Women Type Designers: JIMENA GAMIO
Jimena Gamio is a Peruvian designer based in Los Angeles, who, as part of the 2021 Typographer-in-Residence program organized by the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography, designed a typeface called Mamá specifically for the indigenous Quechua language spoken in the Andean region of South America. The name Mamá comes from the Peruvian saying “Pachamama,” meaning mother earth gives to you, and you should give back. Gamio writes:
The compositions of curves and rectangles found in Peruvian architecture are the basis for Mamá; most of the letters were created with these same two shapes, based on the arched windows and angular doors, The forms are also inspired by the chunky, bold, and uneven typography that surrounded me while I grew up in Lima.
Jimena Gamio graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, where she currently teaches typography at the graduate level. Her design practice spans cultural and commercial clients, focusing on identity systems, editorial design, and typography. The examples shown here are from Quechua: The People’s Speech, one of four volumes in the set Mujeres Hispanas y Tipografía, a program highlighting the talent and creativity of Hispanic women designers, published in Pasadena, California by the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography in 2022.
The phrase in the first image, Ama Quella, is part of a popular saying among Quechua speakers in Peru, and means, “Do not be lazy.”

Agencies play a critical role in ensuring that the next generation of creatives reflects the world we live in, and Rudy Manning takes that responsibility very seriously. As the co-founder and chief creative officer of Pastilla Inc., he is dedicated to not only providing services for a diverse range of clients, but also for making opportunities to get more people of color working in the design.
Rudy starts off talking more about Pastilla, and showing the ins and outs of what it takes to operate an agency. He also spoke about growing up in Panama and Germany before coming to the U.S., shared some stories of his early days designing DVD magazines, and how the combination of these experiences brought him to founding his own creative agency. Rudy also talked about teaching the next generation of designers at ArtCenter, being board president at Art Division, and gave some great advice for anyone looking to start their own agency one day. Rudy’s passion for all things design and his drive to help uplift others truly makes him a design leader worth following!

Hey! Absolutely love your art, such fun things depicted gorgeously! I was scrolling through all your old art, and you've progressed so amazingly-- are you an art school student or is there anything you did to get so good? (besides draw loads of course, lol). I really like how strong your personal voice is, it feel like you draw the stuff you really like and I just love that about your art. (Also your colors are so nice I want to eat your art thanks i hope u have a nice day)
Thank you so much! The answer to that question is kind of a yes and no, more below:
I decided partway through my first year of college to pursue art instead of biology, but the college I was at didn't have much in the way of art programs so I cobbled together an independent concept art major out of classes in film, fashion, and visual studies.
It was a pretty makeshift way to go about it, and probably not the best way to get an art education, but I'm glad I did it since it also gave me the opportunity to take classes in astronomy, computer programming, evolutionary biology, linguistics, and other subjects that I find interesting.
The best thing I did for my artistic development in undergrad was to take summer classes and a gap semester at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena. It's the kind of school where instead of applying to and enrolling in a multi-year program, you pay for the individual classes you want each semester and show up. I would absolutely recommend it (they offer online classes now too) over going to an art school. It's a fraction of the cost (around $800 per class) for basically the same quality of instruction.
I went to figure drawing workshops at ArtCenter occasionally and I overheard even their students talking about how CDA had instruction that was just as good as ArtCenter's for far cheaper. And basically every artist I've heard talk about the subject of "is art school worth it" nowadays has said that the answer is no.
Since graduating I've continued to take online courses from CDA, Brainstorm School, and also artists offering their own independent classes like Kat Tsai and Zac Retz.
So that's the path I've been on so far! One of the many pieces of good advice I got from one of my instructors, Scott Flanders, was to be honest with yourself about what you like and why you like it and to honor that when you design. So it's encouraging to hear that it's coming through in my work!

