled when you were quietly muttering about your coffee; it was rather cute.

     You leaned against the counter and watched all your friends talk and banter at the table. The scene made you smile a little; they were like a family, and this is what you pictured. You only got to experience moments like these for a short amount of time when you were younger.

     Robin slid on over next to you, drinking his own coffee. You didn’t take Robin for a coffee drinker, but he did make it, so he had a right. “So, you like my coffee?” He asked, and he took an obnoxious sip. “I think I did pretty good.”

     You saw an opportunity, and you took it. “Aren’t you like, twelve?” The corners of your mouth turned up a little, and Artemis barely heard it but she giggled. “I didn’t think a twelve-year-old body could handle coffee.”

     “I am not twelve,” Robin hissed. He started to get worked up, but he didn’t want to set you off.

     “That’s exactly what a twelve-year-old would say.” You reached for the almost empty coffee pot, but Robin grabbed it at the same time. His hand was over yours, and you had a solid grip on the handle. He was essentially holding your hand. You just wanted the coffee. More for it’s taste, rather than the caffeine. Caffeine had very little effect on you, unless consumed in horrendously large amounts.

     Robin narrowed his eyes behind his sunglasses. He wanted the coffee almost as much as you did. “Care to let go?” He didn’t even register that he was grabbing your hand, not the handle.

     “You’re the one holding my hand.” You stated, raising an eyebrow. The words caused most of the team to stop talking and stare. Mockingbird? Robin? Hand-holding? What kind of tomfoolery is this?

     Robin looked down at your hand in his and he yanked it back. His face turned a light pink and he became very flustered. ‘Did that just happen?’ Of all the things he was going to do today, holding Mockingbird’s hand was not on the list. He was unhappy.

     The moment his hand left yours, you quite literally sprinted out of the kitchen with the coffee pot in hand. Your own cheeks were dusted with pink, but you shut that down as soon as it started. “No time for that.” You grumbled. You quite literally slid into your room and slammed the door. The noise echoed throughout the cave, and you had the rest of the coffee to yourself.

“You held her hand!” Wally taunted. It was like elementary school all over again; a boy holds a girl’s hand and everyone flips their shit. “And you didn’t try to fight each other, that’s a great improvement. I’m so proud!”

     Artemis rolled her eyes. “And how old are you?” Wally acted so childish sometimes, but it wasn’t something she would want to change about him. She didn’t want him to change at all.

     The smirk he had was contagious. “I’ve been told sixteen, but I can be as old as you want me be, babe.” Wally winked and he leaned back in his chair so the two front legs were off the ground.

     He didn’t see her place a hand on the back of his chair because he was paying more attention to her face getting closer. Wally was entranced by her sparkling dark grey eyes, so much so that he had the shock of his life when he ended up on the floor in an odd position with his chair. “You’ve got to be kidding me...” And to think that he was so close.

     The group shared a good laugh as Wally pulled himself up from the floor. He put his chair upright, sat in it, and proceeded to pout like a child. “Okay, okay, for once, take the attention away from me, and put it back on Robin.” Wally held his hands up, then gestured to Robin.”Have you guys not noticed how their behavior has changed recently? Aside from that whole ‘sorry I wiped your tablet’ thing, of course.”

     Robin opened his mouth to aggressively deny it, but it was no use.

     “Yes, I have, now that I think about it.” Kaldur pondered. “That is normal for those who will soon find their soulmate, yes?”

     “So I’ve heard.” Artemis said, and a slow smile came across her face.

     Conner didn’t know much about the whole soulmate system, but he was catching on. “Are you saying that they could be soulmates?”

     Robin was mortified. The last thing he thought he wanted was to be your soulmate. His mind never willingly  touched the idea of being your soulmate. But oh how he yearned for one. That probably was the reason he was acting out of character, but he didn’t want it to be you. At least, his brain didn’t. His heart had something else in mind.

