Superstitions may sound outdated and silly for some, but there are people who still steadfastly believe in them, and if you have Filipino friends, relatives, or co-workers, you may encounter them often enough. 

Below are some common Philippine superstitions that you may want to take note of for future reference.

1. A pregnant woman is believed to be very lucky, especially when it comes to gambling or playing games of chance. For some gamblers, simply having a pregnant woman beside them would be enough to give them a winning streak. 2. Anything suddenly falling without apparent reason, especially a glass breaking into pieces, is an omen that indicates or foretell serious trouble. In the worst case scenario, it could mean the death of a loved one. 3. According to old lore, girls who sing while cooking would end up marrying a man significantly older than they are.

4. Sweeping the floor at night allegedly causes bad luck. If you really must sweep the floor, make sure that the dirt won’t leave the house until morning as it supposedly drives good luck out of the house. This would be an even bigger no-no when someone from the family has just died as it will supposedly “wipe” the entire family away — meaning the remaining family members will die one by one.

5. Eating from a stack of plates or sitting on a stack of chairs will supposedly cause you to end up with multiple partners. This could either be because you’re going to be widowed or you will end up parting ways with your partner/s. What is the Difference Between Ng and Nang

“Ng” and “Nang” are pronounced the same way, but did you know that they have different uses?

Ng

“Ng” is a Tagalog article that is equivalent to the English article “a.” Aside from being an article, it also functions as a preposition that indicates possession similar to the English word “of.”

Examples:

1. Kumuha ako ng silya. (I took a chair)

kumuha = took / got

ako = I

ng = a

silya = chair

Nang

In contrast to “ng,” “nang” is used to turn adjectives into adverbs by indicating in what manner or up to how much degree something was done.

Examples:

1. Sinipa niya nang malakas ang pinto (He/She kicked the door forcefully).

sinipa = kicked

niya = he/she

malakas = strong/forceful

How to Start a Chat in Tagalog Using Tagalog Pleasantries

If you’re trying to learn Tagalog, you probably already know “Kumusta” which is the rough counterpart of the English greeting “Hi” or “Hello,” but do you know what goes after that?  Learn some basic Tagalog pleasantries to keep a short conversation going the next time you wanted to chat with your Filipino friends, relatives, neighbors, or co-workers.

Kumusta ka? = How are you? (As discussed in the previous lesson, aside from asking the state of someone’s well-being, it can also be used to say “Hi” or “Hello.”)

Polite Form: Kumusta po kayo?

Mabuti naman ako. = “I am fine” / “I’m doing good.” (“Mabuti naman” can also mean “That’s good to hear”)

Polite Form: Mabuti naman po ako.

Ikaw? = How about you? (Usually said right after “Mabuti naman ako”)

Polite Form: Kayo po?

Ang tagal nating hindi nagkita. = We haven’t seen each other for so long. / It’s been a while.

Polite Form: Ang tagal po nating hindi nagkita.

Natutuwa akong makita ka ulit. = I’m glad to see you again / It’s nice to see you again.

Polite Form: Natutuwa po akong makita kayo ulit

Ako din! = Me too! / Same here!

Polite Form: Ako din po.

Gumaganda/Gumaguwapo ka yata. = You seem to be getting lovelier/more handsome. (You can also add an extra “ngayon” right after “yata” to say “You seem to be getting lovelier/more handsome now/lately).

Polite Form: Gumaganda/gumaguwapo po yata kayo.

Na-miss kita. = I missed you. (There is no exact Tagalog counterpart for this English sentence, so we use Taglish (a combination of Tagalog and English words) instead. Variants of this include: Miss na kita which means “I already miss you,” Nami-miss kita which means “I am missing you” or “I have been missing you” and Mami-miss kita which means “I will miss you.”

Polite Forms: Na-miss ko po kayo / Miss ko na po kayo / Nami-miss ko po kayo / Mami-miss ko po kayo

Mag-ingat ka! / Ingat ka! = Take care!

Polite Form: Mag-ingat po kayo or Ingat po kayo.

Paalam! = Goodbye! People rarely use this, though — usually opting for a simple “bye” or “babay” (bye-bye) instead.

Polite Form: Paalam po.

Ikumusta mo na lang ako sa kanila. = Just give my regards to them.

Polite Form: Ikumusta ninyo na lang po ako sa kanila.

Paki-kumusta mo na lang ako sa kanila/Paki-kumusta mo na lang sila para sa akin. = Please say hi to them for me.

