Because almost all of the works in Art Heist, Baby! are chosen because I've seen them in person, or because I yearn to see them in person with a longing so intensely that it eats me up.

Okay, I think I'm going to have to go with Allegory of Charity by Francisco de Zurbarán (1655). (See is currently housed at the Prado museum in Madrid but she's not on display for the public to see).

I mean look at her, she's gorgeous!!

I think the flaming heart is pretty famous in its own right (often cropped without the complete image) and I am slut for catholic imagery (as a girl who went to catholic school for a bit and grew up catholic). So, let's discuss!! 😋

Zurbarán was a Spanish Baroque painter mainly known for his religious oil paintings (s/o to his still life with lemon, oranges and a rose though. that painting goes hard). He was a part of the Catholic counter-reformation in which a resurgence of catholic religious art, symbolism, imagery, and even institutions (such as seminaries and churches) that popped up in response to growing protestant support. Zurbarán was often commissioned to paint for monasteries and the king of Spain, is known to be "the Spanish Caravaggio" for his use of similar harsh lighting styles and painting techniques (chiaroscuro and tenebrism).

Zurbarán's works are often highly stylized and Allegory of Charity is no different. She is very posed and poised and looks out at the audience, directly (even the dramatic folds in her clothing aren't probable, but are done for visual effect, and not life-immitating accuracy). The central figure in the work is Charity personified, and she holds in her hand the flaming sacred heart of Jesus. The dove above, that is bursting into flames, represents the holy spirit.

Charity is seen clothed in red (the color of love and fittingly charity and green (the color of life and abundance).

Anyway, I think it's mentioned very briefly, in passing in AHB! but I made her viewable to the public (and to Regulus and James) because the Prado Museum in Madrid is gatekeeping her from the public!!!! I love this painting so much, so much. It's hard to describe, but she feels like an old friend. Like we'd be kindred spirits or something. And,,, I want to see her.

Cons: saying certain people's meer existence means evil from birth so should be locked up or killed.

X group cant fit y mental illness and so not helped.

Need a diagnosis for resources for help whoch can be costly and multiple therapist and trying best to word things so can get help need while struggleing.

Majority of people want to take away rights for you specifically because mentally ill.

Bullied, encouraged to hate yourself.

Told not good enough and a waste of a life.

Told that a burden.

Told that unlovable and nobody will like the real you.

Viewed as cant talk about your problems and especially if yoy are a kid, cant know about them so feel alone.

Media portrays you as either someone to pity, be feared, be ostracized, or locked up.

People claim mental, emotional, or sexual abuse is actually just your mental illness as reason. Conflating the 2.

Discrimination in workforce or housing.

Told you have no say in politics.

Have cops called on you.

Face more violence.

Etc.

Romaticization

Pros:

People go against the bigotry.

People give money to others.

People view you positively.

People willing to enter relationships with you

Easier to bring romanticization person to nuanced understanding then bigoted.

More likely to accept when need a break from a situation or in general.

Mixed: people might want to be like you and so explore themselves to figure self out better (i dunno, people say bad)

Cons: might have discouragement of meds/therapy (like for art)

Some might try to immitate harmful behaviors (how much does this really happen from romanticization. Percent wise)

So tell me. Why do people say it's just as bad if not worse then standard discrimination?

I have to thank Red from OSP and TV Tropes for totally changing the way I think about writing and originality.

They helped me to realise that I don't have to subvert every trope and do things that have never been done before to be a good writer. My writing doesn't have to have a million plot twists to be good. I should instead be focusing on the story I want to tell people.

Before I became addicted to TV Tropes, I used to worry all the time about whether or not someone else had already had my idea. I would make a mental list of all the common tropes I could think of, and then try to imagine ways to subvert them.

But once I had crossed the TV Tropes event horizon, where I could no longer escape it, I did a complete 180, and now whenever I come across a trope that applies to my writing I point excitedly and say "that's mee! I'm in this picture :D"

I now know that there's more to writing than surprising the audience. Storytelling isn't about showing everyone what a clever writer you are for avoiding that annoying cliche, it's about connecting with your audience, it's about building a work of art that reflects the human experience.

Tropes exist for a reason, and that reason is that art immitates life. We're all human. Sure, we're all different, no two people are exactly the same, but there will always be somebody out there who can relate to at least some of your experiences. And ultimately, that's what art and writing are all about — sharing your inner world and experiences with other people.