     “No! They are not!” Robin snapped out of it and added his input on the situation. “Not going to happen! I am not to be soulmates with Mockingbird!”

     “I’m going to laugh when you are.”

     “No!”

     Kaldur shrugged. “I guess we will find out in five days.”

     Robin never thought that he would anticipate and dread his tattoo date at the same time.

You were still feeling odd by the time you looked down upon Gotham City from a tall building. It was the end of a long but relatively enjoyable day. Although you usually patrolled Star City, you took a little detour on your way back to Mount Justice. You took full advantage of the zeta tubes; Star City and Gotham City were legitimately on opposite sides of the country. If someone said you could get there and back with your motorcycle in one night, you’d laugh in their face.

     You crawled and jumped until you sat next to a gargoyle. You let your legs hang over the edge as you studied the life that pulsed through the city. So many people, so many places to be. Cities like Gotham were like complex clockwork; interesting but difficult.

     A mother and a father with their two children walking through the park caught your eye. They looked so... happy. Smiling and laughing with each other in a cruel world. The park was lit with streetlamps, so they could see their way through the night and get home safely. Hopefully. 

     You remembered those days. Being happy with your mother, father, and older sister. At the time, you hardly knew what crime was. It never came close to touching you, you never saw it, and it never crossed your mind. You didn’t know what it was like until it was ripped away in a matter of minutes. One moment, you were with your family on your way back from eating out. The next moment, you were chained to a wall and gagged in a dimly lit basement of a warehouse turned into a lab.

     You often wondered about what life would be like if that didn’t happen. How different would things be if you and your family weren’t kidnapped? What if you didn’t end up being the only one to survive the experiments? Maybe instead of running through the night, taking out criminals or sitting next to gargoyles, you’d be sitting at a dinner table, eating with your family while talking about your day.

     The family you had now, the team, you wouldn’t trade for the world. But you sometimes still begged and cried for the family you once had years ago. You had the memories of them, but you couldn’t remember how they felt. You remembered the sounds, but not the love in them.

     Just as a tear started to fall, you heard the loud woosh of a cape, but you weren’t alarmed. You adjusted to the sound of Batman’s cape; he wasn’t amused when you made the noise back. “Mockingbird.” His deep baritone voice was a favorite of yours to mimic.

     “Batman.” You said just as solemnly. 

     “Why is she in Gotham?” Robin asked through Batman’s comm. The Dynamic Duo were making their nightly patrol, and they separated to cover more ground. “Doesn’t she know that this is our territory?” Robin instinctively morphed back into his irritated self when you were mentioned. You weren’t expecting anything different.

     “What are you doing in Gotham?” Batman inquired. He also noticed something was off about your behavior lately, but anyone could tell that you were sad.

     You didn’t even turn to look at him. “Honestly?” You didn’t try to hide your emotion. “I’m thinking about what my family could have been. If I didn’t become a stupid Mockingbird.” It was one of those moments when you would trade anything, even your powers, to have them back again.

     Batman knew that you blamed yourself, even if you didn’t realize it. He knew he did when his parents were shot. “It wasn’t your fault.”

     “I never said it was.” You voice started to have an edge to it. The dark corner of your mind sometimes said it was your fault, but it was never something you voiced. “We finished things up in Star City, so I decided to drop by on my way home.” 

     “Does Black Canary know you’re out here?”

     “I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t. But then again, it’s not like she dropped me off in a mountain and told me ‘this is your home now, learn to work with others, have fun’.” You didn’t know what made your mood plummet that night, but it was noticeable.

     Dinah knew your parents, and vaguely you and your sister, before things changed. It made even more sense to become her protege when you came back with the sound manipulation powers of a mockingbird. You thought of her as a mother figure overtime, and she saw you as a daughter in return. When you moved to Mount Justice, you felt like you were kicked out of the home you grew used to. You enjoyed living in the cave now, but it still stung.

     “Isn’t it a school night?”