Soey Milk (Korean, born 1989)
Earthlings, 2015
Oil and twigs on canvas
36 × 36 in (91.4 × 91.4 cm)
Private collection
The portraits of Soey Milk express a serene femininity, rich with color and symbolism. Evoking the ethereal and erotic paintings of Gustav Klimt, Milk’s photorealistic figures melt into ambiguous textural backgrounds that she enhances with glitter, fabric, and flower petals. In addition to her mixed-media paintings, Milk creates meticulous graphite drawings—notably seen on the cover art for John Mayer’s album The Search for Everything (2017). Her works have been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad, and she has been featured in publications such as Beautiful Bizarre and American Art Collector. Milk earned her BFA from the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, and mentors in the MFA Program at Laguna College of Art and Design.

you don't have to say it if you don't want to, but what uni did you go to? (if you don't wanna tell, then, are there any other good artist universities you know about that you'd recommend?)
I’ve mentioned it before but in the name of “internet safety” I’ll just give you the schools I applied to (and got into all of them!! Hehe)
Rhode Island School of Design
Parsons School of Design (NYC)
Ringling College of Art & Design (Florida… my dad said if I ever went there he would never visit bc he hates Florida so much…..)
Savannah College of Art and Design (for profit but it’s a nice school and I love the town)
School of the Art Institute of Chicago (nice place but COLD in winter)
I also considered Cooper Union, CalArts, ArtCenter (Pasadena), Pratt (tho I think they ended their illustration program), MICA, FIT, and SVA.
Tbh tho it’s not *really* about the school you go to but how you study. You can go to the best school in the world and not get Jack shit in terms of a career if you don’t apply yourself. I know someone who went to a “lesser” art school and now works for Disney Animation bc he went full ham at school.

Wood Engraving Wednesday
RICHARD WAGENER
Today we present three wood engravings by Northern California engraver and fine press publisher Richard Wagener (b. 1944). Wagener has an undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego and a graduate degree from ArtCenter College of Design. He has been engraving wood for over forty years and his work has been in a number of fine press editions, most notably with Peter Koch in Berkeley and the Book Club of California. In 2006 Wagener established his imprint Mixolydian Editions, to publish fine press editions of his own work, and Magnolia Editions, a fine art print studio in Oakland, California, providing artists with technical expertise and access to advanced printmaking tools. His collaboration with David Pascoe of Nawakum Press earned them the 2016 Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design, and Wagener was also awarded the 2016 Oscar Lewis Award for contributions to the book arts.
The prints shown here are from broadsides included in portfolios of the deluxe editions of Parenthesis. Journal of the Fine Press Book Association. The first, a 2000 engraving entitled Euphorbia halipedicola, was printed at Wagener's Mixolydian Editions in 2015 with Bruce Whiteman's 2002 text Succulent for the portfolio of Parenthesis 29, Autumn 2015. The next two were printed for the portfolio of Parenthesis 24, Autumn 2013: the first, Outlook Juniper (2009) was printed with a text by John Muir at the Havilah Press in Emeryville, California; the next, Koch Peak, with a text by Peter Koch, was printed by Wagener in an edition of 175 copies.
Our run of Parenthesis is another donation from the estate of our dear friend Dennis Bayuzick.

Pasadena ArtNight, Pasadena, CA 91101
Love ArtNight in Pasadena. It happens twice a year, once in March and again in October. ArtNight is a free evening of art, music, and entertainment at multiple venues across Pasadena. It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit the smaller art venues that tend to be overlooked. The participating organizations vary every time and the programming changes as well. It’s amazing how many arts and cultural institutions there are in Pasadena, probably more than any city its size. I still haven’t made it to every venue, even though I’ve been attending ArtNight for years.
Free shuttles are available to take you to different parts of Pasadena. The event starts at 6 PM and lasts till 10 PM. Some food trucks also participate.
In March 2024, the following organizations participated:
Alkebu-Lan Cultural Center (hip hop dance performances, capoeira demonstrations)
Armory Center for the Arts
Artcenter
Artworks Teen Center
City Hall
Jackie Robinson Community Center (live music, art exhibits)
Lineage Performing Arts Center
Muse-ique at the Pasadena Senior Center
Norton Simon Museum
Parson's Nose Theater
Pasadena City College
Pasadena Museum of History
Pasadena Public Library Jefferson Branch
Pasadena Unified School District (student artwork)
Red Hen Press
Remainders Creative Reuse (gallery show, live music, free art activities)
Shumei Arts Council
The Gamble House with California Art Club
USC Pacific Asia Museum
5 out of 5 stars
