Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You CANNOT tell me **any** of these were made digitally?!
They look as if they were made with alcohol markers, wooden coloring pencils and the greatest ammount of skill ever!!
Wtf?!
What kind of brushes and settings are they using?!
Am I just bad at digital art??
Is it just a problem of me not being able to understand fucking color theory??
Do I need to sell my soul???
What the fuck?!
I'm so jealous!!
But frl if anyone knows what kinds of brushes and stuff I need to study up on to learn these skills.. please let me know..
I'm trying really hard to learn..

what are some recurring motifs/ideas/traits in your character designs? for example, I like:
multiple faces/heads
long, stripy body parts
boots, gloves, hats, and tunics
fangs
(if you can't think of any, try looking through your old artwork and see if you can spot some!)

I have a question regarding how you draw.
How do you draw boys' mouths without making mistakes? I try, but they always come out weird or I don't like the way they look.
Do you have a model or do you watch the series over and over again until you find the perfect mouth?
-cries in español-
So mouths are very fun in the Rise style! I will say, studying as many screenshots as you can will massively help, Ive watched the show so much that I don’t really need to look up references for expressions, and if I go off model I don’t much mind. And sometimes I’ll draw and erase over and over until I get the exact look I want. It really is just practice, practice, practice!
But just a few quick tips that I personally try to stick to!
Most of the turtles have this little Z on the prominent side (whichever side they’re facing), then the middle of their upper lip has an curve or arch. This will typically (but not always!) be a consistent starting point, no matter what expression you’re doing. Next, adding little creases and dimples on the sides can help make various expressions stronger. For teeth, I tend to keep them very simple, unless they are clenched, then I’ll have some fun with making them sharp and adding a few small peaks of gum showing. Less detail is usually better when drawing sets of teeth, unless you are going for comedic realism—in that case more details can add a humorous note to an angry expression.
Don’t be afraid to make the mouth or eyes bigger or smaller than they should be. If they take up more space or get mushed closer together, it can really help push the feeling you want to convey. Truthfully, as long as it looks good as a whole, things can shift off your guidelines. Squash and stretch are a huge staple of cartooning, and you don’t need to adhere so strongly to following realistic feature placement, as long as it makes enough sense, looks good, and it gets your point across.

Hey artist if I commissioned an oc drawing for you and sent a google doc full of things like references, outfit explanations, posing ideas, personality (such as “they’re very bouncy/bubbly”) for said posing and (if it’s 2 characters) relations like “they’re twins” or is that too much? I don’t wanna overdo it and overwhelm y’all with all this information but I also just wanna try to make things as easy as possible by just….writing things out

What do you use to create your illustrations?
Just wondering,
And have a great day!
Digital: iPad Pro and Procreate
Traditional: Himi gouache, Prismacolor pencils and just regular 0.7 mechanical pencils for sketching.
I shared my digital brushes a couple posts ago

Why do we find it okay as artists to redo "the greats" arts, to make 1:1 of them, to use them as practice, to refference them in our own works,
But then if you did the same with a small artist's work, you're suddenly an art theif, a cheater, a liar, a terrible person??
Why is it acceptable for me to make fanart of any anime character I so please, but if I come across someone's OCs online I'm expected to ask their concent if I wanna make fanart?
Small artists and "the greats" are the same, we're all just artists.
I genuinly don't understand it. If I want to paint a 1:1 of The desperate Man (Gustave Courbet), or if I wanna make a thousand fanarts of Deadpool that's fully okay, but if I even think of doing that with a small artist, it's suddenly one of the worst treasons I could have ever commited on art and I get stripped of my title of artist??
That's the thing I hate the most of the art community too, you're expected to know from the beginning all these sets of "rules" and are never given an explanation to them
Like, I remember getting fucking torn to shreads on instagram once, when I was fucking 11-12 years old, because I found a drawing I liked on google, decided to redraw it in the exact style with different colors for the characters, like?? Sorry, I am a *child* who doesn't know shit about the internet and tried to do something I thought was nice and neat???
And the worst part is, deppending where your art lands? Some artists will tell you it's okay, there's no rules to art, do as you want!
And others will send you death threats for so much as existing bruh.
To me personally, I fall in the category of art has one rule; don't claim another person's work as your own. Don't just screenshot someone's art, post it and say you made it.
(Obv with the new age, don't use A.I., but that'll never be art so.. 💀)
For everything else, there are no rules. Trace, copy, make a 1:1, build upon pre-existing works, draw someone's OCs, share your own OCs, inspire yourself of different works and mediums, do as you wish, share what you want, art is not something to be gatekept, it's the most human thing there is. Music, drawing, painting, writing, feeling inspired, Creating. it all comes to us naturally as humans. We all love beauty and creating it. Let's not stop eachother from experiencing the beauty of creation. ♡
Also, never try to ruin someone else's work or tear them down, but that mostly applies to everything in life, not art specifically..
Lets build a beautiful community together and nurture eachother's talents with love and appreciation ♡
Feel free to reblog & add any tags to this! I tried to tag as many art forms / communities as I could think right now ♡

for clarification - the answer to the poll should have humans as a priority. you can always elaborate with other-species specifics in tags

I have three Star Trek women fully rendered full body pieces done (seven, Kira, and tos jadzia!) that I plan on making a series of (and possibly making prints if there’s the want for them) but they currently have no backgrounds, just a colored background. I really hate doing backgrounds but they feel so boring without it. I would love to do art nouveau style backgrounds but I know myself and that will take some time. I’m so eager to show these pieces but undecided if I should post them now or commit and wait to do bgs. so if I could get some feedback that would be very appreciated. Also here’s a sneaky peek so yall have an idea lolz

Inspiration
what's the difference to you between art that feels inspired by other art, and art that feels derivative of other art? not looking for a concrete answer, just people's insight