     “Yes,” you weren’t used to having this long of a conversation with the Batman. Normally, you were getting scolded. “Remind Robin that school pictures are on Tuesday. I know I’m not looking forward to it.” You went to the same school Robin did, but he only heard about you going there once or twice.

     You and Batman stood in a comfortable silence while Robin started to impatiently chatter through the comm system. When he stated that he was on his way to Batman’s position, the tall and brooding vigilante looked down at you. “Robin is on his way.” He understood how you and Robin interacted (he ranted about you often enough), so he warned you ahead of time. Even though you weren’t his protege or particularly close to him, he sympathized with you. He knew what it felt like to be in your position.

     “I’ll take my leave then. Thanks for not kicking me out.” 

     You heard the woosh of a smaller cape, and you briefly saw his black, red, and yellow colors before you gracefully jumped off the building. 

     Robin nearly choked on air and he ran over to the side of the building, hoping you weren’t a human pancake. But he saw nothing. Only a busy street that was bustling with people and taxis and cars.

     “Black Canary hates when she does that.” Batman stated after a short pause.

     “I can see why.”

NASA Contractors Share the Grief of Chandrayaan-2 Failure

The team was gathered in a conference room last week, about 35 in all, ready to celebrate India’s triumph: the country’s first lunar landing. Like many watching the livestream broadcast from the control center in Bengaluru half a world away, John Thornton, the chief executive of Astrobotic, a Pittsburgh company that is developing a moon lander of its own, was confident India would stick it, setting off celebrations across the world.

But there was silence and long faces in India’s mission control, not celebration, when they lost contact with the lunar craft, and there was silence, too, in Astrobotic’s conference room, as Thornton’s team was reminded that the difficulties of orbital mechanics and the vacuum of space are not to be taken for granted. “Everything has to be working just right,” he said. “It’s like humankind against space.”

Soon it will be their turn to attempt to land on the moon. Astrobotic is one of nine companies that NASA is betting on as part of a program to deliver science experiments to the surface of the moon. The list is comprised of small startups, like Thornton’s venture, which grew out of Carnegie Mellon University, and industry stalwarts, such as Lockheed Martin and Draper, which provided navigation and guidance systems during the Apollo era.

NASA intends to invest $2.6 billion over 10 years in relatively small contracts – some under $100 million or so – for delivery services to the moon under a program called Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS). That’s a small fraction of the estimated $20 to $30 billion it would spend on its Artemis program, which is designed to get humans to the moon’s surface by 2024.

Under CLPS, NASA isn’t designing, building or operating the landers that will make these lunar trips – that’s all up to the companies. Instead, NASA is simply hiring them to provide a FedEx-like service to a lifeless celestial body 240,000 miles away. The plans even include sending a rover to the lunar south pole, a mission that could help NASA decide where its astronauts should land.

The endeavour is risky, the effort entrepreneurial, and failure is more than an option, NASA says, it’s likely.

And that’s just how NASA wants it, as it tries to hit a cadence of two deliveries to the moon per year starting in 2021.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine likens the program to a venture capital fund investing in a startup, where the upside is as high as the risk of failure. And some of the companies NASA is looking to are unconventional. One, Firefly, went bankrupt in 2016 when it lost a key investor. Another, Masten, has just 12 employees and works out of a dusty barn in the Mojave desert.

“The idea is that it is low investment, high risk, which means some will fail,” Bridenstine said in an interview. “But if one is successful, the returns to NASA and the returns to the United States of America will be significant.”

Earlier this year, he told reporters, “It’s important we get back to the moon as fast as possible. We’re going to take shots on goal.”

Astrobotic plans its first moon mission in 2021. It would be the culmination of a long and unlikely odyssey. The company was co-founded in 2007 by a Carnegie Mellon University professor, who recruited some of his current and former robotics students to join him in building a spacecraft for the Google Lunar X Prize, then a competition to get payloads to the moon.