Polite Form: Paki-kumusta ninyo na lang po ako sa kanila/ Paki-kumusta ninyo na lang po sila para sa akin.

Hanggang sa muli! = Until next time! (Usually used to imply that you will meet again in the future.)

Polite Form: Hanggang sa muli po!

Dealing with idioms can be challenging because there’s more to them than just their literal meanings; however, that’s also what makes learning them more fun. 

Today, let’s learn about some basic Tagalog idioms, their literal English translations, their actual meanings, and the corresponding English idioms (if applicable).

Tagalog Idiom: Pagputi ng uwak / Pag-itim ng Tagak  

Literal Translation: When the crow has turned white / when the stork has become black

English Counterpart: When hell freezes over. / When pigs fly.

Meaning: Something that will never happen

Tagalog Idiom: Makati ang kamay 

Literal Translation: Hand is itchy

Meaning: Someone who is always itching to steal something

Tagalog Idiom: Makati ang paa

Literal Translation: Foot is itchy

English Counterpart: Someone afflicted with wanderlust

Meaning: Someone who’s always itching to go somewhere else.

Literal Translation: Tongue is sweet

English Counterpart: Sweet-talker

Meaning: Someone who’ll tell you compliments that they don’t mean just to get you to do what they want you to.

Tagalog Idiom: Matalas ang dila

Literal Translation: Sharp-tongued

English Counterpart: Sharp-tongued

Meaning: Someone whose words can seriously hurt.

Tagalog Idiom: Manigas ka! 

Literal Translation: Stiffen up

English Counterpart: Go die! / Drop dead! / Like hell, I will!

Meaning: There’s no way I’m going to do that!

Tagalog Idiom: Itaga mo sa bato 

Literal Translation: Hack it against a rock).

English Counterpart: Mark my word. / Carved in stone

Meaning: Remember my words because I will make sure that they will become a reality

Tagalog Idiom: Sipsip

Literal Translation: Suck

English Counterpart: Suck-up

Meaning: A person who tries to gain the favor of someone in authority by saying or doing everything that might please them

Tagalog Idiom: Parang naghahanap ng karayom sa gitna ng dayami 

Literal Translation: Like looking for a needle in the middle of a haystack

English Counterpart: Like looking for a needle in a haystack 

Meaning: Doing something that requires too much effort without any guarantee of success

Tagalog Idiom: Mahirap pa sa daga 

Literal Translation: Poorer than a mouse

English Counterpart: As poor as a church mouse

Extremely poor. Probably because mice only rely on scraps, so if you’re poorer than a mouse, you are very poor indeed.

Tagalog Idiom: Nagsusunog ng kilay 

Literal Translation: Burning eyebrows

English Counterpart: Burning the midnight oil

Meaning: Working very hard

Tagalog Idiom: Mani / Sisiw

Literal Translation: Peanut / Chick

English Counterpart: Piece of cake

Meaning: Something that can be easily accomplished (I’m not sure about the origin of this one, though)

Tagalog Idiom: Maghahalo ang balat sa tinalupan 

Literal Translation: The peel will get mixed with the thing that was already peeled

English Counterpart: All hell will break loose.

Meaning: Chaos will ensue if a particular thing was done.

Tagalog Idiom: Dadaan sa butas ng karayom 

Literal Translation: Will pass through the eye of the needle

English Counterpart: Go through fire and water

Meaning: You will face impossible odds before you accomplish something

Tagalog Idiom: Harangan man ng sibat 

Literal Translation: Even when blocked with a spear

English Counterpart: Come hell or high water

Meaning: You will do something no matter what it takes

Tagalog Idiom: Balat-sibuyas 

Literal Translation: Onion-skinned

Meaning: Someone who’s easily offended

Filipino Sayings

Every country has its own sayings that its people follow as a guide. While some of them may have gone old, a lot of them still applies to our lives regardless of the number of decades or centuries that have passed. Below are some examples of Filipino sayings that most of us have grown up hearing and following.

Tagalog Saying: Kapag maikli ang kumot, magtiis kang mamaluktot.

English Translation: If the blanket is short, learn how to crouch.

Meaning: If you are going through difficult times, learn to adapt in order to survive.

Tagalog Saying: Kapag may isinuksok, may madudukot.

English Translation:  If you tucked something away, you'll have something to retrieve later.

Meaning: If you saved up for the future, you'll have something to use in case of an emergency.