That's not to say I don't still take my time to critically analyse common tropes, and I have to say, I think Red's "Trope Talk" series helped me immensely with figuring this out. If you're worried about your writing being too cliched, it helps to understand why certain tropes are so persistent, and it also helps to think about ways you could look at tropes from a new angle rather than just flat-out defying them.

Even if something has been done many times before, that doesn't mean you can't give your own perspective on it, or give it your own twist.

I was walking around the forest near my shack, I was in a little spot that was slopped and next to the river, separeted by natural walls from two sides and by the river from one, for some reason, the river water was a light blue and salty.

I started looking at all rhe little branches and the mushrooms growing ln the sticks and wondered: "¿what even is there to so here?" So I decided to shrink/interpret the concepts and objects of the forest as more important. And I came across some mushroom people, father and son, they were talking and sitting down, this salt water river was a little haven beach for them, we talked about food, I showed them the magical power to grow greenery that I suddenly had, and also wanted to show them a little tupperware with icecream that I had in my shack, I pointed toward my cottage and even though it was at the other side of the river, they had never seen it before, something about only processing things that seem important to us and my tiny home being too big for them.

I used some kind of ice plataform to get across the river and back, bringing the topperware with me. They loved the ice cream, I made some jokes about accents, somehow perfectly immitated a british one even though in real life I cant even hide my spanish accent, then I used that spanish accent intentionally harder while I flicked a circuit board.

After some things that I dont actually remember, I asked the mushroom kid thag had become my friend what even was there to do here, I dont remember the answer, decided it was enough, grew back to normal size snd went back to my shack. But I cluldnt stop thinking about them, so I grabbed another icecream topperware and went out to look for them, I noiced they had left their little beach and were walking somewhere else, the salt water was starting to rise, I decided to follow them for a bit, I gues this is when the dream started gettin weaker because everything became simple line art, we walked, I startdd to imagine hiw it would be like to have my friends with me, running around with the mushroom people, even if there wasnt much to do, I still saw us running and laughing, and I was not in my current body. But my dreams are often very inconsistent and my pov always changes.

My eyes panned as what I was watching this whole time was a youtube video about a girl telling her story of mushroom people, I tried so hard to concentrate on the video and nothing else, probably because I was slipping away from the dream, and that was what happened, I slipped away from it.

I've actually observed this exact behaviour in my family! Some of my relatives exhibit zero accent, you could swear they were born and raised in the capital. But the moment they start talking to each other, they go HAM with it. I think it's so sweet!

Og Soap learnt to tone down his Scottish accent while away from home. It’s not something that he did consciously, it was more of a way to adapt to the people that he was interacting with.

One day Price catches Soap speaking to his family on the phone and holy shit, he could not pick up a single word. He was like a whole other person. Price had no idea that Soap’s voice could have these inflections.

As their relationship deepens, Price catches him slipping up sometimes. A “grand” here, a “wee” there… He watches these displays with a warm smile he didn’t realise he was capable of.

After more time spent together, rescuing each other from the claws of death time and time again, Soap wakes up a bit groggy and throws some Scottish phrases at Price. He doesn’t understand a word. But, what he does understand is that Soap feels at home with him. He is family. And the two could not love each other more.

wanting to include more aro and ace characters in my writing but also trying to figure out how to weave them as people who do things they love into a narrative. which isnt hard, exactly, im just trying to find places in my narrative i can carve them into properly. you cant shove any character just anywhere, regarless, or itll feel contrived. often because the narrative itself needs to expand to actually fit the characters that make it up- sometimes i think ace and aro characters just sort of get shoved into an idea after its been made and then theyre all cramped. it happens to any character type a writer isnt fully comfotable writing, i think, but thats often aroace's. its not that hard to fix, really, they just need a little breathing room.

but i also want them to be so cool, and im not a very cool person. what do cool characters DO? as a probably allo writer i usually solve this by making couples or siblings or smth. so the obvious answer is to do something similar. but this still brings me back to what 2+ people DO. and then i gotta be real honest and say i actually dont know what any body in this narrative is doing, which is great... art immitates life immitates art and all... but like. thats not a story.

so to find something for them to DO in relation to everyone else i gotta figure out what everyone else is doing. and ISNT THAT JUST the million dollar question?????

Message to fans of black horror 3

Hi, I really like this class and I love expressing my thoughts in these blog posts. The reason why I love expressing how I feel in these blog posts is because of how natural I am allowed to be. In most of my other classes I have to write sentences like so genetically like a robot and it doesn’t feel real or honest. One thing I was most interested in this week was “Wet Pain” in the Out There Screaming stories by Terence Taylor. I was initially so interested in this work specifically because of its title. One thing I learned in high school is that the title of your work can be just as important as any other aspect of your work. When you mentioned in the lecture how the title wet pain is supposed to be a nod at wet paint, that’s when it struck me that this was a deep title with meaning and immediately caught my interest. As I continued on, I learned that Wet Pain is a super interesting story about a supernatural painter whose art turns super creepy when the things he paints start coming to life. It was definitely an interesting idea that I immediately fell in love with. Also, it made me fall in love even more because it shows how good the title is for the story! It makes perfect sense! As the story goes on the tension builds as the protagonist realizes he’s somehow connected to these bizarre events, and he can’t control what his art is doing. The way Taylor describes everything made me feel like I was right there in the room, watching it happen. It’s definitely one of those stories that keeps you hooked because you just have to know what’s going to happen next! I love these kind of stories, they are more rare nowadays. I also found this story so interesting as I could relate the idea of it to real life. We often hear the quote, “Life Immitates Art,” which in this case it is very literal. It made me think about how so many examples in medieval art and even new art that real life actually imitates it. I personally express my art through the piano and singing. I wonder if at one point my lyrics have ever taken place in real life. That would be even more interesting if I wrote something that came to life afterwards like in Wet Pain.

The Firelord once said that the only way to the world to be peaceful was conquering the entire world for the Fire Nation. So he and his army proceeded to commit genocide. The slaughtered every airbender and every Air Nomad. All the Nomads were killed. Except one: the Avatar, who was away and lost in the ocean while the genocide hapenned. After 100 years, after being awaken, he fought the Fire Nation and its army, giving hope back to the world: hope of balance, hope to end that neverending oppression.

Unlike the Avatar's world, we don't have an Avatar destined to balance the world to aid us. And various nations were eliminated on the past, just like the Air Nomads.

The biggest genocide here, in real life, was the indigenous genocide. Millions of persons murdered by european colonizers and erased from history, just like the Fire Nation did to the Air Nomads. Those cultures are forgotten in time and there is no survivor to revive those cultures like the Avatar revived his people's culture. And this genocide stills happenning nowadays, sadly.

The most known genocide was the Holocaust. Although most people I've met only remember about the jews persecuted and murdered, the Holocaust didn't only target jews. They targeted also the roma people and the disabled ones. They were not "perfect" to the nazis. The roma, like the jews, were persecuted through history because of their beliefs and their culture. Seems like what the Fire Nation did with the waterbenders from the South Water Tribe. Arrest and murder, because they are the escapegoats. The disabled ones, well... Nazis were ableists. They saw the disabled people as defectuous. They were an error to them. Non-white persons were also hunted, because they were seen as inferior beings, not even were considered human. What about LGBTS? They were seen as deffects. And the people with different political opinions, who dared to keep believing in what is correct and stood against Nazism in Germany? Arrested, because "how dared they question the Nazi supremacy?" Luckly, thanks to the commies, the nazis were defeated. Ok US, UK and the other allies did something to aid during the 2nd World War, but we need to remember: they rathered ignore the nazis until it was too late. Also, some nazis were rescued by US on Operation Paperclip and were kept alive, working for a new country, but keeping the same ideas.

I once heard that history tends to repeat itself. I also heard that art immitates the real life. And that real life also immitates art.

For my sadness, history is repeating itself. There is a new Fire Nation in the world. Unlike Germany or the Europe, that nation is not a big potency. That nation is technically the pet from one potency. And, using religion and the threaten of terrorism as excuses, they're committing genocide. Innocents are losing their homes, their families, their lives. Universities and Hospitals were destroyed. The culture of an entire nation is being erased. And children... Well... They're considered as potential terrorists. Not human beings. Not pure and harmless. Potential terrorists. And those Air Nomads of our time, pacifists and defensive, are being erased. And we're watching this in real time on internet. Fire Soldiers making TikToks mocking the Nomads. The Firelord breaking balance to expand the Fire Nation. Fire Nation inhabitants who dare to keep beliving on what is correct and standing against those war crimes are being repressed by the nation they believed once to be a refuge for them, but in reality, this Fire Nation is as colonizer as Europe was with the rest of the world; and it is also as genocidal as the Nazi Germany was. And what I see? Although some countries like South Africa, Ireland and Brazil have positioned themselves against the genocide, I have the perception most of the world is acting like US and UK did in the 1930's: ignoring that until it becomes too late to react.

The time is ending.
