Just finished reading “The Lonely Smith Hypothesis” by 'Knownfor' on AO3 and I am left with a hole in my chest for Smith. Things could have been completely different had someone shown him some love and direction.

The passage that really hurt me was the one concerning the Oracle. She could have helped “heal” Smith but that wouldn’t be something she’s interested in as the combined power of both Neo and Smith’s would lead to the destruction of the Matrix itself. The plugged humans and machines would all go down, including her. Thus, making sense as to why she would manipulate their destiny where they would counteract each other. Smith would be the lone threat growing stronger day by day and Neo would be the only one capable of defeating him. “Star-crossed”.

'Knownfor' states, “In a way, the Oracle could have just tried to heal Smith and use her alliance with Smith and Neo as a leverage against the machines to make peace.” But she was scared that either one of them would get megalomanic and backstab the other. Ultimately, the divide and conquer method was her safest option for all.

I’m just going to add a piece of the writer’s text here so we can all cry together:
