Someone PLEASE put the "art" back in ar(t)chitecture. All the buildings I ever see are so bland, faceless, copy-and-paste. This is capitalism at work, isn't it? pursuing the quickest, cheapest option? with no consideration of the immeasurable non-monetary value of passion to create true beauty? Whatever is causing it, make it stop. 😭

Pittsfield Building, Chicago

Chicago, Illinois is known for giving birth to the modern skyscraper and an exceptional skyline on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Many of the city’s most iconic landmarks are found in the area downtown known as the Loop, but in the heart of a sprawling, world-class metropolis, it’s easy to overlook a few gems.  Despite a relative lack of attention, the Pittsfield Building at 55 E. Washington Street, just steps from Millennium Park, is a treasure in its own right. Indeed, it was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2002. Though it may sound unimpressive by today’s standards, the 38-story skyscraper was the tallest in Chicago at the time of its completion in 1927. It’s not as tall as the Sears Tower, as striking as the Chicago Board of Trade Building, as outwardly pretty as the Tribune Tower, nor does it litter Instagram the way the “Bean” does. But its merits exceed simply the appeal of an underdog.

The Pittsfield, a professional building with both retail shops and offices, features some beautiful architectural choices, including Art Deco geometry and Spanish Gothic Revival detailing. A five-story atrium with marble walls, balconies, and a large chandelier greet visitors upon entry. The Pittsfield Café on the ground floor is likely going to be the hook that grabs passersby from the street, but the space is also available to rent for weddings and other upscale galas.

I happened to step into this building because I was hungry and seeking a deli or cafe for a quick bite during a walk on a hot day. I ended up gaping at the ceiling, taking these pictures, and spent several hours later creating art utilizing the shapes from the lobby. Which is, of course, now for sale on a number of products in my redbubble shop.

Nor am I encouraging you to visit this particular place, necessarily. The point is that I stumbled into this inspirational structure accidentally, which is a heartwarming phenomenon that can happen to anyone. This is just a reminder that beauty -- whether it’s a flower growing in a crack in the sidewalk or a veritable historic landmark -- is everywhere.