Tagalog Saying: Aanhin ang palasyo kung ang nakatira ay kuwago? Mabuti pa ang kubo na ang nakatira ay tao.

English Translation: What good would a palace be if it's occupied by an owl? A nipa hut would be better as long as it's inhabited by a human.

Meaning: Material wealth means nothing if you don't know how to treat other people well.

Tagalog Saying: Ang naglalakad nang matulin, pag natinik ay malalim.

English Translation: The faster people walk, the deeper thorns would bore through their skin should they step on one.

Meaning: People who make impulsive decisions are bound to encounter serious problems.

Tagalog Saying: Ang taong hindi marunong lumingon sa kanyang pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa kanyang paroroonan. 

English Translation: He who does not know how to retrace his origins would not reach his destination.

Meaning: Someone who forgot his humble beginnings are bound to lose sight of the more important things in life.

Tagalog Saying: Kung anong puno, siyang bunga. / Ang mangga ay hindi namumunga ng santol.

English Translation: Whatever the tree is, so is the fruit. / Mango trees do not bear santol fruits.

Meaning: You take after your parents or the people who raised you up.

Tagalog Saying: Ang taong nagigipit, sa patalim kumakapit.

English Translation: People in dire situations will cling on to knives.

Meaning: People in desperate situations will do anything to survive.

Tagalog Saying: Ang maniwala sa sabi-sabi, walang bait sa sarili.

English Translation: He who believes in rumors does not have a mind of his own.

Meaning: Don't believe everything you hear.

Tagalog Saying: May pakpak ang balita, may tainga ang lupa.

English Translation: News has wings, the earth has ears.

Meaning: News / rumors spread fast.

Tagalog Saying: Aanhin pa ang damo kung patay na ang kabayo?

English Translation: What good would the grass be if the horse is already dead?

Meaning: Acts of kindness are useless if the opportunity to do something for someone has already passed.

Tagalog Saying: Sa taong may hiya, ang salita'y panunumpa.

English Translation: For a person who has a sense of shame, every word is an oath.

Meaning: A man of honor always keeps his promises.

Tagalog Saying: Lahat ng gubat ay may ahas.

English Translation: All jungles have snakes.

Meaning: There will always be traitors / bad people wherever you go.

Tagalog Saying: Ang taong walang kibo, nasa loob ang kulo.

English Translation: He who does not speak has something boiling up inside.

Meaning: People who do not talk much are often hiding something inside.

Tagalog Saying: Ang palay ay parisan, habang nagkakalaman ay lalong nagpupugay.

English Translation: Imitate the rice, the fatter its grains become, the more it bows down.

Tagalog Pick-up Lines

You know that awkward moment when you want to engage someone in a conversation but you just can't find a good opening? Well, have you tried using pick-up lines? These lines may be rather cheesy, but some of them can be actually amusing given the proper delivery and timing, so why don't you go for broke and see if it's going to work?

Bangin ka ba? (Are you a cliff?)

Kasi nahuhulog na ako sa iyo. (Because I'm falling for you)

Gaano ka kataas? (How tall are you?)

Di ko kasi maisip kung paano ka nagkasya sa puso ko (I can't imagine how you managed to fit in my heart.)

Kung basketball player ako at ikaw ang bola, palagay ko hindi kita mai-i-shoot. (If I were a basketball player and you were the ball, I don't think I would be able to shoot you)

Palagi kasi kitang mami-miss. (Because I'll keep on missing you.)

Expressing How You Feel in Tagalog

Expressing how you feel can be difficult, especially if you literally don't know what to say. Today, we're going to fix that a bit by discussing how to express your thoughts in Tagalog. Here are some examples:

Masaya ako - I am happy.

e.g. Masaya ako dahil nagkabati na kami. (I am happy because we have made up)

Natutuwa ako - I am glad

e.g. Natutuwa akong makita ka ulit. (I am glad to see you again)

Nalulungkot ako - I am sad.

e.g. Nalulungkot ako dahil aalis ka na. (I feel sad because you will already leave)

Nagsasawa na ako - I am getting sick of this.

e.g. Nagsasawa na ako sa mga dahilan mo. (I am getting sick of your excuses)

Suko na ako - I give up.

Nahihiya ako - I feel shy/ I am embarrassed.

e.g. Nahihiya ako dahil sa mga nasabi ko. (I feel embarrassed because of the things I have said)

Nalilito ako / Naguguluhan ako - I am confused.

e.g. Nalilito ako, pwede bang paki-ulit? (I am confused, can you please repeat that?)