The company was able to drum up some money from angel investors and the university, but still it went through “nearly two deaths,” Thornton said. He took over as CEO, and refocused the company on trying to develop and market a commercial delivery service to the moon.

The idea was derided as fantasy, and as he was pitching Astrobotic to investors at a conference there was “one guy laughing the entire time,” he recalled. “And he wasn’t laughing with me.”

Earlier this year, however, NASA awarded it a $79.5 million contract, a big source of revenue for the small company that gave it a douse of credibility it hadn’t had before. Last month, it chose its ride to the moon, signing a deal with the United Launch Alliance to launch its Peregrine lunar lander, which stands at just over 6-feet tall, on ULA’s Vulcan Centaur rocket.

But getting to the moon is hard, as Israel learned in April when its Beresheet spacecraft crashed into the moon. It was a devastating outcome, but industry leaders and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in the mission command center, vowed to learn from it and push on. “If at first you don’t succeed, you try again,” Netanyahu said.

Then last week, India lost communication with its spacecraft as it descended toward the moon, a heartbreaking outcome for the country’s space agency. It has since located the lander but has not established communication with it or released any details about its condition.

India is also taking stock of its lunar ambitions. The lunar lander seemed to be on the right trajectory, but then in the final moments appeared to fall straight down, stunning the people packed in the space agency’s control center. Afterward, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “our determination to touch the moon has become even stronger.” And he consoled a distraught K. Sivan, the head of the county’s space agency, with an emotional embrace.

In a tweet, NASA encouraged the Indian space agency, saying, “you have inspired us with your journey.” And it vowed to work to “explore our solar system together.”

These were the first attempts by Israel and India to land on the surface of the moon, so failure may have been expected, as it was at the dawn of the Space Age, when countries treated the moon like a dartboard, crashing spacecraft into the lunar surface as if it were target practice.

In the 1960s, spacecraft like the Soviet Luna 2 and NASA’s Ranger 7 plowed into the lunar surface routinely, as space agencies taught themselves how to hit a another celestial body.

Failed moon missions might have been politically acceptable when the U.S. was racing the Soviet Union in the Cold War space race. Today, however, there could be a backlash if NASA and its commercial partners can’t successfully perform a feat that NASA first accomplished in the 1960s.

There may also be institutional resistance to adopting a Silicon Valley ethos – fail fast, iterate, try again – to a 60-year-old federal bureaucracy overseen by the United States Congress, a body not likely to rejoice at the prospect of expensive spacecraft careening into Earth’s closest neighbor.

“In reality, the question we’ll have is how much tolerance will our political system have for failure?” said Michael Neufeld, a senior curator in at the National Air and Space Museum. “Does the taxpayer want to pay for stuff that’s blowing up and crashing? It’s a lot easier to talk about taking risk than it is to actually do it.”

If India, which has one of the most robust space agencies in the world, and successfully put a spacecraft in orbit around the moon in 2008, had troubles landing, how can a bunch of startups, some working out of glorified garages, and relying on small government contracts and venture capital funds do it?

The answer, NASA says, is that the commercial space industry has come a long way, developing new technologies and taking on increasing responsibility for NASA. Two companies – Northrop Grumman and SpaceX – deliver cargo and supplies to the International Space Station and another two, SpaceX and Boeing, are working to fly astronauts there.

Given the maturity in the industry, Steven Clarke, NASA’s deputy associate administrator for exploration, said he is confident that private industry is ready to take on the moon, even if some of the companies in the program have never flown anything to space before.

The “strengths of the commercial industry have come up and matured, and so we’re willing to take additional risk with them,” he said in an interview.

But while NASA says it’s willing to tolerate a certain amount of failure, the companies involved say their goal is to succeed. They want to have not just NASA as a customer, but to ultimately build a commercial business flying science experiments and payloads to the lunar surface.

“For us, success is of the utmost importance,” Thornton said. “It’s not like we’re out there taking unreasonable risk. That does not work for our business plan. The one who will lead in this market five years from now is the one who has successful flights.”
