I have a question regarding how you draw.

How do you draw boys' mouths without making mistakes? I try, but they always come out weird or I don't like the way they look.

Do you have a model or do you watch the series over and over again until you find the perfect mouth?

So mouths are very fun in the Rise style! I will say, studying as many screenshots as you can will massively help, Ive watched the show so much that I don’t really need to look up references for expressions, and if I go off model I don’t much mind. And sometimes I’ll draw and erase over and over until I get the exact look I want. It really is just practice, practice, practice!

But just a few quick tips that I personally try to stick to!

Most of the turtles have this little Z on the prominent side (whichever side they’re facing), then the middle of their upper lip has an curve or arch. This will typically (but not always!) be a consistent starting point, no matter what expression you’re doing. Next, adding little creases and dimples on the sides can help make various expressions stronger. For teeth, I tend to keep them very simple, unless they are clenched, then I’ll have some fun with making them sharp and adding a few small peaks of gum showing. Less detail is usually better when drawing sets of teeth, unless you are going for comedic realism—in that case more details can add a humorous note to an angry expression.

Don’t be afraid to make the mouth or eyes bigger or smaller than they should be. If they take up more space or get mushed closer together, it can really help push the feeling you want to convey. Truthfully, as long as it looks good as a whole, things can shift off your guidelines. Squash and stretch are a huge staple of cartooning, and you don’t need to adhere so strongly to following realistic feature placement, as long as it makes enough sense, looks good, and it gets your point across.

Hey artist if I commissioned an oc drawing for you and sent a google doc full of things like references, outfit explanations, posing ideas, personality (such as “they’re very bouncy/bubbly”) for said posing and (if it’s 2 characters) relations like “they’re twins” or is that too much? I don’t wanna overdo it and overwhelm y’all with all this information but I also just wanna try to make things as easy as possible by just….writing things out

Traditional: Himi gouache, Prismacolor pencils and just regular 0.7 mechanical pencils for sketching.

I have three Star Trek women fully rendered full body pieces done (seven, Kira, and tos jadzia!) that I plan on making a series of (and possibly making prints if there’s the want for them) but they currently have no backgrounds, just a colored background. I really hate doing backgrounds but they feel so boring without it. I would love to do art nouveau style backgrounds but I know myself and that will take some time. I’m so eager to show these pieces but undecided if I should post them now or commit and wait to do bgs. so if I could get some feedback that would be very appreciated. Do you guys get burned out RIGHT after a project (like one page or smthn) or do you guys last longer? It's me!

I wanted to improve my drawing of body proportions and I had the idea to use myself as a reference. This is the closest I have to posting a face reveal (technically just a body reveal, I had to be creative with the wolf head. I wish I was a wolf-man in real life).

I usually draw straight from my imagination while looking at references. This is the first time I actually traced my own body. So I have a question, I took a selfie and drew over it, is this a valid form of art or is it tracing? The photo is of me but it's still traced over, I've heard that tracing is alright to use if you're trying to learn art but what is the acceptable limit? I know tracing is a controversial subject in the art community and I want to know if what I'm doing is completely fine.

I plan on using this method to learn better body proportions and body perspective in the future so I really want to know if this is ok to do this.

what's the difference to you between art that feels inspired by other art, and art that feels derivative of other art? not looking for a concrete answer, just people's insight