Umaasa ako - I am hoping that...

e.g. Umaasa ako na maaayos din ang lahat. (I am hoping that everything will turn out fine)

Nahihirapan ako - I am having trouble.... / I am having a hard time....

e.g. Nahihirapan akong sabihin ang nararamdaman ko (I am having a hard time saying how I feel.)

Nasasaktan ako - I feel hurt.

e.g. Nasasaktan ako kapag nakikita kitang ganyan. (I feel hurt when I see you like that.)

Naiinis ako. - I feel annoyed.

e.g. Naiinis ako tuwing ginagawa mo iyan. (I feel annoyed everytime you do that.)

Those are some examples of how you can express your feelings in Tagalog. Tagalog Pleasantries

Now that you can greet your Filipino friends, relatives, or acquaintances with some basic phrases or sentences, let's move on to trying to start a simple conversation with them. These pleasantries can help:

Kumusta ka means "How are you." As discussed in the previous post, it can also be used to say "Hi" or "Hello."

Polite Form: Kumusta po kayo?

Mabuti naman ako means "I am fine" or "I'm doing good." Alternatively, "Mabuti naman" can also mean "That's good to hear"

Polite Form: Mabuti naman po ako.

Ikaw? means "How about you" and usually used right after "Mabuti naman ako"

Polite Form: Kayo po?

Ang tagal nating hindi nagkita means "We haven't seen each other in a while" or just simply, "It's been a while."

Polite Form: Ang tagal po nating hindi nagkita.

Natutuwa akong makita ka ulit means "I'm glad to see you again" or "It's nice to see you again.

Polite Form: Natutuwa po akong makita kayo ulit

Ako din means "Me too" or "Same here."

Polite Form: Ako din po.

Gumaganda/Gumaguwapo ka yata means "You seem to be getting lovelier/more handsome. You can also add an extra "ngayon" right after yata (gumaganda/gumagwapo ka yata ngayon) to say "You seem to be getting lovelier/more handsome now/lately).

Polite Form: Gumaganda/gumagwapo po yata kayo.

Na-miss kita means "I missed you." There is no exact Tagalog counterpart for this English sentence, so we use Taglish (combination of Tagalog and English words) instead. Variants of this include: Miss na kita which means "I already miss you," Nami-miss kita which means "I am missing you" or "I have been missing you" and Mami-miss kita which means "I will miss you."

Polite Forms: Na-miss ko po kayo, Miss ko na po kayo, Nami-miss ko po kayo, Mami-miss ko po kayo.

Common Greetings in Tagalog

Greetings are often the easiest and most useful things to learn while trying to pick up a new language. You may have few words in your arsenal, but if you know some basic greetings, you can at least say a casual "hi" and establish some rapport with the people around you while you're still building your vocabulary.

Here are some common greetings that may come in handy when talking to a Filipino or Tagalog speaker:

Kumusta came from the Spanish greeting Come Estas which literally means "How are you," but it is also used to say "Hello."

Magandang Umaga means "Good morning."

Magandang Tanghali means "Good afternoon." Tanghali literally means noon, so it is usually used around 12:00 noon or the hour immediately preceding or following it.

Magandang Hapon also means "Good afternoon." It is a lot more flexible compared to Magandang Tanghali as it can be used anytime between 12:00 noon to around the time the sun sets.

Magandang Gabi means "Good evening." Aside from that, it can also be used to bid someone good night.

Magandang Araw means "Good Day." This is often used during daytime, but it can also be used as a greeting signaling the conclusion of a long day.

Maligayang Kaarawan means "Happy birthday." Filipinos just usually use "Happy birthday" when greeting friends and acquaintances, but if you want to go out of your way and greet them in their own language, you can use this one instead.

Maligayang Pasko means "Merry Christmas." Alternatively, you can also use "Masayang Pasko" which means the same thing (Happy Christmas), although the first one is more commonly used.

Maligayang Bagong Taon means "Happy New Year," but when greeting people during Christmas, we usually say, "Maligayang Pasko at manigong bagong taon" which literally means,"Happy Christmas and a prosperous new year (manigo means prosperous).

Kumusta!

My name is Marie and I run Philippine Halohalo. The name was taken from the name of a Popular Filipino refreshment made from a combination of different fruits mixed together with shaved ice, sugar, and milk. Just like this favorite Filipino dessert, my blog contains a mixture of Tagalog lessons and bits and pieces of Filipino culture.
